Actually the english dub censured lots of dialogues. In the bath scene goku tells bulma he is 14 years old but only because he cant do math. Thats why bulma throw everything after him :D

There’s only a 3-4 year age gap, in the manga the reason Burma threw him out of the bathroom is because they were close in age and she thought he was being a pervert

In regards to Bulma's lines hinting at Goku's intergalactic origins, I believe the English dub for Dragonball was done * after * Dragonball Z's English dub, so the dubbing company already knew Goku was an alien, and mentioned it as a little in-joke. I dont recall any such dialogue existing in the Dragonball Manga.

Early early Dragon Ball is particularly goofy and kiddish. It gets more serious with more fighting Dynocap is just another name for capsules. Also Hoi-poi capsules Bulma’s “Not from earth” line is original to the funimation dub. Toriyama came up with the concept during the King Piccolo saga

In my opinion Goku had more personality as a kid, which is why I prefer kid goku then adult goku. And, yes, kid goku is freaking adorable-attitude wise and visually. But you’ll also get to see how his physical appearance begins to change with his training.

13:30-13:47 The Dragon Ball dub, like Z's dub, often adds lines that weren't in the original manga or in the Japanese airing of the anime, probably because the script writers for the dub wanted to allude to elements from Dragon Ball Z. VIZ media's translation of the Dragon Ball manga also does this with the English translation of chapter 39, where the narrator ends the chapter with "Is this the end of Son Goku? Then how do you explain Dragon Ball Z?" (For clarification, VIZ's translation of the manga splits it into two halves to match the two anime adaptations, labeling volumes 1-16 as "Dragon Ball" and volumes 17-42 as "Dragon Ball Z"). Bulma's original reaction in the manga and the Japanese version was basically "If you are going to ask questions, at least stay awake to hear the answers". In chapter 23 of the manga, Oolong does make a remark to the group asking "So what IS he...some kinda space alien?", but I doubt Toriyama knew he was going to have Goku as an alien from the start since he usually writes as the story goes along and because the first arc of Dragon Ball was written to be, for the most part, a straight forward Journey to the West parody.

Here in Latin America, Dragon Ball is considered the most popular anime in history, and Goku is the most beloved anime character of all time. Btw just a small tiny little easter egg, but when Goku changed the channel, it was Godzilla Vs. King Kong. one of the very early toku films in japan depicting the two giant popular monsters.

So, just to clarify everyone's ages, Goku starts out at 12 years old (he says he's 14 at one point, but that's because he thinks that 14 comes after 11 until Master Roshi teaches him how to count properly), and Bulma is 16. Doesn't make the scene where Bulma tried to seduce Goku that much better, but at least he wasn't like an 8 year old.

13:30 - 14:48 - 17:10 Most of those dialogues and weird jokes are from the dub so don't pay much attention to what they may imply. The original is much weirder, if I remember correctly Goku keeps bothering Bulma about her not having a peepee saying stuff like "did your parents abandoned you cause you don't have it" lol

This is an episode with a lot of spicy dialogue and double meanings. Toriyama was doing that comedy mixed with adventure at the beginning. It was very funny. But the dubbing is heavily censored. Summary: -Goku says he's 14 (actually 12), Bulma 16. Bulma gets mad at him because he's a teenager and doesn't want perversions from him. That's why she makes him sleep in separate beds. -Goku (in his innocence) wants to help shower Bulma. Goku asks her why she has an ass in front of her. Bulma tells him that they are female breasts. -Goku says that all men have tails. Bulma thinks that since she hasn't had relationships with boys it really is like that. -Then Goku rectifies and says that his grandfather had no tail. Bulma says that he's the weird one, and that's why his parents abandoned him. Goku laughs at Bulma and says that she was abandoned for having that weird ass in front of her (breasts). -Goku explains to Bulma that when he slept with his grandfather he let him rest his head on his groins because he acted as a pillow, the same thing he proposes to a Bulma, who flatly refuses. -Goku in the morning tries to try sleeping on top of Bulma and sees that something strange happens (there are no balls! XD). Finally, no, there is no concept of aliens, saiyans, superpowers, transformations. That came later. Dragon Ball was an adventure comedy. Goku was a hermit boy from the mountain.

FYI: In the Chinese novel "Journey to the West" written in the 16th century some of the characters were Monkey King (Japanese translation Son Goku or Chinese "Sun Wukong") who had a pole called Ruyi Jingu Bang that extended and traveled cloud called Nimbus. He had some companions Zhu Bajie a pig who could transform. Sounds familiar??? This is what Dragon ball was taken from not a Saiyan but a mischievous monkey.

Goku is lucky Vegeta never found out about this.

Funfact, I knew about the middle of dragon ball z first, then I was introduced to dragon ball, then I rewatched Z, then I saw GT, then I saw the movies and THEN i saw dbs. I love them all despite their flaws and inconsistencies, a true dragon ball fan will give EVERY series a change no matter how ridiculous it looks.

If you haven't gotten to it yet, Goku is 12 and Bulma is 16. Goku might actually be in the 14-15 range if you take some of the newer material into consideration.

Honestly, there were a few hints in the Anime- but I'm not sure how they line up with the Manga in terms of IRL timelines. (One time when Kid Goku is being "scanned", the word "Alien" appears, for example)

It's weird rewatching this with the knowledge that Bulma was such a prodigy, she was teaching classes at this age (she's on summer break). Imagine being in high school and having this version of Bulma as your teacher!

In Dragon ball Goku was originally a strong kid with a tail and then in Dragon ball z it turns out he is an alien.

I mean, some things I'm not sure if were part of the original script or made up. They probably had to spin some jokes around so they fit better both the mouth flaps and the audience. Like when they said the thing about "Goku coming from another planet", that might have been a silly joke from Toriyama or maybe from the translation group. Maybe someone that knows the original script can respond something like that. Either way, it is indeed a funny coincidence.

"I thought Toriyama didn't know about what he was going to do later on." He didn't. Them saying things about him being an alien and stuff are just guesses back before the Saiyans were made up. They just happened to line up with what was made up later on (there are times where they just wonder about what Goku is is all instead of it being specifically alien stuff (that and the dub adds in more things that aren't in the original script)).

"Gohan never had one" ...yeah he did. It was a major plot point.

I remember growing up, i first watcjed DB in spanish. After rewatching the show many times i can say that the dialogue is around 15% different

I'm sure that Gohan did his best to describe electricity and TV and cars and girls ect ect, but being RAISED without that stuff and only hearing about it, is different than the first time you see it in action. love this series, the world really is brand new in the eyes of Goku. Also, Goku is just one of those guys that the second you take your eyes off them, they get naked for some reason. lol

I feel like most of the personality of goku here is totally different when you watch the dubbed. In one he's just a innocent and pure kid living in the mountains who makes light jokes and in english for some reason they made it edgy making jokes and being sarcastic all the time

Gohan had a tail multiple times. They kept cutting it off until it wouldn't Grow back. Raddiz grab it at the beginning of Z. He turned Oozaru fighting Vegeta the first time cause his tail grew back. He also had one in the tree of might when they fought Turles.

"Dino caps" this is what you get when you watch a 30 year old dub. They changed a bunch of stuff to try to make it more appealing to westerners. In fact dubs still do this but not as badly as they used to. They're called Hoipoi capsules originally. The dub also censors some things if I'm not mistaken. Also the dub takes a lot of liberties with jokes like when Bulma says "I don't know what planet this kid's from." I don't think that was the original dialogue and even if it was, Toriyama didn't plan that far ahead so it's just an expression. But even so, Dragon Ball was first dubbed in like 1995; the manga ended in 1995 so the story had already been around a long time and one could argue the translators were aware of where the story goes.
