First Woodturning Project: File Handles

Bill unveils the newest addition to the Tiny Little Workshop, a janky old lathe that occasionally throws things at high velocity! Follow along as he tackles one of the simplest woodturning projects around and winds up with some upcycled pallet wood handles to fit his assortment of files. Gaze in awe how he persists, despite having absolutely none of the right tools for the job. Look closely for where his improper methodology overheats tools and makes billowy clouds of smoke. Be amazed at how hours are spent to produce a product that costs about $2 each at the big box store. At least he was having fun I guess.

This is literally the only video I can find with a Craftsman/AMT 273 lathe being used. I am setting up my grandfather's and it's neat to see it running.

I have the same lathe, I got it for free. I like it. I need turning tools also. Good job on your first turning.

You were using the wood chisel upside down. Pennstate ind.com for some reasonably priced lathe tools. Also you want your rest as close as possible without the piec hitting it. Amazed the chisel didn't break on you. But hey we all gotta start somewhere. Mike Peace and Eddie Castelin for some quality teaching videos. That is where I started! And you can make your own carbide tools. Good Luck with turning!

Oooh, fun, a new technique to try. Definitely going to be plenty of research on angles, distances, and tool shapes in the future. One of the next videos will likely show the making of a DIY roughing gouge because Bill is way too cheap to buy nearly anything brand new.

Then you definitely want to look into the carbide tools as these are very forgiving and if made yourself cheap! Eddie Castelin for the Carbide bits. Get the square one first or go with one of his specials. They are still way cheaper than Rockler or any of the other commercial stores. Regards, and looking forward to see what you come up with.

i know this was years ago but there’s a better way to fit handles. you drill a hole about the size of the tang and then you heat the tang red hot. you push the handle on and any excess material will be burned away leaving a tight fit.
