Today, October, 30, 2021 the Old Colony & Newport Railway ran a work train to cut brush at "Piers" on the Newport Secondary Line in Middletown, RI. Since 2014 the Old Colony has not run any regularly scheduled trains and has truncated operations to charters and as needed work trains meaning trains run less often. The line the OCN operates on currently has three separate operations along it's 13 miles of track. These two other operations, Newport & Narragansett Bay RR and Rail Explorers, use the line north of Milepost 4 regularly leaving the southern stretch currently out of regular use. The southern 4 miles of the line run through Middletown into Newport, RI where the track is currently out of service due to a Rail with Trail project. The last train on the south end ran in June 2021 which was also the last run over the now removed Newport "East Track" ( • LAST TRAIN: Locomotive... ). The OCN work train ventured to Milepost 1 after cutting brush and was the first train in four months. Once the Rail with Trail project is completed the south end of the rail line will see more use. Until then the OCN will continue to operate as needed trains over the line to keep is active.
This video was filmed on the south end of the railroad between Mileposts 1 and 2 on the Newport Secondary Rail Line in Newport, RI. The work train is documented operating over the sporadically used track and shows a runby near Milepost 2.

I love seeing rarely used lines come back to life. My hometown had one and it is now used twice daily.

From the looks of that locomotive the rail line isn't the only thing that is rarely used.

That railbed as well as the rail track needs a whole load of work doing on it.

Every time I see these videos, it just drives home that those lines need to reconnect with a mainline somewhere. Shame they can't rebuild the bridge over Sakonnet River.

Why can't they?

Same problem with the swing bridge over the Cape May Canal in NJ that was damaged 9 years ago during Sandy..it could connect with many points north to bring people,to the heart of town, but it will never be rebut. Traveled it on a rail bike which is another way these unused rails come to life.

As an otherwise good condition 20 mile-ish segment of our main, used to interchange with NS in Streator, IL. But the gistoric lift bridge beds millions in pier abutment upgrades, so o.o.s. except for rare storage moves with only a few empties at a time.

So, I have a wild proposal. What if there was a modern light rail system that goes to & from Newport to Melville to Bristol Ferry in Portsmouth? People could park there and ride the train to Newport and wouldn't have to worry about parking in Newport. That would ease auto traffic in the warm months.
@davidpaull959
@davidpaull959 2 года назад
They could technically do it now with the dinner train cars. Would probably be cost prohibitive though.

This is one GE1 or GE2 type loco, very old model , spare parts are rarely available . If it requires repair for some fault, it will be difficult to fit the locomotive. So it should be replaced ASAP.
@johnpatterson4272
@johnpatterson4272 2 года назад
In-earnest this line needs new rails, ties and road bed to be viable, yet it is the positive spirit of those involved who will bring it back to life. There appears to be 'working' businesses on either side of the tracks for almost the duration of the video, that adds 'plausibility' to a renewal for rail traffic. There exists the tools and obviously the talent, so make it happen America.

Watch a few videos of 700mm gauge sugar cane railways in Java and you'll come away thinking this track is Class I!! It looks "old" but is generally in good line/surface. I don't get the intermittent piles of stone ballast though.
