Tyler’s lyricism is brilliant. This was one of their early releases. Someone actually stole his car radio when he was in college. He was running late and forgot to lock the door. He couldn’t afford to replace it so he was trapped alone in his car with his thoughts. He was struggling with mental health issues, so it was a dangerous place for him to be. “I could pull the steering wheel” is a reference to suicidal thoughts. The rest of the song is a message of hope and shows the power of music. But at the end, he’s alone and takes off the mask - his hair is back and when he falls off the stage there is no one to catch him. When dealing with mental health issues, it’s often a cycle that’s hard to break. Many of their songs tackle deep topics but they often pair it with uplifting music. Their live performances are unreal! The connection they have with their fans is special. And yes, Tyler has incredible control over the audience 😼 I agree with recommendations for Migraine as well as Holding Onto You (Live at the Fox Theater), Ode to Sleep, Fairly Local, and Heavydirtysoul

People often cut their hair when having a mental breakdown that's why he cut it. 21 pilots got me through a lot growing up and now that I'm older it helps me when I'm anxious and even my son loves them.

I’m a 58 year old woman and my son who is now 29 introduced me to this two men band. We love their music. They collaborated with Mutemath. Awesome! My son is a musician and covered one of mutemath’s song and got a shoutout from the band.

I'm almost 40 and have been a fan of theirs since the beginning. The shaving of the head is to show self harm in bad moments looking at yourself in the mirror. The mask when he goes on stage and becomes "someone else" is best described in my next reaction recommendation, MY BLOOD!!!! Shows how when you don't want to be yourself anymore, you put on a mask and pretend your ok in public. I do this everyday. The fall at the end is him returning to reality, falling out of this place in his head. Also best described by THE HYPE. All their songs have meaning, and deeply "stay alive lyrics." He openly talks about depression, without talking about it. "I could pull this steering wheel." In this song is about purposefully crashing your car and ending your life. It's just a lyric, just like a twinkling thought in the back of your head when your super depressed and driving. You see it my man, but you haven't gotten it quite yet, hope this helps!! Sorry to hear about your stepmother! You're right, fans have a lot of respect for them but their concerts are way bigger now and don't know the crowd could be that still anymore. The song is about when Tyler's car radio was actually stolen and he couldn't afford to replace it and he realised how much he used music to distract him from his thoughts. I think he's saying that it's hard and even dangerous at times to let your thoughts wander but also that it's important to experience sometimes to ask the big questions that scare you and allow yourself to think.

This was the song that started me on my Twenty One Pilots journey. I immediately fell in love with the deep meaning of how the music is his escape. Music has always been that for me throughout my life. Then I saw the video -- I loved how the audience put the "music" (Tyler) back on the stage. There is a mutual respect between the fans and the band. This band is amazing!

You were almost spot on. When the emotions and bad feelings get to be too much he uses the music as an outlet and can go back to himself when he's done. Cutting the hair is an old sign of mental distress, pulling the steering wheel is unaliving ideation, and when he's done he takes off the mask and his hair is back. TOP is amazing with the layers in the lyrics.
