Yes you are correct. IU was mute. Many people think or say she was deaf, primarily because they notice her using sign language at the table. And most immediately take that to mean she is deaf. But IU went out of her way to try and show she is mute and not deaf in the video, because as all IU fans know she is dealing with a condition with her left ear where the tube from the inner ear to the throat can remain open, causing pain and when that happens she can't hear herself sing. She didn't want to recreate any rumors that she was in fact going deaf. So there are several things they did in the MV to try and make that point. 1st she has a lip ring which is to symbolize difficulty with verable communication. It is not there in any of the fantasy scenes. 2nd she hears and reacts first to the sound of the cube everytime. When they stop to catch their breath, inside when it passes overhead, actually they both exact that the same time, and at the wedding scence. In that same wedding scene IU is holding a microphone once again showing that in the fantasy world she has her voice which also indicates that her inability to speak is not from birth but more recent. She is an absolute angel and she is the most successful kpop singer in Korea. Her MV'sxhave been viewed over 1.6 billion times. She has over 32 #1 hits, more than twice any other group or artist.. She debuted in 2008 at the age of 15. And Rolling Stone Magazine added her to their list of the 200 Greatest Singer of All Time.
