I really like Magneto and his motivation based on his WW2 childhood experiences. It gives him a solid backstory and reason to judge humanity by his actions that makes him a complex villain .
This movie hints at a solid backstory for Mystique as _well._ A pity this movie didn't delve _into_ it, because _future_ movies in the franchise didn't really do it justice _either._
in the comics, Cyclops has a more important role in the x-men, he is the leader of the team. in the movies he always had a secondary role and was always overshadowed by Wolverine (in the movies)
@@nsasupporter7557 Well, that's a subject of several retcons. In the comic, when he was introduced, he flirted with Jean, who hated his guts. He butted heads with Cyclops, less because of Jean and more because he's a loose cannon and Scott is a bit controlling, and an authority figure. Later writers decided he was in love with Jean, and still later writers decided she didn't hate him after all, and reciprocated his feelings. This happened around the time that Wolverine became the center of the Marvel universe, where absolutely everything was handed to him... he got to be the hero of every story, and got to get the girl, too. EVERY girl, actually.
Magneto is, for sure, a great villain, because he's not just pure evil, his intentions are, in some way, quite understandable. It's just that his actions are way to extreme, maybe also, amongst others, due to his tragic backstory. And Ian McKellen is definitely just the perfect actor to play him.
Love the X-Men actually prefer the team to the Avengers as there a lot more relatable going through common struggle but of course the twist being the Mutant X gene. X-Men came out in a time when Comic's and Superhero movies were still pretty niche at least compared to today so a lot of the more comic aesthetic was lost in hopes of drawing in the more mainstream audience. Casting is on point for character's like Wolverine, Professor X and Magneto for example but the outfits were very... different. Instead of each member having their own unique custom outfit the X-Men were all given Black leather. The Ultimate Universe's X-Men starting in 2001 were highly based on the X-Men movie as writer Mark Millar was only aware of the film version of them. Ultimate X-Men outfit's were also black but went for a more militant design combined with elements of yellow. Ultimate universe was a modern reimagine of the main Marvel universe with the X-Men having some view changes in this universe. New X-Men by Grant Morrison had really cool outfits they were black but had a bunch needed yellow touch making them pop with a massive X. Morrison's amazing invisibles comic's from the 1990s inspired the whole Black Leather look before it was brought into the mainstream. The brought this look to the mainstream while movie's like Spider-Man went for there classic colourful design but X-Men of course followed the Leather look highlighted in Matrix. Back in 1999 Kevin Feige who was 26 at the time was promoted to associate producer on the X-Men while in development. Kevin actually pushed for Comic artistic outfits but no one listened to him thinking it would turn off the mainstream audience, Magneto is the closest to his comic counter part in terms of design. I do love these movies (X1,X2, First Class, and Days of Future Past) but i do wish we got to see more screen time from certain characters like Storm for example. If they ever introduce the X-Men and Mutants into the MCU i would love for them to have a TV show so they could develop each character before coming together as X-Men.
@Mr.Shorty During the 60's,70's,80's,90's and 2000's the x-men were the most famous superhero team in all of Marvel and they dealt with more interesting topics than being your typical group that saves the world that's what the avengers existed for they only know the latter from the movies and before that they never had the fame fantastic four,hulk,spider-man and the x-men
"She's like some king of goddess." - In the comics, before Storm was recruited in to the X-Men, she was being workshipped by tribal people as a goddess.
If Disney ever makes X-Men movies -- they won't continue this 20th Century Fox timeline . They'll make their own origin stories with a cast of fresh faces .
@Magic Magy Cool there is a long way to go to go through this saga but it will be worth it, after this you only have the following ones left X-Men 2 (2003) X-Men 3 The Last Stand (2006) X-Men Origins Wolverine (2009) X-Men First Class (2011) The Wolverine extended cut X-Men Days of future Past the Rogue Cut X-Men Apocalypse (2016) Logan (2017) X-Men Dark Phoenix (2019)
As a kid in the early 90's, X-Men were the ultimate and the first in the now Marvel Universe. There were so many underlying messages that we absolutely picked up on. Racism, hatred and individualism. To be alright with who YOU are. They also could not have cast Magneto, Professor X, Jean Grey or Wolverine any more brilliantly. P.S. This journey gets better and worse...and better again...and worse again. We're glad you chose it and will be there along the way.
To me--- right now--- it ends with "Logan." Don't get me wrong. I'm ready for it to get better again. Just sayin': for me, right now, it ends with "Logan"...
@Jay I mean that there's something about the X-Men that would feel out of place in the MCU. The X-Men are outsiders that fight for people that hate them and the MCU specializes in celebrated heroes.
X-Men and Mutants in the Marvel Universe were meant to be a metaphor for anyone who's ever felt different or an outsider. So anyone who's ever been discriminated against for any reason can be a mutant. So really, we can all be mutants. Adamantium is made from Vibranium.
Magy is so young. I turned 20 the year this came out lol. Magneto is a class 5 mutant. I wonder if she will watch the 2003 Eric Bana Hulk and 2008 Edward Norton Hulk films as well as The Punisher (1989, 2004), Ghost Rider circa (2007), Elektra (2005), and Daredevil (2003). Maybe Punisher: War Zone too. Captain America (1990) with Matt Salinger would be good.
17:40 Don't know if you saw Magy. But Stan Lee was the hot dog vendor on the beach. This was one of his earliest cameos before the mainstream Avenger movies
the mutant registration act, is actually a prelude/nod to the sakovia accords that was introduced in the mcu via cap movie civil war. But in the comics, it lead to a very different version/outcome. also magy she touched him that way, bc of the body scan performed, she knew his claws are held/stored in his forearms, so she just traced the path they take to come out which happens to be inbetween his knuckles. Our muscles in the forearms make it so we can flex our wrist back and forth, side to side, so what kind of muscle(s) to brain connectivity would you have to have to have those claws to pop out on command. Yeah, mutant powers is literally the genetic lottery, you get what you get based on your genes.
Probably the most important fact about X-Men; the actual area in Westchester, NY, where the school is located is right near me. lol I'll tell Charles you said hi. ;) Good luck on all your exams. You got this.
I'm pretty sure Rogue & Wolverine were together at some point in the comics. If/when you get to Days of Future Past, make sure you watch the Rogue Cut.
Facts you didn't know about the movie: Before Hugh Jackman was cast as Wolverine, Dougray Scott was picked to play the character, but due to scheduling conflicts with Mission Impossible 2, he dropped out. Russell Crowe, Aaron Eckhart, Mel Gibson, Sylvester Stallone, Kurt Russell, Kiefer Sutherland, Jackie Earle Haley, Keanu Reeves, Bob Hoskins, Jean Claude van Damme, Viggo Mortenson, Thomas Jane, and Glenn Danzig were considered for the role. Terence Stamp, David Hemblin, and Christopher Lee were considered for Magneto. Lucy Lawless, Maria Bello, Julianne Moore, Renee O'Connor and Selma Blair were considered for Jean Grey. Angela Bassett, Rachel Luttrell, Jada Pinkett Smith, Janet Jackson and Mariah Carey were considered for Storm. Eric Mabius, Jude Law, Tom Cruise, Edward Burns, Jonny Lee Miller, Matt Damon, Ben Affleck, and Owen Wilson were considered for Cyclops. Christina Ricci, Natalie Portman, Evan Rachel Wood, Drew Barrymore, Katie Holmes, Alicia Silverstone, Jennifer Love Hewitt, Katherine Isabelle, and Sarah Michelle Geller were considered for Rogue. Richard Donner, James Cameron, Joel Schumacher, Kathryn Bigelow, John McTiernan, Danny Boyle, Robert Rodriguez, Paul Anderson, Brett Ratner, Stephen Hopkins, Irvin Kershner, Tim Burton and Paul Verhoeven were considered for directing.
according to the movie, the boy Rogue took the life force from woke up a few weeks later. but in the comics, sadly that boy never woke up from his coma
That explains why I was surprised when she said he woke up! (I was never a big reader of comics, but I frequented a coffee shop for 2-3 years that had a small "library" of them for public use, and I remember enjoying the X-Men ones. My subconscious must have remembered about Rogue!)
About the hurting when they come out-part, he means it metaphorically, and how he knew is because he could sense it, Wolverine can sense a smell like a wolf or a dog. Most of the X-Men actually do have foreign nationalities such as Storm who is originally from Africa (in fact in her homeland she was worshipped as a godess because she could create rain) and in some scenes Halle Berry is trying to do some african accent, but she didn't do a good job and for the rest of the movie series she skipped it. Also, yeah, her one liner with Toad never made sense. And Wolverine is actually a canadian, and the yellow spandex joke was a reference to Wolverine's original costume. If I'm not mistaken, adamantium is made from vibranium.
Unless wolvy has slits inbetween his fingers that allows the claws to proceed thru, then yeah they're painful af to come through bc they gotta go from the forearm thru hand bones and thru knuckles. His power is accelerated healing, not pain numbing. yes adamantium is actually a version of vibranium just gained different properties depending on where it landed.
Rouge is close to Wolverine and relates not just because she is also deadly but because she knows his inner pain and a few secrets after touching logan which she chooses to keep to herself
What's funny about this is in real life Sir Patrick Stewart and Sir Ian McKellen (Magneto) have been close friends for years and both have remarked how much they enjoyed playing rivals in these movies
Another great reaction, Magy! Your evil little "hee hee hee" cracked me up! 🤣🤣 Thanks for watching this classic that started Marvel's explosion in the theaters.
"The same thing that happens to everything else" "Was that supposed to be some kind of joke?" The line was written to be read kind of sarcastic with a "Duh" attitude, rather than so grandiose. Joss Whedon wrote that line and it was intended to be very Buffyesc.
Supposedly, in the original script, Toad kept making "Do you know what happens when a toad does x" comments, so this was supposed to be a come-back to that. But they cut them for the final version, so Storm's line seems kind of random.
Agree. 2, and 3 were okay, but not as good. Origins: Wolverine was pretty good other than screwing up Deadpool. The rest got too convoluted and contradictory.
Fun little detail for you Magy. The actor who played Toad in this movie is the same actor who played Darth Maul in Star Wars episode 1: The Phantom Menace. That's why he did the little thing with the stick at the elevator, as an easter egg for Star Wars fans.
Fun Fact: Before Hugh was cast they almost cast Dougray Scott for the role due to him being close to the appropriate hight. But due to Scheduling Conflicts(Mission Impossible 2) he was unavailable. And of course went in and auditioned.
What do you mean "close to the appropriate height"? In the comics, Wolverine is actually quite short (about 5'4" / 162 cm), while Scott and Jackman are both tall (at 6'0" / 183 cm and 6'3" / 191 cm).
Great react! This was a good movie that started the marvel comic movies popularity. Also if you like funny movies watch Ferris Beulers Day off. I think you will enjoy it alot. Thanks!
In case you would find this useful... X-Men films (Phase 1) - X-Men (2000) - X2: X-Men United (2003) - X-Men: The Last Stand (2006) X-Men films (Phase 2) - X-Men Origins: Wolverine (2009) - X-Men: First Class (2011) - The Wolverine (2013) - X-Men: Days of Future Past (2014) X-Men films (Phase 3) - Deadpool (early 2016)
Great reaction Magy!! But please during this X-Men Saga, could you also react to the following: The Terminator - 1984, Terminator 2:Judgment Day (Extended Version) - 1991, Batman - 1989, Batman Returns - 1992, Judge Dredd - 1995, Dredd - 2012 & Superman: The Movie - 1978.
X men timeline : X men first class X men origins wolverine X men X2 X men the last stand The wolverine X men days of future past -new timeline- X men apocalypse X men dark phoenix Deadpool The new mutants Logan Deadpool 2
So will you also be watching the Fantastic Four films which are also part of the MCU? "The Fantastic Four" 1994 [NOT by MCU, Roger Corman had the rights, made this film not intended for release] "Fantastic Four" 2005 [Chris Evans plays the Human Torch before he was Captain America] "Fantastic 4: Rise of the Silver Surfer" 2007 "Fantastic Four" 2015 reboot, cast change "Fantastic Four" 2024 future reboot
In the comics there is just Adamantium.Vibranium is the MCU's name for Adamantim before Disney owned Fox. 20th century fox owned the rights to X-Men and all that lore. In the comics Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver are Magnetos children and Wakanda is where Adamantium is from. MARVEL STUDIOS changed stuff to avoid fox suing them. But now Disney owns fox so they're going to bring in X-Men into MCU.
You should watch Star Trek. Both the TV shows and movies🖖. Fun fact: the actor who played Professor Charles Xavier also played Captain Jean-Luc Picard in Star Trek, specifically Star Trek: The Next Generation. So hopefully you can give Star Trek a chance
Magy, nice comments about the fighting style of Mystique : "She's fighting so elegant, actually! ... It's like she's dancing!" A deadly dance, for sure! ;)
He's also not just talking about physical pain. Every time those claws come out he is identified as a mutant and suffers all the hatred and prejudice that goes with it.
We (me and the 120.000 others fans following you ;) appreciate your reacts video. Remember Mr Hammond : "I'm not making the same mistakes again". And Ian malcolm : "No, you're making all new ones!" Good move to you to apologize about "mistakes you did in the past" but don't think "ignore it like it didn't happen". Mistakes are a good way to learn (not the only way) and should NOT be ignored or forget : use them to avoid future mistakes. Use them to guide yourself in a good way. ;) Kisses from France!
35:51 Oh no! You cuted one of my favorite quote here : Jean, to Logan, about Marie "Rogue" : "She showed the best aspects of your personality..." Me : "Ow... her behavior must have been quite bestial!" XD
Nah you're wrong about that.... I'm here to complain about that.... How could you watch the wrong one first and then go back to the beginning? You aren't allowed to watch these ones anymore, you have to continue watching Only the movies that where made AFTER the first one you started with. See? Complaining is easy. Lmao I did enjoy your reaction to this one though, so I guess I'll allow it.... This Time... Still lmao
Yellow spandex - When Scott asks Wolverine if he'd prefer yellow spandex, it's a reference to the comics, where Wolverine wears a yellow and blue costume. Toad getting struck by lightning - Apparently they cut a bunch of his lines where he kept asking people if they knew things about a toad, so this was Storm using his own joke against him. When you get to X-Men: Days of Future Past, make sure that you watch the "Rogue Cut".
Casting McKellen and Stewart opposite each other and yet allowing them to talk like distant friends was absolutely one of Fox’s better ideas. They are amazing as these two characters and every scene with them together just shows how skilled they are at nonverbal communication.
Can I suggest a movie that I believe would be interesting to see you reacting to? "Team America: World Police". It's gonna be so different from everything you've reacted to so far!!!
1:03 - 1:18 how CUTE!!! I love it 🙂 There are 2 reasons, why Magneto is really good villain: 1) Ian McKellen is great actor with huge charisma and 2) his agenda is believable and reasonable from point of Magneto's view
Oh.. One of my favourite actor is Hugh Jackman. 1:04 This is why I like your reaction, Magy~ 😆🥳🥳 30:10 Only Logan and Mystic know who is real from the time Mystic disguised as Logan. So the moment they see Logan, the other members should have doubted him, but that fake Storm knows he's real without a doubt. So he noticed that she was Mystic
I’m from “Canada” Alberta and I have to carry around a card to prove I’m a first native 😶🌫️ and most reactions of x-men I see people think mutant shouldn’t have to prove themselves. Hopefully People fight for our native rights not made up mutant rights
The actor who played toad, Ray Park, is the same actor who played Darth Maul in Star Wars Episode I. You should watch Blade (1998), the first Marvel movie that proved that Marvel movies could be very popular and be a box office success that has led to all the other movies, and creation though unrelated to the creation of the MCU simply by proving that these kind of stories can make oodles of money.
X-Men comics had so many good stories and characters, and while they altered some of the comic book story for the movie, it worked well. And, yeah, there are a lot of standard and expected plot hooks, but even though it's easy to predict some of the events, they're still very well done. Toad was meant to be horribly gross, and Ray Park played it to the max and perfectly. When he takes the bar out of the elevator and spins it, showing off as you said, just consider that he also played the role of Darth Maul in Star Wars: The Phantom Menace, and his showing off makes sense. Cyclops is a much better character than he was given a chance to be in these movies, but that was true of a lot of them. From students like Bobby (Iceman) and Kitty (Shadowcat, who passes through walls) to standards like Storm and Cyclops, there just wasn't enough attention to go around. And while Rogue is one of my favorites, she's had her moment and is just background going forward, which kinda sucks. While the X-Movies were pretty good overall, they just weren't good at giving a chance for everyone to get some development. The MCU did much better at that, but I suppose they learned from the failures of the earlier movies and made more of an effort towards character development. And while bad actors can limit the characters they play (cough Brie Larson cough), everyone in this movie did really well with what they had to work with. And Sir Ian is always Gandalf to me. Even if I saw him as Magneto first, he's always Gandalf. 🙂
OMG welcome to this crazy world of Mutants! You gotta know the first and maybe the only rule of watching X-Men films, Mag. Never ask about the timeline 😂
At least now you'll be understanding some of the jokes in Deadpool now than what you didn't know then ;) Stan Lee came up with the idea of X-Men based on the racial protests in the 60's and he based Charles Xavier on Martin Luther King and Magneto on Malcolm X. No, no, it's understandable, Magneto is a great villain =)
There is only 1 Xmen who volunteered to be a mutant, he is Deadpool, and his movies should be in your Xmen journy. Ignore his character in Wolverine Origins, they screwed up in that movie. If they follow the comics, look for him to join the MCU Avengers
I don't know how much you know of American politics and social issues, but Professor Xavier and Magneto are directly compared to Martin Luther King and Malcolm X as the X-Men were created as a forum to express the civil rights movement in superhero form.
For anyone interested or that cares, who might be struggling with the timeline of these X-Men movies, the chronological timeline goes something like this (according to Wikipedia, anyway) : Original Franchise (X-Men Trilogy + Wolverine/Logan Trilogy + Deadpool) : X-Men Origins : Wolverine (set in 1845-1970s/1981, released in 2009) X-Men (set in 2000, released in 2000) X2 : X-Men United (set in 2003, released in 2003) X-Men : The Last Stand (set in 2006, released in 2006) The Wolverine (set in 2013, released in 2013) Deadpool (set in 2016, released in 2016) Deadpool 2 (set in 2018, released in 2018) Logan (set in 2029, released in 2017) Reboot Franchise : X-Men : First Class (set in 1962, released in 2011) X-Men : Days Of Future Past (set in 1973, released in 2014) X-Men : Apocalypse (set in 1983, released in 2016) X-Men : Dark Phoenix (set in 1992, released in 2019)
3:38 right but sadly even In “Canada” we natives already have to carry around a treaty card/ a special ID to say if we’re native or not . Now let ask people SHOULD we natives have to? Like there trying to make mutants carry cards?
29:41 Storm: "Do you know what happens to a toad when it's struck by lightning?" 2000 me: 😃 "Oh, cool. She's gonna _quip._ It sounds like it's gonna be somethin' really _clever,_ too. What happens, Storm?" Storm: "The same thing that happens to everything _else."_ 2000 me: 🤨 "But... I mean... I thought you were gonna _quip._ I thought you were gonna _zing_ 'im with a clever _put_ down. I mean, _shoot,_ Storm. Why talk at _all?"_
Vibranium might be stronger than adamantium but it is however not nearly as dense so a properly committed strike from Wolverine's claws to Captain America's shield can actually significantly damage his shield
13:15 Adamantium is slightly less durable than vibranium but is much denser, in a fight with captain America in the comics wolverine actually cut through captain Americas shield with his claws. Adamantium is known as the strongest substance in the MCU.
Yeah Logan and Jean do love each other but it's a painful love...like if only we had meet a few years ago type of Love...also it's a mental love relationship...you can be sure Jean has dived into Logan's mind a few times when she wants some animalistic dirty love with Wolverine
Yeah All the Xmen movies are a Hit or Miss you should do the 3 Wolverine movies too the 3rd one Logan is my Favorite Xmen movie till this day.But if you decide to do the Wolverine movies do All the Xmen first so you won't get any Spoilers for Logan the 3rd Wolverine movie
i'm not surprised you're shipping logan and jean. there is supposed to be a love triangle going on between logan, scott, and jean, but tbh, i never really dug it. both scott and logan separately have good chemistry with jean, but their squabbling over her always struck me as, like, demeaning? as if they could decide for her who she should choose. but i guess that's kinda the nature of all love triangles in movies. in these movies, i do prefer jean and logan as a couple, but in most other media, i don't really ship him with anybody.
