I don’t hate Gale, I just think he isn’t right for Katniss. I also never really liked the whole team Peeta vs team Gale stuff since that severely undermines the actual intent behind the characters and the relationships. I think (hope) that’s the way most people feel.
Definitely how I feel. I spoke more of this in the book videos but by the 10% mark of this book, i didn't care about the love triangle BS. Too much was going on elsewhere to care
I think just as Katniss in the end when she realizes what it means she'll choose "what she needs to survive" comment. Gale is the fire and anger. Peeta is the hope and optimism....the dandelion in spring that promises life can be good again. They are kinda like metaphors.
@@lynmoore_ I also think the movies focus way too much on the "love triangle". it's there in the book in a way yes, but several times throughout katniss "talks" about how now is not the time. she doesn't have time for a boyfriend she has to feed her family, she has to survive the arena, she has to kill snow. I don’t know I got triggered by so much of gales behaviour. he always ignored her feelings and pushed her to believe she has feelings for him because he otherwise would leave her even tho he was such an important friend in her life so she had no other choice than to give in his needs. he made it hard for peeta to be around even threw gloves away that could have belonged to peeta. he was fine with killing innocent people that just were on the wrong side. he was so toxic and manipulative i wished he just would have had an older protective brother role filling out the male spot in katniss life after the death of her father instead of the third wheel shit
Apparently I heard that Suzanne Collins didn’t want to have a love triangle but the publishers or someone said it would sell better and they’d only sell other if she had 3 love interests so it was always actually peeta and gale was meant to be her friend
josh hutcherson acted his ass out in this, you could practically taste the hatred. i was genuinely so scared peeta was unsavable and that they'd have to put him out like a rabid dog at some point
People die in the rebellion scenes on purpose. They knew they would get shot. The point is that rebelling against fascist dictatorships costs putting your life on the line. They had no other way. That’s what makes these scenes so powerful. They’re not idiots. They’re singing a death march- they know what’s coming. But the results of their actions matter more to them than their own individual lives. It’s bone chilling and powerful and that’s what makes them the best scenes in the entire franchise (to me!!! for me!!!). It doesn’t matter that they don’t all make it up the trees. It just matters that some bodies are in the way, between the soldiers and those who do get up into the trees, so they can set off the land mines. It doesn’t matter that they don’t all make it to the dam. It just matters that a select few do so they can get the bombs into the dam and set them off. They know that the ones who didn’t get shot will die when the dam breaks, too. But breaking the dam is more important to them than their own individual lives. They wouldn’t have been able to accomplish the action without all of those people agreeing to it. They don’t have the technology or the infrastructure. It’s literally grassroots fucking anarchist action bitches!!!!! And it rocks!!!!!
I really feel like you are inherently misunderstanding what rebellions actually are. Especially in a dystopian world such as the Hunger Games. The fact that there is no reason or room for hope, yet the rebellion still has it, IS the point. It’s why the rebels in the districts completely disregard their own lives in pursuit of a common cause. It’s why the hundreds of rebels ran into A DAM to try and blow it up, knowing all of them would die, either by the peacekeepers or the water being released. Their cause was worth the risk. They had no other option, except to try and do their part in making a better world for the future. It’s so reductive of a conclusion to be like “that was dumb, there must have been a better way” THERE WAS NO BETTER WAY, that’s the point. They have no weapons, no means to rebel, and basically no central communication, but they still hurt their totalitarian regime, with “pickaxes and knives”. hope was the only thing that mattered, and it shows. at least it should. Look at the rebels in WW2, or the underground railroad, or any major conflict in history. People are willing to do what’s right, even if there is no hope of it working, no hope of change, just because their morals are strong. it’s a strength of humanity, to never give up, and even the capital and all their control and dehumanizing the districts could not break that strength. I hope a thorough review of the series would be enough for you to reconsider those words and conclusions you drew
He’s a very intelligent person who is also somehow incredibly insulated from the way the world works. So much of his reality seems to come from other books and other movies, and not at all from history or from other places around the world. It’s kind of fascinating to watch. I’m not sure if this is the usual thing for people from Canada and the US or he’s an anomaly, but I think I’ve seen this pov before with people from those places.

Its great writing on Collins' part that Gale's utter lack of remorse when Katniss confronts him about Prim and the bombing and hus only response being annoyance that what he thought was his ONE way to Katniss' heart(protecting her family/aka the highest priority of our main character that starts the whole plot) is gone in such a utilitarian mentality is chilling but not completely unexpected. Collins has been tempering us preparing us for it throughout the book with little trinkets of Gale's behaviour. There are so many masterful things in this book blowing my mind.
I've read the series so many times, and even though I always know it's coming, I still can't stop myself from crying when I get to that scene. The movie does it really well.

About Gale - the criticism comes from his character being pretty callous about violence in general. Even in the end the reason he regrets the bomb isnt because it killed a lot of people but that it killed someone he cared about. If his side never went to the aid of the Capitol and his side didn’t suffer casualties from his bomb then he would have no regrets, just like with The Nut. Throughout the 3 books we see Katniss develop a sense of empathy for those that are different from her (her mother, those better off in district 12, district 1+2 people, district 13, the Capitol) and that is Peeta’s influence on her, to see beyond her own circumstances. Which is where Gale and Katniss really differ. Gale has a victim mentality and he lashes out. Those who didn’t suffer in the exact way he suffered don’t deserve his empathy. Which is why his conscience is not affected when he entombs those in The Nut and can justify killing innocent Capitol children. He has done some heroic and lifesaving acts, but can’t climb out of his own circumstances and instead chooses to inflict more suffering and is callous about it.
I mean it’s ok for you to like Gale… but to say Katniss did not love Peeta at this point when Finnick says it, it’s like you did not read the books , and you did 😅 she did love Peeta. She was just a teenager with too many things to worry about so she wouldn’t admit to herself.
@@jopiter8 also it’s super important to realize that katniss is an extremely unreliable narrator. like we can see the feelings she has for peeta shown in the actions she takes and how she thinks about him, but at the end of the day she’s a traumatized teenager with no concept of healthy romantic feelings. it’s why it makes sense to see the conflict from her eyes instead of how other dystopian series decide to make a teenager the most important character for no reason, it makes sense to see the impact of such a society on katniss.
The dam scene was just a full suicide mission. It ended with them bombing the exact location they were standing. I don’t think they were concerned about the guns there.
I heavily disagree that you think she doesn’t love Peeta in Mockingjay. When Peeta died in the arena she realised what he meant to her and from then on everything she did was for him, to protect him, to save him. She was violently angry when he wasn’t saved. She loves him deeply she’s just not outward with her emotions. I also think the movie chose to not make Peeta look too fucked up and restrained on TV because they’re still using him for propaganda, they have to convince the Capitol he’s there willingly.
It's also because you forget how beefy Peeta's face actually is normally. They had to edit him to look that skinny and sunken in even in the second video. Sure, for a wiry guy that would look normal, but for Peeta that's definitely malnourished.

honestly i first discovered this guy through his reading the hunger games series, his takes regarding Peeta/Gale, Katniss and her being an unreliable narrator, and in this video his complete misunderstanding of the rebellion scenes at the dam and tree farm all contributed to me deciding i’ll probably never watch more of his videos. like these things are so easy to understand for literal teenagers why would i want to hear the book/movie takes of someone with no media literacy? like it’s not even me just disagreeing with his takes he is literally objectively wrong about these things lol

regarding the scenes of the people rebelling i think its important to remember they dont have guns or access to weaponry in any meaningful way but theyve decided that their freedom is worth dying for as long as they make some kind of difference, like the bombing of the dam in 4 they knew they were gonna get gunned down and they were more than ready for it because they knew it was more important to cut of the capitols power so they were more than willing to die for the cause

To me he will always be the Prim-reaper😅 What really bothers me and was my final straw was that when he knew that Peeta had been tortured and he met up with Katniss he said something selfish which implies that he no longer thinks of Peeta as competition for Katniss’ love after Peeta attacked her and to me that speaks volumes about that he was more glad that he could “get with” Katniss rather than be angry at the Capitol about what they did to Peeta. Also he reminds me a lot of young Snow….
I find it interesting how Gale is a very classic romantic interest in personality, actions and even looks. We've been told time and time again by the literature, films, tv shows, and society in general that this is the type of masculinity we should be attracted to. And yet most female fans myself included are not rooting for him (or him and Katniss together). At the same time some male viewers explain and justify his behaviour with Katniss, even sympathise with him while actively calling Peeta weak or boring. It's just fascinating how negatively Peeta's type of masculinity is perceived by some men when it's the exact same qualities we find so attractive and desirable. It's equally sad that these are the qualities that are traditionally attributed to women. The author switching these stereotypical characteristics between Katniss and Peeta exposed so much about how deeply ingrained our gender prejudices are. I'm also in minority who thinks the love triangle here isn't just a pointless trope. I do hate the marketing aspect of it (and fully blame Twilight for it) but the way it's written is a bit more symbolic than juvenile team X or team Y. The boys evolve and change mirroring Katniss' self perception and state of mind. It's why they're both idolised and vilified at one point or another. And it's also why she grows into her choice of Peeta. Because growing up means letting go of your destructive anger (Gale) and seeking inner peace (Peeta).

It almost feels brushed off too, girls especially can tell stuff with Gale and explain it but sometimes when guys say stuff to defend it it can come off as condescending at times when they don’t mean it, like we don’t know what we’re talking about and are only focusing on the ‘love’ ‘romance’ aspect as if we aren’t smart enough to see how Gales character is written and how he isn’t great with Katniss with how he treats her.

The romance is still part of the story and it’s important as well and brushing it off doesn’t make the plot better when it’s there for a reason and doesn’t weaken it.
One thing Snow was so right about was that hope will always overpower fear, hence why people from district 7 and district 4 made such rash decisions, because their hope of a better Panem and a better life made them less fearful and this is definitely something that people in war-torn countries can relate to.

Yes exactly. Mockingjay was actually the shortest book, if anything they should've split Catching Fire bc it's the longest (and most interesting IMO). But YA book finale movies are always split in 2 since HP bc moneyyyyy 🙄
Katniss loved Peeta from the first book. She never had a crush on him, imo, but she did begin to love him during the events of the first book. And she cared for him before that, not just from when he helped her. But from what she learned while watching him after he helped her.
I'm a little confused because you keep asking why they are rebelling the way they are because they are just getting shot, but the whole point is they don't have weapons to fight the peacekeepers in that way, so their tactics are literally that they know they have to sacrifice people to get to the point. That's why it's so hard to rebel. District 7 with the trees, yes people got shot because they were doing it for the long game. And they climbed the trees to then bomb all of the peacekeepers on the ground. The dam is the biggest representation. They know they're going to get shot, but they had to plant those bombs to destroy the dam. Also I'm not trying to have an attitude or angry or anything, I'm just a bit confused as to how you are dismissing that what they are doing as dumb.
Because it is dumb. Just because they do something one way, doesn't mean there isn't a smarter way to do it. They DECIDED to climb trees and bomb them. That doesn't inherently make it a good plan, especially considering they lost more than 50% of their crew in doing so
I don’t think they have the axes and pick axes when they’re walking in the forest with the peacekeepers. I think the first scene you see of them is showing what that district does but implied that as they leave work they turn in the equipment. So by the time you see them in the forest they are weaponless.
Throughout this series, it's wild to see how dismissive your thoughts are on the acts of rebellion that stem from desperation and the fight for freedom. These districts do not have the stealth and nuclear power of 13. I think you mentioned previously that the setup of the districts and even the Games themselves was made to keep the poor as poor as possible. They never had hope for a different future before because at every turn, the Capitol has them on a leash. But this series shows the spark, the burn, and the evolution of a revolution. And to simply dismiss that driving force behind their rebellion, especially in this political climate, shows your interest in the characters, in the setting of the series, but not in the dystopian message of oppression and the unfettered hope which resonate in so many people of color whose mere existence is threatened by these forces to this day. To focus more on the "Gale hate" and the inaccurate portrayal of Peeta's propos and other differences between the book and the movie rather than the resounding efforts from across all of Panem is truly the epitome of the male gaze. It seems you've completely lost the point. Resistance, in all its forms of stubbornness, futility, and desperation, has always been and will always be power.
watching your journey inspired me to re-read the series. I was never a Gale hater, but I have to admit that his cold attitude towards loss of civilian life hits a lot different now after watching everything unfold over the last 9 months in Gaza than it did when I first read the series 14 years ago.

I actually loved the addition of the forest and dam scenes! Both districts definitely knew a lot of their people would die, but it was the only way to show extreme dissent and/or damage the Capitol's access to resources.
I feel like the dislike for songs in books is because too many authors without a sense of rhythm and meter think they can write song lyrics and it's all fine as long as the last syllable rhymes. Like the sorting hat. It feels like listening to a person sing confidently without hitting a single note. I've never cringed at well written song lyrics in a book though.
Yeah, song lyrics in books are just poetry. Poetry can be wonderful. But too many people think using a basic rhyme scheme and hitting the enter key a lot makes them a great poet.
I completely disagree that Katniss doesn’t love him. I think Finnick hits on the head when he specifies he doesn’t know what way, but to look at the sacrifices she made and was willingly to make just for the chance to keep him alive in CF and MJ and NOT think that’s love? Wild to me
I feel like Katniss also doesn’t know, and has never been given the chance to actually learn, the differences between romantic and platonic love. There was pressure from other people around her, with both Peeta and Gale, to make it romantic-it was just that the pressure with Peeta was from/after the Games, and the pressure from her district/social circle with Gale predated that and may even have felt safe/something to hold onto after so much trauma. It’s so valid that she doesn’t know how she feels, not only because she’s 17, but because of how deeply traumatized she is and the pressures of heteronormativity/amatonormativity. On a more symbolic level, the romance hinge (it ain’t actually a triangle??) I think represents Katniss going back and forth between Peeta’s, and her own, “goodness” and refusal to dehumanize people, and Gale’s, and her own, capacity to dehumanize others entirely. Peeta “winning” makes sense to me on this level, though I’d argue her feelings for both of them were likely mainly deep platonic love, especially because trauma to that level can make it hard to even be open to the possibility of anything else authentically.
The issue with Gale-for me-is that everything he does has selfish intent. He is so hurt over her kissing Peeta in the games even though she did it to save herself. He won’t leave District 12 before the quarter quell because she would want Peeta to go. He knows the games that the Capitol plays yet he sees Peeta as a pawn for playing along yet he’s played along his whole 18 years. He’s never had to fight in the games yet looks down on choices made by Peeta he couldn’t possibly understand himself. He only went to save Peeta because he knew he’d never have a chance with her if he didn’t. He’s a man-child always throwing a victim tantrum & it bothers me. He fights for Katniss’ attention in all the dirty ways. Peeta never tries to get her attention, he’s never selfish, he literally wants to die so she can be with Gale & Prim & her mom. He fights so hard to protect her when he himself is unprotected. It baffles me you fight so hard for a purely selfish character. “I want Katniss.” When Peeta is always thinking, save people, save Katniss, make this a better world. Gale is so blind to his need that he sacrifices people at the Nut, her sister. Yes he doesn’t kill her directly but he sparked the flame due to his ignorance and blindness of wanting to be important, be a soldier that creates something, but he’s just a man wanting a woman who can’t see beyond that. (And yes, I’ve read & reread the books 20+ times, I’ve watched & rewatched the movies 20+ times, this series is my soul series & I disliked Gale the moment Prim was killed the first time I read Mockingjay back in 2012).
Look gales not awful but its the jealousy and how hes so dismissive of both peeta and katniss’s trauma. Constantly making negative comments about how katniss played the romance game but like she did it TO SURVIVE and like ya peeta was hurt and angry too but he realized why she did that and apologized, gale carried resentment. He also always comments how killing is easy and their lives dont matter but he doesn’t know what its like even if it is a capitol life and just completely dismisses what Katniss went through in the games and how hard it was to kill and deal with the aftermath.
Gale just makes me sad. He's such a product of his environment and I definitely see why and how he is the way that he is. But just thinking about if I knew him in real life, yeah, no. I can have empathy but I'd stay clear from him because we'd never see eye to eye. And that's the tragedy of him, I think.
1) I prefer Peeta than Gale mostly because I think he's selfless where Gale is more selfish (especially towards Katniss - I hate that he's angry at her for what happened in the arena) but he's a good soldier and I don't blame him for Prim's death; 2) I don't think your criticism was genuine but I always saw the rebelious acts as brave. I said this in the book video as well but I don't dislike Gale for the bombs. That was Coin, not Gale. And anyone who says differently is honestly just wrong. What I can't get over however is how Gale treats katniss while also saying he loves her. But, the man is 18 years old so I give him some slack for that. He's a good guy overall, cares for his and her family, want to win the war and is a good soldier. But he is manipulative throughout the whole series toward Katniss and keep pestering her about a relationship she does not really have time for and never showed any interest in wanting. And it just got worse throughout. The fact that he treats Katniss so coldly at the beginning of CF because she kissed peeta and played perfect girlfriend in the arena when that was to keep her alive, and even if it wasn't, even if she did love peeta at that point, it just is not okay to be such a dick because the girl you like doesn't like you back. But again, he's 18, he's still a kid. When he's all in for escaping District 12, until he finds out she wants Peeta and Haymitch to come with too. She does it to save the people she cares about, he will only do it so he can have katniss for himself?? I get that they are at war but willing to kill innocent people in district 3 (I think?? the nut anyway) is uncool, even if it is something Snow would do. I wouldn't want to sink to Snow's level. Making the death of her sister about himself. "That was the one thing I had going for me. Taking care of your family." To me this is disgusting, even for an 18 year old. These are the big things for me, but there are other smaller details. But I also mentioned in the last video that I would've rather she didn't end up with either Peeta or Gale, that wasn't the point of the story.
The bombs are still his fault though because it was his idea. Sure Coin changed it from being Capitol first responders to District 13’s but he still wanted to bomb civilians and medics, he just intended both groups to be from his enemy so it would have been “fine.” But since it killed Prim, someone he knew, and loved from 12 then he regrets it. Wanting to bomb innocent people from the Capitol is STILL wrong.
I think the point of them (the people in the districts) run towards or from the guns is the best thing because there's no way they could actually confront the soldiers and thats the crude part of it that they are willing to die and do it and die regardless because they dont have nothing else to lose anymore
As someone who saw the movies first you are so right about Finnick's big reveal. I missed it completely. It was a throw away scene and im sad about it. My brother pointed it to me basically because he had read them first. They should have kept more scenes with him because in the book he and katniss become close.

I remember I liked Gale more than Peeta at first (I did like Katniss ending together with Peeta tho, also now that I understand his manipulative and pushy behavior I prefer Peeta 100% for sure) and I was very in conflict with the war discussion in the book, but well I was a 13-15 y.o. without any understanding about politics and little knowledge about war. I agree that Gale isn't a bad man and I can understand why he was so intense about going to war against the capitol (I don't mean I excuse his decisions, those were war crimes), but he isn't a good option as a romantic partner (at least, right now).
Imagine having to wait a full year to see the next part, while knowing the ending would still leave me as broken as this movie... actually it was good that I had to wait a year, so I forgot how broken I was XD

I could not stop laughing when you got mesmerized by the brick and veneer of the run down building . You thinking of remodeling only to end with “I’m so old” so freaken relatable…..
I remember watching these movies and thinking donald Sutherland was a great actor not because of how well he plays wickedly evil (that part is honestly a bit scary) but more because without even one scene to make me have empathy for him, i still did
You can see Peeta look progressively worse but still, when you get to see him at last, that broke me. Josh Hutcherson had been my childhood crush since Journey to the center of the earth and Bridge to Terabitia and I absolutely adored Peeta as a character due to his kindness and a certain softness Hutcherson brings to the character. To then see this terrible state, this violent behaviour towards someone he loved, it just tore my heart out of my chest. But I am mad impressed with the movie for evoking such motions - in general, the Hunger Games movies are one of the absolute best books adaptations ever.
See, Gale isn't a bad person per say, he does everything in his power to protect Katniss and her family, but I believe the author wanted to show people the kind of choices a person has to make when there's a war. Gale is one of those where he would do anything to win the war, including taking innocent lives, and that's what makes him a shitty person. There's a difference between people wanting to sacrifice themselves for the sake of a better future, and being straight up killed by Coin who was their leader. Regardless of Prim being the consequence of that decision, he chose to take Coin's side, who isn't any different to Snow. However, I do hope that the author didn't purposefully put Gale in this situation to tear apart the love triangle and give Katniss an easy choice to make because that's just stupid. I still believe he deserves the hate he got because in any circumstance, killing innocent children isn't acceptable!
0:57 In my opinion it was definitely the best decision to split this movie in two parts, even though the director said he regrets it now. It’s what should’ve been done for The Ballad of Songbirds and snakes too, they tried to condense it all into a 3h long single movie but I feel like a lot of things didn’t have the time to be shown properly.
There's a lot of differences but there are only a few instances where the movie is more vivid...but YES to that scene. Hurt WAY worse watching it than reading it.
I was just thinking "wow this looks like a Dylan video" when you put the circle camera on Julianne Moore's face, and then you proceed to mention Dylan hahahaha
I like the inclusion of Effie in the first movie because Suzanne Collins have said that writing the third book was so draining that she totally forgot about Effie and she just pops up at the end cause her husband reminds her about it. Every interaction she has in both movies are what Suzanne forgot to include in the books
