To those who are filming, doing the behind the scenes work to get these videos out along with all of us who are watching: What a gem we are able to witness as Leon shares his tremendous knowlege and love of gardening. Leon, you radiate with knowlege, honesty, integrity and exude a breath of fresh air from past generations that have helped build everything that has meaning in our lives. Great job to all of you, especcially you Leon. Keep up the great work!!!!!
Hi Leon. I found your channel while researching how to properly care for tomato plants. I. Have been in Texas since 04/21. My father passed away from coronavirus on 04/19. He was an Army Vet, retired railroad machinist, and PROUD GARDENER... I have been tending to his garden since he passed and have been researching plant care- specifically tomato plant care. The smell of the leaves remind me of dad... it’s important to me to keep them alive because my daddy was so proud of his garden. Your videos have helped me so much. Thank you for sharing all of your tomato plant care and information. Have a blessed day.
I remember as a kid (hate to admit that we are talking over 60 years and more) that my grandmother, as spring got closer, would take a baking potato or sweet potato and place it in a clear jar of water to let it sprout roots. She was raised on a farm in North Carolina and could grow almost anything. I on the other hand, need Leons help so everything I touch will FINALLY stop dying on me ....lol.
Leon. My Uncle Earl always told me you needed to wrap a potato in newspaper before planting. When I asked him why? He said, “ it keeps the dirt from getting in that poor potato’s eyes. “
More pure good horse sense from one who knows. I love that you have worked the bugs out of this system to make it possible for practically anyone, even with arthritis and physical problems like me, to grow stuff. Bless you and your videos! Love from arkansas!
There are so many videos for every type of gardening, every type of crop, and all sorts of hacks and shortcuts. But there's nothing like hearing "how to" from the farmers who have been doing it for years... and now with RU-vid, most will likely be available to watch for years. We are truly blessed!
Great video! Sure do love to hear this man talk and tell us children some of what he knows. He really makes me think of my grandpa. Thank you for that too, Leon.
Found you yesterday Leon, love your channel. I haven't grown tomatoes in 20 years. My grandfather use to grown a spectacular garden, lost him in '98. You remind me of him, thanks for sharing your immense gardening knowledge
Im glad to know yall are healthy and well! All of the tubs I made last year worked great and are now growing this years potatoes, carrots, chicory, etc. I used the same principle in very large flower pots for some espaliered fruit trees and they are thriving! Mr. Leon thank you so very much for teaching so well@
Thank you Leon for sharing your gardening knowledge, you truly a gift from the Lord to teach his children to grow their own food to sustain themselves and those around them !!!
As always saving money by watching your videos. I just had it in my mind I needed tomato clips, now I’m just going to wrap the string around like you showed. Leon always teaching and I’m always listening!
This has been one crazy season but I got around 22 tomatoes on my vines. Cucumbers on the vines, eat my 1st mess of squash, potatoes are good, egg plants blooming, watermelons are good, green beans good blooming,I'm in south Georgia
Thank you for another great video Leon. I have several tomatoes on my wicking tubs as well. I just made 7 more tubs today to transplant more of my crops.
Mr Leon, thank you so much for sharing your knowledge with us in your videos. I get to think back to my Granddads garden, he owned a feed store in Sand Springs, Ok, and he taught all us grandkids to garden. I'm just thankful Daniel Arms introduced me to your channel. God bless you & yours.
Thank you for the video, you answered a lot of the questions I had about growing potatoes. I am one of the people up North you’re helping I live in SW Washington.
I found new potatoes growing already this year from potatoes I planted last year in my no till garden. They were ones I must have missed. They're mixed in with my garlic I planted last November 2019. My husband planted 72 potatoes this year.
Thank you, Leon! I've started a garden for the first time with 18 of your self-wicking tubs. They are doing great. One thing I noticed, you put 2 potatoes in one of the holes and none in the middle, just an FYI! Great video! Thanks again.
.... just a suggestion.... if you find your plant needs more water...you can add more wicks up from the bottom... I used cotton mop head threads...there easy to poke up into the bottom ...bunch them together if needed...
For when for the time ye ought to be teachers, ye have need that one teach you again which be the first principles of the oracles of God; and are become such as have need of milk, and not of strong meat. - Hebrews 5:12 I have been gardening in one form or another for 30 years. Yet every time I watch one of your videos I learn some new way to approach it. Thank you Sir.
This video is right on time. Growing in Northeast PA. Hard to get seed potatoes now. Thank you for sharing all the savy with those of us who are less experienced
Thank you Leon! I really look forward to your videos. Started about 10 wicking tubs with vegetables this year because of you. And i have more on the way! Such a great way to grow food! God bless you! How about more strawberry videos? And do you grow those tomatoes from seed? Amazing!
Thank you! I love your videos! I just tossed a baking potato from the house in my garden too! While my seed potatoes are about as tall as your tomato plants, the baking potato is slow going. I hope my tomato plants grow up to be like yours!
Wow... didn't know that piece about having to polinate in the sun! 🐝 What is that black cover you have over the tubs? It looks thick. 🍅🍅🍅 The last two bags of organic Yukon Gold potatoes I have bought over the last month or so have potatoes with chits 🌱, growing eye sockets, or roots. 😆 Those babies are all being planted because I'm not wasting them. I just wish I could get my hands on some of those tubs. In the meantime, I looked back in your videos and found your tutorials on self wicking grow bags. Yowza!
I’m so glad you did this video. I can’t find seed potatoes anywhere not even online so I was trying to figure out what the difference was between seed and regular potatoes. Thank you so much
Please make a demo of planting sweet potatoes in the wick buckets. Or just tell me how many slips do you plant in one wick bucket. Thanks. Enjoy the videos. Keep them coming.
Question...... Mr Leon, How do you know when to harvest the potatoes?? I Absolutely love the fact that you are sharing your gardening knowledge. Thank you! God Bless you kind sir!!
Thank you. I am praying that last night was our last frost. Ky is behind this year. I'm not sure if we are going to have a spring this year. It looks like we are going straight into summer. blessings to you
A couple of questions: What percent of shadecloth should you use for the greenhouse? When putting small plants or seeds in a wicking pot, how much watering from the top of the pot should you do and how long to get the plants established in the wicking bed? Thank you! We love your videos and Leon!
All the seed potatoes are sold out everywhere. I'm planting store bought potatoes, that are non organic because that is all I could get, and they are sprouting. I am going to try to prove that the "seed potato" idea is a partly myth. I tried to sprout some red Norlands that were grown in Idaho and they did not sprout, but the russets I bought that were grown in the Texas panhandle have sprouts all over them, so maybe the red Norlands were treated the the russets weren't, I don't know. Thank you for this video Leon. It was very timely for me and greetings from south central Texas.
singncarpenter i have had successful volunteer grocery potatoes every year both yukon gold, unknown red skinned varieties and some blue ones. For the last 5 years I have tossed in sprouted grocery ones with my leftover seed potato offspring and they do fine.
Thank you so very much! You are the very best and I appreciate it. I live in central Florida and it gets re hot here especially in the summer. Please give us a recipe for the soil you make. Looking all over to find it. Thank you. Jean
Thank you Leon for sharing all of your knowledge! I am looking forward to making a trip to a Kingston to pick up supplies for making self watering pots if you still have some pots available???
🌻 Good Morning Leon from the Carolinas and Happy Sunday! Thank You for all that you share and do! I’m going to try a bucket of potatoes. I wonder how many potatoes might grow in one bucket, like the way that you planted yours this morning? Thank You Sir ❣️
How did the potatoes planted in the container do? How much was the yield? We are trying decide if we need a wicking buckets or just plant them in the bucket and water once a week.
Grocery store potatoes are often sprayed with sprout inhibitor and they will not sprout so they have a longer shelf life that’s why it is not advisable to use grocery store potatoes but use actual seat potatoes.
Question 1: How often do you need to shake/pollinate a tomato plant? Question 2: What's the difference between a 5-5-5 fertilizer & a 20-20-20 fertilizer? Would I mix it different for a gal of water?
I was curious to your masterblend formula for the tomatoes. Do u just use the masterblend or do u use the calcium nitrate and Epson salt that comes with it as well and what is your ratio?
I've been enjoying your videos learning a lot this year I just built on my first Greenhouse seems to be working good but I would like to know where and how I can get ahold of those planting pots that you keep talking about thank you and God bless
Try to find a local cattle archer in ur area that feeds food and minerals in tubs to his cows. Go to a feed store and ask them if they know where u can get some if they have a board to post on at store. Post on it what ur looking for with ur contact #.
Ok I've looked through some of your videos but don't see anything mentioning this: root rot. I've got a whole lot of tubs from Menards ready for tomatoes and other vegetables. I've already made 2 wicking tubs already with carrots and radishes/onions going and they seem to be doing well so far. Since I've already lost some young tomato plants under lights indoors to root rot, I'm getting nervous about moving them to the tubs here in a couple weeks (southern IN). Should I put less water in them until I get to the warmer months? Maybe even just water them from the top for now and wait until mid June to water down the tube? Also, what plants would not do well in wicking tubs? So far I've figured that I'll put my bell pepper and habanero plants in 5 gallon buckets with regular drain holes on the bottom since they don't require as much water.
I built tubs & planted tomatoes but my leaves are curling & some look yellow. What’s wrong? They have water & fertilizer. It’s been hot & humid (Lincoln,NE). Is there a way to get photos or a video to you?
Do you use the same kind of fertilizer and minerals that you use on tomatoes for every other kind of vegetables like bell peppers, corn, squash, purple hull peas, etc.?
I've never had a problem. If you can get the organic, that's what I prefer. But even the ones that aren't, they still start to grow those eyes. Thats usually when someone would they're them away. The only potatoes that I've not seen grow eyes are the purple/black potatoes. Haven't figured those out. It's all an experiment any way. Just try it out!😄
