First Walks and Puppy Socialisation for a Well Balanced Puppy. #5

The fifth in the series of the Puppy Training Journey looks at how important it is to be proactive with early puppy socialisation and the first walks right from the outset to help achieve a well balanced puppy.
When acquiring a puppy at the ideal age of 8 weeks, you have a good 6 weeks until the 14-week mark, whereby it is widely recognised that the socialisation period comes to a close. You can and should continue with your efforts after this period, but this time should be seen as the 'Golden window of opportunity' as the puppy brain is developing.
Everything that you can expose a puppy to prior to that point in time in a calm, safe and controlled way allows your puppy to take these new things on board with a minimum of fear and as a result, you create a well-balanced puppy that can interact with dogs, people and to accept various environments and the associated sounds.
This video shows virtually every outing we made with Ruby in her first week. This includes car journeys, which she has had every day (best way to prevent car sickness is to get out daily) to lovely walks in the woods meeting dogs and people.
The puppy pouch is invaluable and can be seen here on Amazon: amzn.to/2Q9gcNq The Flexi lead we use can be seen here on Amazon: amzn.to/2SqL12e

Hi I have read in several places online not to take a puppy to a local place with other dogs without completion of the second vaccination. Like you suggest in the video it’s important to get them familiar with new surroundings. I notice you carry them and only put down when no other dogs around. Is them being held and seeing dogs enough? I suppose the advantage you get is Ruby can interact with your dogs. I will only have the one. I just want to balance improving the dogs social skills but keeping them well and healthy.

The benefits far outweigh possible concerns in my opinion as early, safe social exposure is essential for a well balanced dog. Keep off the ground in busier doggy areas and otherwise get out every day from 8 weeks. As a result, Ruby is probably the best socially balanced dog I’ve owned, though the breeder also played her part on the 8 weeks of rearing before we had her. Thank you.

Hi Nick...... Loving the Videos!! We have a 14 week Cockerpoo and have been thinking of taking her to a quiet place and letting her have a walk, she has had her first set of inoculations.... I was just wondering at what age did you let Ruby walk around in the public place?

Just be careful where you put your dog down. Keeping them locked away from social exposure to humans, other animals and a variety of experiences during the socialisation period can lead to a dog that is anxious, nervous and struggles to be social in later life. Ruby has developed into a well balanced dog, free from anxieties as a result of a thorough and careful socialisation. Thanks

Your vet will be able to give a definite answer based on the shots and age of the puppy.

Hey Nick, how would you recommend an 8-14 week puppy socializing in the current COVID 19 situation?

As of now, your options are getting very close to ‘as normal’, so I’d take that approach now whilst remaining alert to the social distancing recommendations- assuming you’re in the UK.
