Oh boy is that scene with Atreyu losing Artax in the swamp a memorable one for me. At 5 or 6 that was devastating!

My mom showed me and my siblings this movie when we were kids, it’s one of those movies where the concept sticks with you more than certain scenes did, at least for me. Fantastic movie!!!

I usually don’t stick around for additional commentary… but you nailed it. Having watched this movie new in theater at 9 years old, I felt this too. Ya nailed it. ❤️

Oh my gosshhhh this is my favorite film of all time & always crushes my soul when reactors dismiss it but you connected with it just like me I feel so seen 🥺

When you've watched this movie so many times you can quote along to the final scene between Childlike Empress, Atreyu, and Bastian. Some people take issue with the name Bastian calls out "Moonchild", but he was born in the early 70s, which means there's a chance that his mom was a hippy and that was HER name. Never apologize for crying to these films, that's what they're for.. not just for kids, but for those kids once we've grown to remember to imagine. Just like The Princess Bride.

Enjoyed your reaction a lot. I recently watched this with my 3 y.o. daughter, trying to talk her through the dialog with simpler vocabulary she could grasp. I found myself choking up at similar points you did, getting teary eyed, my voice would tremble and it got harder to utter out the words from my mouth. Today, she was singing the theme song and asked to rewatch it. I love the questions she was asking about the movie along the way, trying to dissect it and understand its meaning. I enjoy feeling her emotional reactions to the film too, she clings tight to me when artax sinks, and the scary gmork comes on screen, I remember feeling the same set of emotions as her when I was young too. A pleasure to share this movie with her, and am glad she connects with it.

I cried right along with you. This is a powerful movie to me, a lesson to keep the sense of wonder of a child.

Absolutely adore this film! I actually won a European competition (I'm in the UK) when I was round 10 years old to design a dragon which they had said they would use as the inspiration for Falkor the Luckdragon however in the end they didn't for whatever reason. I got to see the premier of the film and got some items to do with the film too. That was an amazing feeling winning something like that at that age. Pretty much the only time I've won anything in my entire life!! 🙂

11:36 I subscribed. This is exactly how the film impacted me at 4-5 and throughout my life. The film also helped me face fears. It helped me realize how much influence I have in my existence. I am alive in many people's stories. I am more important than I'll ever know. I teach my 7 yr/old daughter the same thing. Edit: wow I just reached the end of this video and.. You're a wonderful human being. As someone dealing with a deprived inner child, I'm glad you exist.

This is one of my favorite films for every reason you mentioned. Part of social disdain for children is likely a byproduct of our disappointment for the way in which we raise them. I used to be terrified of parts of this film and in adulthood realized it's also conceptually scary, even for grown ups. I also learned that kids need this sort of fear, the good kind of fear that helps them to grow and mature in their imagination. That's the reason so many beloved older films often have a scary element, and the sequels that lack it are far less popular. Amazing reaction.

I was the perfect age for this when it came out. It has always remained one of my favorite childhood films. The messages of hope and never stop dreaming still resonate.

I read an article about this movie and the book. It referenced Artax in the book was a small horse that could talk. And he actually explains to Atreyu why he’s sad and how lonely he is and tells him to leave him. I cried reading that. I saw this movie as a child of the 80s. I told my kids how cool it was back then. Every movie made us feel like there was adventure anytime we went outside. Take me back. 💜💜💜

Gmork is literally a black dog (well, werewolf), so he's a clear metaphor for the emptiness and depression that the Nothing also represents. This movie is still great, and great reaction! Subscribed.

You don't have to have anything going on in your life to cry to The Neverending Story. Its craftsmanship is just that good on its own.

This is one of the best films ever made. It’s thought-provoking, imaginative, creative, incredibly emotional, empowers people to follow their dreams and escape horrible situations, and so much more. It also has an amazing theme song and imagery that’s just so surreal with so much effort put into creating this world with detail that’s amazing. The dialogue plays into the fears and subconscious of our minds. An immortal classic.

The way they did the Sphinx gate always made me laugh lol no he didn’t run and dodge fire bombs in the book haha he felt confident and calmly walked through but I guess they wanted more spectacle in the movie 😂

I can't even guess how many times I seen this as a kid growing up in the 80s-90s, and never got tired of it. If I said 100 times I don't think I would be exaggerating at all. Glad you enjoyed! I definitely enjoyed watching your reaction!!!

This has probably already been mentioned fifty times in the comments, but read the book. It's pretty transformative. Some of the chapters and images have stuck with me for years.

Being a latchkey kid and the oldest of five at age 9 I had to watch my siblings. I was a shy and awkward child and I was told that I couldn't have my head in the clouds. I had very low self-esteem and a lot of self-doubt. Being told what I believed to be a natural thing like having an imagination was wrong, I was forced to grow up. It's nice to know that you share my feelings.

I'm really enjoying getting to know the real Imon. I'm so glad you've let her out 🥰 And yes, just the other day someone brought up to me how is clearly about the multiverse, Bastian and Atreus being fractals of the same oversoul.

Artax Represents Despair, Morla represents Apathy, and the Rockbiter represents powerlessness.

I think it's so important to take children seriously. Not to make them serious, but to hear them and recognize their interests and experiences. This movie didn't pander, or hold back from real emotion - it takes children seriously. We need them, dreamers of every age, if anything is ever going to change.

I always love how Bastian's first wish is to fly, and his second is REVENGE!

This is one of my all time favourite movies from my childhood. I still love watching this as an adult for the many reasons you spoke about- a reminder to believe in your own dreams, have confidence in yourself and not let others bring you down or tell you your path. That and the importance of imagination to uplift your spirit! So lovely to see someone else discover this gem from the eighties, they dont make em like they use to! 🥰 hugs!

I was nine years old when the movie released and watched it in the theatre. It has a special place in my heart. I cry every time I watch it. Thank you for a beautiful reaction to a beautiful movie.

I watched that movie like 100 times as a kid, had it on VHS, love it till this day. Deep psychology and therapy for (not only tho) kids, amazing :) Glad people discovering it till this day :) Wisdom is universal and timelessl, it is not "new", that's why such movies are timeless. An interesting note, the movie ends at the half way point of the book. The true reason it's called the neverending story isn't revealed until the second half. Don't want to spoil for anyone who reads the book though.

This is my childhood! I loved this growing up. It scared me but it also intrigued me. Watching it as an adult it feels like the book helped Bastien process the stages of grief That swamp scene is still so emotional!

In this world it is something you have to fight for, but it’s worth the fight. We are the conscious universe, And we are the dreamer of dreams.

You're a beautiful person. Watching your reaction was how I felt, when I watched this back in the 1984. I'm a man, and I was 20 at the time. I'm 60 now and you had me in tears. The Horse scene was especially emotion evoking for me.

I know I'm late to the party, but I wanted to say I'm so happy you got to watch this and fall in love with it, and I hope your kids loved it too! It's been a favorite of mine all my life (and I'm in my early 40s!) and I revisit it from time to time, and it never fails to make me cry. I 100% agree with you on saving, and nurturing the light. It's really hard to keep it lit through such dark times. I also came out of the dark after being in it for decades. It's important to keep going. I would escape my own bad situation in movies, and books. I was 2 when this movie came out, and there were many movies, and shows that helped me through tough times. I even got my morals for shows as a kid. Shows like Mr. Roger's, the Andy Griffith Show. So it definitely is important to monitor media consumption for kids. There is a big impact.

Probably the first ever movie I watched that made me cry. I'm now 42 years old and seeing Artax die and the Empress crying and begging for her name.. I still cry.

I have created a playlist of important videos and added this video there. This message hits me hard cause rn I'm 14 and male and I'm struggling cause the child's wonder is slowly leaving me. People throughout my life have made me feel like I'm wrong and imagining and creating non- physical things is wrong and psychotic, unhealthy. I believed that til age 12 when I started to question the things people were telling me. Now I'm going through the teens and people think being childlike is awkward or corny. Children are the future. When I first saw the movie, it scared me. I was six years old, and I didn't really see the first one until I was 8. I got to know the tale of Bastian through the second film, and though not a masterpiece I still found myself drawn into the story, waking something inside and gave me so much inspiration to write my own stories that I'm still writing to this day. As I got older, life was rough, but in 2014 I decided to embark on something I found intimidating as a kid. Being diagnosed with dyslexia, I always had trouble reading. But one day, I decided I wanted to read, or in this case, listen to, an audiobook while I was working. And that's when I thought about the neverending story. Halfway through chapter 5, I went to my local bookshop and bought the original book, and since then, reading has become a big part of my life. I now own 5 copies of that very same book, one in silk, one in the original German, one misprint and a small pocket version. No matter how many times I've read it or gone over to other stories, I still find myself coming back to that very book that now resides in a glass box on my shelf. As of today, I've read it 16 times. It truly is a neverending story, both book and the 2 films, one that I will cherish to the day I pass. Now, I tell my stories to my children, and I owe it all to the one who started it all. I was 5 when this movie released in theatres and my mom took me to see it the first day. It was the greatest movie I'd ever seen as a child. My mom hates this movie, she ended up buying it for me on VHS so she could stop going to video rental stores trying to find it for me and I watched it over and over. A few years after the movie released one of my elementary school teachers brought in a book that had mailing addresses for fan clubs of different movies and tv shows that were popular with kids at the time like ALF, Wesley Crusher (Wil Wheaton), Bastien (Barret Oliver), Corey Haim and Corey Feldman just to name a few and we'd fight each other for the book in class. About 3 weeks after you wrote a letter and sent it to the fan clubs address, you'd get a heartfelt thank you letter that the stars didn't write in response to your letter the stars didn't read. It came with autographed pictures and some stickers or a small toy.

This reaction was so great. the message at the end always reminds me of my youth and how much i loved reading and creating.

It's rare for me to pass out a like vote. So far I have never clicked dislike. Not even accidentally as far as I can tell. It's even more rare for me to drop a comment, but from the lhe halfhour mark onward, you poured your heart out to your audience and it resonated with me in a powerful way. I didn't speak, not even to myself much. I just observed and I felt something. I felt a connection. At that half hour mark, for a moment, I was a bit disappointed. For the clips of the film to end that early meant there was more conversation after it rather than watching you directly react to the film live. i know youtube has its restrictions on how much of the actual film, and especially the music, you can post, but results seem to very and I'm generally in favor of those who posted more of the actual video because that also means more of the reactor's reaction is also there to see without having to climb over paywalls like patron. But what you said . . . spoke to me. Spoke to my inner child and now as an adult and what's left of my inner child. i watched this in theaters when it first came out, but that means I was only 4 years old. Even after all that time, I understood the material only to a limited degree. Only to what a child would understand. Typically that is not the deep stuff. It's the overt stuff. My child self understood the wonder and majesty of the appeal of flying across Fantatia on a friendly luck dragon. Likewise, the wolf almost scared me away from seeing the film entirely and it planted a seed of fear of the world in me as if to say "This is why you should be afraid. This could happen to you." I think maybe I am still that child because there's still a lot of depth I've never understood until you explained it in this video. As I watched you go on, part of me was in awe. I could feel my eyes widen slightly as new realizations sunk in. Thank you for that. Your message primarily seemed to revolve around the value of youth and innocence. The wonder and importance of imagination and what it can create. Unlike me, you look at this from two perspectives. First, as a child, which I can relate to, and the flip side as a parent, which I can't relate to. Recently I noticed, tonight in fact, that there was something magical about earlier films like in the 80's. To me, that was my youth. That was when I was a child. That was when the world was still new to me. Obviously I wasn't comparing it to films in later decades, but I can now. There are plenty that still entertains me, but look at films like this one, and Ghostbusters, and Terminator, and Gremlins, and Goonies. There is something in common with them all besides the decade they came out. There was a magic in them that's hard to explain, and even harder to explain why modern films lack it. They are still pretty good, but good like something produced in a factory. A "by the numbers" kind of feel while this feels unique. True magic. True message. True impact. We are living a story and the most important aspect about it is what we learn from it. Stories like this carry us through a journey. We learn and grow from that too. There's still value in being the spectator. The Observer, but that can take effort too. As the observer, need to focus on inner growth and what the meaning of life means to you based on what you've learned.

I’ve seen The Neverending Story during its original run back in the 80’s and I have a lot of healthy nostalgia attached to it. Along with Labyrinth it would be the perfect 80’s fantasy double feature, and what is the most important, due to mostly practical special effects, both these movies aged very well and will be appreciated by young viewers for many years in the future 👍🏻

Being an 80s kid and seeing it when it was new, it is notorious for the Artax drowning scene as it made is all cry almost uncontrollably, very traumatizing. But at least this movie had us kids rallying at the end, especially when Falkor arrives and saves Atreyu. A lot of 80s kids films were traumatizing to us but at least the Neverending Story had a very positive message and had us all smiling by the end. Cocoon, Return to Oz, and The Boy Who could Fly were even more traumatizing.

I’m glad to see you liked the movie, but your speech about the light being snuffed out of us as kids was probably my favorite part. You’re the first person I’ve seen talk about the subject and honestly it hit a nerve with me and I started crying right along with you 😆 It’s so important to have at that age and as an adult I’d give almost anything to be able to feel that sense of childlike wonder again. It breaks my heart to see it slowly being taken away from others, regardless of their age.

I was never normal. Part of it is mental illness. There was a lot of darkness from an early age that became a form of trauma in itself because i suffered nightmares for every dream. I can count on one hand the happy/positive dreams I've had. I'll be 40 this summer. It never got addressed and sometimes i forget that it can also be a blessing. The parts of me that create and imagine needed to be broken and rebuilt by my own hand. Its never too late to imagine your creativity and create your imagination. Sometimes it's the only way to get there.

That speech at the end. This emptiness you talk about is a product of fear.

You have to open your heart to watch this film. I watched for the first time when I was 9 when it first came out, and I have been a dreamer ever since.

Me and my kid scavange old vhs tapes, shes always loved the horror movies. We repaired an old tube tv/vcr and since she was 6 she loved all these old movies. She has a nostalgia for a time she never lived in. It may seem sad but she makes her own stories and writes what she wants to see in the world. And she talks about it with her friends, most of them are online as how things work now. I'm glad she does, but I can't help to imagine her hanging out in a mall in the 80's playing games with friends in person.

I loved this movie for the same reason as James and the Giant Peach. The message is to live your dreams out. Considering almost all great accomplishments and creations start with dreams it’s a good lesson to hold onto. I’m 34 and I still laugh and cry about certain parts of this movie.

This is my most favorite movie of all time. Im 45. It just introduced me to reading as i do today. It's every kid's fantasy.

Just letting you know that I was right there with you, crying along, even though I very rarely do cry at movies. I haven't seen this movie in ages, an it was a great one to revisit. This is actually based on a 1979 book by one of the best German children's book authors ever, Michael Ende (Pretty ironic that his last name literally means "the end" by the way), and this movie is actually only the first third or so of the whle story! So if you enjoyed this movie, I'd highly recommend reading or listening to the original book, it's definitely worth it! Also, for future reactions: Have you seen the Wizard of Oz, the 1939 one with Judy Garland? In my brain, it's somehow connectd to this movie, maybe they gave me similar vibes as a kid... But it's definitely a masterpiece in it's own right!
