Yeah the bulkheads rot out on these, especially early ones and would be horrendously expensive to rectify I suspect but if someone has the resources and inclination I guess anything can be brought back to life and prices have always been high once restored.
Anyone else wishing he'd put the TFR nozzle in spray mode rather than stream, it looked painful? Where was the drill brush those seats have a lot of potential?
Yep, I was thinking the same all the time, terrible spray pattern... I was thinking the bottle didnt have a spray setting, or what would be the reason for the concentrated stream? Seen him do it before many times I think, he must have a reason if spray is availible to not use it?
I’m wondering why you spray product on a “jet” rather then “mist” from the bottle (eg. The TFR). Surely you would get an even spray from a mist rather than one concentrated line from a jet 🤷🏻♂️
What an absolute beauty just waiting to be brought back to life! These are the oinnacle of Mercedes engineering and classy design. Great job considering the scale of badness! Great video Matt.
Not sure I’m liking those nozzles on those bottles. Are you sure that nozzle doesn’t twist to a spray action rather than a direct hit. There doesn’t seem to be a evenly coverage?
if it has been sitting from 2005 onwards and those acorns, rat droppings and empty snail shells are not planted there by you; I could bet good money on those air intake orifice is clogged up too. checking the air filter if it's in one piece also wouldnt hurt. great video
The definition of a worthless car. Sorry to say, but thing is way beyond saving, its now just a pile of rusty scrap with possibly a few salvageable parts to sell on.
Great Job Matt! Anything detailing and flipping is great content 👍 And a shout out for that amazing Stevensons high mile c class in the background as the work horse!
The R107 is one of the best Mercs (up there with the W123). I was at my local Mercedes dealer last week and in the showroom they had a W198 300SL Roadster and a 1984/85 R107 380SL The next time I'm there I'll be taking photos of these cars. They're both in beautiful condition.
Your both braver men than me gunga din , wouldn’t have gone within 10 yards of it without gloves, masks and bio hazard suits on Matt , but a great design classic worth saving if possible, good content 👍🏻.
Very nice, Matt! I am SOOOO tempted to buy one for occasional use if I had the space, and to an extent the fuel consumption is a put-off. Congratulations to Steve despite the challenges ahead! In terms of long-term storage, one suggestion made to me was to use fabric softener sheets stuffed in all the places that rodents like to visit. I don't know how effective it is, but rodents can be very naughty, indeed eating much of the wiring of my brother's Honda Fit years ago. I love the pre-1995 Mercedes models that were built to last and had some modicum of exclutivity. The Mercedes models of the present day are "a dime a dozen" as we yankees say, and to me simply uninteresting, gaudy things traded in every three years for the next lease. The traded models go to the next owner, and if things go wrong, what does Mercedes care? The car was not purchased new by this owner, and they can make money off this person with repeat visits to the dealership service department for all the official manufacturer equipment, like air for the tires.... But getting back to the pleasant classics of the past, I still see some around occasionally despite my area being primarily new car territory. Additionally, I notice them for sale quite often. I will look at this post in the future and think...."If you were so tempted, why didn't you buy one when you could afford it?!!!!!" Cheers, and thanks for the FD update!
Ordinarily I am a great M-B fan but I rather liked the look of that Mk1.5 Ficus parked behind. Before trying to start it I would have removed the plugs and blown some fogging oil in.
That's going to be one of those projects where a 10p sized rust hole turns into needing a complete new panel. It will be a lovely car when it's done. But it will need just as much as it could be worth spent on it to get it there.
Step 1 disconnect petrol supply from tank Step 2 . Test ignition for spark. Step 3 clean ignition points and determine coil function. Step 4 check Calibrator and air filter Step 5 inspect belts. Step six coolant level.. Step 7 supply fresh petrol . Step 8 say a brief prayer.
Yeah, always wondered how Bobby Ewing managed to drive his SL with the roof on if it rained as he was so tall. Luckily the $un Always $hines on TV...I mean Dallas!
Nice Mercedes Matt exterior looks pretty good I personally wouldn’t be sitting or touching that interior if it has had rats in there they urinate as they walk about weils disease all over it had a friend who nearly died before Xmas because of rats caught weils
You need a proper pre-spray bottle that's no good to put on T.F.R YOU NEED TO COVER ALL OF THE CAR IT'LL SAVE YOU TONNES OF WORK THE WASH IS ABOUT 80% OF THE WORK
When this was parked / abandoned you could still buy a new Rover 75. It’s realistically only fit to be trailered to the NEC Restoration Show as a static display, or stripped systematically to reveal why you should really NOT take on something like this. This sort of thing has always been driven to within an inch of its life and left out of sentimentality rather than being broken at a specialist.
Well Matt, you owe me a lunch.!! I as good as puked watchin this at my lunch break. Yes it can be saved but not without a major amount of work/cash. Mercs of that age/Audi's too were made from recycled Panzers 🤣. You would need to get the pros. in to sort that out. A week in a dip tank and a couple of days of dip in the other tank. For me that would be a lifetime project. 😂
No gloves, no masks, yikes!!! Probably a rat or three lodged in the throttle body/air filter! Hey Matt, perhaps you could find a nice example in the summer and do a review on it with the top down? I do love these cars, one seriously cool design!
Cars in this condition used to be advertised as 'ready for restoration'! I recall a customer coming in for wheel balancing, after hitting a really bad pothole. There was a lump twice the size of that one in a sidewall...and on a nearly new tyre too, he was not best pleased.
That's an absolute money pit in the making. 7 or 8 years ago you'd be lucky to pull a grand for that , but mysteriously now with a cost of living crisis and a general shortage of money , it'll be 3 or 4 times that. Strange world innit !
Those Diamondbrite products did nothing! All their stuff has never been any good, reminds me of the extras you’d get charged for by a slimy used car salesman trying to flog your a protection pack😂
I'm glad I hadn't eaten before watching this video as I was dry reaching enough just looking at all the filth that was washing off it and I must say it's not quite what you have in mind when you think of a Mercedes and a near 20 year old 'hedge' fund!!...🤮
I adore 107’s, probably the most elegant and classy car ever but this was a complete waste of time and effort. Btw that particular Karcher cannot take the skin off a rice pudding
Paint on the bonnet and boot lid, are you kidding ?. Its almost a lost cause. Its going to need £6000 into the bodywork alone just from what i can see.
Love your videos and enthusiasm but a little constructive feedback; a car this dirty and biohazard is beyond the capabilities of the home hobbyist cleaning equipment you are using
If a Mercedes k-jetronic engine sits for many years there's no chance it will start before you sort the entire fuel system, that mean lots of parts and lots of work
I'm thinking even Diamondbrite isn't going to make this recovery example sparkle! To be honest though, impressed at how easily the ingrained yuck came off and that Bisen did an impressive first clean on those seats. Saying that though, it would take a very brave person to take this on... I don't even think Matt would consider this (although after seeing your Mini project I never dismiss anything now). Great work Matt, and good luck for whoever buys this classic!
I bought the ceramic snow foam from Diamondbrite that you featured in a previous video. It’s a great product. The dirt just fell away after a few minutes…. but, while the product itself was just over £8 with your discount code it cost over £20 when the postage to Belfast was added. I’d try more of their lines but not with those costs! There is free postage for orders over £20, & I was going to add a few more items, but then I noticed it doesn’t apply to here. Gripe over.. great video as usual!
The first time I tried to watch I got no sound. Second time is a charm. That car is beautiful indeed. I do not think that spec was even offered in Canada. From what I see, fabric upholstery was not, only a choice between MB Tex or leather. Given the price class these were fighting here in Canada, power windows, lock, and likely seat were standard fitment. Do love the sound of one of them, too
