"Lord" Vader is a dark lord of the Sith, a type of space-wizard who uses "The Force" (space magic) for evil. The Jedi were also space-wizards who use "The Force" for good. The Jedi were hunted to near extinction by the Empire.

"I love these two, I wonder if that's common consensus"; yes, the bickering Odd Couple friendship between R2 and 3PO is one of the most beloved aspects of the franchise, and one of the most solid friendships in all of popular fiction.

_A long time ago, in a movie theater about 50 miles away ..._ *THERE WAS NO EPISODE TITLE* The studio didn't think this film would make much money. Lucas was crossing his fingers that it didn't bomb. For all he knew, Lucas was making one standalone movie. "Episode IV" and "A New Hope" were added in later releases, to be in line with the numbering adopted with Episode V. I first saw _Star Wars_ in 1977, at the Indian Hills Theater in Omaha, Nebraska, US (a city of about 1M). The Indian Hills was one of the last remaining Cinerama theaters in existence (it's long gone, now). Cinerama was an experimental widescreen format seen in the 1950s and 1960s. It had an extremely curved screen, such that films shot in Cinerama used _three cameras_ and _three projectors_ : one for the center of the screen and one for each side. Everything had to be constantly synchronized so that the film looked normal onscreen. If you see Cinerama films on DVD/Bluray/streaming today, it often looks distorted on the left and right. This is caused by converting a curved film to a flat screen. So there I was at the Indian Hills at the tender age of 12 -- the film's precise target demographic. The Indian Hills seated 810 patrons: 662 on the main floor and 148 in the balcony. It was completely packed, as was every screening of _Star Wars_ until the film left theaters I'd gotten to the theater rather late, forcing me to sit in the center seat of row one. This turned out to be fantastically good bad luck. Today, the center of row one is a terrible seat due to parallax distortion. In a theater the size of the Indian Hills, that distortion didn't exist because the screen was far enough away from the seats. However, it was close enough so that it filled my field of view from top to bottom. The screen was large and curved enough so that it filled my field of view from periphery to periphery. _Star Wars_ was shot in CinemaScope, a more popular experimental widescreen format of the era. While not technically the same as Cinerama, it still lent itself well to that screen. I watched _Star Wars_ with the film filling my entire field of view from top-to-bottom and side-to-side. I didn't have to turn my head to watch it unless I wanted to, and I usually didn't. It was an astonishingly immersive experience. Not even IMAX comes close. Add to that the massive audience reaction that shouldn't be overlooked. It was a shared experience that I've only seen at _Infinity War_ and _Endgame_ on their opening nights, when there were a lot of fans present. This audience reaction happened at every screening, in every theater, everywhere in the world, until _Star Wars_ left the screens. Imagine 810 people all cheering, clapping, jumping to their feet, and occasionally crying all at once. The shared experience was amazing, as it fed on itself. No one held back, it just kept growing and growing until the destruction of the Death Star -- which prompted massive roaring from the audience. The film itself was like nothing put to the screen at that time. While cinematically based on old _Flash Gordon_ and _Buck Rogers_ movie serials of the 1930s, this was a big-budget, big-screen version like nothing anyone had ever seen before. It completely changed science fiction on the movie screen. Until that time, you occasionally got a good science fiction film, but they tended to be years apart. After _Star Wars_ , there were multiple good science fiction movies every year, a trend that continues to this very day. There would be no modern _Star Trek_ without _Star Wars_ . _Star Wars_ was such a massive hit for 20th Century-Fox that Paramount quickly looked around and said, "Aha! We have this _Star Trek_ thing that Trekkies are always saying they want more of. Let's make it into a movie!" Thus _Star Trek - The Motion Picture_ was released in 1979. Without that, there would be no _Star Trek_ today. _Star Wars_ changed filmmaking from a business perspective. The film grabbed audiences like nothing seen in the entire history of cinema. While _Jaws_ was technically the first summer blockbuster, _Star Wars_ cemented summer as the time to release action-heavy, family-friendly films. The special effects of _Star Wars_ were utterly innovative, and the tools created by the likes of John Dykstra became commonplace in films that don't even have special effects. Almost all special effects in the Original Trilogy were achieved either in-camera, with optical effects, miniatures, extremely detailed paintings, or a combination of those techniques. CGI that allows an entire film to be shot on a green screen wasn't even a glimmer in anyone's eye. In 1977, the most advanced computers were the size of an SUV and didn't have the computing power of your phone. CGI as a primary filmmaking technique wasn't popularized until _Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow_ in 2004. By then, computing power/square centimeter had skyrocketed exponentially. The special effects spawned Industrial Light and Magic, a company created and owned by George Lucas. ILM is still in existence today, constantly innovating with new technologies to create visual effects for many, many films and TV series. From it's inception, ILM has been considered the gold standard of VFX companies. In short, this film was nothing like what had come before. It changed _everything about cinema_ . And I got to see it with an audience of 810 on a screen so immersive that I got nauseous during the Trench Run.

I always love the prequels no matter what. Even though Return Of The Jedi is my most favourite Star Wars film of all time and always will be, my second most favourite Star Wars film of all time is The Phantom Menace. The prequels were ahead of their time and they remain ahead of their time even today. They embraced topics like the Hegelian dialectic and false-flag attacks that continue to go over the heads of most people. I didn't hate the politics of the prequels as a kid, but I didn't understand it and therefore didn't care for it. Now that I'm much older and have more of an understanding of politics, I appreciate the politics a lot more. I love the fact that Star Wars has always been a story about two conflicts existing simultaneously, a political conflict between liberty (represented by an idealised version of the Republic) and tyranny (represented by the Empire) and a greater spiritual conflict between the Light Side of the Force (represented by the Jedi) and the Dark Side of the Force (represented by the Sith) with some overlap between the two conflicts. The prequels were also warning us of increasingly totalitarian governments in the future here in the real world and the very real possibility of people accepting those increasingly totalitarian governments 'with thunderous applause' (in the words of Padme). Like I said, the prequels were ahead of their time. They gave us a glimpse of OUR future.

It's so cool to think about the different perspectives of Star Wars depending on when you grow up. I was born in 1997 and we watched the original trilogy on VHS all the time. The prequels came out during my childhood. From my perspective, the originals were set in stone as the baseline for the franchise, and the prequels were fun new additions. As an adult I recognize they do have weird awkward dialogue and some cringey direction but on paper I feel strongly the actual story of Palpatine's rise and the fall of the Jedi is brilliant. If a better writer could adjust the dialogue to sound more natural, and if the CGI could be toned down, I think the prequels would be excellent films. My parents were born in 1961 & 1962 and my mom definitely saw all of the films in theaters. I always wondered what that was like seeing The Star Wars in 1977 in that time in history. To me, Star Wars is the 6 films George directly worked on. It's a complete story. The sequels are just high-budget fanfictions to me that I don't consider canon.

This really just shows how universal Star Wars has implanted itself into our psyches. You haven't seen the movies before, and yet you're familiar with so many of the characters, images, and the lore. I think it's pretty impossible for anyone to be completely unaware of it - even if they have never watched the movies through. By now you realized, I'm sure, that Darth Vadar doesn't say the "Luke, I am your father" line in this movie - and, he doesn't actually say it in any of them (it is a common misquote). I had the immense privilege of experiencing this movie when it first released and without truly knowing anything about it. I remember being completely mesmerized by it, and it is still a fun (if somewhat nostalgic) romp through space.

In 1977 I was 12 when A New Hope came out. My father took my sister and I to one of the theaters in Albuquerque. Thankfully, we got there early. You could hear everyone talking in anticipation, the excitement in the air, the anticipation was very exciting. We were in front of the theater, not first, maybe in the first group of 10, but by the time they opened the doors, the line wrapped around the theater 3 times. Thankfully, they only let 10 in at a time. We're in the theater, the lights went down, a really loud organ starts playing and you see the THX logo come up, fade to black, and then the iconic Star Wars starts playing, John Williams is a genius, wonderful soundtrack for episode's 4-6, we didn't know what we were in for, but George Lucas was a genius for starting in the middle with episode 4 and ending with episode 6. We had a ton of questions after episode 4, even more in episode 5, episode 6 was the end. Episodes 1-3 helps you understand the backstories, very shiny and flashy, but I like practical effects. When A New Hope was was over I was very excited, but had to wait till 1980 for Episode 5. I'm excited to see your reaction to this iconic trilogy! Have fun!

You said you were a watcher of fantasy not sci-fi, well I’d argue that Star Wars is a fantasy story in a sci fi setting. It has a farm boy, a princess, a dark knight, a wizard, a rogue and the droids could be halflings or some other kind of magical creature. George Lucas was open about his love of Akira Kurosawa’s films and he doesn’t try to hide that Star Wars is his love letter to The Hidden Fortress. In many ways it’s Star Wars with Samurai. Check it out sometime, it’s really fascinating to see the film that Lucas was emulating.

It was previously something I wanted to do however took up a lot of time and was a tad stressful so decided to just stick with my gaming channel. Unsure of whether I am going to react to the other Star Wars (still haven't seen them yet) as mentioned in this video. Thought I would upload this here however as I recently found the file again and since I am still playing Mass Effect, Star Wars is quite the appropriate movie to watch! "The Force will be with you, always." Fun Fact: The first movie to make over $300 million domestic box office. It was also the first movie to cross $500 million worldwide in its initial release. Action Star Fact: Stunt doubles were not used for the scene where Luke and Leia swing to safety in the Death Star. Mark Hamill and Carrie Fisher performed the stunt, shooting it in just one take. CGI Over Practical Fact: All the CGI was added in the late 90s and NOT part of the original release. I don't mind the changes, except for originally Han Solo (Harrison Ford) shot Greedo (Paul Blake) before the bounty hunter could do anything. Gun Enthusiast Fact: The weapons the stormtroopers used were essentially the Sterling L2A3 9mm SMG (sub-machine gun), a military weapon developed in the late 1940s in the U.K. and adopted by the British and Canadian Armies in the 1950s. The curved left entry side mounted magazine was removed, and that was as much as it was modified for the movie. The longer sandtrooper weapon was the MG-34 machine gun from Germany. Location Location Fact: The Tatooine scenes were filmed in Tunisia. There is a town in Tunisia's rural south named Tataouine (Berber for "eyes") and George Lucas liked the name so much, he adopted it for Luke Skywalker's (Mark Hamill) home world. Some of the interiors and the courtyard of Luke's house were filmed in a hotel in Matmata, Tunisia. One can visit this two-star hotel and see some pictures and the painted ceiling of what was used for the Lars' dining room. When Luke goes out of the farm, he appears in a flat deserted area, while the reality, when you get out of the hotel, there are a lot of other houses, small stone hills, and a lot of prickly pear cacti (a variety very common in Tunisia). The skeleton that C-3PO (Anthony Daniels) passes belongs to a Tatooine creature called a Greater Krayt Dragon. This artificial skeleton was left in the Tunisian desert after filming and still lies there. During filming of Star Wars: Episode II - Attack Of The Clones (2002), the site was visited by the crew once more and the skeleton was still there.

"I was always a fantasy child". Star Wars is a fantasy - not Sci-fi. It literally begins "A long time ago, in a land (galaxy) far far away..." just like a classic fantasy tale. Even the overall story is a straight up fantasy cliche. A young farm boy, with the help of an old mentor, takes up his father's magic sword and goes on an epic journey, upon his white steed (Millennium Falcon), to rescue a princess locked away in a black fortress (Death Star) who is guarded by an evil wizard (Darth Vader).

It's good you are intrigued by Darth Vader, as the prequels essentially tell his complete story, as well as how the Republic falls victim to an evil Emperor, But first follow this part of the timeline. Oh and the "space battle" looks so realistic because George Lucas studied all manner of actual gun camera footage from WW2 fighter planes to get a proper sense of the scenes and relationships of aerial battles. He was incredibly detail oriented and it is said he had binders full of notes on each and every species and character in the whole saga....

I've never watched a reaction video but having enjoyed your Mass Effect ...reactions... I've gotta see this. Was six when I experienced Star Wars in 1977 after three hours standing in late night lineup that more than circled the block. After _Jaws_ , Star Wars cemented the term "blockbuster". My friend shook six-year-old me awake during the climactic trench scene; I rooted for the cool guy in the tie fighter! But a few years later with the first home VHS machines it was pretty common for the salesperson to throw in a "Han Solo" (pirate) copy of Star Wars to demonstrate _the true power of the VHS_ . So my generation was swimming in it.

@@LolaMGames Yes, please watch everything. Also, you don't have to watch it all in release order. Some of the purists in SW fandom get a little gatekeepery about the order. The truth is there is no right or wrong way, although the vast majority of us do recommend starting with Ep. 4: ANH. You've probably seen mentions of the Machete Order and maybe the Flashback Order and of course there is Chronological Order. Machete Order is 4, 5, 2, 3, 6. It cuts out 1 because some fans hate a character in that movie and feel most of the movie is unnecessary. Please understand, the fandom has been split so many times over the years, usually when a new movie or show comes out. There are a lot of haters who think they are the biggest fans, but they are a minority with a very loud voice. Their videos usually show up in the recommended feed, UNFORTUNATELY. Anyway, so one disgruntled fan came up with Machete Order. But a better order that includes Ep. 1 is Flashback Order. It's basically the same thing but can be modified to include TV shows and animated shows, or the stand alone movies. You start with 4, then 5, then Flashback to the Prequels 1-3, then finish with 6, before moving on to other stuff. You could add in the Clone Wars animated show, the Obi-Wan Kenobi show, the Han Solo movie or any number of shows and movies. I do highly recommend the Flashback Order because you get to choose what to watch and when, depending on your time. If you're patient, you could watch it all. But if you just want to finish all the films first before checking out the shows, then that's fine too. One thing Release Order purists forget is that most of us have watched these movies dozens and dozens of times. We have them memorized. New people don't have that experience. They're taking it all in at once, watching everything one time, technically twice as you edit your video. It's simply not the same experience: one time versus dozens. As each movie came out, we had already seen the previous movies dozens of times. Okay, so I'm going to give you 3 lists. One is the films only. The second is all live action stuff. The third is everything. All will be in Flashback Order. FILMS ONLY Ep. 4: A New Hope Ep. 5: Empire Strikes Back Ep. 1: The Phantom Menace Ep. 2: Attack of the Clones Ep. 3: Revenge of the Sith Solo: A SW Story Rogue One: A SW Story Ep. 4: ANH (again, just to refresh your memory and see how it all adds up) Ep. 5: ESB (again, ditto) Ep. 6: Return of the Jedi Ep. 7: The Force Awakens Ep. 8: The Last Jedi Ep. 9: The Rise of Skywalker ALL LIVE ACTION FILMS AND SHOWS Ep. 4: A New Hope Ep. 5: Empire Strikes Back Ep. 1: The Phantom Menace Ep. 2: Attack of the Clones Ep. 3: Revenge of the Sith Solo: A SW Story Obi-Wan Kenobi series Andor Season 1 Rogue One: A SW Story Ep. 4: ANH (again, just to refresh your memory and see how it all adds up) Ep. 5: ESB (again, ditto) Ep. 6: Return of the Jedi The Mandalorian series Seasons 1-2 Book of Boba Fett series The Mandalorian Season 3 Ahsoka Season 1 Skeleton Crew series Season 1 (comes out later this year, or sometime next year) Ep. 7: The Force Awakens Ep. 8: The Last Jedi Ep. 9: The Rise of Skywalker The Acolyte series (Takes place around 100 years before Ep. 1: TPM. 1st season ends in mid-July. This can be watched any time after you've seen the first 6 movies, even though it takes place 100 years before.) ALL FILMS AND SHOWS Ep. 4: A New Hope Ep. 5: Empire Strikes Back Ep. 1: The Phantom Menace Tales of the Jedi animated series (episodes 2-4 about Count Dooku) (You could save this for until you've finished the Prequel Trilogy) Ep. 2: Attack of the Clones The Clone Wars animated movie The Clone Wars animated series Seasons 1-7 (you could save the last 4 episodes of S7 for after Ep. 3: RotS since they take place before, during, and after the film) Ep. 3: Revenge of the Sith The Bad Batch animated series Seasons 1-3 Tales of the Jedi animated series (episodes 1, 5 & 6 about Ahsoka) Tales of the Empire animated series (episodes 4-6 about Bariss Offee; save the Morgan Elsbeth episodes until later in the timeline) Solo: A SW Story Obi-Wan Kenobi series The Rebels animated series Seasons 1-4 Andor Season 1 Rogue One: A SW Story Ep. 4: ANH (again, to refresh your memory and see how it all adds up) Ep. 5: ESB (again, ditto) Ep. 6: Return of the Jedi The Mandalorian series Seasons 1-2 Book of Boba Fett series The Mandalorian Season 3 Tales of the Empire animated series (episodes 1-3 about Morgan Elsbeth who plays a prominent role in the Ahsoka series; takes place earlier in the timeline but for now it makes sense to watch these here, or you can watch them after Ahsoka) Ahsoka Season 1 Skeleton Crew series Season 1 (comes out later this year, or sometime next year) Ep. 7: The Force Awakens Ep. 8: The Last Jedi Resistance animated series Seasons 1-2 Ep. 9: The Rise of Skywalker The Acolyte series (Takes place around 100 years before Ep. 1: TPM. 1st season ends in mid-July. This can be watched any time after you've seen the first 6 movies, even though it takes place 100 years before.) I hope none of this seems too complicated. It's meant to be a guide. Whatever you decide, enjoy the ride, and may the force be with you!!

Luke turned off the targeting computer, because unlike the squadron Leader he understood that he couldn’t rely on technology to destroy the Death Star. Luke could only rely on the force. Something Vader foreshadowed back in the conference room scene. “Don’t be too proud of this technological terror you constructed. The ability to destroy a planet is insignificant next to the power of the Force.”

1. Sir. Alec Guinness/Obi-Wan didn't want the part. Being a Shakespearian actor, he thought the entire idea was silly and was beneath him, but his wife talked him into taking the part. 2. The shrug Chewy gives Luke after he scares the tiny black droid is 🤣 3. These movies were put out in a certain order because there was limited technology and Lucas used and pushed forward the images needed to make a quality product. The best way to watch the is in the order they came out. We had to wait years for the next one. There was no internet where we had access to them whenever we wanted. 4. Aside from doing this for a living, there's no need to go into anything after the original six Lucas episodes. Disney took over and the quality dropped. I realize you have to. 5. The only CGI was put in for the 25th anniversary package in this film are the critters the stormtroopers were riding at the beginning of the search for the robots, a couple of the huge critters outside the pub, the scene with Jabba the Hutt and other minor changes. Those were put in later after CGI was available. Otherwise, everything is what we had in 1977. 6. Obi-Wan sacrificed himself after he told Vader he would be stronger than ever. He went back into the force. He knows it's Luke's job to take over. 7. The awkwardness in the detention space is because Ford didn't know his lines. It was kept in the movie anyway because it worked. 8. IMVHO the next two are the best of the series. Enjoy

One hung people say about Ben not knowing R2….. droids in this universe were a dime a dozen. They are tools just like a hammer or a toothbrush. If someone gave you a toothpick you used 20 years ago, would you recognize it? In this galaxy droids se commonplace. To us R2 is unique. To them he is a trash can in wheels. Also in a bar, they would take up space that a paying consumer of beverages could be seated instead. In the entire series I only know Skywalker to treat droids as companions.

The prequels go into the politics of it all in much more detail. Lots of people didn't like it but I found it all pretty interesting. As for the viewing order, there are lots of different schools of thought but I wouldn't sweat it too much as long as you watch each trilogy in release order. To say Mass Effect was influence by Star Wars, is like saying Star Wars was influence by Dune. Star Wars came into being because George Lucas couldn't secure the rights to Dune to make a movie. With Mass Effect, EA was doing Knights of the Old Republic II and Lucas kept frustrating them by shooting down their ideas. This is why there is so much overlap between KOTOR, KOTOR II, SWTOR, and Mass Effect. Citadel Station, insect creatures that talk about their psychic "song", "psychic" warrior monks, etc. Play all those games and you will probably end up confusing some of the storyline later in life.

Before R2-D2 gets swept up into the vehicle, the Jawas install a restraining bolt on him. This makes him less independent. Droids are just pieces of gear, like.a toaster or a flashlight. A more enlightened people might realize that anything self aware, especially with emotions like many droids have are effectively “alive” and buying, selling, and capturing them, is just slavery. But it’s not viewed like this in Star Wars.

If it helps Lola, then you could consider "droids" as about functionally the same as slaves in Classical society. The parallel between the decline of Roman republic and the Republic in Star Was isn't really the quite same (I'd hardly compare the Emperor in Star Wars with Octavian!) but it has a few broad similarities - all explored in the prequel films.
