It looks really good. I live north of you in Canada and I cut my lavender back each year to 3-4 " high. Never gets woody that way always new growth. I cover mine with dried leaves and it has survived for 4 winters. Lavender likes to be on the dry side

If you have never been to the lavender farms on Maui- you must! I buy my mosquito lotion there every year! It is one of my favorite places, rows and rows of lavender... magical. Their lavender mosquito lotion is amazing and works 100%, if you have ever spent time in the high country jungle you know the mosquitoes are huge and extremely persistent and it's the only thing that works!

Wowser, most definitely agree with you about the size they have grown. I'd chalk it up to 3 things, 1... Soil they love. 2....no competition and 3... That black landscape fabric has reflected the warmth back into the soil and lavender loves that! Something I don't agree on... Do not cut it back. Take all the flowers off now. Do not cover till really cold hut you can get yr hoops ready b4 ground freezes. The reason not 2 cut it back is all that new growth will help 2 protect the crown and roots. The time 2 trim it back is in the late spring when you start 2 c new growth. Next yr it will bloom earlier. Those flowers u c now are because of all that goodness of growth and the late warm weather. Lavender can send out some second flush of flowers but skimpy. I've grown over a hundred lavender plants in yrs. Have 5 shades of purple, white and pink. My fav light pink one is called Jean Davis. A great Canadian supplier fairly close 2 you in Ontario is Richters Herbs. Anyway... I notice u just snapped off some Dandelions... If u don't get that whole long tap root it will grow back and be even bigger in its root system next year! 😁 Wish I had a huge field like yrs 2 grow in rows as such. Are u going 2 sell lavender in bunches. What one of our local lavender business farm does is let people cut their own. They demonstrate how 2 cut and then give them a little wooden mini like ruler that has 2 diff size if holes for one 2 put their stems in so they know how much.

Love your lavender field! I'm growing Grosso for the oil and Imperial Gem for the dried buds! I'm in 8b, and we normally get tons of Oregon rain, so I had to plant mind on sandy loam burms. Gardening and farming is definitely a lot of research and experimentation.

Great update! 8b here with crappy soil and constant drought (at 4,000 ft in San Diego County, CA). Tested a Vera, Munstead, and Spike. Munstead died. Then grew from seed and planted 100' rows of 66 Spike and 33 Vera. Rabbits aren't supposed to like it...but they wiped out all of the Vera, and severely chomped the Spike before I could get them protected! A year later the Spike rebounded. I am about to refill the Vera row with something. You may have motivated me towards Hidcote! 👍

I would doubt that cold would kill lavender on its own! At least Munstead and Hidcote are very tough plants.Poor drainage is the big problem and in winter moisture hangs around much longer. I don’t know the other type you are growing but if it is classified as a French lavender it may be “softer “. Good luck. It will be beautiful!👍

The reason one trims it back is to get a nice new flush closer 2 the ground. Also it doesn't get so woody. I do let a few of mine get woody but just for a certain look. One doesn't have 2 cut them back when they are small like hers now, just a trimming on the top third in the spring!

Why would you cut back the lavender plants before placing the frost cloth over them? ? Would be better to create a " tent" using the foliage to support the cloth and creating a warmer air space IMHO. Cut back in spring at the end of the heavy frosts that could damage the lavender.
