@@EssEll9791Not "maybe". It's 100% a Bruce Lee reference. The entire film is riddled with references and other characters from famous and classic Chinese films. Like, for example, the couple. In the English sub, they're told to be "Paris and Helen of Troy" from a Greek mythos, but their real names are "YangGuo" and "XiaoLongNu," and I think they're, like, basically the WuXia novel equivalent for Romeo and Juliet? I'm not super sure, but I do know that their history goes way back and far beyond this one movie. There's a whole video dissecting all of the references by "Accendeted Cinema". Seriously, go check it out, that's a quality channel right there lol

@@heykenzo4284 heck yes, I'll check that out! Not enough exposure to eastern culture and philosophy so anything I can get is a treasure. Anime is great and all but there is so much more to learn and see, as a Westerner anyways. Thanks for the tip!

The knife throwing scene is peak comedy for me, both actors are so invested and it just sells the absurdity of it that much more, and to lead into the Coyote/Road Runner scene immedieately after, absolutely brilliant. Bill Murray said this is ine of his favorite movies of all time, and im inclined to agree.

One of the funniest movies ever made! (Maybe the funniest movie ever lowkey) Me and cousins use to watch this movie over and over. I can legit say I've seen this movie over 30 times. The throwing knife scene gets me every time 🤣🤣🤣🤣

coolie is a transliteration from chinese word 苦力, a name for their job actually, these two characters literally mean bitter and strength, you can get the idea of what coolie do for a living. this word also was used a lot back in 1860s, when chinese workers contributed too many for building railways in usa (and canada in 1880s).

There are basically three movies in the Wuxia genre that exemplify its tropes and conventions for us westerners: - Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon: Starring Chow Yun Fat and Michelle Yeoh, this is the hard hitter. It was an absolute giant when it released. - Hero: Starring Jet Li, still a solid movie. Has a lot of the classic tropes like special secret martial arts techniques, political intrigue, and romance. - House of Flying Daggers. I never saw this one, but I only ever heard good things about it. It's also big in the romance and political intrigue. Then again, there are another set of movies that are a loving homage and parody of Wuxia films: The Kung Fu Panda movies.

The superhuman stuff in the movie is based on Chinese Wuxia/Xianxia fiction, specifically the phycial and spiritual sections in which you just get so good at something/pray and meditate so much you are able to achieve supernatual feats. The musicians for example were manifesting what they imagined their attacks would look like, and the lion's roar

When the beast called the main guy "master" It means that he recognizes him as a better martial artist. I'm not entirely sure of the historic culture, but as far as I know when a martial artist got beaten by someone, they either accept their mentorship or leave.

there's a good youtube video where a guy breaks down a bunch of the references in this movie. Donut yelling "what are you prepared to do" as he dies is an Untouchables reference I never put it together and Ive seen the untouchables at least a dozen times.

Stephen chow uses a lot of old film references here, most from old Hong Kong wuxia movie classics as well as Hollywood movie references. The top hat was a homage to Martin Scorsese “Gangs of New York”. Even when noodle man was on his death bed, he shouted in English “ what are you going to do?” Before he died. This was a reference to Sean Connery in the movie “The Untouchables”.

great reaction haha such a fun movie glad you enjoyed it , has anyone suggest or have you already seen pitch black? its a super under rated movie with what is now a start studded cast, good action syfy feel i think youd enjoy it and another one that is finally getting its flowers is the raid redemtion and the raid 2 , those are like master classes at transitions choreography and solid films all around , keep up the hustle homie

People isn't aware that this is a 2004 film. The film is very advance for that period with their CGI and sound effects. I was freaking 8y.o when this was released and it's the era of Looney Tunes and Matrix.

I think think movie is suppose to resemble the cut scenes in video games every shot and character movement is suppose to represent that. The one that hit the Mark was when the landlord was chasing the girl across the court .

Donut’s last words were “What are you… prepared to do?” It’s a reference to The Untouchables. It was the last words of Sean Connery’s character. There are lots of references and homages to other movies, both Kung Fu and other movies. Many of the older actors were big names in the heyday of Kung Fu movies.

I think the meaning of the ending of last fight scene is not the main character kill the villain but want to teach him about that skills, about that meaning of kungfu in the skills buddha palm u can even see that in the eye of the beast right after main character said want to teach him for me thats good writing and acting , must seen movie

I think healing from the snake bites did do a lil bit to unblock his chi and his subsequent ass beatings after finished unblocking it. But yeah the snake bites didn't GIVE him the abilities they were just hanging around.
