Fun fact: this movie was never really about Jack Sparrow. Disney meant for this to be a forbidden love story about Will and Elizabeth while Jack is the comic relief. But his unexpected popularity caused the character to receive bigger roles in future movies, eventually becoming the main character. Unfortunately, Jack works better as a mysterious unpredictable ally than a main character.
@JR_Prime

That actually explains why we see Will and Elizabeth in the beginning more than Jack. Wow. The more i think about it, the more i start to see Jack being the comic relief side character rather than being the main character!

I think it's would be better to say that Jack works better when he is not the ONLY main character, second and third movie are great because of that. Jack is a great protagonist, but he needs to have other characters equally important and equal time on scvreen to change the atmosphere on a more serious tone that his presence can break to give different vibes and emotions to the audience.

4:50 Fun Fact CORSETS DON'T HURT THE USER, The practice were you tie a corset so tight that it moves your organs is called "Tightlacing", and it was consider an oddity at the time. Normal corsets were just normal underwear, like a brassiere :)

@livb6945
@livb6945 6 месяцев назад
At the time when this movie was set they most definitely hurt since the aim was to have a waist as slim as possible. OF COURSE it depends on how hard you tie them. 🙈 It's not about them hurting or not. And they will restrict breathing to some extent, just like a bra does. I guess what you meant to say was that corsets were not always tied that hard. But it's important to realise that any support you constantly supply to the body will result in loss of muscle strength thus causing a difficulty to function properly without it.
@NoriMori1992
@NoriMori1992 6 месяцев назад
When you say "it was considered an oddity at the time", do you mean specifically in the mid-1700s? It's interesting how times change. It seems like it was considered quite normal in the late 1800s, at least in urban Canada, because in 1883 there's a series of letters to the editor in the _Toronto Daily Mail_ where a bunch of mothers argued with each other over what was and wasn't okay with regards to tightlacing one's daughters: What age to start them on it, how many hours a day to keep it up, how gradually to increase the tightness, how draconian to be about enforcing it, etc. They disagreed on a lot of points - one mother said she literally chained her daughter's hands every night so she couldn't remove the stays, and she thought nothing of it but the other mothers were appalled - but none of them expressed the opinion that tightlacing their daughters was wrong or weird in itself.

Bill Turner was part of the crew, but they threw him off the board strapped to a cannon into the bottom of the sea, killing him. Not only they had to return ALL the gold, but EACH of the members ahd to make a lil blood payment, and so they did.... but one: Bill (cus lad was dead af). The 'P' branded on Jack's forearm is a Pirate Brand from the East India Trading Company. Norrington essentially said as much when he revealed it. "Had a brush with the East India Trading Company, did we? Pirate?"
@a_fine_edition2746
@a_fine_edition2746 6 месяцев назад
I believe the Singapore joke is about how back then it was a bit of a pirate hub, and so full of lawlessness and general lack of propriety. In other words, Jack was getting up to no good with some ladies and is very... practiced in removing corsets. The P on Jack's arm was a literal branding that was given to him by the East India Trading Co. It was a common way to mark someone as a pirate for the rest of their life. A eunuch is usually a servant who's been castrated to avoid getting into trouble with women of the house. Jack is asking if he is one because of his assumption that Will can't find a girl or that he's perhaps found one and can't woo her. Sight the muzzle flash is Norrington telling his men to aim for the flashes of light when the Black Pearl fires it's cannons to hit it. "Make berth" refers to where the ship docks or comes to shore. The submerged boat thing is only half possible. You could create the air pocket to breathe underwater, but it would take a remarkable amount of strength to pull the boat that far under the water to the point that you're walking on the sea floor. Super happy you checked out this movie! It's a phenomenal film and a phenomenal series. Hope you check out the sequels!

1:40 Pirates act differently these days. Usually more focused on human and drug trafficking, less pillaging. You are more commonly to see them around various canals and islands, where they can maximise their profit. Sometimes they would catch tourist boats as well, but mostly just for some money. We actually have been getting pirate news at least every like month or two in Europe. As they are very much present in Mediterranean and general area around Africa and west Asia. Commonly around Suez canal. The source of it is usually just them being either involved in drug cartels or coming from war infested poor countries, where they don't have any other means to survive anymore. I think recent Internet breakage between Europe and Africa was supposedly caused by pirates damaging the cables? I could be mixing some stories tbh (there have been issues with the canal getting blocked and Russian and Middle Eastern Wars aren't helping the stability of the region).
@spinerflame7922
@spinerflame7922 6 месяцев назад
From my understanding you most often see pirates in the Red Sea (south of the Suez canal), as its an insanely trafficked shipping lane between europe, africa, the middle east, and asia. Also plenty of war-torn, desperate peoples living in that area who need the money. Most famously Somalia, which has been tearing itself apart for decades now, and various groups based around Yemen who love blowing up American and European shit

1:45 To answer your question, yes, although they are very rare nowadays, pirates do still exist in the world, but not in the way you think. Mostly, pirates use small craft to infiltrate merchant ships and other large ships for money, valuable items, or even arms. The U.S. Navy is one of the first responding forces for pirate attacks and are the international police for maritime laws. There have been cases where small groups of pirates attacked a military-owned merchant vessel, unknowingly. Solid case of fuck around and find out takes place and the pirates were repelled by necessary force. It is recommended that if you work on said vessels that you do anti-pirate training and measures and be armed to prevent pirate attacks.

I think you missed when it was explained, but basically because it’s a cursed treasure every piece of treasure that was stolen, must be returned in order to lift the curse, but also a bit of blood must be sacrificed from each person or creature that was involved with the stealing of the treasure. Blood from the next direct bloodline relative will also count. This means every single one of those crewmembers has not only returned every piece of treasure they’ve taken but also shed some blood into the chest, except one. Will Turner’s father was at one point also a member of the crew of the Black Pearl but since they don’t have him the next nearest direct, bloodline member will work. Elizabeth did not know about the curse, and how important wills blind was when she claimed to be Elizabeth Turner, so she used that name instead of her own believing that would protect her from being kidnapped because she thought she was being kidnapped because of her social status.

To lift the curse, every single gold piece must be returned to that chest, with the the blood attached of everyone, who took from the chest... Bootstrap Bill Turner was one of these pirates, who took a piece, but they killed him before they found out how to lift the curse and couldn't find his body anymore. Far out man, it’s crazy seeing people that actually still haven’t seem Pirates & then seeing their reaction. Pirates came out at a time when Disney was actually putting out some good stuff before they got poisoned by ideology & activism. In a storied career spanning a few decades, Johnny Depp probably did his best & most iconic work with the Captain Jack Sparrow character. With Captain Jack, there is no real Pirates with Geoffrey Rush’s Captain Hector Barbossa not far behind. Seeing Curse of the Black Pearl for the first time is an experience. Still, it’s so good that countless rewatches barely dulls it. Glad you enjoyed it & thanks for the reaction. Savvy?😉👍

The curse of the gold requires that the people who stole it pay it back, plus some of their blood. But shortly after they took the gold, Bootstrap spoke out against the mutiny against Jack, and they strapped cannons to his bootstraps and sunk him in the sea. THEN they found out they were cursed, and needed his blood to help undo it. However, he was at the bottom of the ocean. Their only option to get his blood was a blood descendant, his child. Elizabeth did give the name "Turner" so they wouldn't know she was the Governor's daughter, but the name she chose just happened to be the exact one they were looking for, so they took her prisoner anyway.

To answer the question whether or not of the upside-down boat underwater would work, the answer is yes and no. Yes the air pocket would work until out of breathable air, and their short walk would have plenty of time. However, two human being alone won't be strong enough to keep the air forcing the boat to rise back to the surface. There would have to be additional weight on the boat itself so that it doesn't float up, or the holders would need superhuman strength. I think there was an episode of Mythbusters on this very stunt.

5:06 that corset fact isn't true, some women did tight lace but most of the time people use padding and shit to create the illusion of a smaller waist. there actually more like a bra tbh, you can do plenty in them and if you can't breath you're wearing it wrong. 23:13 yep that's very possible, the air gets trapped under the boat creating a small pocket that you can breath in, obviously you'd run out of air eventually though the first 3 films are honestly amazing, the fourth is actually pretty alright and I've only ever heard bad things about the 5th so have fun with this series

Regarding the boat and air thing, it'd work in THEORY, but you'd have to be ridiculously strong or really heavy to prevent the boat from returning to the surface

I've heard that the boat thing can't work. This being because it's just the boat that can easily float upright, but just upside down. I think the way to get around this however is by letting a ton of the space be filled with water and only have the smallest air bubble. You'd also need an over the limit weight to hold it down. But like you said, you'd run out of oxygen extremely quick especially with a smaller pocket.

The first three films are about Elizabeth and will which is why jack is amazing, the next two are about jack which is why they weren’t anywhere near as good as the original trilogy

Holding the boat underwater wouldn't work because the boat's too buoyant. It'd take more people than can fit under there to hold it down. Assuming you could keep it down, however, there would be an air pocket.

Fun fact: corsets were not dangerous. They were designed specifically to the woman’s body for comfort, and were basically bras with front and back support. You could not wear one of those 18th century fashionable gowns without a corset. It also wasn’t possible, at this point in history, to tie your corset tight enough to hurt you, as metal eyelets weren’t a thing yet. Any attempts to tightlace would have resulted in the corset ripping.

this is the story where they took inspiration from, Jack Birdy Sparrow was a real pirate back in the day. The legendary Captain Jack Birdy, once sung about by every balladeer in England, might have all but been forgotten, yet his memory remains as the spirit behind the fictional character Captain Jack Sparrow played by Johnny Depp in the “Pirates of the Caribbean” film franchise. Who was Johnny Ward, the child rummaging through the fishing docks of Faversham? Who was John Ward, the British Naval officer? Who was Captain John Ward, the privateer endorsed by the Crown of England? Who was Captain Jack Birdy, the privateer turned pirate betrayed by that same Crown? And finally, who was Yusuf Reis, formerly Captan Jack Birdy, formerly Captain John Ward, who would rescue thousands upon thousands of Spanish Jews and Muslims fleeing the Moriscos and Conversos expulsion of the 16th and 17th centuries?These were all one man. With so many characters wrapped in one, the stories of his adventures are exponentially more exciting than anything a Hollywood film could capture.

I mean, my friend’s friend was a pirate. He would use an EMP and destroy all the electricity on a ship or a boat and then get on board and steal everybody’s shit. Usually targeted small boats. You didn’t want to target those big tankers or whatever.

pirates off the Somali coast was all stopped 10+ years ago, but i saw this in Feb this year "Hijackers are once again targeting ships off Somalia's coast and a recent spike in attacks has brought back memories from more than a decade ago. That was when armed Somali pirates scoured the waters, forcefully boarding vessels and raking in millions of dollars by demanding ransoms."

Why does he want The Pearl? Well he was the captain of that ship before Barbossa, actually Barbossa sailed under him before they made mutiny against Jack. Also that is his beloved ship since the days of Jack sailing as a privateer under The East India Trading Company, it got sunk and then risen up from the depths by a certain character that you'll see in the next film. He loves that ship more than ever.

Interesting fact about corsets, was that they were actually formed for the person, and men wore them too. They were not in fact extremely uncomfortable nor did they stop you from breathing. That myth began from the corsets that survived the test of time, were very small, but in fact most corsets that survived, were those of young ladies or youths, since they grew out of them and hence were not worn out.

Mythbusters tested the boat thing. It technically is possible if you have about a ton of weight attached to it holding it down. The buoyancy of the boat is way to high to hold like that underwater
@ortsheidi
@ortsheidi 5 месяцев назад
Technically the boat thing is possible, but it requires a lot of strength to keep the boat from floating up, and the higher the water pressure the less air you have to

Yes flipping a rowing boat underwater to have an air bubble would work assuming you have enough weight to keep the boat underwater. You can test this by submerging a glass or something at home. If you don't turn the glass right way up so that it can take in water, there will be air trapped in it.

Women still wear corsets (with safety measures and guidelines), but back then it was made to be the dresses top. If you're consistently wearing one it does alter the shape of your body to match the corsets. People call it waist training, normally using a belly band. I've heard of cases of people's organs shifting to fit in the new bone structure. The safety features we have in place now are from the corsets in this time period. Women would tighten the corsets as much as possible (maybe wearing multiple) to achieve the smallest waist, which restricts the lungs and doesnt allow them to expand to get in the right amount of air. Elizabeth was cut off from her oxygen supply and passed out from it.

Corsets weren’t always bad. Most of them, proven by lady historians who have done a lot of study into this, were comfortable if fitted right. Tight lacing wasn’t a common practice on the regular and waist training certainly wasn’t. Rather the outfits were made to create a figure with material
