This was a two or 300 page short story and almost nothing was cut for the film, it just shows you how much screen time is needed to fully adapt a book to the screen. The most major change from the book was there was many wardens over the course of Andy's incarceration, not just one. For the movie it makes sense to have one since that allows you to have a common antagonist for the entire story.
@@ATSaale Also Red was a white guy. I read the book, but it's been awhile. The Green Mile, The Shinning, Christine, Carrie. Some of his books have made very good movies. some not. I know I left some movies out, but these are the ones who come to mind.
Frank Darabont gotta be one of the greatest directors in cinema who's still kinda underated. Between Shawshank, Green Mile, and The Walking Dead thats a goat resume.
Red and Andy, two men who would never have met in life outside of prison. Different skin color, different education, place of residence and "class" in the sense of above and below". All that is so infinitely "important" to us humans. They meet each other and quickly become friends, as they recognize each other's true worth. By breaking out, Andy can create a safety net for Red. The new home is also there. As such, Brooks had no network, no friends outside of prison, simply no one and himself a nobody. As if made for relapse or suicide. Is that the point of being released from prison? An outstanding film with outstanding actors.
I've watched this movie so many times, but your reaction made me see it with new eyes. I love your laid-back but insightful reactions. So many RU-vid reactors think they need to be loud and make jokes all the time while watching. I prefer videos like yours when you only talk when you have something worth saying. Thank you.
I watch this movie everytime i come across it on TV. Classic Steven King, so many twists and turns keep you locked in. Right up there with Green Mile. Glad you enjoyed it. Keep up the great work ‼️ ☮️ 💜
My favorite moment of the movie is when Red finds the money Andy left him under the rock, and then frantically checks around him for anyone who might have seen. The man is sitting in the middle of an empty field with only the sounds of birds and bugs, but prison will shape a man.
Great reaction guys. One of my favourite movies. I loved how you picked up on all the little subtleties. Another interesting detail is when Brooks was getting out, the camera focuses on the prison behind him, but when Red was released, the camera shows the outside world in front of him. I think it implies that Brooks belonged inside and Red was destined for freedom.
In the movie The Voice said that Geology is the study of time and pressure. That building (prison) was old and apparently the walls became brittle. It takes 600 years when the building is new. 19 years when the building is old. Andy knew about geology.
Honestly guys the hype around this film is real. The most amazing thing about this film is it wasn't really a box office success, but when it went to VHS Video rental the word got around and it became an utter cult classic watched by millions, it is one of the the greatest films of all time. Great reaction guys we could see you were genuinely moved by it. Incredible to think also that it was only a Steven King short story called Rita Hayworth and The Shawshank Redemption and became this epic film. A film of true hope conquers all, a beautiful ending on the beach after all they had been through with a glorious panoramic shot from above. As you love Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul knew you would love this one.
"For what is evil, but the self seeking to fulfill its own secret needs - all that is necessary is that we face it and choose." Master Po from the T.V. series "Kung Fu."
It was filmed in an old maximum security prison in Mansfield ,OH! My wife and I go to a rock and tattoo festival called Inkcarceration that is held not only on the same grounds, but right next to the prison! Tattoo festival is inside, you can tour the prison, and there are 3 stages of live bands playing just outside for 3 days!
Ugh, I hate that I miss the premiers from the start. I'll have to come back when it's done and watch. Brooks makes me cry every.single.time. I ❤ that you two are watching this. One of my favorites.
You know you can just start a premier at the beginning and close the live chat. Basically the same thing as watching the final video :P Maybe mobile version makes it harder or something I dunno.
And!!! "Andy blew town with over $300,000 of Warden Norton's money" in 2024, $300K (with inflation) would be about 3 million dollars. I always loved that little fact.
I love seeing these movies vicariously through others again. Closest I can get to seeing it for the first time again. This one and LOTR are always a rite of passage movie for any reaction channel. Starwars original trilogy too... everyone is always so surprised by how good that actually is. If you haven't done it yet, that'll be another subscriber surge just like this film. Shout out to Brooks, Tommy, Red and Andy.
I've seen thousands of movies in my life. I have to say this is in my top 100 for sure. Maybe top 10. Thanks for your work and I hope the best for you on your endeavors.
This is the first time I’ve seen anyone posit that red is saying the same spiel for his parole hearings because he knows he will be rejected and doesn’t want to leave. I always thought he repeated himself despite being rejected, not for the purpose of being rejected. Nice observation!
So glad y'all enjoyed Shawshank! One of my all time favs for sure. It's one of the few quality films made from a Stephen King story :D Perfectly casted, top notch acting, writing and directing.
@@indianikit741 Ya, few and far between, hah. There are a number of "decent" films from his books (Running Man, It, Maximum Overdrive, Misery, etc), but the majority are pretty bad (Langoliers, Thinner, The Stand, The Mangler and so on)
Based off the novella Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption within the book Different Seasons. In the book Andy escapes 10 years later in 1976. In the book the stone thrown by the warden is a poster of Linda Ronstadt, not Raquel Welch. Andy also had a poster of Jayne Mansfield in the book. In the book Red really was Irish. Andy, in the book, actually purchased two rock hammers with the second about 15 years after the first and the price had gone up to $22 from $10. BTW, with the movie, 500 yards is nowhere near a half mile as stated.
I had to look it up. Just over a quarter mile? I thought 2 football fields was like a quarter mile 5 football fields seems huge but i have never watched a game.
The smartest man in prison didn't realize that the warden might be upset at suddenly losing a lot of money. The correctional officers never knew that the walls were like dried Play Doh. And somehow Andy knew the wall and tree would still be in Buxton after 19 years. Hmmm.
love youre reactions. U always have such thoughtful things to say. i cant even think about Brooks without tearing up. the fact the bird never showed up...heartbreaking
You guys literally make the best reactions!!! I get so pumped every time yall upload. If you would ever be interested in a different kinda movie. The Kings Speech, is an excellent award winner about history and overcoming disability. It's my all time favorite movie. I would love it if yall wanted to check it out
The scene in the library where Heywood is talking about the book hes holding "the count of monte cristo" .... is also a movie and a really good one at that. Recommended watch!
Steven king is my favorite writer of all time. His stories are so in depth and has awesome twists. My favorite book of his is called “the stand”. They made a mini series a few years ago and it’s really good. They made another one in the 90’s I think but the most recent one is the best. If you’re a reader, I’d definitely recommend the book. It’s a thousand times better than the show which is saying something. Y’all keep up the good work.
Andy's first success was gaining favor with Mr. Hadley on the rooftop. This is what his smile was about. When the warden left Andy's cell holding his Bible, it contained the rock hammer. The smug warden then misquoted the Bible..."Salvation LIES within". When Andy escaped, the warden found Andy's note to him (warden), which corrected the warden's erroneous quote from 17 years ago...."Dear warden, you were right, salvation LAY within". With this, Andy got the last word. When Andy escaped, in 1966, he was seen driving the coast in a 1969/1970 Pontiac Tempest, or Bonneville (I think). Cars from 1966, were box-shaped, as seen with the police cars which arrived to confront the warden. As Red is leaving in the bus, he recites his real last name, when he states, "It's the excitement that only a (Morgan) FREE MAN can feel...".
This to me is just about a perfect movie, and I can watch it every year without getting bored of it. Morgan Freeman is the best. The fact it's a Stephen King story is funny to me since it's not a true horror, but it would be a real-life horror if something like that happened to you.
It's wild to imagine that there are still people today who struggle to read. I imagine they get to the point they're too embarrassed to admit it so they never ask anyone to teach them.
Love watching your reviews cuz it feel like I’m hanging with my peoples. Real ninjas giving the reviews, love this ish. Love this movie, prison ish always gets me. Giving y’all ur flowers early!
You should watch the movie The Count of Monte Cristo from 2002. The book they mentioned looking at the new books in the library. Story about betrayal, prison break, revenge and redemption. Great book. Great movie. You guys will like it!
Great video as always Another movie reaction I've been watching lately is Stand By Me. I'd like to see you gentlemen's reactions. It's also another Stephen King non-horror story
I am so Glad you watched The Green Mile First. I'm sick of people always lumping these two movies together. Yes they both take place in a prison. Yes they were both written by Stephen King. But that's all their stories have in common. I think The Green Mile is superior. This was great . The acting was better in The Green Mile. And if you ask Did this make most people cry and feel heartbreak, most people would say no. But its just my opinion. Bye the way Stephen King preferred ShawShank. Thanks again for another great reaction.😊
