[Please skip ahead to the video at 01:54 if you wish!)
This is the first video in a series of videos highlighting some of the main renovations to my Kominka over the past year and a bit, since work began in earnest in February 2023.
Rather than narrating these videos though, in my not so eloquent or clear voice and speech, I have decided to keep with text subtitles, accompanied by background music.
The music, however, is nothing standard - it’s gramophone music!
I have several old gramophones, and hundreds of old records - some shellac and some vinyl - discovered in the Kura storehouses at my Kominka, and in others, and I love the atmosphere that the music from these wonderful machines creates.
The songs and music are digitised versions of some of what I have, music that was popular during the 1920s and 30s, so starting some twelve years or so after my house was built.
They are in the ‘ryūkōka’ style that incorporated elements of western classical, blues, and jazz into traditional Japanese music.
Anyway, this first video shows some of the renovations done to one of the Washitsu (Japanese style rooms) that will probably become a bedroom, and is, in fact, where I sleep now.
Please enjoy watching this and listening to the music! And don’t forget to let me know what you think in the comments - cheers!
