I actually studied abroad in Preston, England in the northwest, and then in Utrecht, Holland. Emptiness prevailed at the very beginning. Your vulnerability triggered that memory for me. And it’s inspired me to tell you not only does it get better, you emerge more empathetic not only with others but also yourself. I see in the vlog theses lessons are realizing themselves. i think the most important thing about living abroad is that life gets no better because of being in a different country, it is only you and the people around you that can make it good (i've been living in a different continent for two years by now)

this is so true, we are so subjective and everything we perceive comes from the internal, we're still essentially living in our own heads and if we're not in a good well-being, nothing externally would change that. LOL IDK IF THAT MAKES SENSE

It might looks aesthetically pleasing to go to an art school and live this life but in reality there is nothing aesthetical about it and it's just stressful journey full of competition, jealousy and misfortune

grew up in Plymouth, it's an okay city, but take time to make day trips to some of the outdoor spaces nearby! I would recommend catching the cremyll ferry and walking to cawsand, and if you can, go out to the Moors, specifically wistmans wood - it's said to be where the druids used to meet and is still the most beautiful ancient woodland I've seen to this day. Devon and Cornwall have so much folklore if you want to look for it, stone circles, and stories of the fae and the devil are all about!

I hope you really enjoy art school , the friends I made at uni are still best friends 28 years later. I always dreamed of going to art school I did marine biology instead. I am doing more art now mostly self taught. Love your painting. It takes a bit of time to get used to a new place but enjoy the adventure.

Welcome to England! If you need cheap canvases you could try going to a shop called the works (also sells some art supplies) or they’re pretty easy to make yourself ❤

Those thoughts can be very scary. I moved away for culinary school as a single mom at 21, but I had to share custody of my son, so when he was gone, it was like I didn’t know who I was anymore. I know that feeling of being around those you love one moment, laughing, singing, dancing, only for them to be ripped away from you the next moment and your thrust back into a dif life. It’s confusing, frustrating and your heart breaks. I do know though, that it does get better, and those feelings, while VERY VALID, can also be spun into other things❤ Like self care, self reliance and most importantly freedom of expression. Sure, you are who you are bc of those you love, but that’s not ALL you are. Take comfort in knowing that you know yourself best, and allow yourself to trickle down that river of unknown. Just don’t stay in those feelings of emptiness. Acknowledge them, feel them and then, let them fuel you to a new and developing part of yourself. Also, if you’re introverted like me, you DONT have to make best friends to feel connection. Encouraging the barista making ur coffee, helping an old man at the grocery, those all are just as important as making besties. Good job, sis. What a most exciting adventure you’ve started! I’m a Spanish student also studying in the U.K. full time, and even though I’m familiar with the culture, I want you to know that I really related to you saying that there’s no one to connect with. I thrive on physical affection, I’m very touchy with my friends and I crave deep connection and familiarity. Those are things I had with my family but will not have here for some time, either due to the culture or just the people. It’s hard to not be able to take a weekend and go home for a visit like most students, but that’s why it’s so important to know that we are not alone. Stay strong! Sending my love ❤

I've just graduated from Falmouth University (Cornwall), I've lived just outside of London my whole life. Plymouth is a beautiful place, I loved taking pictures next to the iconic lighthouse, you've made the right decision. It won't always be easy, you will get homesick but you will gain so much in the long run. I wish you the best of luck with making new experiences and your art!

Plymouth was like the "main city" in the English learning book I had in seventh grade (German school) so there´s a large group of German students that have oddly specific knowledge about Plymouth

We're rooting for you! Self-directed art education is so challenging because, at the same time you're forming and expressing concepts, you're also learning to craft at a high level of skill. We think, since you had a little sticker shock over pre-stretched canvas and intend to work large, it might be time to start stretching and priming your own custom canvases- you'll be able to create proportions and surfaces that are tailored to your processes, and it will be more economical if you make multiples at once. As an added bonus, you won't go airborne carrying folded fabric and stretcher bars!

I'm not as far from my family as some of you but my first year was probably the worst. I'm now on my 2nd and I finally have ppl I can call friends and im emotionally and physically more happy. Yes everyone says it but it's tru. It gets better, if you truly want it to. The last part really struck me because sometimes I'm wondering what I'm doing with my art. I can't do beautifull ppl. I can't draw straight lines. But I know I can do something with the colors I choose and the way I want something to be. I'm definitely not the best artist out there but I'm the one artist like myself, and that's what's important. What you said about growing really hit it for me. So thank you.

I'm from new york (nice to hear you went to sva!) and am currently living/working/studying in croatia for the next three months. my family is from here and while it's relatively familiar to me, this is the first time I'm truly living alone and so far from home. Im actually planning to go to AUP in September if everything goes well with the results and stuff , and finding your channel is the first real insight into uni life ive really seen. You are smart so you already know this but if you are comfortable using English brands of supplies, Derwent, Daler Rowney, and Winsor and Newton their supplies maybe cheaper in Plymouth than the brands you used in New York. I can exactly feel what you're experiencing right now, honney😔 When I entered univercity I thoght it's gonna be so romantic and I'll meet so many interesting ppl, find my love but it actually seems so lonely to move from your relatives and hometown to absolutely different place. Hi Sunny, really great video and it’s a pleasure to discover you here. I know Plymouth well as was born and raised in city Exeter just a short distance up the coast from you. You should visit Exeter, yes it’s even smaller than Plymouth but has quite a lot of history. Hope you are settling in to both life in Plymouth and your course there. You will definitely enjoy the slower pace there during your time living there whilst studying. I live and work in London and really appreciate and enjoy when escaping to the more quiet serene parts down there, it allows you to think, to enjoy, have peace and tranquillity. 18:17 many soft drinks sold here are sugar free. Although they’re not advertised as that. They usually write “no sugar added” and by that we can assume the sweetness either comes from the fruit juice itself, or if artificial sweeteners are added. There’s a stupid sugar tax aswell so it’s usually cheaper to get sugar free

uk art student here!! some good websites to buy quality cheap art supplies in england are jackson's art (25% discount with a student acc!) and cassart (match their prices plus 10% discount) though not sure if they have a physical store in plymouth? also for canvases it's way cheaper to stretch your own, you can make them to your own specifications and won't go broke from buying TvT best of luck on your degree and thanks for sharing your experience! 💚

I personally highly recommend Jackson's Art Supplies! Love that shop, they have an enormous catalogue of products for all levels and all budgets, including products you can hardly find elsewhere! (lots of imports from Japan, Australia, US, Europe, etc.)... and they also have their own brand of products.

I used to lecture at universities in Melbourne Australia and we had a lot of international students and it was very hard on them. Many were very young and had never lived away from home before. Suddenly they were 1000s of kilometres from anyone they knew. It was hard on them.

Also, the tesco water, it doesn't have sugar added but it has artificial sweeteners which is not the same thing, so they are right, it has no sugar but it's sweet because of the sweeteners which are just chemicals but I'll take it over actual sugar any time of the day :). The apple & elderflower is my favorite with the grape one being second :)

Welcome to Plymouth, there's plenty to love :) Whilst you're here you should check out Dartmoor, Tavistock, Totnes, Mount Edgecombe, Saltram house, Royal William Yard, and Cornwall! The cultural sector is thriving, galleries like KARST, Grow, Leadworks, Talkshop, and the box are all worth visiting :)

I moved to Cornwall to study Textiles at Falmouth, (20 years ago) looking back it was a good move. Its nice to live in a smaller place with a slower pace of life. I am sure you will meet some lovely people. I moved with my Daughter, just the two of us. We both fit right in. We're both still in contact with the friends that we met there. Wish I had made time to visit Plymouth. Recommend, a visit to the area of Dartmoor near Bovey Tracey, its a magical area with moss and lichen hanging from the trees. So green and pretty, close to a village named Lustleigh. The beaches of North Devon are breath taking too 😉
