@@CristyReacts Thanks for the reply. some other instances from 4&5 came to mind in the meantime: (Spoilers, but if you aren't spoilered what are you doing here :P) In ep 4 Obi-Wan says Luke's father was "the best starpilot in the galaxy". Then in the trench run, Luke is the only one to not get hit by Vader's piloting and shooting. In ep 5, Yoda says that there's "much anger in [Luke]... like his father." Yoda later identifies anger and aggression as gateways to the dark side When Luke battles Imaginary Vader on Dagobah, the scene ends with a Skywalker's face behind the mask And of course "Darth Vader" sounds like "dark father"

Yoda pretending to be a rando is a callback to a Samurai film trope called, "The Stranger on the Road". The idea is on his initial journey to the place he will be trained, the student doesn't know the face of the teacher, so the teacher tests the morality of the student, by disguising himself as a helpless person, to see if they are worthy of the great power they will gain, from being taught how to use the sword.

There is a background story on the "I Know" answer. They spent days filming the carbonite scene, and it was almost a disaster. Everyone on the set get tired, frustrated, angry.. the dialog was changed a hundred times over, nothing was working. The I love you and I love you too was just so lame with the director and Harrison Ford it just wasn't working. So Harrison, good with improvising lines spontaneously came out and said "I Know!" and it worked. Everyone was pleased, and their scene there together ended on a high note.

"There is no try" is applicable to a small handful of things in life, but trying is one of the most important things in most endeavors. Success so often hinges on self-confidence, that can only be built through practice. For people to fear failure so much is a miserable self-repressing pattern. It kinda makes sense for a jedi, as they can see the future, and simply choose their actions according to the best outcome they can foresee. "Try" means nothing for all their intents and purposes.

Worth mentioning (thanks to Jill Beaurup for pointing it out): Han and Leia squabbling in the corridor was so routine that nebody gave it a second thought. And the two ofthem could moveto let people around them without missing a beat in their arguments. It takes practice. About Lando, if you wereresponsibleforthe safety of thousands of people and Darth Fricking Vader knocked on your door and told you to play along, would you refuse? Don't think so. And Lando thought the deal he'd done would keep Han, Leia and the others safe. Vader kept changing the deal time and again until he couldn't take it anymore, despite the risk to himself AND the people he was responsible for. Please notice that he tried to pull Leia out of Vader's notice in the Carbonite chamber. He was trying to protect them to the limit of his capabilities. That were very narrow.

Someone might have already mentioned this... but in 1977, the movie was simply called "Star Wars". Short, short version of the story.... George Lucas began working on the idea that eventually became Star Wars pre-1975. He eventually settled on the idea of a massive space saga with a beginning, middle, and end spanning decades... Only 20th Century Fox was interested in funding the movie, but they made George Lucas cut down his story to a single movie, 120 minute's long. So... Lucas took the most exciting part of his larger story, a part that could stand on it's own, and THAT is what became the script. He had NO idea the kind of success that was headed his way. ALL OF US... who grew up with these movies kept waiting and dreaming for "The Clone Wars" mentioned in the first movie... we all knew there was a prequal story... and we finally got to watch Episode 1, and the beginning of the prequal movies in 1999! After Star Wars became a success, 20th Century Fox green lit more movies. So... George continued his story. BUT because he began the first movie in the middle of his massive space saga, he renamed Star Wars (1977) into Star Wars Episode 4, a New Hope... he re-released it in 1979 (I watched in at a drive-in theater) to get people ready for Episode 5, The Empire Strikes Back... in 1980. So... since 1979-1980, all "main story" Star Wars movies are identified as "episodes 1, 2, 6, 7, etc..." each episode is a continuation of one story. So... now you know why the strange naming sequence. Enjoy the rest of the series! :)

In the original script, Han answered "I love you too" to Leia before being freezed, but both the director and Harrison Ford thought it didn't feel like Han to say that, and after several takes, they still didn't feel it was right so the director just told Harrison not to think about it and just go with it. It was then that he said "I know" and when they were done with the take, the director felt like that was exactly something Han Solo would say. Confident and cocky like the smuggler he is.

Great reaction :) It was fun to watch! Regarding the cave scene, when Luke asks "What will I find?", Yoda answers "Only what you take with you". The cave is strong in the Dark Side of the Force and basically it shows Luke a few things: 1. It shows him what obsesses him (his hatred for Darth Vader) 2. After he decapitates Vader in his vision, it shows him that lashing out in hatred and anger will turn him into what he hates the most and cause him to fall to the Dark Side 3. It foreshadows the relation between Luke and Vader. Regarding Vader's actions on Bespin, Vader was *not* trying to hurt or kill Luke. He was testing him and trying to disable/capture him. You can see how he starts going relatively easy on him and slowly increasing the pressure. It's only when Luke manages to land a hit that Vader stops playing and he almost immediately disarms him. If Vader wanted to kill him right from the start, it would have been a MUCH shorter fight because Luke was not ready for that fight at all. Another thing I want to mention: Not enough credit is given to Vader's understanding and mastery of the Force. When Luke had a vision of Han and Leia's misfortunes on Bespin, it was the future he saw. Vader purposefully made Han and Leia suffer, going as far as torturing Han to use them as bait to draw Luke to him. This means he knew, as a Force user, that due to their relationship, their suffering would cause a ripple in the Force that Luke would sense in the past and come to rescue them. Hence Obi Wan saying "It is you and your abilities the Emperor wants. That's why your friends are made to suffer." Vader had the mindfulness and understanding of how the Force works to plan actions that would have consequences in the past and shape the present to his designs. This is also why Obi-Wan and Yoda urged him not to go (not play into Vader's hand), and the story proves them right : Luke does not help Leia and the gang at all. They escape all on their own. On the contrary, they end up having to rescue *him*.

Hey, Cristy! This is most people's favorite installment and widely considered to be the best Star Wars film. It certainly is mine. Young people who came of age with the Prequel trilogy often cite Episode III as their favorite. "Empire" has four strikingly distinct environments, an amazing opening battle, the Yoda reveal, the romantic sparring, a deeper explanation of the Force, Lando's treachery and redemption, the presence of fan favorite Boba Fett, the loss of Han, the Vader revelation and the cliffhanger ending. It is a wild escapist ride that packs an emotional wallop! Mark Hamill had a terrible car accident prior to filming and underwent facial reconstructive surgery. Already a part of the screenplay, the WAMPA attack on Hoth became an in-story way to explain his new look and the make-up department enhanced his barely-visible scars. Han eviscerating the TAUN TAUN is an authentic form of arctic and/or cold weather survival. He stuffed Luke's hypothermic body in the still-warm carcass of the animal wrapping him in its innards in order to keep him from freezing to death. People have done this to survive. I love it when people freak out watching that scene! BACTA is the liquid in the healing cylinder. It is a bacterial compound with regenerative properties that is the standard medical treatment for all injuries in the Star Wars galaxy. Yoda's odd little voice is provided by his puppeteer Frank Oz who voices many Jim Henson Muppets like Miss Piggy, Fozzie Bear and Animal as well as Sesame Street characters like Cookie Monster, Bert and Grover! Yoda pretended to be a grubby, eccentric hermit simply to get an honest reaction out of Luke that would reveal his character. It's a test like those of the gods in Greek mythology who appear as deformed peasants to see how the hero will behave toward the lowliest person. The new player Vader was kneeling before is the Emperor! The same actor plays him in all his appearances across the saga. The MYNOCKS are bat-sized creatures that feed off electrical energy and are starship pests. Sometimes they live symbiotically in the gullets of space leviathans like the EXOGORTH that swallowed the 'Falcon'! I find it amusing how social norms have changed. I've watched a number of millennials view Star Wars for the first time now on RU-vid and quite a few young women are APPALLED by Han Solo's behavior! When these movies came out, Harrison Ford became an instant mega-star and sex symbol because of his devil-may-care swagger and brash forwardness. He subscribed to the "treat a Queen like a whore and a whore like a Queen" school of seduction and WOMEN LOVED HIM FOR IT!!! You can tell he's a softie underneath which is what makes him endearing but it seems young women today in the era of woke find him INSUFFERABLE!!! All boys thought he was the coolest guy ever. It's funny how times change. I'm relieved his charms weren't lost on you, Cristy! Lol. Leia was a feminist icon back in the day! An independent woman of means comfortable wielding power, unafraid to get her hands dirty and dedicated to a serious cause! A whole generation of young boys and girls grew up with her as a role model. Talented screenwriter Lawrence Kasdan was responsible for all the fun romantic banter in this film. As Leia is Alderaanian royalty and Han Solo is a Corellian street kid, it's basically a CLASS ISSUE preventing her from accepting her feelings for Solo. The constant arguing is their foreplay as he wears her down with his roguish charm. Lol. Harrison Ford's famous "I know." reply to Leia's declaration of love was ad-libbed by Ford who wasn't feeling the more generic "I love you, too." line from the script. Director Irvin Kershner and George Lucas kept it in the movie. It's perfect for the character. I've seen some young female reactors take DEEP OFFENSE! Keep in mind that Solo has been upfront with Leia about his feelings for her for THREE YEARS at this point! She's the one who has been coy with him despite her obvious attraction. Her admission is what HE'S been patiently waiting for and he matter-of-factly tells her he's fully aware of how she feels. It's the answer SHE DESERVES! Lol. The movies were remastered in the late '90s to promote the upcoming Prequel trilogy with some CGI overlays of the original practical effects but this installment has the fewest egregious changes and looks much like it did in 1980. The Wampa feeding, some aerial shots of Cloud City, a clearer view of the Emperor and some windows cut into corridors Leia, Lando and Chewie are running through at the end which look out onto the Bespin cityscape are the only updates I can think of. People were SO INVESTED in this franchise back in 1980 that scrutiny during production was INTENSE!! They had the actor in the Vader suit, David Prowse, speak different lines to Luke to conceal the reveal even though Hamill was told what to react to. Dummy scripts were used on set to throw off snoops and spies. James Earl Jones was told the truth just prior to recording the scene. When Jones uttered those immortal words on screen, "No, I am your father.", audiences collectively GASPED, SCREAMED, CRIED, FAINTED and SHOUTED their dismay! It remains one of cinema's MOST ICONIC MOMENTS.

You are just the sweetest Cristy! I really appreciate your curiosity of the Star Wars universe. That’s part of what makes the original trilogy so brilliant. It’s a fantasy epic that takes place in another Galaxy, so that allows for a lot of creativity with the various worlds, aliens, technology, and mythologies being explored. It makes the viewer curious to learn more. The horse-like creature they are riding is called a Tauntaun. It’s a form of reptilian mammal native to the planet Hoth. Their thick skin helps them survive the arctic conditions of Hoth, but they can’t handle the extreme cold at night. As you see, the Tauntauns can be utilized like horses or camels for traveling across the ice planet. Thanks to their claws, they can burrow into the snow for warmth, climb icy surfaces, scrape away ice for food. The alien creature that attacked Luke and his Tauntaun is called a Wampa. Hoth is home to various clans of Wampas which dwell in the icy caves of the planet. They appear to be heavily inspired by the Yeti. Your reaction to the shocking reveal that Darth Vader is Luke Skywalker’s father is priceless. The story of how Anakin Skywalker became Darth Vader is explored in greater detail in the prequel trilogy, Episodes I-III. It also explores the fall of the Old Republic, the rise of the Galactic Empire, how the Emperor corrupted Darth Vader into coming over to the Dark Side, and why Vader has to wear that suit to keep him alive. So I won’t give too much away lol. The Cave of Evil on Dagobah contains a powerful concentration energy from the Dark Side of the Force. When Luke enters the cave, he is a confronted by a manifestation of this dark energy, which symbolically takes the form of Darth Vader. The visions Luke experiences in this cave represent not only his past and future, but also his possible future. Princess Leia and Han Solo are definitely a thing. There is a mutual attraction between the two, and even though they often bicker with each other, they slowly fall in love. As for Leia and Luke, they do love each other, but not in the way you think. You’ll find out in Return of the Jedi! 🫶🏻

Today "I am your father" is considered one of the great plot twists in movie history. Back in 1980 the production team went to great lengths to hide the twist before release. They even filmed what i call dummy scenes with completely different dialogue just to keep the crew from knowing. On release day only a very few people actually knew what the true scene was.

I will never forget the time then i became Star Wars fan , of course my entire journey of Star Wars started with episode one and later all other episodes joined in , old style classic movies of Star Wars saga which with my both parents grew up in to these day leaving me speechless , i remember important fact which was mentioned by Ewan Mcgregor who played younger version of Obi Wan Kenobi , during the making production of Revenger Of The Sith he mentioned that he always was inspired by Star Wars and his dad took him to see episode four The New Hope , that was the first time he saw a character like Obi Wan Kenobi played by late actor Alec Guinness and was left inspired by his character which played him decades later. I'm gonna say that i love so much each episode of Star Wars saga , even now i'm 30 years old and i still have goosebumps while watching these iconic cinematic pictures over and over again. All the cinematic special effects , all the duels with lighsabers , battles in space between good and evil sides will always be part of my life , so as Star Wars episodes , thank you so so much Cristy for taking us for an adventure across the galaxy while facing amazing battles in outer space , witnessing blood boiling lightsaber duels. I love your reactions very much ❤❤❤ like our favorite character Obi Wan Kenobi likes to say - may the force be with you. Always ❤

The cave vision Luke experiences had a double meaning behind it. The first being if he faced Vader at that point in time he would not survive, the other was the cave telling him if he was not careful and did not learn to control his anger, he would follow in Vader's footsteps.

The one thing about the added special effects is that there were many new shots added. However, the bulk of the show is as original, and that's no small feat what they accomplished. Mark Hamill was in an accident and it changed his facial appearance somewhat. That swat to the face by the ice monster was intended to explain it away in the story as to why he looked different. The collective gasp in the theater when Vader said he was Luke's father.....never forget that moment. Also, Vader wasn't trying to kill Luke. He was maneuvering him, toying with him. He even said, Don't make me destroy you." Meaning, he was fully able to do it if he wanted to.

- If you really watch the fight between Luke and Vader, Vader starts the fight just using one hand, almost toying with Luke because he knows that Luke is his son (that you didn't know the biggest spoiler in movie history/pop culture was amazing!!!). - Leia is in many ways a badass. However, one of the things about the way her arc was written is weird. Don't worry...the Leia, Luke, and Han thing gets weirder. You're welcome! After Return of the Jedi, you'll see what I mean. - The "I love you", "I know" dialogue...actually will become very romantic. However, it was written that Han Solo was supposed to say "I love you" as well. Unfortunately, it was not working, so Harrison improvised " I know" with the blessing of director Irvin Kershner and George Lucas. It worked, and they kept it in the film. - The chemistry between Harrison Ford (Han) and Carrie Fisher (Leia) was partly due to the fact that during the filming of the first movie, the two had an affair off-screen. See Carrie Fisher's book, The Princess Diarist for more about that. The funny thing was...NOBODY knew that it happened until years later!!! Mark Hamill (Luke) was completely blindsided when he found out...because...if you watch the clip in my next note, Carrie Fisher could not keep secrets! - The "No, I am your father" scene. The best explanation of this is to watch this clip of Mark Hamill (Luke) telling the story on Graham Norton during press for The Force Awakens (no spoilers except seeing three cast members of that film), complete with a spot-on Harrison Ford impression: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-OsSKFlk8oEo.html

1. Han to Chewy, "Laugh it ups fuzzball" 2. The scene in the cave is Luke seeing into his future if he were to turn to the dark side. 3. Do them in the original release. They were put that way for a reason. Jumping ahead ruins it for you and us. 4. IRL Ford and Fisher were having an affair. She was only 19 and he was much older and married. She put it in her biography before she died. She got an ok from him to put it in there. 5. Hans', "I know" was ad lib because Ford thought it was what Solo would say, and required a new script to be written in the next movie. 6. Ford wanted Solo to die. 7. You will learn more about the emperor and Darth Vader in episodes I, II and III. 8. The next one wraps everything up and IMVHO is the best of the original VI Lucas episodes.

Back during the planning phase of this movie, Luke was supposed to travel to three planets to learn a lesson from three different masters. Yoda, Obi-Wan, and his father. But to bring the costs of production down it was changed to one planet where Yoda and Kenobi are. And the biggest change was combining the Parts of Luke’s father and Darth Vader. This gave George the drive to make his prequel films. In fact, he was more excited for the idea of those movies that he was finishing his own trilogy. However, he was kicked out of the writers and directors guild for not having Irving Kirchner’s name at the beginning of the film. Something he refused to from south, as he wanted to make his fairytales consistent with each other. This killed his hopes of making his 12 movie epic. Originally each subsequent movie would be directed by a different Director with the last movie being done by him. And but with him losing his position in the union, he couldn’t hire Spielberg or any of his best friends to continue his projects so he finished his trilogy, and then disappeared for a few years, doing odds and stuff, and working behind the scenes or just running his business until in 1995 he released his original trilogy in the hopes of seeing if there was still a demand for new Star Wars. If he was absolutely surprised by the amount of positivity, he got from the special edition. So he begin work on his prequel films.

Everyone was shocked and gasped when Darth Vader told Luke who he was. In the scene where Princess Leia told Han solo, she said I love You and Han said I know was improvised, Harrison Ford in Take after Take kept saying I love You back, but it wasn't working. One take Harrison Ford goes I know. He tells George Lucas that would be what Han would say. George Lucas agreed so the I Know was left in the Movie.

19:27, bingo and after this kiss Leia no longer tries to deflect Han's attentions. Their whole energy changes from this point forward. When Han links their arms together, she doesn't pull away. When he kisses her on the forehead later in Cloud City she doesn't pull away. In their last moment together when she says "I love you" that's why Han says "I know". Not because Han is a smooth ladies man but because he knows she has loved him all this time. Fun fact, originally Han was supposed to say Leia "I love you too". But Harrison Ford thought it wouldn't work with a character with so much bravado. So they changed his line to simply "I know"

Not only did three years pass in real life between films. But three years passed between the destruction of the death star, and the imperial attack on Hoth. Han and Leia had been involved for some time. Han did not pay back Jabba. Instead, he stayed with the rebellion for her. The bounty Hunter, that Han mentioned during the argument was his excuse for leaving since he felt he wasn’t getting anywhere with her. Despite the fact they both love each other, they are incredibly stubborn he’s a scoundrel, and she is so caught up in the cause that she won’t allow herself to express intimacy or even love for anybody. The entire point of their argument throughout the story was Han trying to get her to admit it. Which she finally did at the cost of his life. The line was improvised but “I know” was his way of saying “See? I won. I knew you loved me.”

Haven't you ever kissed a friend, or a family member? It doesn't have to mean anything romantic. There never was anything between Luke and Leia, except maybe a teenage fascination with a beautiful woman from another planet.. Han's "I know" was perfect. Leia knew he loved her. But she'd been fighting her own feelings for him. At the moment of his possible death, his "I know" showed he was at peace with her feelings for him. He finally knew she felt the same way for him that he did for her, and he could die at peace.

One of the more important things to realise about The Empire Strikes Back, especially relating to offscreen progression of the Han/Leia/Luke relationships, is that this is three years later in story time. It isn't directly after the destruction of the Death Star. Relationships aren't exactly where they were when we last saw them. Poor Leia is really young, trying to be a leader all the time, something for which she has serious training and aptitude clearly. But at the same time she's in the middle of a rebel military force that is nearly entirely composed of men, trying to maintain her professional distance from people as a leader. She probably has no real female friends and I'm pretty sure her parents were on Alderaan when the Empire destroyed it. So no relationship advice from either of those sources. She wants to be attracted to the nice boy Luke, but actually is ever more attracted to the roguish Han Solo instead. She needs people to cut her some slack, she's coping pretty well! Lando probably deserves a little slack too. He's not a rebel, he's just trying to run his business and look after his employees and customers under direct threat from the Galactic Empire. He hates betraying Han, but was sold a lie that the only thing they were after was some guy he doesn't even know. It may pay to know that between this one and Return of the Jedi, the time skip is shorter but is still about 6 months or so. One of the best pieces of music in Star Wars is 'The Asteroid Field' from this movie. Not quite the Imperial March or the Force Theme, but I love it and it suits the chase through the asteroids so well. John Williams is so good at movie music.
