Storyline
Born on the original Christmas in the stable next door to Jesus Christ, Brian of Nazareth spends his life being mistaken for a messiah.
The story of Brian of Nazareth (Graham Chapman), born on the same day as Jesus of Nazareth, who takes a different path in life that leads to the same conclusion. Brian joins a political resistance movement aiming to get the Romans out of Judea. Brian scores a victory of sorts when he manages to paint political slogans on an entire wall in the city of Jerusalem. The movement is not very effective but somehow Brian becomes a prophet and gathers his own following. His fate is sealed however and he lives a very short life.

We should really be thanking George Harrison for this film. Originally, EMI were going to finance the film, but then they pulled out literally days before they were about to go out to Tunisia to start production. When George heard about this (He had been friends with the Pythons since meeting them at the premier of ‘Holy Grail’), he told them that he would get the money for them and being a Beatle, he got it. £4 million was how much the film cost and George put everything he had into it, even his house and when he was asked why he did it, his response was simply, ‘I just wanted to see the film’.

The Pythons did not realize that George had put up his house to raise the money until later. They just assumed he was swimming in cash, but that wasn't necessarily the case. They wondered if they would have allowed him to risk his assets like that if they had known the truth of it - certainly the thought of George losing all their cash so they could make their movie made them uncomfortable. It all turned out okay in the end but there was no guarantee that it would - all the publicity surrounding the controversy and the fact that the film was banned in several places might easily have backfired and buried the movie. But it didn't.

@@karlmortoniv2951 Yup in fact If I remember (forgive my lack of knowledge of british 70’s tv) but Eric and Michael ended up defending the movie on a British talk show against some Anglican bishop that was promoting a boycott. The story I remember hearing was that at a big press event for "Holy Grail" the guys were asked what they were going to do next and without thinking about it or consulting the guys, Eric Idle said that their next film was going to be "Jesus Christ: Lust for Glory" and the idea sort of mutated from there.

@@RyanCarrington - Yes !! The making of Life Of Brian is absolutely worth watching. That christian lady raising 'hell' to ban the movie. Especially at the end, with the discussion with the bishop and that born-again guy that both pontificate on a TV talk-show with John Cleese and Michael Palin countering their 'arguments'. Yes! Another "Brian Over Grail" guy! I knew you would be! HA! All the Python guys would agree with you, by the way (and me too!). There are a million reasons why. One reason is WAY more MIchael F**kin' Palin. He plays Pilate, he plays the chained-up guy in the dungeon, he plays the ex-leper, he plays the Crucifixion Organizer, he plays one of the prophets, one of the gang. Picking a favorite Python is like picking a favorite Beatle, they're ALL essential and all brilliant, but Palin I definitely have a soft spot for. (He also is part of my favorite writing team in Python: Palin and Jones. ) That said, as soon as I single out Palin, I feel GUILTY because I could talk forever about how brilliant all the other guys are! Great reaction, and I’m glad you pointed out the look of the movie, Ryan! Terry Gilliam was in charge of that aspect, and like with Holy Grail, he was able to give the film a look that far exceeded its budget! Funnily enough, they filmed in Tunisia and used many sets that had been built for the TV miniseries, Jesus of Nazareth, which had been filmed there not too long before (they were also close to where several of the Tatooine scenes had been filmed for Star Wars)! Originally, the Python boys had intended the story to be much more of a direct pisstake of Jesus (my favourite of their early ideas was the Jesus was really just a bad carpenter that kept accidentally hammering nails through his hands!), but upon re-familiarising themselves with his story and teachings, they found that most of what he said was pretty sound from a moral standpoint, so there was little to satirise. Instead, they chose to make it a broader satire of organised religion as a whole… but really, they might as well have stuck with taking the mickey out of Jesus, as the people who campaigned against the film hadn’t actually seen the film and just assumed that was what it was doing anyway! It was also satirising the general political climate in and around London in the 70s, when there were many radical political movements active. They were largely left-wing radicals, seeking a drastic change in the socio-economic structure of the country, but they spent most of their time arguing amongst themselves about minutiae of doctrine and hating each other more than the actual establishment that they were never going to get anything done! That Jerusalem at the time of Jesus was in a very similar state played very well with this angle. None of this explains just what’s so funny about Biggus Dickus, though… 🤔

10:53 Ironically, the fade to black was forced by final-stage editing decisions! Pilate's wife was originally in the script and "her" scenes were all filmed. The role was played by the tall, tough-looking mug who also played Burt (the Beard Haggler's muscle) so Pilate's wife is an absolute nightmare who demolishes her kidnappers. When Brian turns to face the centurions, Mrs. P appears behind him and knocks him out with a single conk to the noggin. But the Python lads decided to cut her scenes out completely, adding the abrupt fade to black covering her up. The rejected version is presented on the Blu-ray along with additional deleted scenes of Otto and his "crack suicide squad;" Otto was almost removed entirely as well. If you look closely at the symbol on his headgear, you will see that it's a combination of the Star of David and the Nazi swastika, and in his cut scenes Otto is not subtle at all about the connection; perhaps the lads decided that they were already going to be in enough trouble over the rest of the movie. I've got nothing to back it up, but I think the only reason Otto and his squad even appear in the end was because they couldn't redo the shots of other characters standing over their bodies. Deleted scenes: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-wthHB3iTC7M.html The deleted scene with the oblivious shepherds appears in the _Life of Brian_ scriptbook in comic book form, drawn by the legendary Neal Adams! The scriptbook (or scrapbook) can still be found used/cheap, so maybe grab a copy if you want? It also includes the aforementioned scenes.

After the Python, Terry Gilliam went to Hollywood to became a Director and today he is more famous from his (great) movies than for his participation in the Monty Python crew. I'm not sure what the actual thought behind the spaceship was, but I personally always took it as a nod to the fact that stories of many prophets contain being taken up by gods to the heavens to see the land below, which in modern times is often interpreted as the possibility that aliens took said prophets for a ride. Also, many descriptions of gods descending to earth from heavens (including the jewish/christian god), read in a modern context, fit surprisingly well as descriptions of space ships ascending/descending. Literally, look up SpaceX booster landing, and read along with the passages where god descends from heavens during tunderous roar, parting the clouds, surrounded by smoke and flames.

The spaceship is a reference to a book from the late sixties called Chariots of The Gods which postulates that technology on earth originated from alien visitors... no seriously. (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chariots_of_the_Gods%3F)

You picked up on the reason for the spaceship: It was a jokey nod to the huge popularity of "Star Wars"-like films that were coming out at the end of the seventies when this film was being made: "Star Wars" and "Close Encounters of the Third Kind" in 1977, the "Battlestar Galactica" TV series in 1978, advance hype for a "Flash Gordon" movie slated to come out in 1980, etc.

They were also riffing off alien abductions, which were becoming a thing at the time, as well as the idea that Jesus might have been an alien. A documentary called "Chariots of the Gods" made a lot of noise in the early '70s by suggesting that the pyramids and a lot of other impressive ancient stuff was built by aliens.

Does anybody actually dislike "Meaning of Life"? My only issue with it is that it seems like a step backward to the sketch comedy vibe of their TV show. They had advanced so far and done so well integrating their brand of comedy into a cinematic narrative that the clumsiness of "Meaning of Life" disappointed me a bit. There's still some great stuff in it, though, as well as some of their most immortally funny material.

Watch the interview on "Friday Night, Saturday Morning", with Malcom Muggeridge and the Bishop of Southwark. It is in full on YT under Life of Brian - 1979 debate part 1/4 to part 4/4. BBC did a documentary about the interview's background (though I forget the name of it - it is also findable on YT), and there is a Not The Nine O'clock Newa skit lambasting the dishonest religious apologists - with their complaints that the new film The Life of Christ was mocking our lord and saviour JC (John Cleese). The film was banned in various towns by busy-body idiots writing to their town councils and having their local cinema prohibited from showing it. Sue Jones Davies (Judith) went on to become Lady Mayoress of her welsh community and one of her first actions was to have the ban overturned.

This movies was almost banned in the UK and the church did object quite harshly and there is a video of John Cleese and another Monty Python member debating the church representatives on a BBC broadcast about this movie. The transgenderism in this movie about Stan wanting to have babies was so far ahead of it's time it stuns me to this day. I still prefer The Holy Grail for it's randomness and jokes.

BEST INTRO EVER!!! I'm three seconds in and I already had to stop and comment! Laughed my ass off! Ok, going to watch it for real now. As far as favorite quote? Damn, there are so many! There is one line that I love, it's not a famous one, necessarily. Early on, when Palin plays the "ex-leper" whom Jesus had healed, but was now out of a vocation (as a beggar!).....Brian says "There's no pleasing some people." and the ex-Leper replies: "That's just what Jesus said!" and hops away. That's the movie in a nutshell, right? I also like when they're walking away from the Sermon on the Mount and John Cleese says "What Jesus fails to realize is that the meek are part of the problem!" LOL. So funny. This movie got grilled for being blasphemous.....meanwhile it's making fun of the dopey followers!
