He definitely was lobotomized at the end. He wanted everyone to think he fell back into his delusion so he could be remembered as Teddy. This is based on a novel by Dennis Lehane who also wrote the novel Mystic River. Love the reaction!

I think in the end he didn’t Revert back to his delusion. I think he was sane. Because he tells his doctor is it better to live as a monster or die is a good man. So I’m assuming by monster he means the man that killed his wife and couldn’t save his kids. So he’s kind of committing suicide. Edit: I wrote this right before you guys said it. So I agree with you guys lol

I really enjoyed the twist in this movie. I enjoyed it because they left hints, where some "mysteries" make it so the viewer would never suspect the twist, which is a bit cheap, like having it turn out that the perpetrator was a character that was never mentioned or seen etc. The two here did get close to the idea which was good but also the end made it so even if you were close there was still more to it, which is also a nice reward for those who are typically more perceptive in mysteries. Basically, the end represented that he couldn't live with himself anymore, so he lied because he knew his fate would free him of his past (and future in a sense).

A short little known or acknowledged history lesson. There were actual Americans who fought for nazi Germany. Some went back to Germany to fight for the fatherland. For me that was the biggest twist and the biggest shock. At the end he's cured, and he knows he is. He deliberately chooses the lobotomy. The doctors were so focused on curing him that they never considered what curing him would mean to him- a life spent in torment.

One thing I'll note is that that line is not in the novel this was adapted from (which I've read), so it implies a rather different interpretation of the ending. In the book, it seemed pretty straightforward that he truly regressed and wasn't faking it.

Maaaan, Mrs. Movies is Smart! She called it straightaway. This movie has some cool, haunting imagery. I don't know how realistic the story is, given how upsetting it would have been to the other patients and guards to have this guy running around, but I liked it! At the end, I think he's done remembering. It's too much for him, and he doesn't want to live with the things he's done or the things that have happened to him. I think he's ready for the lobotomy and probably hopes that they take out the worst of his memories.

What a movie! And what a reaction!! Glad you both enjoyed it. The music is mesmerizing. Aside from the melancholic piece by Max Richter, there’s a bunch of stuff by John Cage, avant-garde composer who did a lot of dissonant, unsettling pieces. Adds so much to the film Also, did I hear the Mrs. say she had been to Dachau? I went when I was in Munich, too. Such a heaviness in the air walking through. I think everyone should visit once (and that’s all you need) to really understand depths of human depravity and to never forget. But all around amazing movie! So glad to see you guys react to it! I remember going into it knowing essentially what was going on, but that ending with him becoming self-aware and choosing lobotomy over living with the knowledge that he'd killed his wife was just such a better twist than anything else in the movie. I had to watch this film in the theater twice to not only to get the full picture of the reveal but also pick up on things that I didn't pick up on the first time I saw it. I was so immersed subjectively as Leo's character that I felt what he felt when the revelation came. I felt as though the rug was pulled out from under me. "No one can erase all of man's memories." Was what Andrew said to the Rachel in the cave. My interpretation is that when he said "Which would be worse, to live as a monster or to die as a good man?" He was not delusional in that moment and conscious enough to know that he no longer wanted to live as the monster he felt he was who failed his children and put them in danger and also the monster who shot his wife dead for downing their children. The lobotomy I felt was the one thing that Would erase those memories. Yes physically he'd still be alive But he mentally he wouldn't have to live as that monster. He'd be gone. I believed the lobotomy was in fact his suicide. A way to stop that loop and put himself out of that misery of living in that loop of delusion from not being able to face the reality of his life. I know it was the lobotomy given that they showed an insert shot of the ice pick wrapped in the cloth that the orderly was carrying.

I’ll have to,go,back and watch it again. My take was that there was never a fire. That was just how he told himself in his head that his wife died instead of him killing her.

Thanks Cowboy, I remember recommending this one for the twist; bet she won't be able to crack the twist at the end of the Spice Girls movie though, but time will tell

Of anything, watch The Hateful Eight by Quentin Taratino. It uses the same ingredients as his debut 'Reservoir Dogs' by setting it on one location with a mystery plot. Top notch acting by a big cast.

epic acting by Leonardo. Sad that he is a rich hypocritical liberal in real life, who keeps talking about saving the planet, while flying around with his private jet, that pollutes more in one flight that a small town in an entire year..

I'm so glad I found you guys. From November to January I lost 2 sisters and I've really had a hard time copying. If it wasn't for Jesus I guess I'd be in a straight jacket. But there are times when I know need a dose of you two. I really can't explain it but you guys somehow calm me. I'm sorry to keep calling you, "you guys" but I don't know your names yet. I just really enjoy your senses of humor and your obvious love for one another is beautiful. We never know the good we may having on someone so thank you for the good you have on me in a very difficult time in my life. I've seen Shutter Island several times and it never gets boring. As far as poor Andrew goes, I feel like he felt responsible for the deaths of his children which then led him to murder his wife and he just couldn't live with guilt the rest of his life. So he chose to be lobotomized. Very sad.

Glad we can help get you through some rough times, Kat. Sorry for your losses. As for what you can call us, our go to is simply Mrs. Movies and Mr. Movies. You'll see the Mrs will sometimes comment with her Mrs. Movies account in that regard. 🤠

8:07 Mrs. Movies says this, but she figures out the twist in every movie ever. Don't sell yourself short, ma'am.

OK, so these guys are definitely trying to pull the wool over our eyes. I have a masters degree in statistics from Rice University. I started watching this channel a few weeks ago and found it incredibly entertaining until very recently. But at this point, I don't believe that any of their reactions are real but are instead clearly fabricated. I've seen this lady accurately guess the plot twist of like 80% of the movies that they have watched thus far with uncanny precision. This approaches the level of being struck by lightning more than once over the course of ones lifetime while still surviving to live another day to tell the tale. This is a complete farce and this channel should be ashamed for trying to pull this crap in this day and age.

FYI i say in that way, Back in 1992, i watched this on a 5 inch blackj and white tv, it was called Ghostwatch, it was on the BBC and banned after.....Might be worth looking up.
