These get darker and darker before the light. And the light at the end ain't that bright, unfortunately. But the next movie is legit great...in an awful way (because of the general premise). By the end of the series you've definitely taken a trip. Might even make a person want to vote. (Almost).
Just to explain why the Mockingjay is important is because in the books, during the rebellion, the Capitol created a breed of birds called the Jabberjay. These birds would spy on the rebels and repeat every word to the Capitol. Once the rebels noticed this, they started to feed the Jabberjays false information and the Capitol had their plans screwed. As a result of this they let all the Jabberjays go and they mate with Mockingbirds and they create a new breed: Mockingjay. So Mockingjays are a symbol that people can outsmart the Capitol and make them look like fools. A parallel of this story.
Seen all the movies, and own the books, but never read them. Seeing all the extra information that people have commented from the book just solidified my choice to read the first book at work tonight lol.
The thing about Rue’s death isn’t so much that a little kid died and the district got angry because they killed a kid, they’ve been watching kids her age die for decades. What sparked the change is Katniss’ care for Rue, and her respect and determination to honor Rue, showing the districts that they are connected and not isolated and disparate from each other. Rue’s death and Katniss’ response, especially that finger salute, ignited in people the realization that they are connected and that their lives do matter and they can do something about it. As Snow said, too much hope is dangerous, and Katniss showing the districts defiance and love and humanity can exist is too much hope that can light fires to change and rebellion.
And it just happens that Rue came from the district already most prone to rebel As well as being probably the most oppressed district of all bcs it's the most important, being responsible for Agriculture. The capital can't afford ppl slipping out through a fence like Katniss who lives in a much less important district where her slipping through doesn't really affect her district's bottom line
I love that district 11 regifted the bread meant for Rue to Katniss to show their appreciation to her. This being the 1st time that a district had sent a present to somebody not from their own district (even though it was incredibly expensive for people who have no money). This was further a show of defiance against the Capital.
@Walker Dey it unfortunately was cut out of the film. District 11 pulled all their money together to send rue a present of bread from the District but after she died they instructed for it to be given to Katniss instead to show appreciation. Katniss knew where the bread came from since Peta had previously, at dinner in the training center, gone through the bread basket showing her the difference between the different breads. I understand why it was cut from the film but I think it was such a sweet moment and aswell as being one of the 1st signs of rebellion
Compassion is the enemy to oppression. Those in power don’t want us to care about each other, instead they want to fuel hate, selfishness, and apathy. It’s why I think The Hunger Games is my favorite dystopian story. It’s very much applicable to the world today.
The score of 11 was meant to be punishment for shooting the arrow at the Apple. Giving her the highest score made her a target for the career tributes from Districts 1, 2 & 4.
No, In Catching Fire they gave both Peeta and Katniss 12’s (the highest score). They gave Katniss an eleven because he was actually impressed. He tells Snow when he asked “Why do we have a winner?”
Just a book detail to explain Katniss missing her first shot in the evaluation: she was used to making her own bows and arrows, which had natural variations, so she was uncertain how to aim such a perfectly straight arrow. She missed, because she was used to working with imperfection; once she made some minor adjustments to her technique, she was able to shoot well enough again to hit the apple.
yeah always loved that part in the book. As someone who does archery I can say changing just a little thing about your bow and arrow varies the results you get.
She missed because Haymitch had told her not to do ANY archery until her final viewing with the game makers. So she hadn’t had any practice with any of the bows until then.

@@MARYWTHER i don't know if you will be interested in this, but there's a popular fanfic called Peeta's Game that does exactly that. There's the 3 books in Peeta's POV, it follows closely the canon, with every same conversations. I'm currently on the third one, really interesting because you get Peeta's view on the all highjacking thing. It's the first fanfic i read in years and it's really well written and actually pretty close to Collins's style. It definitely feels like a real book.
they don't specifically say it in the movies, but Katniss has a very strong feeling of having to repay people even for small favors. that's why it's especially hard for her to go up against Peeta since the bread he gave her saved Katniss and her family from starvation. this was a few months after Kats dad died in the mines and she was suddenly the main provider since her mom was depressed and in shock. Peetas family owns a bakery and he burnt the bread on purpose so he could give it to Katniss, even though he knew his mom would beat him for it. i've also seen a lot of people criticize Jennifer Lawrence for playing Katniss "too emotionless" but that's literally how Katniss is in the books. she has ptsd already, she's scared to get close to people and obviously has huge trust issues (can't blame her) so she just kind of blocks out her emotions so they won't get in the way of surviving.
People criticized J-Law to be "too chubby" to play a starving girl. It's nuts how much people like to criticize instead of enjoying the dang things. Thank you for writing the comment about story with the bread. I was about to but you were faster :D
Oh I thought that he burnt it by accident! And that Katniss happened to be there. My mom, who read the books, told me he got a serious beating for it, which makes sense when you see a small roll of bread is worth a squirrel ad he burnt at least a few loafs/baguettes.
@Toukie, I remember watching the movie when it first came out and thinking Rue looked much healthier than I imagined her to be when I read the book. If the actors had been chosen based on the looks of the characters it would have been too hard to watch.
I haven't read the book, but from what I've been told, when a tribute dies, they're picked up relatively quickly by a special team, and other tributes are asked to vacate the area before they pick up the body. The fact that Katniss stayed behind with Rue and took the time to pick flowers and arrange Rue with the flowers was kind of an extra f-you to the capitol, and probably one of the reasons District 12 was so grateful to her, since she treated Rue like a human being even in death on top of taking care of her and protecting her.
Spot on! This also isn't really emphasized in the movie but in the books, Katniss was really struggling to get the bow and arrow off Glimmer's dead body and was trying to do it quickly since she knew the hovercraft that takes the bodies would be arriving very soon and she refused to let that weapon get away from her again. It's really graphic as the bow and arrow were pretty much stuck to Glimmer's body and Katniss kind of had to rip her top half apart just to get the bow and arrow off her. The stings from the tracker jackers were also more disgusting in the book, popping and oozing out green pus as well
The way i read the books, the cannons fire when the heart stops. Rue's wound would have caused a slower death. Rue lost consciousness while katniss sang but wasn't yet dead. That gave Katniss time to gather and arrange the flowers. At least, that's how I interpreted it.
So I just reread the book and we get the impression that Katniss is aware that her putting the flowers around Rue wouldn’t be televised b/c it is basically going against the capital but they always showed when the jets took the body away so they would have to show the flowers right before they take her.
@@drmoppssister2599 As far as I remember there's a cut scene where the picture blurrs gradually to emphasize Rue's consciousness fading into Death, and I kinda think that hit even harder than the original scene. By book Rue dies while Katniss is singing, but as Katniss is around the body, it isn't picked up by the hovercraft right away. (Admittedly a bit of a plothole of sorts.)
Haymitch sees so much of himself in Katniss. None of his backstory was in the movies, but it lends so much to his character. He also won his games by outsmarting the Capitol and using their own rules against them, he figured out the forcefield around the arena bounced things back at the same force it was hit so when the last tribute hurled her axe at him he ducked and it bounced straight back into her head. Snow was furious and Haymitch's whole family was killed as punishment to him gaming the system.
@@Noname_game672 actually it was a D1 tribute that Haymitch killed to win. He did comfort the last tribute from his district as she was dying tho, just like Katniss did for Rue.
Yes! Did Haymitch kill anyone in his games? I know there were twice as many kids, but I don’t think he did right? Isn’t that partially why Snow punished him so harshly outside
I read the books as a kid. Peeta is nice in the films but just lovely in the books. The thing why him and Katniss are such a good duo is that Peeta is a very good and natural speaker while katniss cant do that at all.

The books, especially Catching Fire, portray Peeta as a "gentle giant", a tall and very strong young man who is calm, kind, intelligent, eloquent, charming, empathic, considerate, altruistic and artistic. In the Catching Fire book, Katniss thinks that Peeta should be the leader of the revolution because he can sway anyone with words, while Katniss sees herself most useful being dead: as a martyr.
Peeta in the books is amazing I read the trilogy at 10-11 years old - ngl sometimes I get sad out of nowehere about the characters cuz I now understand a new layer of horror to it as an adult and the implications of some of the things that happened to the characters in mockingjay better. Briliantly written trilogy
The dog mutations at the end were a hella lot more terrifying in the books. They had been genetically altered to look like all the dead tributes, right down to having weirdly human eyes. Clove's (knife girl) death was also a lot more brutal. Thresh smashes her head in with a rock and she dies slowly.
@@themagnus2919 I think that was a misconception because Katniss and Peeta recognize a few tributes when looking at them . If I remember correctly, in Catching Fire they say the mutts were made to look like they were the tributes
19:02 This is actually what I like about Ceaser. Katniss describes him as well-meaning in the books. He always does his best to make each tribute shine or at least look favourable. He's basically really good at making others look good. And you can tell he is helping Katniss in her interview. He helps her calm down and has a more normal conversation with her. He knows which topics to bring up to get Katniss to show her 'inner' self (with the caring for her family part), even if it's a performance. I really like that about him. It's also super dangerous and shows how media can control the masses. Still, I can't help but enjoy his moments.
Gifts from sponsors takes and enormous amount of money. The burn cream was from sponsors Haymitch just sent it to her with a message. After Rue dies and Katniss pays tribute to her she gets a package of rolls I think from District 11. Katniss is very touched because she knows how little that districts people have (like her own poor district) and yet they still pulled their what they could together to send her a grateful gift. It is not common for districts to send gifts to other districts.
@@sianne79 maybe but I guess they wanted to highlight the unrest in the districts rather than kindness between districts. They didn’t show district 4 giving bread in Catching Fire either🤷🏻♀️ would have been nice but I guess time and relevance to push the story along overruled sentimentality.
@@FestivalFacePaintArtist district 4 didn’t give it out of kindness in Catching Fire. It was part of the code to let the rebel tributes know when to act. I wish they’d have left both bread things in, but I get leaving it out for Catching Fire, else it would have let non book readers know that SOMETHING was going on.
I'll never forget watching the ending (you know which scene i'm talking about) for the first time in the cinemas, that was such a cathartic experience i still get chills by it
I totally agree, there were lots of things I didnt love about the hunger games the movie as I was a huge fan of the book but catching fire for me was just everything!
In the books Katniss was fond of Peeta and didn’t want to kill him after playing the games together. She was set on actually taking the berries with Peeta and she wasn’t trying to outplay the Capitol on purpose. They actually had them in their mouth and about to swallow them when they announced both of them as winners. They rinsed their mouth out with water.
she says she was doing it bc she knew they needed a winner so she thought that way they would let them both live, but she never intended it as a rebel act that's true, she didn't notice how big what she did was and wasn't thinking of any plan for later on, just them surviving at that moment yes. When they get to 3 and put them on their mouths she thinks, scared, "maybe I was wrong" bc she thought they would let them survive but in that moment it looked for her like they were going to let them die and she already had to go along with it bc she already proposed it, she didn't want to tho.
That opening bloodbath where all the sound drops out is the moment that I knew these movies were gonna be something special. That whole scene is just so scary, surreal, and unnerving - they don't sugarcoat it or make it like some teen-movie "action sequence". It's just blood, running, and blind panic - exactly as it should be.
The crazy thing is, even though there's obviously no sound to drop in the books it's even more intense. The movies are good but I'll always be thankful for the books. A true masterclass.
A detail left out from the movies, Panem was built on top of what was left of North America. The Capitol was located in the west of North America whereas district 12 was in/near the Appalachian Mountains. In regards to the districts 1,2 and 4 are considered the "career districts" because they provide the most goods to the Capitol. In the books it's explained that "training" for the games is strictly prohibited. However because of the special treatment for 1 2 and 4 the Capitol and the peacemakers turn a blind eye to it which is why almost every year a Career tribute wins the games.

@@emilylewis5373 they aren't. Peacekeepers are from the Capitol. District 2 is a training facility for capitol peacekeepers and they produce weapons. But no one from district 2 itself become peacekeepers. Unless you are a Victor or on very small list of high position you aren't even allowed to leave your district, nvvm to go to the capitol at all.
Actually, older brothers/sisters wouldn't normally volunteer in district 12 because they needed to provide for other siblings. In many cases, the older sibling volunteering to save one of the youngest ones getting picked would mean the entire family going under(like in Gale's case if that would have happened) Katniss had an arrangement with Gale that if one of the two ever got picked, the other would keep the other family afloat because they both knew how to hunt.
I’m not sure if anyone mentioned this, but after Rue’s death, Rue’s district sent Katniss a piece of bread which was a turning point because it was the first time a district sent someone not within their own a sponsor showing that Katniss was already connecting with districts on a deeper level that they’re all on the same team
The reason why Rue’s dad’s reaction to her death was so pivotal, was that most treated death so casually in that world. Her dad needed to see katniss react so respectfully and viscerally to Rue’s death to motivate him to make the life threatening decision to assault peace keepers. An organization very willing to kill anyone for insurrection
The author, Suzanne Colllins, got inspiration to write this when she was flipping through channels on tv and saw war coverage on one channel and reality shows like American Idol on the next. It was very jarring for her, so she formed the idea in her head, while also being heavily inspired by Roman gladiators. This is why Panem (which is the ruins of North America, after its succombed to climate/natural disasters, and a war over the remaining resources) uses the Hunger Games as a fear tactic. Katniss describes The Hunger Games as the Capitol saying, "Look how we take your children and sacrifice them and there's nothing you can do. If you lift a finger, we will destroy every last one of you." Then they make all the districts treat it as a festivity, they pit the districts against each other, and the tributes are paraded around on national tv that is required by law to have every citizen watch. Also, for context: Every child ages 12-18 are required to have their name put in once, and then another slip for ever year older they get. So a 12 year old is once, a 13 year old twice, etc. But for the impoverished districts, and the poor like Katniss, it's even worse. They have a system where any child eligible for the reaping can take out tesserae, which is very meager food supplies, for themselves and everyone in their family. But for each one you take out, you have to put your name in one more time. So for the poor, it all accumulates. It makes it feel pretty dire and hopeless knowing they're more likely to be chosen because of more slips. Then the career districts are trained in a special academy and the best volunteer at 18, meaning the impoverished outlining districts rarely ever win or have any hope to win. Also, when Peeta throws Katniss the bread they were 11. Her dad had died in a mining accident and her mom went into a catatonic and depressed state and they were quite literally starving. She wasn't old enough yet to take out tesserae. So she went out and tried to sell some old baby clothes to feed Prim, but no one was willing to help. Except Peeta. He burnt the bread on purpose and took a beating from his mom so he could feed her. It saved them from starving but also reminded her of everything her dad had taught her about finding food. It gave her hope and she always felt she owed him and could never pay him back. These were written as a means to essentially teach younger audiences about war. The books are heavily political and don't shy away from the realities of it at all. Well worth a read. Loved the discussion here. @Kate Moore Yeah. I don't why Gary Ross (the director of the first movie) didn't do that. I'm just soo glad that Francis Lawrence took his place for Catching Fire and both Mockingjay movies because he actually stayed even closer to the books and I just wish he had directed the first movie instead of Gary because I felt like Francis would have had the common sense to hire child actors for those bakery flashback scenes
Haymitch being so nervous for her at the end is even more poignant when you know his backstory. In his games, 24 years prior to this, he outsmarted most of his competition and was seen as a possible problem, same as Katniss, so they killed his entire family, including his girlfriend. He's refused to get attached to anyone since to not risk it happening again. He's also, in the past 23 years been the mentor for 23 sets of tributes, all of whom have died, except for Katniss and Peeta. So he's very jaded about the whole thing. And the reason why he's so adamant about her grasping the seriousness of the situation
Things that are in the book but was never mentioned in the movie; Each district specializes in certain vocations. For example, District 12 where Katniss comes from is a mining district. Her father died in a mining accent and as a result her mother goes into a severe massive clinical depression where she no longer could take care of her daughters and herself. That is why Katniss was starving and Peeta threw the bread to her. When a person wins the Hunger Games that person not only wins a lot of money but they win a huge expensive house (located in the Victor's village in their district) and they also win food for their entire district. Prior to Katniss and Peeta, Haymitch was the only living winner of district 12. It was very rare for anyone from district 12 to win the Hunger Games. There is a lot more but I won't say it so not to spoil anything for the next Hunger Games movie that you will be watching.

Yes and emphasize Peeta threw the bread to HER. His mother was super strict and stingy (their family were a little better off than a lot of others in district 12 since they had a bakery). He saw her and knew she was starving, but he made sure she saw where the bread went so she could get some.
To be honest - all of it is present in the movie, it isn't said to our face for most part, but it's kinda obvious. Aside the district specialisations - it is kinda mentioned by few characters. Like Johanna complaining about getting bark clothes as a champion of lumber district.

I appreciate how Oak is impassioned at the very thought of forcing kids to fight to the death, completely callously sending them to be slaughtered and even smiling and laughing about it. It upsets you to the core doesn't it. Nonetheless this is an epic saga and a very poignant political commentary by the author on what happens when government is given too much power. Sort of an Orwellian dystopian scenario.

Yes and if you think about it that is exactly what happens at wars: children die, young soldiers die because of the decissions of a few powerful people.
In the end, even Cato was just a kid used as a pawn for the games. When Clove screamed for Cato before she died, it really showed how much of just a scared little girl she was too. And I like to believe that the talkshow host character, Caesar, genuinely did his job in a way that he hoped would help the tributes. But ultimately, he worked for snow and had to do his job. In the books, Katniss actually got her mockingjay pin from the mayor of district 12's daughter, Madge, who was the closest thing she had a to a friend growing up other than Gale. Madge's aunt, her mothers sister, apparently died in the games as a child and the pin belonged to her. The mockingjay as a symbol in general is really important because it was kind of an accidental breed that the capital never meant to actually happen. It was seen as a sort of symbol of rebelliousness. Even when reading the books, it was really hard to tell how much of Katniss's caring for Peeta was for the cameras or genuine. I think she actually really struggled with not knowing how she felt too, which is totally understandable.
Just like Kaniss and Peeta, Clove and Cato came from the same district. So they thought they would be able to leave together if they were last at this point. So any competitive tension between them would be gone.
I don't know if somebody said it already, but I would like to say, that the book had way more blood. All the deaths were way more gruesome. For example: Cato was slowly eaten alive by the dogs for the whole night, until Katniss couldn't take it anymore & killed him. She couldn't take him out of his misery sooner, because she used her last arrow to stabilize Peetas leg. The medicine didn't heal it magically in the book. It was just something against his blood poisoning. So because she took the arrow from him, the Capitol couldn't save his leg. Peeta got a facy leg prosthesis though.
the way i have watched the movies so many times and read comments regarding the books and this is the first time someone mentioned that in the books HE ONLY HAS ONE LEG?!

@@schokigirl1989 peetas leg being messed up comes up again in the second book when theyre running away from toxic fog and he cant run without help. Mags has to commit suide at that point so that finnick can carry peeta and they can escape
you're actually wrong. Peeta's leg heals exactly as in the movie, all thanks to the capitol's medicine Katniss gets for him. The difference with the movie is that when the mutts appear, one of them bits Peeta's leg and he's bleeding too much so Katniss needs to make a tourniquet to save his life, but since they're there for hours while the mutts with Cato, she leaves it for too long and bof that is that they can't save his leg later on and cut it. Also, Cato's death isnt until Katniss can't take it anymore, she wants to kill him for a long time before she does but she couldn't bc they made the arena be so cold that her and Peeta basically couldn't move and needed to hug the entire night to survive or they would have died bc of it, they just can separate and move once the sun comes up and it is warmer, the moment they can move Katniss goes to kill Cato

It is never said that Peeta can't run without help and in fact he runs a lot without help, the reason why Finnick needs to carry him is because Peeta is running slower than usual bc he hasn't recovered yet from the electric shock given to him by the electromagnetic field that he hit that day, which stopped his heart. He was still recovering from that so his physical state wasn't the best for the moment, so he was slower and that's how the fog got to him. And in the book it made their arms and legs shake and be out of control so they couldn't run properly, Peeta gets hit by it the most and that's why Finnick needs to carry him, in the book Katniss carries Mags so Finnick can carry Peeta but it all fails bc the fog also gets Katniss a lot, to the point she can't move her leg as to run with Mags's weight, and Finnick can't carry Peeta and Mags at the same time bc the fog made him unable to control his arms, and that's how Mags decides to die. The only times Peeta's prosthetic leg is mentioned in book 2 is at the very start when Katniss says he's still getting used to it, when Katniss's sees the male tribute of 11 who lost an arm on his first games which she compares to Peeta's case, when they're running from the fog some vines get tangled around that leg (but this also happens to Katniss) and when they get divided by Beetee's plan he mentions he wants Johanna and Katniss going to the beach bc they're the fastest, as Peeta is a little slower thanks to his leg and Finnick is simply slower than them.
What the movie doesn't have time to mention is that Heymitch has additional reason to be so jaded about the games, even aside from seeing so many young tributes killed; after his own victory the capital decided that he had "cheated", so in retaliation they killed his family and his girlfriend. Despite the propaganda, victors don't have it great at all, as we learn in more detail later.
A detail which they never revealed in the movie. They did reveal, however, that many of the attractive victors were forced into prostitution. When Johanna Mason refused, the Capitol killed her family and loved ones.

Another great series for you guys to watch. Caesar Flickerman (the host) is famous for turning any conversation around for the positive and trying to showcase every tribute for the best. Also this edition of the Hunger games it's the 74, so you can just imagine how many children we're killed. The people in 11 started to rebelled because they saw hope in Katniss.
@@rebel11201991if you count the victors from the 75th hunger games in too that it would be 1743 people in all, which would be about a tenth of a smaller district. And on average 145 people from each district died from the hunger games.
@Gracie Plays the 75th was part of that but I over did how many died when I counted that one. I did remember to account for the extras in the 50th and the 74th
Tbh, this is one of the few series that actually fairly closely followed the books. It also was one of the few series that (imo) has a sequel that is better than the first. Thank you for your input, guys!! :)

The whole casting was spot on. Both Jennifer and Josh are from kentucky, so they both understand 12 in a real way. Donald sutherland has an amazing letter that has been released he wrote to the director about snow (before filming), Elizabeth banks was a fan of the books. I think what sets it apart is that the actors got it, the got they understood the script is a very deep way.

As far as adaptions of YA books go? This is one of the most solid ones. I saw every single one in theaters with my grandmother and she loves them. Every single year we had the same older gentleman and his grandson sitting near us. And after the second movie, he said "See you next year!"
The three fingered salute she gave to the crowd when she volunteered was actually a funeral salute used to give respect to the dead as they send them on their way. She went in expecting to die, and they returned the gesture to honour her sacrifice. She later used it to say goodbye to Rue, and in both cases it came across as really genuine and heartfelt- at least in the books.
I love that you were so angry at the system right from the start. About the mockingjay pin: During the rebellion, the Capitol created birds called jabberjays, birds that could repeat entire conversions perfectly. The rebels just fed those birds bogus information and the jabberjays bred with mockingbirds, resulting in mockingjays, a rebel mascot of sorts.
There’s a lot in the books that didn’t make it into the movies but they did a pretty good job of presenting the overall story. One thing in the books that lacks explanation in the movies is the amazing science at the disposal of the Capitol. While district 12 & 11 are so poor and backwards the Capitol has total command of genetic engineering and other technologies. The Mutts (for mutants) that chase them are genetically engineered animals. The truly frightening thing in the books is they have been designed to have faces and voices of the other tributes so they are being chased by familiar faces.
Katniss and Haymitch are my favorite bond throughout the series. You’ll see what I mean when you keep watching. Rue’s funeral, such a beautiful scene. In both the books and the movies. She was the same age as Prim, so it add sense for Katniss to honor her, because she’s there in place of her sister. I honestly feel bad for Gale because had she not been picked, she and him would’ve fell together naturally, but now, he’s hurt, but not being petty, as he obviously took care of her family. There is an absolute difference between having feelings for someone and making someone you don’t know who could end up being a sponsor like you. And I feel he’s stuck in the middle cause he’s not really aware of the sponsors as I feel that is a player situation knowledge and not common knowledge ( I have read the books, but I don’t remember absolutely everything ). My heart breaks for Peeta because his home life isn’t all that great but he burned the bread on purpose to be able to toss it to Katniss knowing that he would get punished for it. His mom thinks that Katniss will win and that’s not hopeful to hear going into a battle of death. Stanley Tucci is bloody brilliant in his role as is Woody Harelson. They play the character absolutely perfectly and you can’t imagine anyone else playing the characters.
I never ship Gale and Katniss. Both of them just too similar. I can't see both of them compromise with each other. I can see them develope a relationship but I can't see the relationship will last.
idk if you've read the books or not, but no Katniss and Gale wouldn't have fell together naturally. He had feelings for her, but she didn't for him. And she wouldn't have gained them, in her mind they were too similar to each other. Peeta is described in the books from Katniss' pov as being like the sun. He's a fire, but a good fire, one that keep her warm. Whereas Gale is a blazing fire basically, like her, and they would never work. After peeta burnt that bread on purpose for her knowing he was gonna get a beating for it, and then showed up the next dsy with bruises, a dandelion bloomed and katniss saw it. Which to her represented hope/life. And that's how she viewed him/felt for him. He was her hope and represented new beginnings.
District 12 is located in current day West Virginia, and the Capitol is basically Denver. The districts are scattered around what remains of the USA, as a lot of it is flooded from raised sea levels, though the author was never too specific on the exact locations of most the districts. You get the general feeling that the original purpose of the districts was to retrieve certain resources from resource rich areas, but then the government became totalitarian and there has been little advancement across Panem because it's all about keeping the elites in the Capitol comfortable and happy, and maintaining that the districts never revolt again.
@@robertgronewold3326 I always got the feeling 13 was Nevada or New Mexico as they had Nuclear material and was higher than sea level so didn't flood. NY would have been under water,as it's practically at sea level.

Also, the first book tells you that the cameras don't show deaths or the 'bad' parts of the games. The cameras are programmed to only show pretty things. That's why Katniss puts Rue in a bed of flowers so that the cameras pick up the brutality of how she died. It's the first time the masses of the capital see it.
Nah, the deaths are shown, it's literally the reason for the games. What they usually don't show is the dirty stuff, so usually no poopin', sexual stuff, technicalities behind certain mechanism/traps (to keep the "magic"). They do not focus too long on the corpses themselves though.
They don't show the remaining tributes how the fallen tributes died, because they don't want to show what special skills, if any, the other tributes have to kill the fallen tributes.
10:12 It's hard to notice at 1st at the beginning. Peeta always loved Katniss, so when he would see her starving and hungry, he would sometimes burn the bread intentionally, to have a reason to have to throw out the bread. He gave some to the pigs, so his mom would hear the pigs going after the bread, then made sure to check that his mom wasn't looking, and threw the rest of the bread to Katniss. At 1st glance, it seems like he was being cruel. But as you learn more about the story, it becomes more clear that this was his way about secretly caring for Katniss.
Fun fact - the girl with the knife (Clove) is actually Isabelle Fuhrman who played Esther from the horror movie "Orphan" - took me a second to realise who it was.
The fact it said H on the sponsor gifts is because he sent messages along with the gifts. They were paid for by sponsors.. Haymitch is also the only victor from district 12. The books are so much more terrifying than the movies. The capitol really shows how F’d up they are.. like the “butlers” or “maids” in their suite for example… are people taken from the various districts, that have done something to upset the capitol (they hunt them down with the hover crafts we saw in the beginning) and they make them mute as a punishment.
I was 100% OBSESSED with this series as a young teen, so seeing someone else enjoy it watching it for the first time really brings joy to my heart. However, it is almost frustrating not to be able to be in the room with y'all to explain every little question you guys have and the significance behind everything because it gets SO deep. Really enjoyed the reaction, and hopefully you can one day enjoy the books to totally deep dive into this world! ALSO!! The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes (the prequel book that came out a few years ago) movie will be coming out soon that adds and even crazier depth to both the history of the Games, Panem, and President Snow. I would check that out as well!
Was I angry watching the movie? Nah. Reading the books? Constantly! xD The phrase of 'the odds being in your favour' is repeated several times throughout the story, always there to remind you that while yes, there *are* odds, technically, because there is luck, chance, skill, opportunity and random circumstance in the world, those odds will never, ever be in your favour if you are Katniss, if you are a child, if you are starving, if you are poor, if you are unsafe, basically if you are in the districts, the odds will not be in your favour and it's *by design*. So yeah, some anger is present at all times reading the books, as Katniss observes and learns the world around her ;)
One important book detail they took out for the movies: *Peeta's leg injury he got from Cato was a lot worse than shown in the movie* . The cut went down to the bone, was horribly infected, and Peeta had a crazy high fever and was a lil delirious. Shortly after it turned into a blood infection which is when they announced the feast (in the book Katniss had to knock him out w sleep syrup Haymitch sent bc Peeta was really not trying to let her go). Even with the meds Katniss got for Peeta, the mutts in the last part reopened his wound, Katniss had no other choice but to make a tourniquet with an arrow, and Peeta lost his leg but she saved his life. Just important to remember throughout the series; I've seen some reactors and movie watchers talk about how weak Peeta seems -but he literally only has one leg lol - and hollywood was *REALLY* tryna push a love triangle so Peeta was overly characterized as "meek" to oppose Gale's more masculinized character. P.S Love that straight out the gates you realized Haymitch's attitude isn't as much that he's a dick and an alcoholic, but because he was forced to mentor 23 years of children and sent them to their deaths (which is why he's an alcoholic) P.P.S To answer Oak's question about the class divides in Panem- the Career Tributes (the ones that train all their lives) are Districts 1,2, and 4 and they win almost every year. The closer you are to the Capitol usually determines how privileged you are, but pretty much if you're not from 1,2, or 4 your life sucks, but D11 and 12 definitely got it the worst (esp when you realize the district w all the black people is the one in charge of agriculture...hmm)....it also gets complex when you get further in the series bc even those in the Capitol aren't ALL rich (but they don't get reaped into the hunger games so)
Fun theory for foxface (the red head): we saw her doing well recognising berries and plant life in the training session. Lots of people think she actually committed su!cide because she knew she couldn’t win and wanted to go out with some dignity and ok her own terms Can’t wait for your reaction to the rest of the franchise!
Can't say I wouldn't have done the same to be honest, if I didn't have any crazy fighting skills. I wouldn't want to go up against Katniss or Cato. She was probably hoping she could outlive the others by basically hiding and keeping out of sight most of the time, but after allowing two victors from the same district, she would have known that Katniss and Peeta would've had to take down Cato and then Thresh (before the dogs were released and did that part for them anyway). And then it'd be her against those two. Plus, the mutts might have gotten her anyway and I would've chosen the berries over being eaten alive by mutant dogs with other victor's faces on them.
That's the thing about that training session scene though... she's basically just doing really amazing at a giant game of match. She's not really recognizing anything. I think she had just gotten so hungry that when she saw Peeta gathering the berries, she assumed they were safe to eat without waiting to see what they did first. With that being said though, I do like this theory a lot. I honestly would probably do the same.
I've always felt bad for Haymitch. For all of the people involved actually, but also for him specifically. He's the only living victor of district 12, so for decades he's had to train kids to fight in the games and all of them died. Not to mention the trauma he has from his own participation in the games. No wonder he's an alcoholic, he's actually remarkably well adjusted for someone who was forced to fight and kill in his teens and then to spend decades sending other teens to their deaths every year...
Just a fun fact about Cato and Clove: in the books they show more of them and in reality they were the true crossed lovers, and always reaching out to each other. It’s a shame we didn’t get more of every character in the movies.
This was one of the few movies/series I saw where I’d read the books first. I have to say I was very happy with how it was done despite being toned down for a PG-13 rating. The book, though YA, has very much R rated gore involving kids. My only complaint would be the “muttations” (the mutant dogs), which were supposed to be creatures that contained the eyes of the dead tributes. It’s more of a nitpicky thing though.
@@BaddMedicine I believe the reason for a lot of the changes was to make it more appropriate for the 12 rating, young teens were the main demographic - and the more people who can go see it in the cinema, the more money they make. Films can never portray the full story from the books, I would have loved to see them fully show the violence and gore, but honestly my main gripe is you really don't see Katniss struggling THAT much just to survive in the arena in the film. They're in the Games for just under 3 weeks, the films make it look like it only lasted a few days. She literally nearly dies from dehydration in the books and loses so much weight that when she comes out she barely recognises herself in the mirror.
@@BaddMedicine I think it just would've been too difficult to quickly & clearly convey the connection between the dead tributes & the mutts. In the book, the mutts had the hair color & eyes of each of the dead tributes & wore collars with their district numbers. Since the book is narrated by Katniss, you experience her confusion of whether these mutts were actually made out of their bodies, or just made to look like them, whether the mutts could remember who killed them, etc. Katniss is especially scarred of the "Glimmer" mutt because she thinks it's trying to avenge her gruesome death by the tracker jackers.
The burn medicine and the soup both came from sponsors, they just went through Haymitch, which is why the message is written by him. I believe the gift itself is simply paid for by the sponsor, I don't remember if Haymitch is the one who picks them. As for Districts 1, 2, and 4, they are what they call Career Districts. Technically they are not allowed to train anyone for the hunger games before the reaping where they get minimal training in the capital for a couple of days, like 3 or 4 at the most. Still, these Career Districts pick a boy and girl and train them since they are little so they can volunteer when they are like 18. I also believe those districts are in fact richer, and hence the people in them are better fed, live in better conditions, and therefore the volunteers are hale and hearty, and you guys are right about the class division being on purpose, to keep them separated and create animosity between the Districts to stop them from joining forces.
If I remember correctly the district from where the victor comes gets more supplies throughout the year so it's kind of a vicious cycle when it comes to riches and I also seem to remember that district 2 is responsible for providing security for the capitol and that's why they have more victors bc of the military training. I could be wrong about any of this i haven't read the books in at least 8 years
Having just recently reread the books, as a mentor, while Haymitch cannot personally send his tributes any gifts, he can however control what gifts he does or does not allow them to have. In the beginning of the games, it's not shown in the movie but Katniss was struggling to find water for 2 days and almost died of dehydration. She tried screaming "water!" at the sky to get some from a sponsor but when none comes, she knows that someone in the Capitol wants to send her water but Haymitch won't let the gift through and then she realizes that the only reason why he would do that is because he knows she's so close to finding it herself. "There's someone out there who wants to buy me water only Haymitch is refusing to let it go through. As my mentor, he gets to control the flow of gifts from the sponsors...Is he trying to make me suffer for defying him? Is he directing all the sponsors towards Peeta? Is he just too drunk to even notice what's going on at the moment? Somehow I don't believe that and I don't believe he's trying to kill me off by neglect either...There's only one good reason Haymitch could be withholding water from me. Because he knows I've almost found it" (pages 168 and 169 of the first book)
This is another series that you should totally look into reading/listening to ( I promise, it’s much shorter than the Harry Potter series😅). It’s scary to see some of the parallels to real life, you can see how they got to this point as a society. The author does a great job depicting the mentality of war and ptsd.
The people know that the “game makers” control everything in the arena. The animals at the end were created by the game makers for the “finale.” This is one of those things explained in the books, but it becomes a lot more obvious in the next movie as well - they talk more about the ‘making’ of the games.
These guys have quickly became one of my comfort reaction channels. I legit saw this post and jolted up in my bed from anticipation!!! So exited for the series!!!

the books are killer, literally lol. SO good, the characters are so complex and the world building is so in depth and well fleshed out. the second in the franchise is my fav book and movie, catching fire is sooooo good
I once did a psychology/paper on the Hunger Games and it was about how to teach Hope to a class. The title of my paper was Hope is the only thing stronger than fear... I got an A on the paper and two semester ago I got to teach it to my graduate class!!!
I just reread the books last week and it was interesting comparing the movies and books. One of the main differences is that the books are in first person so we are only seeing things how Katniss does and also so her vulnerabilities more and what she is thinking on the inside when she makes the choices she does. I hadn’t read the books since I was in 4th grade so it was interesting reading them again, especially after having more knowledge of the world and was able to see the depth better. I have autism and the hunger games has become a big special interest for me lately, that’s I why I bought the books and read them again plus have watched hours of people reacting to the movies (like this video).
I remember watching this and loving it. I watched the second one and loved it more, instantly went into the books. Finished the books and was waiting for the last 2 movies.
At first I was irritated with Oak until I realized he wasn't understanding that you need to teach people about why this is wrong and that can't be done without showing the "bad, wrong messed up sick parts".
Panem is the United States after a cataclysmic event that leaves just the center of the country above water. District 12 is what we consider now the Appalachian Mountains.
One of the details I feel isn't elaborated on in the movie is the bread Peeta threw to Katniss, it's heavily implied in the book that he saw her and burned the bread on purpose so it couldn't be used and he could throw it to her. I feel like it adds a lot to that moment. Love your reactions - I appreciate your open minds and deep commentary!
Fun fact from the prequel: Snow was actually in love with a girl from district 12 as a teenager. She won the 10th Hunger Games. There are lots of things about Katniss that would remind him of her, and not in a good way

I just started reading the books, but my brother's read all of them. Something he explained to me is that the farther out the districts are, the more poor they are. 12 (their district) is the poorest. Another thing I've heard is that the ending was a lot more disturbing of the books.
Plutark in the book was wonderful. The public loved him. Katniss loved him. He would make the tributes seem amazing. She often couldn't take in front of people and he would make a joke or be really kind to her. And the other tributes. I am glad it made it out alive at the end of the book
The movies cuts out a lot of the background of how Panem is set up. - The districts are indeed divided into different classes. Typically the outlying disctricts (like 12 & 11) are the poorer and less trained districts. They hate the Hunger games and everything about it. The upper districts (in particular 1, 2 and 4) are all very wealthy, because they deliver valuable goods to the Capital and have good relations with them, despite still being part of the hunger games. District 2 is actually the place where the Capitol gets their Peacekeepers and military vehichles. These districts also see the Hunger games as a way to bring honor and glory to their districts. - Does the people know about Capitol manipulating the games? For the most part, yes. The audience is well aware of the way the Capitol manipulates the environment and tributes, in order to create excitement. Sometimes the Capitol even kills a tribute themselves, just to remind people that they can, though this is rare. There are cases though, where Capitol manipulates the games in ways, which the general audience knows nothing about. This comes more into play in the next movie though, but let's just say Capitol likes to play mind games with their victims. - Sponsors. The sponsors are a highly important aspect of the games. The medicine Katniss recieved was only sent by Haymitch, but he didn't pay for it. He sought out a potential sponsor and got them to sponsor the medicine, which Haymitch was then able to send out. Haymitch needs to be very careful when he decides to send these gifts, because they are extremely expensive, and their cost increases as the game progresses. Some tributes even recieve powerful weapons from their sponsors, if they are well-liked enough. They actually cut a scene from the books, after Rue's death, where Katniss recieves a gift from District 11, with a basket of bread. This was both a very expensive gift for such a poor district, as well as being the first incident of a district sending a gift, to a tribute from another district. At least as far as Katniss knows, as we learn this from her perspective.
A detail I haven’t seen many people talk about: Foxface was an expert in plants. There’s a scene at the beginning of the movie where she shows off this prowess in training. It’s been a while since I’ve read the book, but I believe that Katniss points this out as well. She knew the berries were nightlock. It’s extremely sad because Katniss knew she was a survivor and she has way more attention in the books. Her death is so saddening when you know that she knew what berries she was eating.
katniss was way less starved in the movie. in the book, she would constantly eat asap and as much as she could when capitol food was around, because of the starvation in D12. seeing her and peeta being so unphased at the train kinda makes you feel like its not that bad there
I believe in the book, the mutts were actually the fallen tributes who were mutated or something. The imagery for the mutts and like the personality behind their eyes is insane.
This is one of the more faithful book to movie renditions I've seen. It just gets better. You guys should follow up by watching Lawrence in Red Sparrow
In the books, they actually put the berries in their mouths and after that Claudius says that they both won the 74th Hunger Games, they immediately spit out the berries and ran into the lake (which was near them) and rinsed their mouths . Another important thing is that Peeta lost his leg, the wound caused by Cato did not heal well (and the mutts/dogs that chased them) grabbed his leg when they tried to climb into the Cornucopia.
I don’t think anyone else has mentioned this, but the last time District 12 had a victor it was Haymitch. And that was at the 50th Hunger Games where as this is the 74th, so Haymitch saw 48 kids die before this victory. I’ll go into more detail when Catching Fire is posted!
I love the empathy skills of the oak like she immediately made the interpretation that haymitch probably saw so many deaths so he's alcoholic and careless about tributes. I had never realised it until I heard from someone else. I love the oak reactions dont let him be excluded from the videoss
I really love these films. I think some people assume they are kids films, which is definitely not the case. It’s such an engrossing world and the performances are always strong. They’re great adaptations of the books too. Currently midway through the prequel book set only 10 years in to to annual hunger games which shows how the games developed. Re: the sponsors, one thing I loved in the book not included is that Kathie receives a parcel of bread sent from the people of Rue’s district to thank her for helping Rue and honouring her death. Having said that the Rue death scene always gets to me.

Districts 1 and 2 were way more rich than 11 and 12. There were kids who trained their entire lives for the games and there were lots of volunteers from 1 and 2. The kids from 1 and 2 typically banded together until they were the last ones, killing off everyone else in a group to increase their odds.
my favourite part abut the hunger games is the irony of "May the odds be ever in your favour" because we're shown throughout this whole movie how unfair the games can be i.e, the game makers manipulating the games with fire/rules/dogs or how in order for poor districts to sustain their lives and families they can offer up more times their entered into a reaping in return for oil and grain. Gale had his name in 42 times during the reaping. But my ALL TIME favourite moment is when we see Cato come to the realization that for his whole life, he thought the games were his to win. He trained, he volunteered, he was likeable, THE ODDS WERE ALWAYS IN HIS FAVOUR. unfortunately he found out the hard way that when in the arena his odds were equal to everyone else because the game makers saw him as any other tribute. He was manipulated to think his life matter when in reality, the odds were never in his favour. I could watch a whole movie just from Cato's POV. His story is so sad. Great Reaction!
One of the big things that affected future things in the book series that wasn't shown in the movies is that the mutt attacks at the end of the games gives Peeta an injury that causes him to lose a leg. He has a prothesis in future books.
I absolutely love the fashion in this. According to the fashion designers who worked on this franchise, the clothes that the people at the Capitol wear are very extravagant to express wealth, but there's also a lot of black elements to represent how dark their soul is -- at the end of the day, they love to watch kids kill each other.
The books go into more detail about how the Hunger Games work, so basically from the ages of 12 to 18 everyone has to add their name into the reaping X the number of years they’ve participated but you can add your name in more times to get extra servings of food. You can add an additional serving up to each person in your house times the number of years you’ve been in the reaping, so for Katniss she entered in her max number by adding 1 (required entry) + 3 (total family members) x 5 (years) = 20 entries. Typically the poorest and oldest kids from the districts get picked because they have to support their families, if Katniss didn’t add extra food portions she would only be in the reaping 5x instead of 20x however her family would have starved. The fact that Prim gets picked having her name in only 1x is crazy. The Hunger Games is a game of risk v reward so when they say may the odds be ever in your favor that’s what they’re referring to.

these books affected me very deeply to the point where I have been unable to reread them to this day. They’re wonderful! But also incredible heartbreaking and especially in the world we live in today, a cautionary tale. It’s also insane how the promo for these movies missed the mark completely and promoted the love triangle just like the capitol were solely focused on the love story. It’s wild how on the nose those entire story is especially today. The irony of prim being chosen the first time she put her name in is that katniss had put her name in so many times for food that she lost count. And yes, oak, I was pretty much full of rage during every book and movie lmao but so are the characters (rightfully so)! Now that me being a downer is out of the way lol I do love this story and these characters and am excited to see you guys react to it!
Funny detail, when Katniss and Peeta go out to find some food, they are really hungry. When she finds the berries he has collected she thinks he’s eaten some and that the canon sounded for him. However when she finds him alive, she realized he didn’t eat not even one berry, meaning that no matter how hungry he was, he wouldn’t eat without her (like he was saving the berries in case that was all they could find)
You are correct, the books are dynamite. The movies do a great job of telling the story but there just isn't sufficient time to explain all the details given in the books. However, this is still one of the best book to movie translations I have ever watched.

I just finish listening to the whole series, then got home and the notification for this video popped up! I've listened and read the books several times, so glad you guys are doing them.
With the bread being real, in district 12 they mostly only have wholemeal bread, and white bread is only available to the most wealthy, so Katniss has likely never had white bread other than maybe on special occasions.

Ooooh, glad you guys are getting into these. I slept on these for a few years, but they ended up being far better than I expected. A really well-done series of films.
