OldBoy Movie Description:
Dae-Su is an obnoxious drunk bailed from the police station yet again by a friend. However, he's abducted from the street and wakes up in a cell, where he remains for the next 15 years, drugged unconscious when human contact is unavoidable, otherwise with only the television as company. And then, suddenly released, he is invited to track down his jailor with a denouement that is simply stunning.

I saw the devil is another masterpiece. So effed up. Watched it at TIFF and the director, Kim Jee-woon, was there. He talked ahead of the movie saying when he submitted the film for a rating to the Korean film board they sent it back saying he must edit due to indignities against humanity. We cheered because he brought his edit. :)

The lead is played by Choi Min-sik, one of the greatest actors not only of his country but of the world. He's like Daniel Day-Lewis, great in everything he's in no exceptions. He's also great as the diabolical villain serial killer in I Saw the Devil, one of the greatest revenge movies ever right next to Oldboy. It also has a great twist at the end, Koreans are pretty good at it. In my opinion Choi Min-sik performance in this movie is on the same intensity as Robert DeNiro in Cape Fear.

There is a bit more of heart break detail that hard to catch for non Korean speakers. Dae-su speaks in a weird way like a robot or something after he got released. Because he forgot how to talk normally while in the jail for 15 years. And there is the exact moment he went back to Dae-su himself, that's 23:17. At that scene, he started talk like a dad trying to reassure his daughter. Even his words he used were totally changed. 😥

Glad you did this one! Great movie, not necessarily one you wanna re-watch all the time, but incredible still. The way he debased himself at the end was definitely uncomfortable, but I do think it made sense given the context of East Asian culture-you can't be casually gossiping about other people's shame like that. In the context of the culture, Dae-su telling his friend really was super fucked up, even though Woo-jin's actions were obviously way worse. And of course, he was just desperate to protect Mi-do from the truth. Groveling and debasing yourself is a super, super hardcore thing in those cultures, and it worked after all: Woo-jin decided it was enough for Dae-su to sacrifice all of his self-respect and integrity completely. Woo-jin still got the last laugh by killing himself in a way, which always struck me as one of the many fucked-up things about the ending, even though it was the arrangement. He got his own revenge, but Dae-su didn't get his. Woo-jin went out on his own terms. It's interesting that, on the most superficial level, it's the classic "happy ending"-good guy gets the girl, bad guy dies-but in this movie that happens to be one of the worst, most depressing outcomes possible. Always feel like I need to take a shower after I watch this movie lol, but it's one everyone should see at least once.

The last scene with him smiling is to suggest that the one that returned is "the monster" so he does remember, there is also a generally feeling that he killed the hypnotists as there is only 1 set of footprints leading away from the chairs. The extra he did was his pure desperation as Lee (bad guy) had the power with one word to ruin his daughters life forever.
@DrunkenCoward1
@DrunkenCoward1 2 года назад
Maybe the snow covered the second footprints of the hypnotist and Daesu had just been sitting there for a long time. Maybe the hypnosis itself was just a way for his mind to pretend that it has forgotten and it hasn't happened at all. After all, how would he know the hypnotist? He met her once, and he was asleep during that. Mido might have known her, but the ending implies Mido has no idea what he's doing there.
@AndyTaken
@AndyTaken 2 года назад
@@DrunkenCoward1 It's open to interpretation, but what I said seems to be the more popular/believed theory. Interesting bit of behind the scenes trivia: Choi Min-sik, the guy who plays Oh Dae-Su, is a devout Buddhist. So the scene at 8:05 where he eats a live squid was very much against his religion - but he did it anyway for the sake of the film. There are outtakes on the DVD that show Choi Min-sik praying to the squid for forgiveness before every take because eating it in such an inhumane manner was basically a sin to him.

the hallway fight is iconic in the world of single shot fight sequences. the one in the Daredevil show was partly a homage to it. the remake reminds me of when that old woman voluntarily "restored" that famous painting.

This is a classic for those of us who love violent films. I can't say enough about this movie. So glad you posted this. Under no circumstance should you watch the English remake done by Spike Lee, it's just so bad. Supposedly Josh Brolin was drunk throughout filming and it shows.

It was actually the main actor's idea to have the hallway fight be all in one shot, his reasoning was that it would show how much of a gauntlet the Dae-Su actually would go through including the lulls and points of exhaustion that would happen in that kind of knockdown drag-out brawl.

Rly liked your explanation and speaking your thoughts out loud about the movie while reacting to it. Like the term evergreen being used in the movie, u can rewatch it many tiems and still discover new details or forshadowing, symbolism etc.. Big thanks for you taking the time to feel this movie! :) P.S.: This movie is described as a modern greek tragedy, do you agree?

Definitely recommend the Yakuza series, it's a great mixture of criminal intrigue and absolute video game absurdity that's unlike just about anything else. Best starting points are probably Yakuza 0 (which is a prequel) or Yakuza Kiwami (which is a remake of the original game).

Oh and the theme song of this film (plays a few times throughout) called The Last Waltz is one of the most beautiful songs I've ever heard. Check it out in its entirety. Such a powerful piece.

This movie along with Almodovar´s "The Skin I live In" are the major plot twists in movies I´ve seen. I you liked this one, "The Skin I Live In" is worth checking out.

If you haven't already checked out Audition, please do that one! The hallway fight scene in Oldboy is THE best one shot scene, right next to the alley fight scene in They Live.

24:05 "He don't have to do all of that?" *Are you sure,* so you rather *let the your daughter knows everything* and how would she live for the rest of her life, mentally. How do you say sorry, so that the villaine will let it go? There's no other way, he needs to save his daughter, even with his life you know that from this movie perspective. Remember in REAL life people kills each other over a simple road rage, kill each other over some merchandises ....... So "Does he needs to do all of that?......YES he needs to"
