➡️ I'm a low income native NYer. With minimal research you can pinpoint dozens of food pantries and places that serve hot meals. The city even has a map online showing where they all are. I know bc I utilize them. There's really no reason to go hungry in NYC. Especially if you have a vehicle to store food in. A tip: go to any bakery at the end of the day. They dump all kinds of fresh baked goods in bags on the street. I used to work at one and would bring bags of food to the homeless. Most small food stores and some cafes leave bags of food every night too. Wrapped sandwiches etc. If you're low-key and respectful the workers won't mind. The freegans gather food from these bags all the time. Not sayin it's easy to be homeless, but there are resources. Best of luck to you.
i found place where i can eat for free everyday rest of my life, but i need to offer 8-4 hours of work everyday or every 2 day (if i skip 1 day) but then i cant work to pay rent. so i etiher eat for free homeless, or work and unable to pay food and rent funny.. im lucky tho in 10 day homeless my advantage is it wont be extrem winter.. but in 6 month i i havnt got my shit back togheter. outch
Here I was feeling sorry for myself for frozen pipes in my home. I should be ashamed, I have a roof over my head and food to eat. We have so many empty buildings and waste so much food.
It's a big thing to have no water when you're used to it. When you can't flush your toilet it's a problem. Homeless or vanlifers have a hard time finding restrooms too. It takes a while to learn places or businesses where they can go.
Don't be ashamed it's very expensive to have a plumber fix broken pipes and if you're a senior collecting Social Security as your only income I can understand why you would feel sorry for yourself
Hey Joey-- i sold my art on the streets of NYC for 23 years full time so i relate to that part of your story---but i was never homeless---i enjoy listening to you and understand you. I did it from 1987 thru 2010----i was a founding member of A.R.T.I.S.T. --WE WON THE RIGHTS TO SELL ART without a permit.
Right before covid hit I was planning on selling prints along with my portraits which would have had me off the street permanently. But covid hit and it changed everything and made me want to leave nyc. I don't regret it. Just wasn't meant to be that way. Since then I've lost all my drawings otherwise I'd be making a killing on merch right now.
Joey nice hearing from you and helping us become aware of the stuff you are experiencing. You are a very smart dude. I hope you MAKE SURE YOU VOTE IN NOVEMBER. Your opinions matter ! Look forward to watching your videos.
Hell yeah, I’ve got five years myself and I remember how scared/excited I was at one week. (Not speaking for you of course) The elevated levels of cognition on the other side of it all cannot be overstated. Keep at it bro…shit’s gonna become really clear for you very soon if it isn’t already.
I’ve been dumpster diving since pandemic. But i live in country home. I have to drive to city to dive. Been snowed in recently. But i got food stored up. I can’t believe the kind of food they threw away in the grocery store dumpster. There’s plenty of food in this country but they throw a lot of it away just because people can’t buy it. Great 👍🏽 video
I'm glad to say that I beat the odds and survived my turbulent childhood years. Although hunger and homeless took it's toll on me, it was the beatings and the lack of love that left the deepest scars.
I was homeless for a long time, i would go to the back of restaurants and ask for food, cant remember ever being turned down, especially Chinese restaurants..
It’s been in the negative teens for the past several days in Denver, survival was about having a plan! Multiple heating systems, all with my pup in our old van. The shelters are nightmare-inducing. Just have to keep going! 😊
I'm in Denver too... Man is this below zero horrible! I'm thankful for shelter. My heater in our apartment went out but we had a couple of space heaters that saved our butts this weekend. I can't imagine how cold it is being in a tent, a car, or worse out doors. Stay warm... 😢
They make these 12 volt electric blankets that are super efficient. I bought one for when I'm living in a vehicle again and it works great and doesn't pull much power out of my generator. All night takes maybe ten percent.
Dude go work for a window cleaning company for 6 months. Then once you get comfortable washing windows you do it for yourself doing homes and townhouses in the suburbs. You can make over $100 an hour and tips as well. I usually work 25 to 30 hrs a week in summer and my take home is around $2500 a week and winters off. If you need more info hmu
Nice my friend did that starting when he was like 23, 24, he did tell me work gets slow in the winter, but damn make your own hours, and I don't think it's going to make you flat out wealthy, and buy a home, but maybe it would.
You don't have to be hungry in nyc. There are food pantries all over. Not sure if you need to register. Use to volunteer in queens but moved in 2021. One pantry is called in God's love or something like that. You can also collect cans and bottles for 5 cents bottle deposit. It adds up. Then you can buy something to eat. Good luck. Left ny. Glad I did. No more winters. In the sunshine state. 😊
I know exactly what you mean by reaching a point where death would be a release. But I won't give up yet! Your channel is kind of my favorite way to unwind when I'm alone and have nothing else to do. Someone that gets it.
Im sober for 3 years and i have been homeless and lived in a car but theres no way i could do homeless sober i would have to be on drugs or i would be miserable! I have thought about buying a nice conversion van to travel or incase i need it in the future if things went south. but things are good now i have a home and good job. I know exactly how you feel i been there so many times.
Even though I am not homeless, I live in the north near Montreal, Canada, where it is extremely cold and unpleasant. With our winters, I can't imagine being homeless.
@JoeytheGypsy I found your channel last night. I know my type of people when I meet them ( or hear them chat on RU-vid 😂💙) I sent ya a FB friend request. I live in a house in Virginia and have been vacationing in the Largo/Clearwater Beach area pretty much my whole life ( besides Sanibel Island as a kid & teen) ! 🤣🤣🤣 Stay blessed and free! 🌹🙏✝️
I lived through a half year of being a vehicle dweller in NYC. Worst part was lack of safety; women have to be “on” at all times to avoid being raped, assaulted, murdered. Trust no one, never let down your guard. The police assume you’re an addict or alcoholic, and that you are promiscuous. They also don’t let you sleep. It’s too dangerous to sleep at night. The cops chase you away after 15-20 minutes. I learned to stay up all night and catch cat naps in the car by day.
Lol I just don't get it, you guys must like NYC a lot, to have to do that. Plenty of people living in vehicles in peace out in Utah and Nevada deserts.
I've stayed in my hidden mobile tiny home with no heat with water inside frozen. I didnt run the heat because I wanted to see if all the gear I had would be warm. On the coldest day I tried this. It was 2 sleeping bags, 7 layer hat, gloves, 9 blankets on top. That's not all my gear. After about 30 - 40 minutes I was so warm I had to start removing lawyers of blankets and hats.. With most vehicles you can pull and build a Harbor Freight 4'x8' enclosed trailer. Its a flat open trailer but you enclose it pretty easy to do with 4 stake pockets in the corners. The smaller the space the easier to heat and cool. Everyone needs a backup home in case of a emergency or they have to leave. With all these emergencies, fires, floods, huricanes, train derailments and more. We all better be prepped and prepared.
Yep it's why I keep my minivan around just in case. I've stayed in it many times in the cold. One thing no one ever mentions is ski masks. I used to wear a ski mask to keep my face warm, wasn't too bad but didn't do it for long lol.
I'm not homeless but each month I struggle to pay rent. And food too. Cannot really do much after the stroke.. I subscribed and liked your video. Stay strong
There is hope. Am glad you have access to a car and to the soup kitchens as their generous meals help fill you up which keep that blood circulating. Keep the faith!
I met people like you no matter what things always worked out for them anyway. It's amazing to watch and see because you think all else fail for that person, but something happens and they get a leg up I don't know where. I left that City a long time ago, too much bad memories had to try to make some good ones somewhere else.
I'm Homeless in Alaska. Never been cold all winter. Its just the poverty and the running around to stay on top of shit. Plus the people who HAVE shit tryen find my spot to destroy it. That reallly drives me crazy. I spend ten minutes every morning covering the tracks to my snow cave and people still up there looken round.
What kind of skills besides drawing do you have? Are you good at fixing old houses like plumbing and cement work and drywall and / or cleaning? What was the role of your job without giving the name of the company
I'm good at anything with hands but I'm best at sculpting and carving things out of wood. But I wanted to make a living off the jokes I write or drawing. I worked for Belmont. The horse track on Long Island where they do the Belmont stakes.
@@joeythegypsy Does your carving translate well to Etsy? Wooden gnome or woodland characters sell fairly well if you can create the little characters quickly.
(1) The primary cause of homeless is greed (2) Rich people are greedy (3) Middle class are greedy (4) Even poor people are greedy in a stupid way. (5) The primary way is they want too many material possessions (6) We are addicted to buying stuff. (7) We had 4 billion people 40 years ago (8) Now we have 8 billion (9) What did people expect? (10) Still there is enough to go around (11) People do not want to give up their lounges (12) People do not want to give up their full size kitchens (13) They get trapped into paying a mortgage (14) If houses were half the size...or quarter the size. (15) Whats the tiny house situation where you live (16) Guessing your government has made is non viable? (17) Living out of a car is effectively half a single room max. (18) I in a boarding house single room at 44 (19) Have done for the last 22 years (20) We really don't need much...
Just because youre okay with living in a room, for over twenty years, doesn't mean the solution to the housing crisis is downsizing existing structures. Youre nuts
There are many people who live in their cars who work, and have a gym membership to shower and here in Missouri they cost ten dollars a month. This is truly sad for many people. They buy mimi vans and live in them. Most will break down in time. This is here in the real world, and the government will never step in.May our lord jesus help all people who are homeless. This can happen to anybody in these times. Now we let all these people into the USA who will never be out of benefits of state or government.
I recently discovered that Little Caesar's pizza supposedly gives away free leftover pizzas when they're about to close. They'd prefer not to throw any in the trash.
New Yorks coldest recorded temp was negative 52 degrees below zero , I live in Iowa , are coldest recorded temp was negative 47 degrees below zero. You got us beat
I found it much smarter to hop the LIRR to the suburbs for free and camp well in the woods. My biggest struggle? Cops took my gear twice on the coldest days and I almost died of exposure twice. No idea how i made it to stores to warm up to this day.
I EXPERIENCED ALL OF THIS DISCRIBED, BEING 5 YEARS OLD IN THE INDIAN RESAVATION,. KNOW WHAT STARVING IS LIKE , EVEN NOT HAVING WATER TO DRINK😮...MY DAD WAS A DRUNK ,USED TO LEAVE ME AT THE SHACK DAYS AT ATIME , BEFORE WELFARE PRETEND TO CARE ABOUT KIDS..LOST MY OLDER BROTHER TO SICKNESS & STARVATION...THANK GOD I SURVIVED....THANK YOU CREATOR....LT CMDR GATES RET 21 MORSOC FORCES SPECIAL OPERATIONS COMMAND 🇺🇸🇺🇸
I feel bad not being grateful to hear you be hungry my heart for you I am home less in my suv and I be going through it because I am anemic in the winter your story was so deep going through my hard days this make me want to keep going
There's a light there at times it's hard to see but it's there good people everywhere you just need to keep going I was homeless over a year found out more about the human race than I ever knew keep going you never know what is going to happen
vacationing at the NY shelter with liquor in a to go cup lmao 😂 you got some funny crazy azz stories....If sh*t really hits the fan you'll be like a General out there, a lot of people don't know how to survive in even the slightest uncomfortable circumstances.
Hey Joey, long time fan! You think it would be possible to show us your set up one day? Like a video showing what kind of van you got and the things inside/how you organize them, etc. I've always been curious bc this is the only view we've ever seen (with all the tape hanging on the rope in the back. Like what do you use those for?). Just think it would make an interesting video and maybe give other people who might be inside the same situation more ideas on how to get by.
Why not get a cdl you have a license....and get a job with waste management and you won't be poor and hungry.get a regular job..I know what it's like to be poor and hungry I lived down there in Florida in clearwater...being a drinker and a pot smoker...don't you get tired of being homeless and no money
I'm from Minnesota and I see the same Pan handler on the corner of 494/ Penn every year from April until October. One year I was on I-4 near Orlando in Japan...and there was the Minnesota panhandler!! He waved in recognition... Back in Minneapolis in April..WHY DONT YOU DRIVE TO FLORIDA?
Find a food bank if you have a car, there is no excuse....I have empathy for you, but there are free food banks everywhere! You have a place to store it especially in the winter!
It blows my mind why anyone would want to be homeless in the city. Go to the country peace and quiet. animals everywhere . you can feed yourself off the land it’s easy. Worst case scenario is you would have to finance a half a acre or an acre of land out here in the middle of nowhere and even that super cheap and most of the owners will finance it to you with a couple hundred dollars down.
Yep pretty much. Check out cheap RV living on RU-vid that's what Bob is all about. Mostly leaning toward getting out of cities, and living a great life on many of the west coast states.
Joey didnt your parents ever let you go back to live with them or you didnt want to burden them? Usually people who go homeless have no family you had both your parents...
My parents died when I was like 20. There's people I could have stayed with but I didn't want to. I'm very independent I don't like to feel I owe people.
@joeythegypsy ah shit man I'm sorry I didn't know that I just remeber one of your vedios you talked about them and it made me wonder. Must of made NYC a even colder place for you but you fought through and hung in there your a tough man Joey.
Every homeless person has a phone - what is surprising about this? In today's world, it's hard to avoid having one. About the jacket: in wealthy cities for example, homeless wear lot of brands like this, just because a lot of this stuff is/was donated.
I came to the conclusion that it's not their fault. Like I had no right to hurt people who never did anything to me. My anger should not be directed at them.
Working at amazon got me out of my homeless stint, I work 60 hours a week and can afford an apartment. I will be going down to 50 hours once my husband gets a job.
a super overpowered strat for getting free food, easily, just go to areas where not too many homeless people go, suburbs are best or just outside dense metro areas, but not extremely rich area, just in the middle. walk down the busy streets with all the restaurants. simply be honest, humble, actually be hungry, and ask for a manager. say hi, can you help me? i'm hungry and have run out of money. do you have anything extra or anything you can help me with to eat? just say that and only that every time the same. i promise you, it's impossible to go to a few 4 or 5 places and not get fed a bunch of fast food. someone will hook you up almost guaranteed. even if u have to try 15 places, i promise you, that 16th place is giving you a pizza, drinks, breadsticks, etc. or sometimes it's a few small scores in a row. you will eat a lot all day. it happens every time just don't give up. it's like magic, there are good people out there. just don't be a dick.
As a man who lived homeless for 10 plus years , I found making money in the cold weather is better then in the heat .. I held signs off the highways and such. If you haven’t tried this you should . Of course when I was out there doing it there wasn’t a million other people doing it, it was just a few and then everyone started doing it everywhere .. But best of luck , it’s def not easy in the cold .
Yo, just found your channel. Love your style. Of the few videos I seen, I saw you referencing some great authors like Richard Bach, Sun Tzu... Any other great book recommendations from your perspective? Thanks. Peace.
