“I Guns’n’Roses, i Rolling Stones?”
“Naturalmente!”
“Sì, però, “Selling England By The Pound”….quello era un vero capolavoro!”
Ah, i Genesis!
At The Royal Albert Hall”

Antonio ~ l;m a progger though, and through. This is one of thee best of the best! up there with Yes ''Awaken''. l cant say l get ''visuals'' in the conventional sense with Firth of Fifth but during Steve's solo, comes an unexplainable kind of mood, and a beautiful longing for...something. l cant quite touch it, but l know its there. Maybe the bliss of Heaven.

DAL LONTANO 1973 SEGUO I GENESIS. LI ADORO. UN MIO CARO AMICO DICEVA CHE LA LORO MUSICA NON STANCA MAI. AVEVA RAGIONE. IO RITENGO SIA INIMITABILE. INEGUAGLIABILE. MIO PADRE OTTANTENNE LI AMAVA. I MIEI FIGLI IN AUTO MI DICEVANO DI ASCOLTARE I GENESIS. SONO MOLTO SINCERO, PIANGO, AVEVO 15 ANNI. ORA A 61 CERCO DI EVITARE DI ASCOLTARLI, SOLO PER IL FATTO CHE MI RICORDANO GLI AMICI, MIO PADRE SCOMPARSI TROPPO PRESTO. SPERO DI INCONTRARLI TUTTI E INSIEME ASCOLTARE QUESTA MERAVIGLIOSA MUSICA. @davidbrugman I don't know if you remember this or not, but at a time when ELP temporarily split up, and John left Asia, Greg Lake filled in for John on a live show from Japan. At least I think it was Japan. A friend got me tickets to see the live broadcast via satellite from a radio station promo/contest. If you're from L.A. I think it was KMET that promoted it. And the story was Greg had a very short time to learn the songs-like a month or so. But he did it and was awesome. I think this was 78 or 79. It was a good show. Greg did well.

The most stunningly beautiful Prog Rock Guitar solo you’ll ever hear. No need to shred like a chainsaw.....how can you truly FEEL a thousand notes a minute anyway? Never mind the quantity, just savour the quality. Tone so smooth and pure......like Golden Syrup in warm milk. This was my introduction to Progressive Rock after hearing a preview of Seconds Out on BBC’s Friday Rock Show. I bought the album and used to lie in my room in the dark listening to Firth of Fifth with my parents downstairs totally convinced I was doing my Maths Homework! I saw Steve play it at a low key show in my local venue back in 2014. I was literally at his feet and now I know how it must’ve felt to hold the ladder for Michelangelo!

The great thing about watching masterful musicians is how effortless they make it look. They actually have fun and are not worried because this is second nature to them. Genesis music took you to other places much like reading a novel allowing your mind to imagine!

I think it's a "you don't know what you have til you lose it"-kind of thing. I wasn't alive during the hey-day of Genesis, but was born mid 80's, but I've experienced this phenomenon a couple of times in other areas; one was 90's era PC gaming, an era of tremendous inventiveness, extreme progress in performance and capability and the ability for small, creative teams to create world-class titles without hundred million dollar budgets and 14 layers of beaurocracy to implement their ideas; another was the aureal A3D positional sound, this was so obviously the future that I thought nothing of it, it was just progress and everyone will have this and even better in 5 years; now it's 20 years later I still have to maintain a windows 98 PC because there is no 3D audio anywhere close to as good. By the time I was old enough to appreciate music, there was no music to appreciate in the mainstream. Games sometimes had bloody good music (especially on the C64); movies too sometimes had good music; but music intended just for music's sake on MTV and radio was something I just didn't understand or appreciate; it was bland, repetive, seemingly designed to be grating and annoying. Late 90's we went from 56k to fibre-to-house-broadband; this is what allowed me to discover that music was at a time in the distant past very good. It then allowed me to discover that a lot of good music was still being made.

@@soylentgreenb your pseudo alone reveals us that you crave old school stuff. I'm amazed to learn that someone 10 years younger then me could apreciate old school Genesis. While I was reading you I was thinking that the first versions or examples of pretty much everything are often the best. Talking about contemporary music, if you found something that realy grabs you in the guts lately let me know about it. These days I listen to a lot of; ''Krhuanbin'' ,''Thivery corporation'' and if you realy like progressif music ''Porcupine tree'' and Steven Wilson's recent albums ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-5UVIpBVVQFk.html And I still listen to good old oldies from the good old days :-))

I saw Steve and his band perform this at Sheffield last year. Selling England by the Pound and Spectral Mornings, it was utter bliss. This track was one of the standout moments, but in reality it was all fabulous. If you've wondered about going to see Steve, don't hesitate. The man and his band are consummate professionals added to which they still dig what they're doing and it shows.

Going to see him this month. Last time had to be around 1980 in a small venue in nyc. He wasn’t playing any genesis then. I caught both the drummers sticks he tossed out. This is the closest experience to classic genesis we will ever have. Mad respect for Steve as one of the great golden age prog guitarists.
