Love watching you explore these movies for the first time. I would recommend watching the 1938 “The Adventures of Robin Hood” if you want to see where some of the plot and aesthetics that weren’t a parody of Prince of Thieves comes from. Hope you enjoy the recommendation and keep up the fantastic content.
One really funny thing about that line is: Cary Elwes had been in America so long at this point that he had to have voice lessons to re-learn his English accent for the movie.
Fun fact, you asked how where Mel brooks gets his sense of humor, he was a combat engineer for the us army, European theatre. One of his first gags was hooking up a loud speaker and blasting a famous Jewish singer (brooks himself also Jewish) to drown out nazi propaganda. He thought it was hilarious, after the war he wrote “the producers” which features a song called “springtime for hitler”
I've heard that either when they were filming the first movie or rehearsing the stage musical an old man came up to Mel Brooks and said he couldn't portray WW2 like that because "I was in WW2, there's nothing funny about it. To which Mel Brooks replied "You were in WW2? I was in WW2! I didn't see you there!"
It started well before the war. Brooks was a small, weak kid, and the youngest of four brothers in a poor family whose father died when he was two. He dealt with a lot of bullying and teasing growing up, and used jokes and comedy as a way to cope and get out of situations. He turned that into a career in comedy and show business starting at age 14.
This is probably my favorite interpretation of Prince John. “We shall have a wedding, or a hanging...either way, we all have a lot of fun, huh?” (Crowd cheers)
Always remember that the crowd that applauds your coronation will also applaud your execution. The people likes a show. - Terry Pratchett (Paraphrased from memory)
This was a parody of both Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves and The Adventures of Robin Hood starring Errol Flynn, Basil Rathbone, and Olivia DeHaviland from 1938.
Also, it's kind of a remake of an old Mel Brooks tv series about Robin Hood (look it up) - seen the abbot? in that old series he played Friar Tuck. Sadly, he was the only one of the old cast that could return...
The reason you are always impressed by the production put in to Mel's movies is that he truly loves the genres he's parodying. He's making fun as a fan boy.
Dick Van Patten was in "Men In Tights: The Series". OK, it was actually called "When Things Were Rotten". It actually was a TV series produced by Brooks way back in the 70s. Dick Van Patten portrayed Friar Tuck. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-sh-pHGzmELg.html It was cancelled after just one year. Good news for Dick Van Patten; he then got the job on "Eight Is Enough".
Blinken can't see because he wears black, not see-through glasses. Glasses up, Blinken sees. Blinken hits the tree, knocks the glasses back down and goes blind.
Just watched this with my son over Thanksgiving. When Blnkin appears, he said, 'It'd be funny if he could actually see, but can't because of the glasses.' I was so proud of him for predicting that so early on.
I always thought it was because he fell out of the tree stand and it joggled his head causing him to be able to see again but when he hits the tree, it makes his vision go away again.
The fact that he actually understands the jokes is huge, too. Jesus the amount of people who stare right at 5* jokes with a blank face...oof. Great reaction.
This is will always be one of my favorite movies! And yes, that whole "Godfather" scene is a classic. "Don Giovanni, your lizard seems a little....limp."
"Because, unlike some other Robin Hoods, I can speak with an English accent." was meant as a dig to Kevin Costner's version of Robin Hood because halfway through that movie he lost the accent and spoke without the accent.
I heard that in other countries/languages, that line got changed so that the Costner reference remained clear. (e.g.: "Because, unlike some other Robin Hoods, I do not dance with wolves.")
Some dated references: The boy running and screaming was doing a Macauly Culkin "Home Alone" impression. The Patriot Missile was one of the first "smart" missiles, although it really only served as an interceptor. The "Men in Tights" song uses the same melody from "Jews in Space". The reason the men take pantyhose out of eggs is because L'eggs brand used to sell pantyhose in plastic eggs. Also, Robert Ridgely played the hangman in both this and Blazing Saddles, and this was Dave Chapelles debut film.
I’ve scrolled through a ton of comments looking to see if I should explain the Patriot arrow reference from the competition scene or if anyone had explained it yet and finally saw your excellent comment (in case anyone’s curious, I’ll just add that the Patriot Missile got a ton of press the two years prior to the release of Robin Hood Men In Tights due to Operation Desert Storm dominating the news: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MIM-104_Patriot).
@@daytoncharitychicken Isn't it amazing (and a little depressing) remembering how that was the most amazing thing back then, compared to today, when dumb bombs are categorized in the place as WWI flechettes in the minds of the current generation?
I think Cary Elwes first learned sword training in The Princess Bride (which came before Robin Hood). From what I read in Cary’s book about making The Princess Bride, him and the actor who played Inigo Montoya were pretty (playfully) competitive about their training so he definitely knows how to handle a sword.
The woman playing the witch is Tracy Ullman. She's a British comedian famous for playing multiple characters. Also, her variety show on Fox back in the day is where the Simpsons originally premiered in the early 90s.
Yes, I agree that as a comedienne her role here was brilliant. Not only did The Simpsons start on her show, she was the original voice of Marge. On top of that, she hated the cartoon. She didn't think anything of it, that it would not go anywhere, and thought it should be cancelled. However, once The Simpsons had gained a level of fame that her show never had, she was known to tout that if it wasn't for her and how her show "nurtured" them; that they would not have made it and if it wasn't for her, we wouldn't have them. She is also known to have mentioned that she was glad that she could help them get a start and happy for their success. Still, she was absolutely brilliant in this movie.
And interesting fact that was that Tracey is a singer too which you remember her song They Don't Know where the video she was in the car with Paul McCartney
@@derGhebbet lmao That's No Offense And Yeah I Know The World We're In Today It's Just A Shame That I Said That Comment With A Smile On My Face And Everyone Getting Offended Which Is So Stupid.
the priest at the wedding scene was speaking "pig latin", which is done by moving the first syllable of the word to the end, and appending "ay", so "blessings" becomes "essingsblay"
Cary Elways was fantastic in this film, but shout out to the underrated performance of the Sheriff of Rottingham. Dude was absolutely hilarious in that movie
14:14 You may be too young lol but there once was a metal device ( often red ) you would put on a steering wheel to lock it, called "club". Which is what they're referencing as if the horse was a car. Not so much a bicycle.
I Love this movie! I saw it in the theater and I almost peed cause I laughed so hard. I also really like how it wasn’t just a parody of Prince of Thieves but also a lot of other Robin Hood movies. The archery contest is just like the Disney movie. Thanks for the upload!!
you did well to watch "Prince of Thieves" before you turned to this classic. Now you can fully appreciate the satire that went into this. Mel Brooks only would parody what he respected (which is why we never got a "Scary Movie" film by him, he disliked 'slasher flicks'), and it shows in this movie!
The actor who played the hangman in this and Blazing Saddles was a close friend of Brooks. He also played the producer who got busted on pedo charges in the movie “Boogie Nights”.
This was my first favorite movie! I stumbled across it doing community service at charity works at 12 years old. I was fleeing my family and got in trouble for trespass. Hard time and hilarious movie
I'm glad you stuck with watching this movie through to the end. It's a favorite cult classic that will never be replaced and therefore deserves at least a 9/10 for originality and the ability to quote the entire script by any fan. It never gets old or boring.
Great video. Love that you made a disappointed “awww” at the same time as the crowd watching robins song/sword. Also, watch Kung Pow: Enter the Fist. Martial art movie thats part spoof and part reworking of an actual old martial arts movie
History part 1 should be #1 on the list of Brooks movies due to the lack of reaction for Mel's last joke. Will also make a recent discovery even better (Space Lasers)
@@elvesrus "lack of reaction" also on the fact that the "Men In Tights" song is basically the "Jews In Space" song with different lyrics. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ZAZhtT-dUyo.html
Carey Elwes was playing Robin as Errol Flynn. Before you watch this again you have to see the 1938 Technicolor spectacular: "The Adventures of Robin Hood"
Carey Elwes was actually the first choice for Robin Hood due to his performance in The Princess Bride. He actually hung up on Mel Brooks at 1st because he thought it was a prank call until Mel called him right back.
Just wanted to tell you I’ve been binging your videos the past few nights and hearing your joyful laughter, seeing your love for film has put a smile on my face. I’ve been sick the past week and finding your channel has lifted my spirits.
18:05 I think most people realize he's mimicking England's prim minister during most of WW2, Winston Churchill. Churchill's iconic way of speaking had three causes. He had a minor lisp, he copied some of his American mother's speaking habits and he drank heavily to muster up the courage to speak in public because of the first 2 reasons. That said, the man had a powerful way about him that people listened to. The speech they're poking fun of was actually very important and inspired a lot of soldiers. I learned part of it for an acting class and listened to the last few paragraphs of it (all we had time for) over and over to copy him as best I could. He may have talked a little funny but, the man knew _what_ to say.
I remember seeing this at the movies when it first came out. My friends and I were laughing so hard we were in tears. I'm a huge Mel Brooks fans. High Anxiety, History of the World Part 1, Spaceballs, Blazing Saddles, Young Frankenstein.... he's made so many hilarious movies.
"Deered to kill a kings dare" - I've seen this move quite a few times and been years since I've seen it again, and this joke of getting deer and dare mixed up kind of went over my head at the time, but now hearing it back after so long cracks me up! This whole movie is so good
Aw man I haven't seen this movie in years! This was a fun walk down memory lane and I was surprised by how many of the lines I remembered. "Call the locksmith!"
This film is hilarious and spoof movies are amazing and your channel is freaking awesome!!!!!!!!! Plus only asking can you react to Bill and Ted's excellent adventure?
I don't know, if someone told me Dave Chappelle was in a movie I would stop what I was doing and go watch it, and I am white as hell. Dave is just really funny. I have no idea who said that or why, but I wouldn't read too much into it.
Every time I watch your videos about these classic comedies, I have a constant smile on my face! It always brings me such joy to see people who appreciate these movies as much as I do
Next up: The Producers (1968) The Twelve Chairs Life Stinks To Be Or Not to Be (1983 - even if it's just to see yet another parody of Hitler singing 'a little piece of Poland) Silent Movie (literally only one spoken word in the whole movie) High Anxiety (Mel Brook's tribute to Alfred Hitchcock - though you'll need to see some of him most famous movies first) Dracula: Dead and Loving It History of the World Part 1 (and make sure you stay for the trailer for History of the World Part 2) The Producers (2005 - stay for the song at the end of the credits)
Love this movie. One of the many great ones that my brother introduced me to years ago. Makes me think of him everytime I see it and brings back great memories. Thanks for watching it and sharing it with us.
I love that the blind guy's name is Blinkin. The witch was Tracey Ulman. She's funny as hell too. She had her own comedy variety show back in the day which is where The Simpsons first came from. They did little two minute shorts before they had their own show. "Certain? You want certain hire yourself a witch. I'm just your cook. Here, eat this."
I’ve always cried over how in the scene where Rabbi Tuckman says that Robin and Marian would be perfect for each other as their family names were Loxley and Bagelle. LOX AND BAGELS. 🤣😂😭💀 Mel Brooks would always sprinkle and reference Jewish humor in his films.
“A black sheriff???!” And then Blinkin popping in with the American accent “He’s black??!” First time my family watched this, we DIED when we got to this part
24:24 Actually you are right on the money on that. They did a documentary about the film and the actors all said that doing this movie was an absolute blast and working for Mel Brooks was just a lot of fun in general. They said that if things got too serious he'd yell that it was too quiet on the set and somebody needed to start goofing around immediately.
Roger Rees (Sheriff of Rottingham) is the best part of this film. Normally learning your lines must be difficult but to learn them in the wrong order like he did and to make it so funny is unbelievable. Also "Love this art design and the soundtrack is pretty good already" not noticing that the current song when he said that was Row Row Row your boat 😂😂😂Great vid as usual. Love this film so much.
I would hope people bring up Dave Chapel being in this movie because it was early in his career and he's a very funny individual - thus adding to the hype and promise of how humorous the film will be. I remember watching this one enough that I had the script all but memorized.
You're probably too young to get the Patriot Arrow joke. Back in the Reagan years there was the Patriot missile or MMA104. It was a surface to air missile designed to shoot down enemy aircraft VERY accurately. It was used in the Persian Gulf War.
The song that played over the credits at the end actually got a decent amount of radio play on the easy listening stations when the movie came out. They did a decent job on that one.
Everytime I see Blinkin, I have to think of Alan Arkin in 'Wait until Dark'. He looks so similar. 'Wait until Dark' is fantastic thriller by the way. It is with Audrey Hepburn and from the mid 1960s. I definitely recommend!
This is what reaction vids should be! It feels exactly like if we were all in watching together with you on a movie night or something xD ( Esp at 26:46! )Your laughter is so rich and warm and honest and catching 😂 It made it even better that you got most of the references too xD ( The 'Patriot Arrow' one is from a movie about a self-guided missile program code-named Patriot Arrow :) ) Keep it up, you made a subscriber of me! 😁💙👏 If you haven't already, check out Dracula Dead And Loving It! Also by Mel Brooks, it's hilarious and stars the Maid Marion actress again. ETA - The jacket's snappy!
The old man disguise at the archery tournament may be a reference to a Robin Hood miniseries from the 1980s, so just a few years before this movie was made. That series was made in England and starred Michael Praed. It was prettt good, at least in the beginning, but it had some mystical and magical elements in some episodes that were a bit much.
In the german version of the movie the Joke about the other Robin Hood is: "Because unlike some other Robin Hood, I didn't Costner the producer 4 Million."
Yo mellow! If you haven't seen Top Gun or hot shots, you gotta do a reaction to both like you did with both Robinhood movies! Hot Shots is a parody of Top Gun. There is a second Hot Shots movied (called hot shots part deux) but that is a parody of the second Rambo movie but is still a direct sequel to the first movie lolol! So maybe Top Gun, then Hot Shots, Then Rambo 2, then Hot shots 2??? Lol
I remember watching this in the cinema when it released and the wedding scene when the bishop says mervin and everyone burst out laughing(you didn't show it) had the entire cenima in stitches.
