ok let me explain it clearly so that you understand. Barnard and columbia have very different acceptance rates and very different academic standards to get in. when someone uploads videos claiming that they go to columbia when they really go to barnard is just clickbait and scummy. I go to columbia and it hurts me to see someone using my university to promote themselves on social media because the work I put in to get into this ivy league university is completely different from the effort she put in and we all know that.
Why do you study so many different subjects at college? In England we specialize in one, maximum two subjects at university over the 3 years you're at Uni and you only go to lectures and seminars about that one subject - we don't have to do maths, science, English, French on top of that too!
Michaela Benson We do 2 years of lower division courses for our major plus general education (math, science, history, English, etc). The other 2 years are upper division courses for our major. At my school in California, we must also take extra electives for courses outside of our major. It’s too much, in my opinion. 😭
This is still generally true, especially in Junior and Senior year. However, Columbia has a tradition called the Core Curriculum, which ensures that all students (even the engineers!) receive a holistic well-rounded liberal arts education. Barnard, Columbia's sister school, has a similar curriculum called "The Nine Ways of Knowing" IIRC. Essentially in their first two years, students take courses that cover Western literature, history, arts, music, and economics. These courses are usually ~15 students and are taught in the Socratic method. It is a hallmark of Columbia education (UChicago also has a Core Curriculum), but certainly not done at every single college. Some U.S. colleges have a more straightforward approach where you only take coursework relevant to your major.
I also enjoyed your first week at Columbia University 😊 Thank you for sharing it 😄 PS. Your friend (with the yellow/mustard tank top) kinda looked like Dua Lipa 💞
This popped up in my recommendations and it brought up such good memories. Hewitt had the best thin-crust pizza and I miss the amazing ballet classes at Barnard! Hope you enjoy your time; it goes by in a heartbeat.
Love Barnard. Especially the dance department. Take any class with Marjorie Folkman. She’s an amazing teacher. All the instructors in the dance department are top notch. You’ll have an amazing time. (I graduated from Columbia last year)
so nice to see you going through your first week! i can tell you really excited and happy with the decision. And i know this whole transition of a new life at a new college has been great for you. i hope things go well for youuu xx
In the US, for the most part, your first year or two is focused on a variety of classes (some general requirements, some of your choice) and from there you apply into your major, and to grad school
Welcome to Columbia! I'm one of the pastors at the church next door (Riverside). If you're ever up this way stop in and ask the front desk for me and I'll show you the incredible views from the top of the church!
Can you please get me a Columbia Latinx pullover (usually sold for Columbia University Fundraisers)? To the haters at least I tried to ask as a subscriber, who knows if she will answer.
When i saw the 2:40 i think i remember some netflix series which i forgot the title, filmed in columbia university. I think it's about some wolf thingy nvrmnd.
This is so interesting to watch. Ive taken some Columbia classes but I’m not actually a student and it’s so cool to see what some of my classmates might be doing during the day. I’m glad you’re liking it! :)
