Storyline
Through a series of freak occurrences, a group of actors shooting a big-budget war movie are forced to become the soldiers they are portraying.
Action movie star Tugg Speedman is on the downslide of his professional career. He wants to be considered a serious actor, but his latest serious role as the title character in "Simple Jack" resulted in negative reviews and ridicule. Comedian Jeff Portnoy is best known for his leading roles in sophomoric comedies. Five time Oscar winner Kirk Lazarus is a serious method actor, who immerses himself in whatever the role. Production is not going well since rookie director Damien Cockburn is unable to control the prima-donna attitude of his three stars. Cockburn and Tayback decide that the five primary actors - Speedman, Portnoy, Lazarus, rapper Alpa Chino, and newcomer Kevin Sandusky - need to work together as a unit as did their real life characters.
Robert Downey Jr
Ben Stiller
Jack Black
Bill Hader
Tom Cruise
Danny McBride
Matthew McConaughey

My favorite thing about this movie, Ryan, is how Ben said it all stemmed from watching actors on the set of Empire of the Sun, and later, war-movie actor friends he knew harping on in interviews, DVD extras, talking about how their "training" and the set designs, etc. made it all seemed so intense and "real" for them, and he wondered, basically: "What if an actor went to one of those little week-long 'actor boot camps' and came back with PTSD?"

I really miss Ben Stilller. He went through a lot of emotional and mental health issues, and I can relate, and have nothing but compassion for anyone dealing with that. One of the funniest comedies ever. The bridge seen, with the toddler getting yeeted had me giggling to myself for days after.

Ben Stiller has just directed an INCREDIBLE series, "Severance". That's his series, with Patricia Arquette, Christopher Walken, and John Turturro. Not a comedy (although it is funny at times), but Stiller is definitely still around. Some people are calling that the best series of the year. Dystopian sci-fi. Really good. He's been saying in interviews he wants to do another comedy soon. You'll see him around.

As someone who suffers from bad & persistent anxiety, a bad night’s sleep is definitely a big factor in increased panic attacks/heart rate etc., so you’re not alone there. In regards to the movie, this is one of my favorite comedies. This is such a great poke at all those cliches from those 70’s/80’s films about the war in Vietnam. Apocalypse Now & Platoon are some of my favorite films of all-time & it’s a lot of fun seeing those movies, actors & Hollywood all getting the comedy treatment.

If you decide to watch it, I’d recommend the original, theatrical cut over the Director’s cut or the Redux (which has pretty much become the de facto version now) cut, especially for a first viewing. Tom Cruises had a hand in making this the success it was before it even started filming. Stiller had shown him the script (they’re old friends) and there was no studio element in the film. Cruise told him he needed to add the studio component to help drive the film, so Stiller went back and wrote those sections. Cruise loved the executive so much he told Ben he wanted to play the role on the condition that he had fat hands and he could dance.

This film does set itself apart from a lot of the “Frat Pack” movies with its filmmaking, but also I think modern blockbusters have trained us to only expect competent visual storytelling from art house movies and a handful of big name directors, so when we see the care they’ve taken here for the lighting and cinematography and editing it’s a little jarring. I sometimes think I’m too quick to praise what is really just basic competence. Edit: which is not to say that the filmmaking is actually merely mediocre in this one. It’s really good.

really loved watching someone truly enjoying this movie...AND GETTING IT!! so many other reactors have to get into the moral aspects and try and buffer themselves from backlash for liking this movie..I hate when they get all PC and always have to make sure they mention 'you couldn't make this movie today'..why? funny is funny! I've seen black reactors praise RDJ's performance and that's because they GET IT!! thank you Ryan for laughing your ass off, being authentic, and not being apologetic for it. cheers!

@@RyanCarrington it's like reacting to 'Django' and praising Tarantino one week and watching 'Blazing Saddles' and being outraged at the language the next. if they can see the context in one why can't they do the same with the other? people will rave about the genius of Richard Pryor's cutting edge comedy routines but dismiss 'Blazing Saddles' as inappropriate without realizing he was one of the writers. sorry..just ranting..hypocrisy is a pet peeve of mine.

Loving this reaction....and it just started! "Grindhouse" had trailers as well (great ones!). That had come out the year before, actually. They split it into two movies: "Planet Terror" (robert rodriguez) and "Death Proof" (tarantino). I'm not sure if those trailers are included when you rent/buy either movie, though. (anybody know?). (The movie "Machete" actually originated as one of those "Grindhouse" trailers.) /Yeah, you got the "Platoon" reference; there are TONS of "Apocalypse Now" and "Deer Hunter" references. You were noticing the look of the movie: Stiller is a huge 70s movie freak and he's totally paying homage to those films. (Severance is also spectacular looking, very Kubrickian, Lynchian, and another great 70s director, Alan Pakula come to mind). Definitely hit "Apocalypse Now" and "Deer Hunter" eventually, on or off the channel, those are must-sees! (do the theatrical version of "Apocalypse Now" for a first viewing, not the multiple extended cut versions) PS: My face is sore from watching YOUR face getting sore from smiling! Sometimes I forget how funny this movie is, your edit brought it all back. Thanks, dude!

The only controversy about this film is people who didn’t understand the joke was the Australian actors ( play by RDJ)ignorance. It was a typical case of people feeling like they should be offended without understanding the joke. Feelings are always more important than facts with some people.

The Grindhouse double feature, where Quentin Tarantino's Death Proof was combined with Robert Rodriguez' Planet Terror, is supposed to be seen as a double feature, that is, in one sitting, and it included a trailer for a fictional movie to be seen inbetween the two movies. The trailer for the fictional film was so popular, that the fictional film, Machete starring Danny Trejo, was later released as a full feature. So yeah, there have been other instances of movies having had fictional trailers included, and I named just one other example.

Blackface is a HUGE taboo in the US, but in this case, it's okay because the BF is used to make fun of ego-drven stars in desperate please for awards. Further, this is on of the few Tom Cruise roles I've liked. Pretty kind of him to do the part since Stiller is sort of lampooning HIM!

Well, the controversy started before the movie came out and what ppl thought was that RDJ was playing the role of an african american. He was playing an australian with pigmentation surgery and it was as controversial in world as it would’ve been in the real world. After the movie came out and ppl understood the context, it died down. Especially with the issue itself being a part of the plot and the dialogue.

I don't like Tom Cruise normally...he kinda creeps me out. But he was perfect for this role. And he knew it was a throwaway role, so he just had fun with it and didn't take it too seriously...and I think that gave him a lot of freedom to just play. However, I also wonder if this character isn't far from the real Tom Cruise.

My favorite is the first one titled Sandy Passages where Hader and Fred Armison twist real-life documentary of Grey Gardens. I tried watching the original, but it’s kind of unsettling. If you want find out about the real life girls, there is a movie with Drew Barrymore also titled Grey Gardens. Bill Hader is such a doll!

Robert Downey Jr's performance gets a pass because it's not actually black face. He's not portrayig an african american, he's portraying an actor who is completely dilusional. It's only black face in the reality of the movie. Just wanted to get that out there, because everyone always says he's doing black face. But that term is refering to the time when black people were not allowed to act.

This is one of my favorite comedies of all time. Like top 5 for me personally in fav comedies. This and team america are 2 of my favorite satire comedies that have recently come out and actually tropic thunder may be the last great comedy movie I've seen since it came out. But that's just cuz like alot of today's and even late 2000s and 2010s comedies have not been the best to me. But comedy is extremely subjective and I'm probably just very "picky" when it comes to stuff that legitimately makes me laugh and not just laugh cuz you're supposed to. I'd say talladega nights and step brothers are 2 others of 2000s comedy on till now that stand out to me just off the top of my head. There's probably more but I'm just not a huge comedy person. I an a huge satire fan though. Smart but still hilarious and outrageous satire like tropic thunder and team america is extremely difficult cuz you can easily fuck it up and then it's a shit show and the whole point of the comedy is just gone. It's pretty rare for there to be great satire comedies, especially now because people have confused parody and satire because of stupid ass scary movie 4 5 6 7 8 and wtf ever else parody "comedies" like date movie, or meet the Spartans kinda fucked up peoples idea of what actual good satire or even just good parody is. Besides that it made people still to this day think parody and comedy are the same thing which they aren't but I'm done rambling. Great reaction. Ima subscribe and watch some other reactions you got.
