Your reaction is entirely appropriate. The Normandy landing scene is one of the most horrific and realistic depictions of war ever put on film. Something every single American should watch at least once, lest we forget the sacrifices of our ancestors. One of my favorite quotes about war from the Television show M.A.S.H. (a show that followed doctors serving in the korean war. Hawkeye is a surgeon and Father Mulcahy is a priest. Father Mulcahy: War is hell. Hawkeye : War isn't Hell. War is war, and Hell is Hell. And of the two, war is a lot worse. Father Mulcahy : How do you figure, Hawkeye? Hawkeye : Easy, Father. Tell me, who goes to Hell? Father Mulcahy : Sinners, I believe. Hawkeye : Exactly. There are no innocent bystanders in Hell. War is chock full of them - little kids, cripples, old ladies. In fact, except for some of the brass, almost everybody involved is an innocent bystander.

"Hell, these guys deserve to go home as much as I do. They've fought just as hard." "Is that what I'm supposed to tell your mother when she gets another folded American flag?" "You can tell her that when you found me, I was with the only brothers I had left. And that there was no way I was deserting them. I think she'd understand that." Fun Fact: Steven Spielberg cast Matt Damon as Private Ryan because he wanted an unknown actor with an All-American look. He did not know Damon would win an Oscar for Good Will Hunting (1997) and become an overnight star before the film was released. Irish Invasion Fact: The Omaha Beach scene cost $11 million to shoot, and involved up to 1,000 extras, some of whom were members of the Irish Army Reserve. Of those extras, 20-30 of them were amputees, issued with prosthetic limbs, to play soldiers who had their limbs blown off. Historical Fact: Upham's shoulder patch, a blue and grey "yin yang" symbol, identifies him as a member of the 29th U.S. Infantry Division. It symbolizes the fact that the division was composed of units from Virginia and Maryland, who fought on both sides of the American Civil War. Absolutely Surrounded Fact: Cinemas were instructed to up the volume when they showed the film, as the sound effects play such a crucial part in its overall effect. I specifically remember this, because the theatre I was had surround sound and the sound of that heavy tank approaching came from EVERY speaker. I was having a small panic attack (I was 17 at the time and I just signed up to join the US Army, so cut me a little slack) leading to the final battle.

My blood Father was in WWII. He went from Anzio beachhead to up to Hitler’s fortress. He said Americans did cry for their wives, sweethearts & moms as they lay wounded or dying. My folks marriage didn’t last after the war as he became an alcoholic. Too many war memories, she said. War is hell and it can still be hell after it’s over. “Earn this is meant for all of us …thank all of you who fought for the freedom we all enjoy .

I saw this in the theater when it first came out. There were many WW2 veterans sitting near me. When the D-Day scene was over they were all weeping. A veteran sitting behind me said to his wife, "now you finally know what my war was really like".

I was privileged to be at the premiere in Paris on the Champs Élysées, where the The invited included several hundred American veterans of the D-Day landing and the liberation of Berlin, as well as French veterans who were there for the celebrations. The first three or four rows reserve exclusively for them, some in wheelchairs, all of them of a certain age of course… I cannot tell you the number of them who left during the opening sequence, It was a steady in an increasingly large stream of sobbing men in their family members, and the number of tears and sobs I heard was shocking.;;; That opening assault is definitely one of the most visceral, shocking, sequences, ever put on film-- and yet that first time, I have to tell you I spent most of my time, looking at the faces of these heroes, tears streaming down their faces, and some of them, unable to take it… More evidence that is what it truly Felt like to be on that beach on the day I need not.

There's absolutely nothing wrong with you for being so deeply affected by seeing all this suffering. Some wars do have important moral imperatives, but all war is full of grey areas. Regardless of the uniform they wear, everyone's feet hurt after marching all day, everyone desperately misses home and their loved ones, everyone is terrified of dying. Even when there is a meaningful cause, we should never rejoice at seeing pain and suffering in other people. Sometimes we have to fight for the right thing, but we always have to remember that we're all feeling human beings, and I think your reaction clearly shows you have a deep sense of humanity. This was a very powerful video, thank you.

He had trouble with taking a life and dealing with his fear that’s why he hesitated. Then he learned that war, doesn’t care. Anything you do can get you killed, including nothing. Might as well do your job.

The allies had yet to see the actual nightmare that was happening until they stumbled upon the first concentration camps. My grandfather was in the group that discovered Buchenwald. Stephen Spielberg held a private screening for the WW2 veterans whose stories helped with certain details. It was just after the Dday landing scene and a few got up and walked out. Spielberg stopped the movie and rushed out to see them. The men were crying and shaking saying it was like being back on that beach that day. My grandfather was virtually a child when he fought in WW1 to then fight in WW2. His body was all scared from burns he suffered in battle. He was such a quite man I hardly remember him speaking. But even after going through everything he never complained. How do u keep ur sanity through all of that. I feel ashamed when I moan about anything.

You notice at the end his wife read the name of Cpt Miller and obviously didn't recognize it... Probably 40+yrs married and he never even talked about it with his own wife. Often the only people they feel comfortable opening up to in that regard is other veterans, men who've been through the same things and can understand.

There were five invasion beaches at Normandy. The planners expected casualties at all five to be as bad as they were at Omaha. Back in WWII families would be notified of a death by a telegram. Gas was very heavily rationed. As soon as Mrs Ryan saw a car driving up with an officer and a minister she knew it was bad. There is an old poem by Thomas MacAulay titled Horatius at the Bridge. It tells a story like this, holding a bridge against overwhelming odds. The rules about brothers in combat changed after the Niland brothers and the Sullivan brothers. We would like to think that we would be brave in circumstances like this but truthfully we would be like Upham. If you haven’t seen Band of Brothers you should. It tells the true story of the company of parachute troops that the fictional Ryan was assigned to.

That opening scene is still one of the craziest war scenes to me. I'm a combat vet and haven't been able to watch any new war movies since _Hurt Locker,_ but all of the old ones like this and _We Were Soldiers_ I still get a lot of joy out of. I've told my son since birth that I really don't want him to follow in my footsteps, but I'd support his decision no matter what should he decide I guess. High possibility considering there's predatory a🤬 recruiters everywhere where we're from, but I'm confident I've made it clear to him what they're all about. He's a few years from military age, and our government loves its wars, so it's getting a little scary.

In August of last year I went to Omaha Beach in France. I saw the coastline where the military transport vehicles came in and the beach where the brave men of the greatest generation came to save the world. Later I went to the Normandy American Cemetary and walked among the gravesites. I got angry because there because politicians in Washington today are using their positions of power to become millionaires and celebrities. Those brave soldiers who died for us didn't sacrifice for the scum in Washington. They sacrificed so we can sleep in warm beds at night and enjoy the freedoms our country provides us with. The soldiers who died and the soldiers who came back to move on with their lives are always to be honored and never forgotten.

That was a great reaction, thank you. A couple of scenes show the brutality and horror of war in understated ways. The first is the scene with the pool of typists who are transcribing letters sent by officers to the families of their men killed in action. ~50 typists were working 8 ~ 10 hour days for who knows how long, preparing letters to families, each of which will be as devastated as Mrs. Ryan. Then there’s the scene where Cpt. Miller tells the wrong James F. Ryan that his brothers are dead. It just shakes me how important each bit of information was. Even with everyone exerting the maximum possible effort with good intentions things still went wrong and traumatized people. Finally, I lose it every time when Ryan asks his wife, “tell me I’m a good man. Tell me I’ve led a good life.” Even with his entire family in the background, he needs reassurance that the deaths of the squad and Miller meant something.

They got the idea for this movie based on the Niland brothers that were mentioned in the book (1992) "Band of Brothers" which with the success of this movie HBO made the 10 part mini series "Band of Brothers" in the book 2 Troopers of E/506th (Muck & Malarkey ). meet up while on leave with Sergeant Frederick William "Fritz" Niland (H/501st PIR , 101st A/B)and his Brother Bob Niland (D/505th PIR 82nd A/B) BOB had been on combat in the MTO (N.Africa/Sicily/Italy) so the picked his brain about combat and he was killed on june 6th while manning his machine gun. Second Lieutenant Preston Thomas Niland was killed on june 7th with the 22nd Infantry Regiment, 4th Infantry Division,, Technical Sergeant Edward Francis Niland was shot down in may in Burma but was taken as a POW. their was no rescue mission it was when Fritz went to find his brother Bob over at the 82nd that the chaplain found him and he was sent home and served state side as a MP till the end of the war.

The opening scene Ryan goes to the grave of his brother, at the end he's at the grave of Capt. Miller's grave. His family is directly behind him at the first grave site, at the end, his family remains at a respectful distance, except for his wife who has no idea who Miller is. Ryan went home and never told anyone about that day in Ramell. WW II was fought by men; the average age of U. S. combat personnel was 26 years old. The SGT. in the assault boat wasn't putting food in his mouth, that was chewing tobacco. They were in very rough seas and it took hours for the soldiers to disembark the troop ships into the Higgins Boats. Not knowing when they would ever have a good cooked meal again, many of the soldiers ate a hearty breakfast before disembarking. The first group to load into the boats bobbed around in the water for several hours before heading toward the beach. Many get seasick during that time. The vomit wasn't the main problem, the blood in the boats created a psychological problem when the boats returned to bring more soldiers to the beach. In Vietnam, the average age of combat personnel was 22, not 19 as many people think. Also, the largest number of U. S. personnel killed in action in Vietnam those who enlisted not draftees. Spielberg researched small details, for instance, Pvt Jackson's right thumb has a black mark on it. That's actually a bruise that many U. S. riflemen had caused from getting their thumb caught in the loading mechanism from not locking the bolt back properly when loading/reloading the M1 Garand rifle. It was called "Garand thumb". Capt. Miller said he taught at Thomas Alva Edison High School. That's a Spielberg paying homage to Thomas Alva Edison High School in Philadelphia, PA. 54 former students from that school were killed in action in the Vietnam War, more than any other school in the nation. The Hitler Youth Knife is more literary liberty than fact. That knife is a hiking knife given to members of the Hitler Youth Corps, which was much like the Boy Scouts in training while being indoctrinated with the ideology of National Socialist German Workers Party (Nazi). The only other group they were issued to were members of the SA. This knife was never part of a soldier of the Wehrmacht. As for the reaction of Carparzo and Mellish, it is highly unlikely an average G.I. would have known what that knife was and its symbolism. The matter of Mellish crying is also not likely as the Allies didn't find out about the fate of Jews in Europe until the first concentration camp was liberated April 4, 1945. The war in Europe ended May 7, 1945. So, following the real timeline, Mellish dies before the Allies knew anything about concentration and death camps. But, after-all, it is Hollywood. Saving Private Ryan is not based on the Sullivan brothers. Fritz Niland became the basis for Private Ryan. He was dropped behind enemy lines on D-Day and spent five days in the French countryside, eventually earning a Bronze star in combat for taking a French. Robert Rodat first came up with the plot in 1994 when he saw a monument in a cemetery in Tonawanda, New York. The monument was to the Niland Brothers - 4 young American men who fought in the Second World War. When three of the Nilands were reported killed, the surviving brother - Fritz - was sent home. This inspired Rodat to write his movie. There are 26 military cemeteries across Normandy, but the most famous and visited site is the poignant Normandy American Cemetery in Colleville-sur-Mer. The Normandy American Cemetery and Memorial in France is located in Colleville-sur-Mer, on the site of the temporary American St. Laurent Cemetery, established by the U.S. First Army on June 8, 1944 as the first American cemetery on European soil in World War II. The cemetery site, at the north end of its half mile access road, covers 172.5 acres and contains the graves of 9,387 of our military dead, most of whom lost their lives in the D-Day landings and ensuing operations. In real life with the Nilands, it actually turned out later that another of the brothers was alive - he’d been held captive in a Burmese POW camp. Attempts to point out the "discrepancies" between the stories of Fritz Niland and James Ryan are often misguided, as Ryan is only based on Niland, and is not meant to be (or claimed to be) a completely accurate representation of him. The differences in the two stories seem to stem in part from the fact that the true story of Sergeant Niland and his brothers is often reported inaccurately. The character of Private James Ryan is a mixture of fact and fiction, with some of the fictional elements coming from the erroneous stories about the Niland brothers. The German credited as "Steamboat Willie" who was released by Capt. Miller is not the German who engaged and killed Pvt Stanley "Fish Mellish during hand-to-hand combat. "Steamboat Willie" was in the Heer (Army) of the Wehrmacht and the other was in the Waffen SS which was a paramilitary organization and not part of the Wehrmacht. Originally, the SS uniform differed from the Wehrmacht uniform-whereas the regular army wore field grey, the SS wore black, head to toe (although later the SS did adopt field grey and often wore camouflage pattern uniform. American troops were brown and they didn't wear jackboots. The lightning bolt SS insignia can be seen on the right collar lapel of the German as he passes Upham and reaches the bottom of the staircase. During the Battle at Ramelle, Upham became shell shocked and was unable to save a .30 cal team from a German soldier because he was too frozen with fear to do anything about it. He carried all the .30 caliber ammo at the battle of Ramelle, but was unable to do his job because he was always either pinned down or too afraid to move. He signified the loss of innocence in war and thought that soldiers could be civil, but he later succumbed to the evils of war and made up for his cowardice when he shot Steamboat Willie for killing Miller even after the latter had shown Willie mercy earlier. Not only did Upham represent the loss of innocence of war but he also symbolized the "Every-man". His illusion of neutrality faded when he finally had to pick and side and kill Steamboat Willie, his character revelation being how he finally understood the horrors of war. It became clear that Upham had turned into a hardened and true soldier because of the whole experience. Upham's rank was Tech 5 Corporal (E-5), that meant he was technician in a specialty area. His was maps and translator, he was not a combat infantryman and was never trained for front-line duty. Gunnery Sergent Hartman explained it this way in the movie Full Metal Jacket: "It is your killer instinct which must be harnessed if you expect to survive in combat. Your rifle is only a tool. It is a hard heart that kills. If your killer instincts are not clean and strong you will hesitate at the moment of truth. You will not kill. "The way the next of kin was notified of their loved one was killed in action during WW II was by Western Union telegram delivered by a bicycle riding messenger. If you were being notified of multiple deaths as was the case in this film, notification was done in-person by a military officer, usually from the same branch of service as the deceased when possible. That's why the mother upon seeing the officer exit the car momentarily froze knowing that meant at least 2 of her boys were either KIA or MIA, as the priest exits the car, she staggers and completely collapsed. Unfortunately, you didn't include that in your video presentation. That is one of the most important scenes in the movie. The mother speaks no lines in the movie, yet her breakdown brought a flood of tears form movie goers in theaters across the nation. Another important scene is it is clear from the few lines Ryan's wife speaks that she has never heard the name of Capt. John Miller, this means John has never spoken to her about what happened that day in Ramelle. What many missed is listening to Ryan speaking at the Miller's grave of how he thought about what those 8 men did for him every day was not guilt, but commitment. There are units assigned to recover, bury and mark graves. Usually these were temporary battlefield cemeteries. As hostilities moved farther away, a more permanent site would be selected, at the family's request, whenever possible, the remains would be returned to the United States. At the Normandy Cemetery Visitors Center, you'll find the following inscription: IF EVER PROOF WERE NEEDED THAT WE FOUGHT FOR A CAUSE AND NOT FOR CONQUEST, IT COULD BE FOUND IN THESE CEMETERIES. HERE WAS OUR ONLY CONQUEST: ALL WE ASKED … WAS ENOUGH … SOIL IN WHICH TO BURY OUR GALLANT DEAD.General Mark W. ClarkChairman, American Battle Monuments Commission, 1969-1984

1. Many WWII vets left the theaters because the D-Day battle scenes were so realistic. 2. The German Captain Miller was talked into letting go is the same one that killed him. Upham finally puts him down. 3. The story Ryan tells Miller about the last time he saw his brothers was made up by Matt Damon. He was told to say something interesting, so he did, and it was kept in the movie. 4. There really was a USS Sullivans(DD 68) dedicated to the brothers lost on one ship. That's why all brother soldiers/sailors from one family can't be assigned to the same command. 5. I did 24 years in the US Navy. I'm pretty sure the man Miller grabbed on the beach was whole and alive when he started dragging him, then he got knocked down by a grenade blast that blew that man in half. The medic crying for his mama when he died is the one who used to pretend to be asleep when she came home early so he wouldn't have to talk to her. Upham saw "Steamboat Willie" shoot Capt. Miller. That's why he shot him but let the others go. At the beginning & end, the number of children and grandchildren Ryan had with him at the cemetery was equal to the number of men who died to bring him home. Executive Mansion, Washington, Nov. 21, 1864. Dear Madam,-- I have been shown in the files of the War Department a statement of the Adjutant General of Massachusetts that you are the mother of five sons who have died gloriously on the field of battle. I feel how weak and fruitless must be any word of mine which should attempt to beguile you from the grief of a loss so overwhelming. But I cannot refrain from tendering you the consolation that may be found in the thanks of the Republic they died to save. I pray that our Heavenly Father may assuage the anguish of your bereavement, and leave you only the cherished memory of the loved and lost, and the solemn pride that must be yours to have laid so costly a sacrifice upon the altar of freedom. To be fair to Upham, the other Americans were Paratroopers and Rangers, the best and most highly trained light infantry in the world, who had been grinding for 2 years in the most severe programs of the US Army. Brutally difficult physical hardening, constant weapons firing and exposure to exhaustion and intimidation. In "Band of Brothers" they show the men crawling through ditches filled with cow and sheep entrails to inure them to blood and guts. Upham had been to an 8 week Basic Training, and then lived basically as a civilian clerk-typist the rest of the time.

If you are an American of African decent. Check out the Harlem Hell Fighters. An all Black unit that fought in WW1. Another unit to check out is the 761st Tank Battalion. It was an all Black tank unit in WW2.

Quite a few men drowned. The reason they throwing up was due to sea sickness. The Navy gove them a breakfast of sausage and eggs then the Higgins boats circled waiting for their turn to head in. The men that weren't sea sick probably did eat breakfast. I wish someone would watch the first time Red Tails, Gettysburg, and Glory.

The irony is that, if Steamboat Willie had not shot Miller, Miller would have blown the bridge, This would have made it impossible for the reinforcements to drive the Germans back.

I just wanna say, you are such a beautiful woman and you have a kind gentle heart. As a man who has been in the Army, I cry at this scene almost every single time because it is so real and because I know what it's like putting your life at risk at the orders of higher ups that wouldn't do the same for us. I thank God I was never in combat this bad, I would be utterly traumatized like these young men were. But I hope you stay the beautiful sensitive black woman you are. I hope you keep crying at scenes like these. I hope you keep your empathy and feelings for other people. Most of all I hope I can meet you someday. I would definitely love to hang out with someone like you. :) Stay true to yourself - be kind-hearted. The world needs more people like you...

Opinions on Upham are divided. Some viewers - especially those who recognize the German soldier he saved after Wade's death, blame him for his inaction, and getting Capt Miller shot. Others point out that this was his first combat, and it was a very intense one; he couldn't help being overwhelmed.

My father was part of the second wave that day. He was 22 years old. He never, ever talked about what he saw. He drank himself to death instead. Before that, when I returned from Viet Nam, my dad said that now we both had that haunted look in our eyes. He was a good man. I think I’ll be seeing him soon.

War is horrible. This movie does an excellent job of communicating that while honouring those who had to fight. Hopefully we can learn to not have them. Though as someone who has transported Ukrainian refugees, I can't see that happening any time soon.

You`re a Beautiful Soul India, Glad you watched it, more people of today should learn of the history, of the men that fought and died for our freedoms. Never let anyone take your freedom..its been bought and paid for in the Blood and lives of our parents and grandparents..And still to this day there is always some politician wanting to start a war...and the people have to fight it for them..

U should go on here and watch two videos. The story of our national anthem, and the story of Roy Benevides... maybe the greatest soldier ever lived! I met him once in the early 90s, when I was in the 82nd.

8:42 yeah I'm not a mother (and never will be, I'm a man) but I can only imagine what it would feel like to be told you don't have any kids anymore, since the 4th one is MIA and you'll probably work up worst case scenarios in your mind that he's dead too.
