First Time Watching THE GODFATHER | Part 1 Reaction to the Greatest Film Ever!
Part 2 @: • First Time Watching TH...
Widely regarded as one of the greatest films of all time, this mob drama, based on Mario Puzo's novel of the same name, focuses on the powerful Italian-American crime family of Don Vito Corleone (Marlon Brando). When the don's youngest son, Michael (Al Pacino), reluctantly joins the Mafia, he becomes involved in the inevitable cycle of violence and betrayal. Although Michael tries to maintain a normal relationship with his wife, Kay (Diane Keaton), he is drawn deeper into the family business.

One of the many cool facts about this movie is that the actor who played Luca Brazi was an actual mob enforcer in NYC. The studio was getting nowhere with the movie until NYC crime boss Joe Colombo gave the OK. Colombo even had script approval. The producer and studio were in bed with the mafia big time. The actor who was slated to play Luca was unable to participate in the movie so the producers used Colombo enforcer and former pro wrestler Lenny Montana to play the part. The scene where he is rehearsing his lines for Don Corleone was the actual rehearsal Lenny was doing because he kept screwing it up.

I’m so happy you finally got around to this one, it’s one of my faves. In the book, Vito thinks that Michael is gay until he loses his virginity at 17, which i found hilarious. He had no reason to think he was gay, it was just because he hadn’t had sex. Also, Luca is described as the only man that Vito fears because of his pure ruthlessness. The first scene with the man asking Vito to help him with his daughter’s attack actually starts out with the man and his wife in court seeing the men get off on what they did and because of that he seeks help from Vito so he did in fact go to the police and there was a trial, they get off because ‘’they were good boys with good and clean backgrounds from good families and had a good future ahead of them’’. Also on a sadder note in the book Apollonia was pregnant. I really do think if she hadn’t died, he would of taken her back to America, I really feel like he loved her more than he loved Kay and he only married Kay because Apollonia died.

Hi Millennial - You are good at watching movies. You got things it took me 2 or 3 times through to get. The second one is also excellent and it has Robert DeNiro as a young Vito becoming a don.

911 didn't become the emergency number until 1968. $600k in 1946 is like $10M now.

I definitely know you’ll enjoy Part II. Also if you want to see magnetic acting, I recommend Dog Day Afternoon, it’s based on a true story but the way Al acts in it, I recommend it to anyone who wants to study acting.

Absolutely great suggestion: Part II.....and then Dog Day Afternoon. (And not just Al, but John Cazale who plays Fredo, he's fantastic in that one, and totally different.)

23:51 Per the book, Sicilian tradition says that a man can only give a gift of gold to someone they are married to or engaged to. So when Michael gave her a gold chain, that was a sign that he was serious; and was, by tradition, a formal proposal of marriage. Her wearing the gold chain was a sign that she accepted the proposal. 26:16 It's nice to see a younger person reviewing this film who gets/understands it right from the start. FYI... I think you are the only reviewer I've seen who figured this part out in real time.

The scene in front of the hospital is a defining moment to Michael. Enzo os shaking like a leaf and then Michael notices something. His hands aren’t shaking. What does mean? He realizes he was made for this 💩

The first 911 call was in 1967. It wasn’t common throughout the country until the year 2000, when it was available in 93% of the country. The film is set around 1946-47, right after WW2 ended.

For Brando´s character, Don Vito Corleone, Francis Ford Coppola put a jaw prosthesis in his mouth and a gauze, to give him that particular face. Marlon Brando was relatively young in this film, and Coppola pretended to age him and also look more threatening.

My family were Bronx Sicilians, 3 generations, so I understand the turf. I've been to my grandfather's hometown in Sicily (just a few miles to Corleone) -- everything in this film looks right, from NYC locations to Sicily itself.

I know you haven’t gotten to this point since it’s in pt 2 of your reaction but there’s this clip of 2 dogs fighting a cat and the cat jumps one of the dogs and pulls him off the bed and i said it reminds me of the scene when Carlo dies. Cat was like ‘’hello carlo’’’ lmao.

Apollonia would have made a much better Mafia wife than Kay. You'll see in part II. And you will see in part II that it was Sonny that introduced Carlo to Connie 😢

Good reaction but why two parts? Other RU-vidrs dedicate one lengthy reaction to this great movie and when they make it a two-parter, they keep the delay short, not ten days...

Apollonia represents the old world which is whete they are and want to move away from as they make the family legitimate. Kaye represents the waspy legit world they want to be a part of.

Saw this in the theater as a kid. Rewatched waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay oper 100 times since. You're reaction was fucking AWESOME!!!! Part two is about tied for #1 spot of all time. But PLEASE, do NOT watch part three. It'd be like going to the world's best restaurant two nights in a row, then getting a happy meal at McDs the next night. Long story why it sucks SO bad, but reason #1 is a super young Winona Ryder was set to play Michaels daughter, but she got really sick at the last minute and had to be replaced. No time to find a real actress who could pull it off so Coppola hired his daughter, who gives the worst screen performance of all time (in a movie that was supposed to kick ass). Part three is pure cringe, part two is like dying and going to cinema heaven. STOP AT TWO!!! In any event, your reaction was grade A+++ top shelf does NOT get better, so I'm holding my breath now waiting for your part two reaction. You rock bruh!
