First time watching PLANET OF THE APES (1968) and it holds up!! 

That "See no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil" always gets me! Lol 🤣

Possibly the most iconic ending in movie history...And terrifying

Glad the ending wasn't spoiled for you, a lot of home video releases had the final shot on the cover.

I saw this movie when it first came out in 1968 in New York City. In the scene where Charlton Heston first gets his voice back and yells “Get your stinking paws off me you damn dirty apes” the ENTIRE audience stood up and started cheering and screaming at the tops of their lungs. I will never forget that moment.

The ending is more shocking if you lived during the 70’s and early 80’s because of the daily concern about nuclear war. The US and the Soviets really were on the brink of nuclear war during those times which added to this ending.

Always found it interesting that during the filming of this film, Charlton Heston noted “an instinctive segregation on the set. Not only would the apes eat together, but the chimpanzees ate with the chimpanzees, the gorillas ate with the gorillas, the orangutans ate with the orangutans, and the humans would eat off by themselves. It was quite spooky.” HOw much does that tell us about society even now?

Now you get the end of Spaceballs.

It holds up so well not because of the effects but because of the story. It is not effects which engage us enough to suspend disbelief

If you noticed Addie, there are three distinct classes within the Apes community - the Gorillas represents the warrior class - the military, the Chimpanzees representing the intellectual class - the explorers/the scientists & the Orangutans representing the judicial/administrative class - the government.

the old ones are surprisingly appealing across demograohics. I've had friends who aren't dorks sit down and finish all 5 with me. I've had relatives ask me to explain the plots and they paid attention. they super hold up.

My dad owned all five films on VHS, I didn't appreciate them when young but I do now. I believe wholeheartedly that they did an exceptional job with makeup to make the apes look as if they evolved as humans did

When Taylor was on trial and the three judges covered their: eyes, ears and mouth. That was not rehearsed. It was “hear no evil, speak no evil and see no evil. The director said “let’s go with it.”

The ending of Spaceballs must make more sense now as well. :)

As a kid I saw this in the theater 8 times. In 1968 with no internet or streaming, that was A LOT of times to see a movie at the theater.

I consider this film to be the earliest example of modern Sci-Fi. It works on so many levels. So what if the costumes/masks/makeup are a little outdated? It's a timeless example of great story telling. Thank god for Rod Serling. Addie should watch The Twilight Zone!

The makeup in this movie was created especially for the movie, Addie. It took about 4 hours to apply to each actor's face every day.

Good reaction to this sci-fi classic Addie....I hope you continue the rest of the Apes films in the original timeline, they are... *Beneath The Planet Of The Apes (1970) *Escape From The Planet Of The Apes (1971) *Conquest Of The Planet Of The Apes (1972) (there are two versions of this film - The Theatrical Cut & Unrated Alternate Cut - with a different opening, a different ending, and other scenes that were changed...The reason for the changes was because this was intened on being the final film in the Apes series & didn't leave any openings for any possible sequels and due to poor test screenings of patrons at the time saying that the unrated alternate cut was too dark & violent...Now, personally I recommend the theatrical cut as the best & the one you should watch first...but the Unrated Alternate Cut is also an interesting watch as well to see what was changed overall). *Battle For The Planet Of The Apes (1973) (there are two versions of this film - The Theatrical Cut & The Extended Cut...due to financial problems with the studio 20th Century Fox at the time, the film was heavily edited by the studio themselves to make it under 86 minutes, against the wishes of the producer Arthur P. Jacobs & director J. Lee Thompson. The shorter runtime would allow extra showing per day in the theaters...The full 96 minutes Extended Cut is the version that the producer and director intened before all the studio edits, that they both weren't involved with and, in my own opinion, the extended cut better flows/connects the film to the rest of the films within the franchise). The Andy Serkis Apes films (which acts as soft reboots and prequels to the orginal Apes films) are... *Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes (2011) *Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes (2014) *War For The Planet Of The Apes (2017) And recently... *Kingdom Of The Planet Of The Apes (2024) They're all good & worth watching in my opinion.... Also, if you haven't got your fill of Apes yet there was also a short lived live-action & short lived animated TV series of The Planet Of Apes that are both entertaining as well.

One of the greatest pieces of fiction the Cold War produced. Kind of hope it at least helped us rethink of nuking each other into oblivion. Helped to make us think "Who are the real Apes", much as the 2000s Battlestar should make us think "Who are real robots". Just my thinking.

Funfact one of the screewriters was rod serling creator of the twilight zone. You can see the signs of it through the twist ending and social commentary in the film.

The three ape judges posing in "see no evil, hear no evil, speak on evil" pose was an idea of one of the producers the day they filmed the scene.

"Beneath the Planet of the Apes" answers all the questions and is quite interesting!

Remember in Spaceballs when the 2 apes saw the men coming out of the Statue of Liberty esk Mega Maid head and said, "Spaceballs!... There goes the planet." It was a reference to this ending.

"Why is it called The Forbidden Zone?' "No one knows. It's an ancient taboo. The Lawgiver declared this whole area deadly." Radiation levels that took 2,000 years to go away.

The landing took place at Lake Powell, they walked through Monument Valley, and Ape City was filmed at the 20th Century Fox Ranch in Malibu, where Mash would be shot. Taylor is called Bright Eyes was because he was the only one with blue eyes. The story was based on a 1963 French Sci-Fi novel.

I read the book on which this was based years ago - it’s really interesting and some major changes were made (especially the twist at the end).

1) Taylor, the ultimate misanthrope, is forced to defend humanity throughout the movie once the first hunt ends. What irony. 2) Look at Taylor's face while Cornelius reads the 29th scroll. He knows these words could've come from himself only a short time ago. He's stunned. 3) Also, as far as the ending, the quote from Einstein I think applies: "I know not with what weapons World War III will be fought, but World War IV will be fought with sticks and stones".

I like the part where they do archeological research and arguing if man was first smart being while couple miles down the shore there is giant human-shaped dressed statue holding a book.

While I’m not a genealogist, and it doesn’t really affect the story itself, I always found it so amusing that the four spacemen were going to establish their own colony off planet with just one woman!😂

You have so many reactions to cool old movies and I can recommend another hidden gem. The movie is called "Stay" from 2005, not many people have heard of it at all.

12:31 in the museum. That scene scared the crap out of me as a kid. This film sure does a good job of turning the tables and letting humans know how animals must feel.

Great cinematography and beautuful natural scenery help to make this movie a timeless classic. I like a strong natural element in sci-fi.

Always does my heart good to see another young person experience this landmark film. I highly recommend watching ESCAPE FROM THE PLANET OF THE APES. It's actually the 3rd film but it's always been the second one in my heart. It dovetails perfectly with this. The big moment in this one for me was never the ending ... it's when the doll says "mama". I don't know what it is but it gives me chills TO THIS DAY. Have you seen 2001 A SPACE ODYSSEY yet? Incredibly it ALSO came out in '68.

Another one of those many many great scores by Jerry Goldsmith. One time, he appeared to a recording session to conduct with an ape mask on.

Interesting trivia: Remember the old man prisoner Brooks from The Shawshank Redemption? He's the middle orangutan, the president of the assembly, during Taylor's hearing.

Im a young guy and I still think this is the best in the entire series. Groundbreaking film.

Dr. Zaius was played by famed Shakesperean Actor Maurice Evans. Today he mostly remembered for playing Samantha's Father on the TV series Bewitched.

It means that when someone travels near the speed of light, time moves differently for that person than it does on Earth. No one perceives anything different, but one second for the fast person is like days, weeks, or years for people on Earth.

I hope you go back and watch the rest of the original series. The third is my absolute favorite. Even the Tim Burton remake starring Marky Mark is worth a watch.

I remember seeing this in the theater in 1968 and when Taylor shouts, "Take your stinking paws off me, YOU DAMN DIRTY APE!" the whole theater erupted in Cheers, Applause and Shouting. Yes the end is a trip - if nobody spoiled it. At least watch BENEATH THE PLANET OF THE APES (1970), but the rest of the old ones rather stink. These were Charlton Heston's peak years - check him out in THE OMEGA MAN (1971) - the best rendition of that post-apocalyptic tome by Richard Matheson.

This movie 🎥 is a complete switch on life. What we have done to animals , they are doing to us . Also, Rod Serling of Twilight Zone fame wrote this.

The thing about the original POTA, and how it holds up to this day, is that the production and presentation is a bit dated, but the storytelling is still incredibly strong. There are moments of pure genius in this, from concepts, to world building, to dialog exchanges. Real good filmmaking here.

I went to the theater for this one. Yes, I'm that old. This was a groundbreaking project in make up and prosthetics use. As impressive in 1968 as Star Wars special was effects in 1977. Bummer. Neutered and used for experiments. I too, would be escaping at all costs! Roddy McDowell actually showed up on the Carol Burnett Show in ape make-up. Also, I don't know if you've ever heard of Paul Williams (singer/songwriter), but he played Virgil (an orangutan) in Battle For The Planet of the Apes in 1973, showed up on the Johnny Carson Show in full costume straight from the set for an appearance.

Hello Addie!😊 Sometime in the future you should come back and visit some of the sequels. This film and the third one "Escape from the Planet of the Apes" (1971) are my favorites. They were cranking these films out almost every year back then, which was very uncommon. THANK YOU for reacting to this movie!, I saw this in a theatre in march 1968 when I was 7 years old, its the first movie I ever saw in a theatre. this movie scared the hell out of me when they first showed the apes, the ending shocked the entire audience, they were dead silence at the ending. this movie remains one of my top 15 movies of all time.

This is enough to get the core of the new series of films, where the ideas come from. The basic premise is really all they work off, as they are a reboot about how our world progressed toward a “planet of the apes” (Not a spoiler as the first modern film starts out that way). The sequels to this are worth a watch, though.

saw this film when it first came out in sixty-eight and I was only about twelve yrs old. It blew my mind and and I never get tired of watching reactions to it particularly very "fresh-faced" ones like yours. The more times I see it the funnier it looks to me.⚛😀

The Andy Circus movies are really good, but I wish more people would watch the rest of the old ones first. They aren't rated as high, but the old movies tell the story of how we got to the setting of this first movie where apes rule and humans are the animals. It's a really profound storyline. The new movies are basically reinterpretations of those older sequels.

No spoilers, its definitely worth continuing with the original movies Addie.

Spacecraft tend to be able to float on the water because if something is airtight, then chances are that it's watertight, too. Of course, hitting the water so hard could have caused serious damage and caused leaks, but at least everyone who was still alive managed to get out.

The original "Planet of the Apes," was a quintile. Though the budgets decreased with each movie, the story is still fascinating. Spoilers below: The Planet of the Apes was a time loop. Although in the last movie the loop was broken.

This was adapted from a well written novel and did very well at the box office. It has multiple sequels/prequels which aren't nearly as good. If I remember correctly, there was also some kind of TV series.

I have never seen the modern Planet of the apes films. It is more, because I don`t like so modern films. But I have seen all the old movies. I really like the third film and the end of the second is really shocking. Many say that the later of the old films are not so good, but I think that it is interesting to see the whole story through all five films. Anyway, great reaction.

Paul Williams the musician is in one of the classic " Planet Of The Apes " movies. He also did the soundtrack to : Bugsy Malone - The Muppet Movie ( from the late 70's ) - Smokey & The Bandit & and many other hits and movies.

You should watch the rest of this original series. It shows an amazing level of story writing. The Andy Circus one is not part of this series. It’s a reboot.

I was seven in 1968 so the original five POTA movies were hugely influential on me. Many of the incredibly layered themes were lost on me until I watched each one many times. It was great to grow up in a time when many movies weren't dumbed down and indeed expected a decent level of intelligence and perception in it's audience! Not a fan of the newer ones or modern movies generally, I'd recommend the sequel - Beneath the Planet of the Apes.

That’s what’s so great about the og film how many themes it deals with and how much social commentary. “The forbidden zone was once a paradise, but the greed of man made it barren.” Habitat loss, deforestation, man encroaching on nature. “Destroy the cave. What I do is with no pleasure.” Having to play along with the cover up versus causing societal chaos if they knew the truth, essentially the state hiding things from the public. The role reversal and how much it mirrors man’s treatment of lower animals - aka allegory of slavery and institutionalized ethnic discrimination. All major issues when film first released and just as contentious issues today if not more so.

And this is why the WHOLE Planet of the Apes thing is STILL so popular. What they are making TODAY is based on GREATNESS. 1968 Greatness to be exact. Of course, they have better technology today. LMAO! Great Post, Addie.

I don't think it's a necessity to watch the older movies before watching the newer ones, but it is a good option. It allows one to compare and contrast both eras of this brilliant franchise.

As good refreshing & high quality RISE OF APES is, this original film remains the best most important film in "the franchise" I'm glad youve seen the parallels between the film & the real life issues of the late 60s - the cold war, civil rights, Witch hunt trials etc

Even if you don't do a reaction to them, the other four movies of the "original' five are well worth watching. I'm sure you'll enjoy them.

I was so worried she was going to see one of the stupid movie covers that show the sunken Statue of Liberty. I mean, what the hell are they thinking putting that on the movie poster? It totally blows the ending for anyone that doesn’t know it. 🤷‍♂️

Before doing Rise, I highly recommend Beneath first.

The new Apes films have callbacks and Easter eggs to all of the original franchise films.

Was lucky to see the first three in theaters. Trailers did a good job of creating interest while keeping the best back for the movie goer.

- Besides Charleton Heston, who won an Oscar for Ben-Hur (Best Actor), there is another Oscar-winner in the cast. Kim Hunter, who plays Dr. Zira, won an Oscar for her role as Stella Kowalski in A Streetcar Named Desire opposite Marlon Brando and Vivien Leigh. Both Hunter and Brando reprised their roles from the original Broadway production of the Tennessee Williams play. - Dr. Cornelius was played by Roddy McDowell. McDowell possessed one of the most recognizable voices in Hollywood and was an actor since he was a child. One of his best friends was Elizabeth Taylor, with whom he made the film Lassie Come Home in 1943. He did films, TV, and the stage. He did Shakespeare and musicals, originating the role of Mordred in Lerner and Loewe's Camelot with Richard Burton as Arthur and Julie Andrews as Guinevere. The next couple of sequels are pretty good, then have the typical decline in quality. I have never seen the new Planet of the Apes films after the Tim Burton re-boot (which angered me A LOT with it's twist ending that could be considered a bit plaguristic...and a long story). So...I have no idea what Andy Sirkis does with his role, or the story and if they in any way fold into the original few films from the 60s and 70s.

This old classic definitely holds up, especially the performances of Charlton Heston, Roddy McDowell and Maurice Evans
