I am on my third work away. 2 were Japan now Greece. Yes you do work. The upside is the non tourist life. I chose small villages which are not even on lonely planet. Very good way to travel longer with purpose. Best thing i did in life and im not young, they are very accepting types of intelligent young people.

I'm glad to hear you've had such great experiences. I'd like to try doing it in a small village somewhere

I've host internationals here in the USA. So far I've taken them camping, hiking, surfing and they get to stay st my house for free for 1 week.

when you get there, do they make you work the next day? do you have time to recover or no? Have you seen any workaways that offer stipends? it seems all only offer room and maybe food.
@GabrielaMelgar415

Hey Liz, I had to work the next day, but maybe this is something that can be worked out with your host. I haven't seen workaways that offer stipends, but there may be some out there?

Hi Gabriela I've got a question about visas. did u need a working holiday visa to volunteer? I really want to workaway in japan but I'm 35 so too old for a working holiday visa
@GabrielaMelgar415
@GabrielaMelgar415 7 лет назад
Hello! I didn't need a visa because I was only in Japan for a month. As an American I only needed a visa if I were staying over 90 days. I suggest looking into the regulations for your country. I hope you get to go! Also- workaway is a volunteer program that doesn't pay, which is another reason you shouldn't need a working visa.

Gabriela Melgar thanks Gabriela, it's the same for the UK but alot of the workaways state I need a visa. I've emailed a few to see what they say. Thanks for sharing your experience by the way!

That's interesting..I didn't come across that. I'm sure you'll find some that don't though. Good idea emailing them. Best of luck!

A little late for this video but I'm thinking of trying Workaway to go to Japan. My question is.. How did you do it with the money? If your host doesn't pay you, how would you get around the city buying stuff? or you just save up like $1000 for two weeks? thank you

I really wanna do some workaway, i'm planning to do in the next year, or in the year after that. But I gotta save some money to buy the tickets.

very useful information! did you have the chance to travel to other cities while you were doing the workaway? I was wondering if with just one day off per week you can manage to take a return train ticket to spend the day somewhere else? thanks

Hello! I am very interested in workaway as well but I'm confused about the visa. I can't get holiday working visa since I'm American but I also don't want to get a working visa for 1 month of work! Since I'm American I don't need a visa for a visit less than 90 days, will this be enough to work in japan ? (Since I'm not actually getting money) Thanks!
@GabrielaMelgar415
@GabrielaMelgar415 7 лет назад
Hey, I didn't need to get a work visa since I was only in Japan for a month, and you don't need a work visa to do workaway. I only worked at my workaway for 2 weeks; that's usually the minimum you can do. Best of luck!

before you arrived at your work away, how did you communicate with your work away host? did you discuss the actual work arrangements, food, and sleeping arrangements? sounds like a good overall experience. i am looking to do the same in south america over a longer period of time.
@GabrielaMelgar415

Hey Gaby I was wondering what is the other program you suggested at the end besides "workaway"? It was kinda of hard to hear. The one about knowing your career and what not.
@GabrielaMelgar415
@GabrielaMelgar415 8 лет назад
I also suggested couchsurfing. I was saying that I like workaway because Idk what I want to do career-wise and I get to dip my toes in different fields w/ workaway. Hope that was helpful

Gabriella, I have a completed profile with interesting photos of what I do, but have no responses from anyone yet after one week. What else can I do? About how many days did it take for this Japanese host to contact you back? Did most of the people you applied to reply to your inquiries? How far ahead did you make plans with your host family?
@GabrielaMelgar415
@GabrielaMelgar415 6 лет назад
I would continue to reach out to as many hosts as possible since it can be competitive- specially in popular destinations. Most of the people didn't respond to me. I think it took my host about a week to get back to me? I can't exactly remember. Best of luck, Eva!

hey, I'm also thinking about doing workaway and I wanted to ask a. how much did you spend? b. did you make some friends? like did you go sightseeing alone all the time or did you go with someone else? c. did you make any trips to other parts of japan? d. about the visa: how did you apply for it? (i'm from germany)

Mary Soph can you answering to his question plz i think to doing workaway too
@GabrielaMelgar415
@GabrielaMelgar415 7 лет назад
Sorry for the late response. I spent around 2k for my month in Japan, though I think I could've spent less. During the workaway I spent less because I shared meals with other volunteers. I made some friends doing workaway, which was the most enjoyable aspect of it all. Got to hang with them and go sight seeing with cool people. I traveled to Tokyo, Naoshima and Hiroshima too. As an American I didn't need a visa to enter Japan

Hi Ran, I don't think workaway hosts typically assist with visas. You might want to look into this on the site: workaway.info

Muchas gracias!
@GabrielaMelgar415
@GabrielaMelgar415 8 лет назад

Well, it's more challenging but it also gives the students a full immersion experience. It can be awkward and you need patience with beginner students, but somehow it worked out

+Gabriela Melgar I hear EU saves tefl for EU citizens. only some jobs in Spain and Czech Rep. I dont know for sure, just what I have heard. CIEE has Spain jobs, but they want you to pay them for job placement. For both paid and volunteer jobs.
@GabrielaMelgar415
@GabrielaMelgar415 8 лет назад
Yea, it seems harder for non EU citizens to get teaching jobs because of the visa and stuff. I know Spain has a government program that takes American teachers
