I’m a teacher as well and I’ve been having anxiety and dread about going back, but watching this video got me excited again! Thank you! The dread was all built up in my head. You reminded me of the friendships with coworkers and the bond with the kids!

Thank you!! I know last year during the first week i was questioning my career choice and having breakdowns in my classroom and now i feel like myself again and that a dark cloud has lifted, moving schools truly was one of the best decisions and I’m so glad i took the risk!!

hi! I'm a 5th-grade teacher too! Besides having your expectations laid out clearly... don't be afraid to show them the real you. like ... share with them what you like. For example, I like Pokemon so I do a Pokemon of the day and they start getting excited to know even those that don't like pokemon. They'll sometimes seem like they are older than 10 sometimes but then you see them playing and laughing seeing that they are still babies. 😊 I'm coming off a tough year but I genuinely don't recall all the bad and remember the times we laughed and played games together just having fun

Fifth grade is a year in which students take all of their skills from their other grades and apply them when it comes to math. Find ways to support their multiplication and division skills because you will be covering volume and decimals. Find strength in what goes well for you each day, and try not to be so hard on yourself when things do not go well. Remember that it takes three years to get used to the teaching profession, so please give yourself grace and feel free to ask other colleagues for support. Take care.

As a former 5th grade (now 4th) teacher, I would say to start the year with some very tight behavior management. Be strict! You can always loosen up as you get to know the kids and learn more about how they manage themselves. It is waaaay harder if you start loose and then find that you have to toughen up your management later. Also, it is almost always the down-time (transitions, end-of-day, etc.) where problems can begin, so be vigilant. Best of luck!
