There are no words for how epic One Day More is in the actual show. This was great but seeing it in all its glory, with the revolutionaries marching and waving flags etc while singing this..the chills! Please go see it if you can, it's worth it. Genuinely one of the best musical theater experiences you can have.

Most plays/musicals have an intermission halfway through, yes. It lasts about 20 minutes. The lights in the theatre go up and, if you want, you can go stretch your legs, go to the bathroom, grab a drink, etc. The thing about the romantic triangle that never was, for me anyway, is that it's another layer of Victor Hugo's social commentary. (The musical is based on a novel by the same name, written by Victor Hugo.) Eponine and Cosette were raised together, until Valjean came to rescue Cosette. Before then, Eponine was heavily favored by her parents, obviously. But the little girls were essentially of the same social class. Because Valjean is now rich and living under false pretenses, he and Cosette pass for a sort of low bourgeois family. Cosette was educated in a convent. Eponine has had no education. Marius comes from the gentry, and even higher social class. Living in the slums (where he meets Eponine and his revolutionary friends) is something he does to defy his family. But he always has the option of going home. So while he sees Eponine, he simply doesn't *see* her. He's better than most in that he appreciates the lower classes and their struggles, but that's not really his world. As that commenter said, when he first sees Cosette, she's giving poor people money in the street. That's something he recognizes. Eponine would never do that. In fact, she still has to steal to survive.
@EhrineAshbark
@EhrineAshbark Год назад
I'm not sure it's entirely fair to Eponine to say she would _never_ do that, as I think she's a caring enough person who'd help someone desperate if she could, but the fact that (as you mention) she has to steal to survive means she couldn't help that way even if she wanted to.
@LadyOndyne
@LadyOndyne Год назад
@@EhrineAshbark yes and no. Musical Eponine is kind but book Eponine is not really. Her crush on Marius is more in the possessive way and the "he is rich" way. In fact she is quire selfish and even hides a letter from Eponine. She never shows her interest on him, to him. While the love of Marius and Cosette is not really love at first glance, at first Marius thinks poor Cosette is not really pretty.

It’s more that Marius never registered Eponine as being interested in him than an outright rejection of her affection. Eponine loves Marius enough and is selfless enough to help him woo Cosette inspire of her own feelings. Also, the t is silent in “Javert” and Valjean’s name ends with the “ean” sound of Shaun, not Gene

Yeah. One thing you learn quickly in this show is that Marius is dense as brick about Eponine XD.

@@MadameChristie I was argue that he isn’t dense and she never fully showed her interest in him to him AT ALL. We as the audience know, but he doesn’t. Congrats on reaching the Act 1 finale! I won't lie, I got kinda teary-eyed knowing that you were hearing 'One Day More' for the first time, a song that is hailed as being one of the greatest Act 1 closers in musical theatre history. To answer your question, with shows that are split between 2 acts, there will more than likely be a 10 to 15 minute intermission in between Act 1 and Act 2 where people can use the restroom, get refreshments, etc. I can't wait for you to drop the next part! Thanks for letting us come along on your journey!

First off, thanks for featuring my comments in this video. So glad you found them helpful, as I've really enjoyed watching you discover this amazing show. I've seen it countless times in the theater (and watched this concert repeatedly), and while I understand the 10th anniversary concert was for super fans who probably knew the show inside and out, some of the cuts are just baffling, particularly the sequence that starts Act II, as it explains (a) why Valjean heads to the barricades, (b) how he knows who Marius is and that Cosette is in love with him, and (c) how Valjean and Eponine know each other. - When the curtain comes up on Act II, the students are building the barricades in the street. Javert shows up and volunteers to gather information for the insurrectionists, who don't know he's police. - Marius sees Eponine at the barricades dressed as a boy. Eponine says she wants to be with him; he tells her it's too dangerous for her and asks her to deliver a letter to Cosette explaining that he's joined the fight at the barricades. - Eponine slips into Valjean's garden, where she meets Valjean, gives him the letter, and says it's for Cosette from a boy at the barricades. Valjean thanks Eponine, and warns her to stay out of sight because "There's danger in the streets tonight." - Valjean opens the letter, and he reads what Marius wrote to Cosette: "Now that I know that you love me, it is harder to die. I pray that God will bring me home to be with you." (These words will be relevant later.) - Moved by Marius' words, and realizing that Marius is the key to Cosette's happiness, Valjean puts on a military uniform and departs for the barricades. - Eponine decides to return to the barricades, which is where Act II opens in the concert. One last thing: After Eponine sings "On My Own," you'll see footage of the barricades assembling as they did in the original London and Broadway productions. Much of the Act II action takes place on and in front of the barricades, and at certain points in the original production, the entire stage revolved so you could see action on the other side of the barricades. It's a stunning set piece in context, but the random cut-aways in the concert don't make as much sense if you haven't seen that staging.
@okcdog5439
@okcdog5439 Год назад
I loved the original set design. In general, I only have access to Broadway touring shows but I have seen Les Mis 5 or 6 times. I also saw it with the the new set and staging. I was unimpressed. I know this is a little off-topic but I would love to know your impression of the changes. Maybe I'm just being a big baby because I don't like that they changed it.
@sjlinnyc
@sjlinnyc Год назад
@@okcdog5439 Agreed. While I like the projections and some of the choices in the revised production, the decision to get rid of the turntable stage and the barricades set was a huge mistake. The story is one of revolution, so the turntable made the staging into one big metaphor. And the image of Eponine standing between the two barricade pieces as they twisted and merged at center stage is stamped onto my brain; it still catches my breath to think about it, 30+ years after seeing it for the first time. And let's not even get into how horribly diminished the aftermath of the barricade battle is in the revised staging; it made me sad to see how cheaply it was handled. That said, the power of this show is in its score, and I would probably put up with the cheap staging just to hear that beautiful score live again.

I have read the novel more than once and the issue of the letter is not exately how you wrote. First there is a letter that Cosette sends to Marius, witch was delivered by Eponine just before dying (Cosette said that love Marius, but she would have to leave to London with Jean Valjean). Then Marius sent (by Gavroche) a letter to Cosette saying that he love her, but he would die and when she would read that letter his soul would be beside her. Gravoche delivered the letter to Jean Valjean and he read the letter instead Cosette.

So glad that you are enjoying this! I will add one thing about the "In My Life". There is a cut part just after Cosette initially sings where Valjean comes in and has a "dialogue" with her. In this bit, Valjean worries how he has kept Cosette fairly secluded with no one other than himself for company. We also learn that Cosette doesn't remember her early years and begs Valjean to tell her about the truth of the past, which he denies her say it's not time. You get to see their relationship as father and child. One which they love each other, but the parent overprotects the child.

Fun fact related to Cosette and Eponine both being fantastic singers, they both have a history of providing the singing voices of beloved Disney Princesses. Lea Salonga who plays Eponine was the singing voice for Princess Jasmine in the famous 1992 song "A Whole New World" from the movie Aladdin and she was also the singing voice of 1995's Mulan. And Judy Kuhn who plays Cosette was the singing voice of Pocahontas and the well-known "Color of the Wind" song. Basically it's a "Battle of the Disney Princesses" :)

'One Day More' means so to me. When I first joined theater we did Les Mis and as a freshmen it was a big deal! I played Eponine and loved every bit of it, it was one of my favorite roles I ever got. Four years later, I've technically graduated and had one final show during the final week of school for our Dinner Theater where it's a compilation of songs and monologues to a theme, anyway our final song to end the performance was 'One Day More' and I got to play Eponine one last time. It was bitter sweet, my first and last character in that department.

Yes, this was the end of Act I. There would now be a 15-20 minute intermission for actors and audience. Run to the restroom, grab a drink, etc. If you can work out your schedule and can afford it (not as expensive as a Broadway show but still not cheap), you won't regret seeing the tour. Just saw it here in Philadelphia in November (third time seeing the tour, which matches my times seeing Wicked (Broadway and tour) and The Book of Mormon), and it's an awesome production. Lots of scenery and costume changes. Entire show runs nearly 3 hours, intermission included. I'd recommend getting seats on whatever level you can afford but try to get your tickets more in the center of the theater rather than on the sides - they use the entire stage area and if you're off to one side you can miss some of the side action.
@raniwasacyborg
@raniwasacyborg Год назад
Many theatres will also have a little announcement five minutes and then one minute before act two starts, so you can safely leave your seat and not have to worry about missing the start of the second half. If you see the show live, I recommend prioritising the bathroom first if you can as those queues tend to get long quickly with so many people going at once! (Although the same will be true of the refreshments stand, so if you go with a friend maybe team up to make sure you get through both queues with minimal rushing)

My friend, you really need to pick a musical show that is touring near you (or come to visit here in Manhattan and take in a show on Broadway). Your comment earlier about how this was like opera is actually spot on. Musicals which are "sung through" like Les Mis (all the show is done through singing) are the modern evolution of European Operas. Operas have their own 'rules' for composition and staging etc. and generally they don't make them any more. Musicals have evolved in their place to cater to the ever-changing tastes and preferences of modern audiences. There are a number of excellent musicals you can continue you exploration with after you finish Les Mis, but I'll wait until after the finale to suggest them (watching your reactions and judging what you would find a good next step). There's something for everyone's tastes when it comes to musicals. From the jukebox musicals (a show about rock or pop performers featuring their discography set to a show usually about how they made it or the lead singer's life, etc.) to the high art operatic pieces like Les Mis and Phantom. Heck, even ABBA of "Dancing Queen" fame wrote a musical called (and about) Chess, of all things (really about 1980's Cold War Propaganda struggles, but it uses Chess competitions to become Grandmaster as the story setting). There's a LOT of musicals out there and they all are unique. But for now, stretch your legs with the intermission and when you come back to this one... bring tissues. Not gonna lie. Ugly cry catharsis after ugly cry catharsis dead ahead.

'One Day More' is certainly a beautiful way to end the first act but also sets up for the second act. Each character starts out singing their own story and then they start to sync up and end with everyone singing the same line. I've always taken this as a summary of the first act where all the different lives have overlapped up to this point but now they have all come together at the same place and time in history and are now completely intertwined for what is to come.

A little musical intulude they take out of the concert versions is Eponine recognising Cosette and lamenting how they children together and how different their lives have become. Anothe musical intulede removed from this is During in My Life (Adult Cosette's first solo) where Valjean laments how lonley their lives have been with just the 2 of them, Cosette then questions why they have had to live this way, always alone and secretive. Valjean basically shut her down with a version of the I'll tell you when you're older speech.

Intermissions are 15 to 20 minutes - but Les Mis is generally kept at a tight 15 minutes because of the length of the show. It's a tight squeeze to finish before union overtime rules kick in for the orchestra and crew. And when a matinee runs long, it cuts into the dinner break between shows. Which is only about an hour before everyone has to be back to get the sets redressed and back into makeup and costumes. How they all survive the 2 show days is still beyond me.

I've worked backstage in professional theatre for over 20 years, if you get the chance, 100% GO WATCH THIS! It's one of my favorite musicals. Yes, they are costumes, and yes, everyone gets an intermission. Even actors and performers get a chance to go to the bathroom and get a drink. You mentioned in the last videos the little bits where it looks like they had more action and props and such. In this concert version, they had bits like that pre-filmed on the regular stage set and showed them on monitors. They basically served to fill in some of the plot bits that get skipped over in the concert version, and provide something it look at during the bits when it's mostly just the orchestra playing. For the concert version they have a full orchestra, and an absolutely ENORMOUS choir backing the principle characters. You just don't get that depth of sound with the regular size cast, but you do get the added effect of knowing that the performers are right there, and can hear your reactions and sort of see you out in the audience. they get energy from the audience as much as the audience feels the actors emoting on stage. It's one of the very best things about theatre.

I'm so happy youre reacting to my favorite musical (even have a tat inspired by a song)! its such an amazing show and the music is so inspiring. I know some others have made suggestions for other musicals and I'd like to also recommend the 25th Anniversary version of Phantom of the Opera (a stunning show) and the 2017 proshot Falsettos! Falsettos doesn't get enough love and is such an incredible and moving musical with catchy, funny, and heartbreaking songs

Les Miz has already come and gone in Detroit. We saw it Dec 21 at the Fisher Theater; purchased tickets in the summer. Depending on where you sit, tickets are usually $100 and up. That's through Ticketmaster; a bit cheaper if you purchase from the box-office in advance. It usually comes around every 3 years, so watch for 2025; you have to see it live. I try to see it each time and this last one was my 6th time. Looking forward to your Part 5! ❤

Yes!!! I'm probably going to see it live when it comes to Chicago in Feb!!! Also, I think you would really like Miss Saigon for your next musical. It's written by the same people who wrote Les Mis and there's a ProShot of the actual play done for the 25th anniversary. Hope you give it a shot

This is so cool, watching you experience this. One Day More is the most goose-bumpy experience I've ever had in an audience seat, that full company of singers burying us in that wild interweaving of lyrics, with a full orchestra at full blast (yes, you get a full orchestra as well on Broadway). And now I'm lost in time as well: did you make it to Detroit, did you get to experience this for yourself? I'm so curious. If you did, good for you! I hope it was great! If not, well... make it a life goal to make this happen!

I´ve read the novel, wich is very large (5 volumes), but it´s wondeful. In the Victor Hugo novel what happened was that Marius decided to fight in the barricade when he knew that Cosette was going to leave with Jean Valjean (because he thought that he was been found by Javert). Marius sent a goodbye letter to Cosette saying that he couldn't live without her and so he was going to fight with his friends in the barricade and maybe die, but Jean Valjean caught and read the letter instead Cosette and decided to go to the barricade to try saving Marius to Cosette.

I will highly recommend that you experience going to a theatre. FYI, theatre here in the UK is where you watch musical or play. Cinema is where you watch films. Yes, there is an interval between Acts so people can go for a break (buy drinks, use loo, stand up and walk about, etc). Depending on the show, it can be between 10-20 minutes.

Yayyy, I've been waiting so much for part 4, but these were the quickest 20 minutes of my life! :O I'm really enjoying your videos! If you have the chance, you should really go to the musical. There will be a break for everyone, but I don't recall how long, maybe 30 to 45 minutes. It's an amazing experience and you are really being absorbed in it. Afterwards, on my way home to the station, I felt incredibly French, was singing in my head and wondering where would be a good place for a barricade to fight for the people.

Judy Kuhn is Cosette, she is the singing voice for Pocahontas. She's got a wonderful voice though, I loved hearing her in a live concert of the Chess musical. Lea Salonga is Eponine, and she was the singing voice for Jasmine and Mulan. :) Just lil fun facts.

You really should check out some local Reparatory theater. From your appreciation of THIS, I know for a fact that you'd enjoy it. There are so many good shows. You don't have to see these big productions. Local Reps do great jobs at these classic shows. Of course not many will end up doing Les Mis. But there are so many good shows that are incredible in their own ways. I encourage you to check it out. There's nothing like seeing it Live.

Keep an eye on the comments for pt 5. There's a massive but short gap in the narrative again. Think of Valjean as a very soft annunciation of John if it helps. Just like his first name. And javert is a hard J and silent T.

Haha this is so wholesome!! You should consider seeing if there's a theatre in your area that touring Broadway shows come through, seeing tours is a great way to get the Broadway experience (or something close to it) without going to New York.

By the way - if you want to see more of Lea Salonga's amazing acting and singing, there is a video of Lea: highlights from MISS SAIGON. (It's a little over 13 minutes.) Lea originally did MISS SAIGON at age 18 in London and age 20 on Broadway, but she returned to the Broadway show for several months in 1999, then did a short run in the Philippines at the end of 2000 when she was 29 (the video uses footage from that production), and closed the Broadway run in January 2001. I think you'll be blown away.

Wow, it's been years since I've watched this. I forgot who was in this cast. Lea Salonga (star of another show Miss Saigon, and Disney's Princess Jasmine and Mulan), Judy Kuhn (Disney's Pocahontas)... and the two original cast members Michael Ball (playing Marius) and Colm Wilkinson (playing Valjean), who both defined what those roles would be and remain to this day the gold standard of those roles. Wow. I'm loving this trip down memory lane! You should DEFINITELY go and see it if you can! What a way to break into the world of musical theatre. :)

The Act 1 finale is amazing - such complexity! In fact, at the very end of this concert (after all the curtain calls and speeches from others involved in creating Les Mis) the composer describes writing the Act 1 finale as "a nightmare, a huge traffic jam in my head".

17:40 As good as this is- and it's *excellent* - there is absolutely nothing like seeing the actual production close Act One with this number. If you haven't made plans/already seen a live show, PLEASE watch one of the many vids on YT of Pro-Shots/Award Performances/Bootlegs that show the choreography, staging, and most of all, flag-waving. It NEVER fails to bring tears to my eyes and I can't tell you how many times I've seen it either live on stage or on video. The music in this show is the very definition of "soul-stirring". I love watching you experience it.

Once in London at the Palace Theater we had tickets to Les Miserables, and they were on the front row--center. I had seen Les Miz twice before, so this was a great change--up to be just a couple of steps away from the performers (if the orchestra wasn't in the way). Several times an actor or actress would look at us, and it felt like they were singing just to us. Just a great experience that was.

Yes, most musicals have an intermission in the middle where people can get up and get concessions and go to the bathroom. Most of the theaters you go to will flicker the lights or start to dim them in the lobby area to signal that the show is about to start and to get back to your seats. I hope you get to go see Les Mis on stage. There's nothing like seeing musical theater live.

I absolutely love your reactions to this! This is my favourite performance for this show, with some of my favourite cast members, so seeing your reaction to this has been an absolute treat. And yes, the actresses who play Cosette and Eponine in this are both fantastic. I'm also a huge fan of the actor who plays Marius (Michael Ball) and he has one of my favourite musical numbers in this coming up later in the show (he's also the person who originated the role of Marius). I really hope you decide to do more musicals in the future because I'm really enjoying these reactions! As I and many others have already mentioned, the 25th anniversary of Phantom of the Opera is a great one to look at, but there are also a lot of other filmed musicals available on RU-vid that are really good quality. Also yes, all musicals have an intermission midway through the show that usually goes for around 15-20 mins I think.
