@@jonasroider are you SERIOUS?? That is NOT the way to watch the series! ONLY watch the way we all SAW them and how they were released. Episode IV, then V, then VI. Lucas had NO plans to write any more after that (meaning any prequels) It was years before he decided to come up with prequels, Episodes I, II and III If someone never saw any of them before, watching them from Episode I - VI there would be NO "mystery" no unexpected twists and turns, you would know everything before it happens and it would NEVER be as interesting or any "OH WOW!" moments. I am NOT giving ANY spoilers here because I KNOW that there are STILL people who have NOT watched the series.... ONLY WATCH THEM IN THE ORDER THEY WERE RELEASED ORIGINALLY!!

The plot points are so timeless too, even the ones about computers. "Use the force.... PASS!" and "He still gets the money too, right?" made me lmao. "So the force can also kill thousands of people?" was both good dark humor and a pretty deep and quick understanding.

😂Believe me, it's not. I only know Star Wars based off Episode 6 that I may have watched when I was about 7. Can't remember a thing except Ewoks(coz they're cute), Princess Leia(coz I know someone named Leia), the other 3 main male characters(which I don't know how they're connected), and then Natalie Portman became every boys' crush in my class after Episorde 1 came out.

While the story from 1977 is still there you were watching an updated version that inserted some extra scenes and fixed/updated a lot of the visuals so it does look a lot cleaner than the original. Star Wars Episode 4 was released in theaters in May of 1977. I was 10 years old at that time. The movie was a mega hit world wide and was ahead of its time in story and FX. The version you are watching is the 1997 remastered CGI version. Prior to that the FX was done with stop motion animation which was considered the best ever when the movie was first released. It won several Oscars because of it. Back in the day when a popular film like Star Wars were in theaters it was not uncommon for that same exact movie to be re-released again cinemas the following year. Star Wars was so popular that theaters would be packed year after year. Lines for the film would stretch several blocks long. Even people who had already seen it the first time went back time and time again to watch it. Then when the sequels came out it happened all over again. Back in 1997 the remastered CGI extended version of the film was released for the 20th anniversary of the film with extra deleted scenes added and theaters were packed yet again as if it were 1977 all over again. The place was so full of fans that even though there were many fans like my brother and I who had already see the movie in the 70s, the film still got a standing ovation just the same. It was still that good and well worth the watch. 🎞📽👍💖

The CG and such wasn't this good in the 1997 version... This was a later "update"... I forget exactly when, but whenever the Blu-Ray was released, I think... Maybe 2011 or something... There might have been an update between those... More CG stuff was added and they improved how CG Jabba looked... They improved the edit of Greedo shooting first... It was much more obviously edited before... I think the "Maclunkey" might have been added... Might be some other changes... I think Luke's speeder originally moved along the ground more, but was edited to make it look like it was in the air... I don't remember if they did that for the 97 one or the later version... It might have been "updated" again since then... I'm not sure...

Truth Serums do exist though. Any kind of "truth serum" is basically a mind altering drug. But their effect is not enough to stop a person from lying, but makes it significantly harder. For example sodium thiopental: It slows the speed at which your body sends messages from your spinal cord to your brain. As a result, it's more difficult to perform high-functioning tasks, such as concentrating on a single activity for example keeping up a lie.

When this came out, the only sci-fi we had seen was 50’s b movies with strings holding up ships while someone pelted them with wadded up aluminum “meteors “, and the original Star Trek series with its painted back drop sets and mini-skirts. To say we were mind blown when this came out is an understatement. I was 14 and I especially loved how everything was dirty and dinged up. It felt lived in and had a history. No strings or hokey dialog. I saw it 12 times that summer.

It's kind of nerdy and doesn't really impact the movie very much but I still have some information to share. The stormtrooper armor actually does help against the blaster fire. You'll notice that they fall down and looked dead but, according to lore, most regular blaster fire is actually dispersed throughout the armor and it ends up just stunning instead of killing. Han Solo's blaster is powerful as all get-out though and can penetrate the armor. So can Chewbacca's bowcaster.

1. Sir. Alec Guinness/Obi-Wan didn't want the part. Being a Shakespearian actor, he thought the entire idea was silly and was beneath him, but his wife talked him into taking the part. 2. The shrug Chewie gives Luke after he scares the tiny black droid is 🤪 3. These movies were put out in a certain order because there was limited technology and Lucas used and pushed forward the images needed to make a quality product. The best way to watch the is in the order they came out. We had to wait years for the next one. There was no internet where we had access to them whenever we wanted. 4. No need to go into anything after VI. Disney took over and the quality dropped. I realize you have to. 5. The only CGI was put in for the 25th anniversary package in this film are the critters the stormtroopers were riding at the beginning of the search for the robots, a couple of the huge critters outside the pub and the scene with Jabba the Hutt. Those were put in later after CGI was available. Otherwise, everything is what we had in 1977. 6. Obi-Wan sacrificed himself after he told Vader he would be stronger than ever. He went back into the force. He knows it's Luke's job to take over. 7. The awkwardness in the detention space is because Ford didn't know his lines. It was kept in the movie anyway because it worked. 8. The next two are the best of the original Landis story series. Enjoy

Droids are treated poorly at this point of the timeline because of the Clone Wars. They are pretty much slaves/servants at this point because they were the 'Bad Guys' during that conflict. Also, you are watching the Special Edition that was re-released in the 1990's. They upgraded a lot of the special effects at that time, and added a few extra scenes. Not to disparage the original version, which was far ahead of its time in 1977, but this received an upgrade 20 year later.

Welcome to the world of Star Wars. I will give some information for a better understanding of the universe. The Empire is a huge state that includes many planets and extends to most of the known galaxy, not counting some of the systems at the far edge. Initially, the empire was a constitutional monarchy, whose political affairs were governed not only by the emperor, but also by the senate, which includes a representative from each planet belonging to the empire, but after the creation of the Death Star, the senate was dissolved and power finally passed into the hands of the Emperor. Initially, the Empire was a galactic republic, but as a result of a series of events, the Lord of the Sith came to power, who proclaimed himself emperor (you will learn more about this in the prequels) Now about the structure of the Force, in this period of time, the two most powerful and well-known orders of forseusers are the Sith and the Jedi, they came from one ancient order of force users who served both its aspects - the Dark and the Light side. The dark and light side of the force are not the good and evil side, they represent two different currents of force and were named by members of the very first order in honor of the two moons that were satellites of the planet where this order was based, one was made of white stone, the other of black. This ancient order practiced a balance between the sides, the light one is more calm and creative, the dark one is more emotional and destructive. But over time, this order banned the study of the dark side of the force and focused on the light side, becoming the Jedi Order from the time. Once there was a split within the order and some members of the supreme Council were exiled to unknown regions of the galaxy because of the desire to study the dark side of the force. These fallen Jedi found the planet Korriban (or Morraband), where a humanoid undeveloped red-skinned race lived, which had a huge connection with the dark side. The fallen Jedi quickly subdued this race, which called itself the Sith, after which they named themselves the Sith Lords, creating a new order of force users, which was focused only on the dark side. With the passage of time, several major wars occurred between the newly created Sith Empire and the Old Republic, which included the Jedi as guardians of peace and justice. As a result, the Sith were almost destroyed several times, losing wars due to constant betrayals and internecine power struggles. But then a Sith lord was born, named Darth Bane, he created the rule of two, the rule that there can only be two Sith master and apprentice, a master to embody power, apprentice to reach for this power. When an apprentice becomes more powerful than a master, he kills him and takes his place, taking a new apprentice, the Sith were forced to go underground, but began to develop thanks to this. Darth Bane, after creating this rule, killed all the remaining Sith, becoming a master and taking a girl as an apprentice, who eventually killed him and, taking his place, continued the path of the Rule of Two. Sith and Jedi have opposite ideologies and philosophies, and most importantly - an attitude to the Force, Jedi serve the force, cutting themselves off from everything mundane, they are forbidden to take wives or husbands, have children, have property, nothing should cause affection and emotions and distract from serving the Force. Emotions lead to the dark side of the force, so the Sith raise their emotions to the absolute, they feed on them, most often hatred and rage, as one of the most powerful emotions, but also any other, if the Jedi serve the force like monks, then the Sith use the force to get what they want. Even the powers of the dark side and the light side are different, the light side is more creative and protective (force push, mind deception), when the dark side is more destructive and aggressive (force choke, force lightning) Now to the more relevant:) At the moment, thanks to political intrigues, the Sith lord Darth Sidious gained power over the galaxy, after which, with the help of his apprentice Darth Vader, he almost destroyed the Jedi Order, the Jedi are forced to hide without having contact with each other in the hope of someday being able to fight back. Oh yes, well, the names of the Sith Darth Vader, Darth Sidious, Darth Maul, etc. are not names given at birth, they receive them when they join the order, the prefix Darth literally means Lord in the language of the Sith. The code of the sith Peace is a lie. There is only Passion. Through Passion, I gain Strength. Through Strength, I gain Power. Through Power, I gain Victory. Through Victory my chains are Broken. The Force shall free me The code of the Jedi There is no emotion, there is peace. There is no ignorance, there is knowledge. There is no passion, there is serenity. There is no chaos, there is harmony. There is no death, there is the Force.

Star Wars isn't just famous for the story but it was also once a standard for film making that's why it looks so good for it's age. My recommendation, watch the next two episodes to complete what's known as the Original Trilogy and leave it there. The prequel trilogy is good in theory but isn't executed well and the sequels are frankly an embarrassment to the franchise and film making in general. The only exception to this would be Rogue One. It ties in nicely with the beginning of what you've just watched (episode 4) but even that is nowhere near the same calibre of film making.

Sodium Pentothal, the 'truth serum', does actually exist but its not exactly how its depicted in movies. It essentially reduces your inhibitions and makes you more compliant to pressure and suggestion. Its effectiveness varies wildly from person to person, so its imperfect nature has lead to it not being in use much anymore due to its questionable reliability. There are still countries that use it for interrogation purposes but not many.
@brucechmiel7964

The mind probe is a lot more nefarious and effective than sodium pentothal. In legends it can trick the brain into feeling all sorts of stimuli. Like being dunked in acid, or set on fire, or make you think you killed someone important to you. The Probe is designed to weaken your will and make you more susceptible to suggestions.

"I knew there was more to you than money!" - "But he still gets the money, right?" So funny. Also, I guess Princess Leia is a polarizing character: One of you is thankful she's on our side cause she knows more about what's going on, the other one says, no, she's just as clueless as Luke and Han except she's being a dick about it. I wonder what a psychoanalyst would make of those reactions to her. Great job, guys!

For future reference: Whenever someone disappears when they die it is because they became a force ghost. So their consciousness lives on in the force, that’s how you man hear obi wan talking to Luke through this movie after he was dead. Only force users can do this, so if Han or someone died he wouldn’t become a force ghost, and not even all Jedi have this ability, only a select few discovered and learned it

The planet is Tattoine. It is in a binary star system. Jawa: Little species, native to the planet. Scavangers. Sand People/Tuskan Raider: Also native species to the planet. Hostile to outsiders. The reason the Sand People ran off was because Obi-wan made the sound of a Krayt dragon, which they fear. In 1977 effects had to be practical. SFX themselves had to be added to the film after, usually by hand. Star Wars also created much of the technology that is currently used in movie making. "Truth serums" are actually a thing. These include ethanol, scopolamine, 3-quinuclidinyl benzilate, midazolam, flunitrazepam, sodium thiopental, and amobarbital.

"Overhated", oh please. For the last 10 years or so people are bending over backwards trying to talk up the prequels and how "brilliant" they actually are, after the justified disappointment compared to the OT when they came out. It's just compulsive contrarianism. I get it when people say "yeah the prequels have a lot of problems but I still like em because I saw them when I was a little kid", but this "ackshually they're super deep and brilliant!" is really grinding my gears.

@@robertgronewold3326 Nah, I'd say they get the appropriate amount of "hate". Look, I get it, you grew up with them when you were a little kid with no media literacy and it makes you feel insecure when people criticize something you associate positive childhood memories with. You're allowed to like wooden acting, flat boring characters, poorly aged, overemployed CGI, cringy dialogues, etc., but you must realize that most people just don't like those things. Also the sequels being shit doesn't make the prequels any less shit retroactively, that's not how it works. And in 10-15 years there's going to be another generation of children who grew up with the sequels who will praise them as "underrated masterpieces ackshually", maybe then you'll understand what I'm talking about.

The indegenous people of the desert planet with the precious resource on it coded Arabs. The de-humanizing portayl/treatment of the Sand People in Star Wars is actually addressed later in the franchise, and they are shown to be a rich and vibrant culture, uniquely adapted to a harsh, unforgiving habitat. 24:15 "How ya gonna lose to a bitch-ass f*cking serum?" Sodium Pentathol and other so-called "truth serums" loosen your inhibitions and supress higher brain functions, making it harder to *remember* your lie and keep your story straight. They don't work all that well, it is mostly a movie thing. Something else you can do is inject someone with drugs that just make them feel *bad* as *torture* and withhold an antidote or threaten to dose them more.

It's hard to explain the cultural phenomenon this was that summer (and then fall and Christmas season) this was in 1977. Every theater had "HELD OVER SIX MORE WEEKS!" on their marquee. It snuck into every vein of popular culture - every style of music, TV, radio, national news stories, records, toys.....everything. The only things I can compare it to would be the early stages of Elvis, The Beatles and Michael Jackson Thriller era. Since then, everyone has been trying to tap that initial hysteria but with disappointing results. It will never be duplicated.

The dog fight scene at the end was mapped on old World war II footage from Battle of Britain so they replicated it with models and footage. This film also had to create many of the techniques which were used going forward, some of the effects and CGI were added in the 90s when it was re-released. The droids in the Star wars universe are restricted by programming so dont tend to lie, and tend to do as they are told, but may try to find ways of following instructions, this is why they told the trooper where Luke was heading and why they just let them walk out. The film is heavily based on an old Japanese movie.

One way to understand the impact of “Star Wars” in 1977 is to look at, say, the ENTIRETY of the 1970s up to that point, look at what was popular up until mid-1977. No matter how good those films are, and there were many great films - “Star Wars” just rearranged the entire landscape. It was so fresh, so invigorating, so new and inventive, that watching the film was akin to some new kind of stimulant you could only get at the cinema. EVERYTHING done before “Star Wars” was instantly forgotten. Everything cool three weeks before was old news! The change happened FAST, and soon every kid wanted Star Wars, and their parents with ticket money had to agree: It was pretty damn cool. Then look at how many WAVES of science fiction and fantasy films that came in the years and decades following. Everyone wanted a piece of the wild fantasy entertainment craze. It went on solid for years. The movie’s technological advances and their repercussions we are still seeing today, and would take many volumes to discuss. This is one of the most influential movies in ALL film history, truly.

All of 13 minutes in (minus some cut time), and they know they love R2D2. Like all the rest of us! If no one's mentioned it, one of the primary things his style of droid is designed for starship repair, which is why he (and others) ride with the fighters. I have to say, I love how after decades of sci-fi films taking inspiration and cues from these movies, you can still watch this and feel like the scenes and aliens are exotic. Speaks to the quality of the design for... pretty much everything. "Everyone sucks at aiming!"... welcome to Star Wars. If you don't have the Force, aiming skills are... variable. See you at the next movie!

This movie was a quantum leap forward in special effects. Up until this moment the state-of-the-art for special effects was the Ray Harryhausen stop motion films, the original Star Trek TV series, and 2001 A Space Odyssey, all of which were at least ten years old. Then suddenly out of the blue this thing hit with such force that people were literally lined up around the block waiting to see it... giving rise to the term "Blockbuster"

Well, since you asked... lol In the original release of this movie, during the Greedo scene, Han shoots first. It's sort of a meme now, but the version you are watching is an "Enhanced Edition." It also adds some new scenes that I don't think add anything to the movie. There is a fan edit called Harmy's Despecialized Edition that, IMO, is the best current version of the films. It gets rid of most of the crap they added in the 90's, but the quality is upscaled.
