Gald you guys loved it. That ending has to be one of the most satisfying and rewarding endings in film history, especially after all of the heartache the film puts you and these characters through. Such a timeless classic. It's often revered as one of the greatest films of all time nowadays and it's definitely earned that label
As satisfying as it is to see them reunited on the beach, I feel like the ending would have been better if it stopped when Red was on the bus, saying all the “I hope…” things. Just dialogue-wise, it makes sense to leave it there. Hope is a good thing. But I also understand the Hollywood aspect.
One of my favorite movies, and one of the best endings I've ever seen. To me, Andy's most impressive achievement is this: shortly after he was imprisoned, he started working on his escape attempt. He spent 19 years falsely imprisoned, enduring brutal conditions, helping his fellow inmates, enabling the warden's scams, etc. He planned his escape, changed it, refined it, and finally executed it flawlessly, getting the perfect revenge on top of it, and getting away scot free. And in all those 19 years, he never said a single word or even hinted at his plan to anyone, not even to Red. Thanks for the reaction and the video.
This is a perfect movie for me. There's not even a single slight detail I'd change. Perfect pacing and story structure. A rollercoaster of emotion with the ultimate feelgood ending.
There is only ONE thing i would change. When the guard goes into Andy's cell when the viewer thinks Andy may have killed himself, the guard looks around too much. He gives away the fact that Andy isn't there.
Brooks makes me cry everytime, and the scene when you don't know if Andy is still alive always gives me chills not to mention the narration of the great Morgan Freeman! Great movie guys and great reaction!!!👍
One of my dad's favorite movies. He used to quote this line all the time, as he outlived all of his closest friends. My dad has passed too now, so this line resonates with me even more now.
To be fair to them, they were actually exactly right as far as the book goes. In the book, the warden bribes him and moves him to a low security prison.
What really struck me is when Brooks went into prison there were practically no cars and a much slower pace of life. The shock of his reality when he got out must have been overwhelming, which in turn prompted his suicide.
Same here. Just imagine the changes that happened in the world from '05 to the fifties. 2 world wars, the Great Depression, the rise of communism, the advent of cars and the bomb. Like landing on an alien world where all you have in common is the language.
My favorite moment was when Andy negotiated for beers for all of his fellow inmates. I think that scene really summed up the essence of Andy. And, Red, in his wisdom, said he thought Andy just wanted to feel normal with that gesture. 💙🎥
I've seen this movie so many times. Brooks part still makes me cry along with the ending. The reveal of the poster and the reveal of the new identity at the bank still make my jaw drop. Every time. What a masterpiece
I remember seeing this in the theater and when you finally see the hole revealed people literally jumped out of their seats cheering...it was like being at a sporting event....to this day it was the most visceral reaction I have ever had, or been a part of during a movie....I've watched this movie at least 50x, and I still cry from the moment Red gets on that bus through meeting Andy on the beach.....
You don't know how fun it was to watch your reactions to one of the greatest movies ive ever seen. Better believe I was right there with you. Thank you guys, a definite new subscriber!
Idk if y'all could tell, but the cop that shot the kid in the courtyard is played by Clancy Brown. You might better know him as the voice of Mr. Krabs from SpongeBob. I'm not making that up....
That was a great reaction guys. Enjoyed watching you react to a masterpiece. A beautiful story of hope and friendship so masterfully crafted and acted. Just superb. Glad y'all got to enjoy this one. Have a great week !
you guys honestly make me feel like I’m watching movies for the first time all over again, love your videos thank you for your content from Australia 🇦🇺
One of the best movies you guys reacted to, I really enjoyed your commentary and reaction to the scenes you showed as they were some of the most iconic parts of this movie :))
The only thing I found slightly disappointing in this film is that the warden's suicide means he gets an easy out. On the other hand, it fits with his character.
It is absolutely one of my favorite movies as well. One of my favorite things is Morgan Freeman's performance . A subtle example is when he was first rejected for parole , when he was walking back up to the yard, he paused to put his cap back on. He began to walk up the steps. It was as if he was putting his armor back on with each step. By the time he was at the top step he was in full swagger mode.
This movie is a homage to the patient and persistent. When you know your road you don't have to move quickly, only steadily. Since you mentioned it, I find it very meaningful how the parole board members don't release Red until they could be sure that his spirit was broken or that he had become comfortable with staying in prison. As long as he had the hope of returning to a somewhat normal life, they assumed he had not learned his lesson. It is like they wanted to punish these people one last time.
Frankly, I'm not necessarily sure that this is the best interpretation of that scene. It's not that the parole board wanted to punish him, it's that they wanted an honest statement on Red's perception of himself. It's made pretty clear by the first two parole meetings that the response Red is giving is based purely on what he thinks the parole board wants to hear. A canned response, one he can repeat word-for-word ten years later. It's not honest whatsoever, there's no actual sense of rehabilitation there. Bigger even, there's no remorse, no self-reflection. The third and final meeting is where that pattern changes. His speech feels genuine, serious, and entirely up-front in its nature. No bullshit, no pandering, just a straight-up statement of self-reflection. The board can tell that he's not just spewing, he's genuinely serious about his own rehabilitation, so they let him go. While your perspective isn't necessarily wrong (that's the nature of art), it feels all too dark for how the ending of this movie plays out.
"Green Mile" comes after this one (another Frank Darabont movie based on a Stephen King book)..... Hope you two have a good pair of handkerchiefs, cause you're going to need them.....
You should watch “The Count of Monte Cristo” from 2002. They mentioned this book in this movie, in the library. Written by Alexander Dumas. The 2002 movie version starring Jim Caviezel is also a prison break movie. One of my faves. HIGHLY underrated. Jealousy, revenge, redemption, cunning and a lil romance all in one :))
You should watch "The Green Mile" (with Tom Hanks). This movie (and Shawshank) was also directed by Frank Darabont. These 2 movies are usually coupled together by reactors.
This was the film that started Morgan Freeman's phenomenal voice narration in films. The original ending didn't have them meeting again, it ended on the shot of the pacific ocean, test audiences hated the two old friends not meeting up again and the ending was changed to the one we see now.
Good thing they changed the ending. You can leave a reader with just the hope of the two friends reuniting, but you can’t leave a movie audience hanging like that.
Such a lovely and empathetic reaction to this great film...I can tell you both have big hearts. If you happen to be interested in checking out some great (older) classic movies, here's a short list of recommendations that I think you might like: To Kill a Mockingbird (1962), Casablanca (1942), 12 Angry Men (1957), Rocky (1976), Rear window (1954), and North by Northwest (1958).
Shawshank is literally the greatest movie ever made. IMDB scores it as 9.3 which is higher than The Godfather and it shows. The entire cast delivered exceptional performances, the music was perfect, the story was totally captivating and the ending was so satisfying you can't help but take a deep breath after viewing this masterpiece. I recommend watching more prison movies like Escape From Alcatraz, Cool Hand Luke, Brawl in Cell Block 99, Felon and Papillon. Great reaction guys, keep going.
Loved your reactions which reminded me of how I reacted the first time I saw it. This is easily top three for me between .. this, back to the future, and forrest gump. Another "fantastic" movie that has similar emotions as Shawshank is the movie "The Pianist". I highly recommend it and it is not what you might expect based on the title. Trust me .. really worthwhile, memorable movie. Keep it up guys.
The prison is a museum now. Ohio State Reformatory. It is such a cool place to visit with all its own history (as a real prison) and the movie scenes. Worth a visit. They even do haunted tours in October…
The funny thing about Red's "Maybe it's because I'm Irish" comment is that, in the novella from which this movie comes from, Red *is* white and *is* Irish. Which makes the movie-maker a damn GENIUS for giving Red that line in the movie when "Red" is Morgan Freeman!
Every now and then on a lazy Sunday I'd put this movie on and just get lost in the story. One of my all-time favorite movies. Glad you guys enjoyed it.
I, like many others, am a YT Reactor viewing addict of sorts, subscriber to nearly a dozen YT movie reactor channels and sampled 5 times that many, please allow me to declare that not only are you two EXCELLENT at this "niche" but your reaction to Shawshank is one of the best. I could go into details but will leave it up to future viewers to witness what I watched and am confident they will "get my meaning" so I'll end this comment with... THANK YOU BOTH SO VERY MUCH! God bless y"all & best of luck going forward
I had to laugh at her look of hope when the warden was talking to Tommy because he was just sitting next to her looking full of suspicion. I felt bad. You two felt his death pretty keenly. Great reaction!
It's no wonder it is still in consideration for the best movie of all time. Such an absolutely incredible piece of art. If you want to see another one of Frank Darabont's adaptations of a Stephen King book, I suggest "The Green Mile".
Those that do Shawshank are always advised to do "The Green Mile" next (and vise-versa) because both are Stephen King stories made into movies directed by Frank Darabont, and excellent. Definitely do The Green Mile soon and don't research it to avoid spoilers. ✌😎
This is such a satisfying movie . absolutely amazing performances 👏 from Tim Robbins and of course Morgan Freeman. I don't know how many times I've seen it .thanks for reacting to this great movie!😄 👍 much ❤ to you two keep it up guys!
I have watched more Shawshank reactions on this godforsaken website than I care to admit, but this was the best. Cheers to the two of you - you seem like a wonderful couple.
One of the best movies & best casts ever!!! Great reaction watching just how much you guys loved it!!!! Please check out Good Will Hunting, you’ll love it!!
This movie is damn near perfect. Easily top 5 material to me. Brooks makes me cry every time, he is such a sweet old man and deserved better! :( Another prison movie where I cried a river was The Green Mile. I highly recommend it if you have not seen it. And thank you for your genuine reactions as well, I really enjoyed the video! Kudos from Germany :)
I always thought the iconic scene right after andy crawled the 500 yards he probably should have been a little bit smeared with crap at that point.... - he just looks a little too clean
I am enjoying your reactions. A film I would like to recommend to watch is Arnold's Schwarzenegger "End of Days". It's one of his best work other than Terminator and other iconic films he's done.
I got to meet and spend some time with Bob Gunton (The Warden) in 2018. He’s one of the nicest and friendliest celebrities I’ve ever met but he plays villains so brilliantly. When he gave me an autograph he signed it: “Skye put your trust in the Lord. Your ass belongs to me.”
This is a top 5 movie. Think about this, in 1994, you had Forrest gump, Shawshank redemption, and pulp fiction all come out and vie for best movie. Forrest Gump swept most awards.
I have a suggestion for you good folks , check out the Riddick trilogy, 1 Pitch Black 2 The Chronicle’s of Riddick 3 Riddick thanks again. New subscriber ATB from Canada
The end is so satisfying. King allows his political beliefs to bleed into his stories. 40, 50 years in prison... Nah. You guys are great. Looking forward to the Green Mile.
Excellent reaction you two. I really do appreciate your raw emotions in these. My bit of useless trivia if it hasn't already been pointed out... During Red's parole hearings, the man in Red's mug shot is actually Morgan's son. His son also played the man in the laundry who slipped items in the prison for Red. Thank you for your channel. Your two of my top three movie reactors. You always keep in the best scenes that other reactors cut.
That was the best reaction I've seen to this movie... and I have seen a lot of them. You're a beautiful couple with beautiful energy. I'll be back. Thank you.
After watching your reaction to The Green Mile and you said that was the guy Shawshank Redemption, I had to come and see if you have this on your channel. Love watching your videos. This is a classic and definitely in my top 10 movies of all time. Just subbed. You guys are awesome.
That my friends is the proper response when they discover the tunnel. Mouth open and the brain suddenly realizes what just happened. It’s a pretty good surprise plot twist. I’m smiling right know because what you did was exactly what I did. Good movie.
That's so funny how you mentioned HOPE in the first 2 minutes! That's the theme of the movie. Personally, I don't really like the fairy tale ending. It was amazing to see them meet up on the beach but originally the movie ended with Red riding into the sunset on the bus. It's about hope. It should have ended like that and you just have to have hope that they met each other again.
The Rita Hayworth scene. I can only imagine the loneliness these men have, not seeing a real-life woman for a long time. Another highly rated movie is "Life is Beautiful" {1997) would love to see your reaction. It's in French with English subs if it's alright with you guys. Love your reactions btw, Thanks!
Yes. Life is beautiful could very easily be best the movie ever. I mean any other great movie can be as good, but man I don't think cinema can do much more to/for you than that movie.
Great reaction guys! :) We could all tell you enjoyed this movie. This movie is fantastic - great acting, great direction and cinematography. The Morgan Freeman 'Red', monologue at the end always gives me chills. The meeting on the beach, no words needed just a simple embrace, absolutely beautiful.
