The Firth Tower was built in 1882 by Josiah Clifton Firth to provide a lookout over the country side. It was also used as the estate office and sleeping quarters for single men. The tower stands on rising ground commanding an extensive view of the surrounding country.
The Firth Tower Historical Reserve is administered by the Matamata-Piako District Council and museum exhibits and displays are the work of the Matamata Historical Society. (Museum Web site)
Just a few minutes from Matamata the museum provided a beautifully curated look into the farming history of the area as well as exquisitely furnished interiors of a number of historic building that have been moved on site.

Thanks Bruce , I’m sure I could cook up a good roast in that coal range. Back in the 1970’s one of my flatmates mums was still using one and her roasts were legendary 😀. I think really the only thing missing is a fridge, I’m not sure when they became common. My dad said in the 1920’s they had an Icebox with someone delivering a big block of ice each week !

Watching the school bags and desks at the whole school reminds me of my school days, like hundred years ago 😅😅😅😅

Hi Kylie, yes I liked the school bags , pretty sure there was a good collection at the Matakohe Kauri museum as well . I had one just like those when I went to school in Christchurch, of course I have no idea what happened to it but it would be so trendy to have it now, they were so well made of real leather .

Hi Chris - I really enjoyed seeing the gardens and interiors of the house and buildings! Charming! It seems people in New Zealand really appreciate and value the local history! The displays look natural like the people still live and work there. Loved seeing all the tools and farm equipment- fun to have some photos on display too. Love seeing the old quilts and schoolroom. Beautiful photos and video! 🩷💕🌟🌟 Hope you have a great weekend -Jen 😄

Hi Jennifer , you are right everywhere you go we seem to have really good local museums run on the smell of an oily rag by volunteers , maybe it’s because we are such a young country there is still a good number of original artefacts in existence or are we are just a nation of collectors ? 😀. I certainly have Items made or owned by my grandparents . This is the second museum I’ve seen with a good collection of those old leather school bags, I wish I had kept mine but it was probably passed to my younger sister for her use !!

This is a wonderful exploration. I enjoyed seeing the variety of tools and equipment in the farming shed. The quaint and charming Methodist church at the end is a really nice touch. Enjoyed! ⛪💯💯📽

Oh wow!! What an amazing place! I love how they preserved all of the houses instead of tearing them down! I love to visit historic home like these! It’s like traveling back in time! The flowers on the exterior of the home were so beautiful! You footage and pictures are absolutely fantastic! Thank you so much for allowing me to visit with you Chris!

Thanks a lot Gracie, my apologies I thought I’d replied . There are a few of these kinds of museums around the country where old buildings get transported to a site usually a place with existing older buildings and thank goodness for that . In Auckland the best example would be the Howick Historic village (which I covered in Aug 2021) . I especially like the room recreations that accompany them as they sometime remind me of my grandmothers house and especially one of her sisters which I don’t think had been altered since Victorian times 😀.

Hey thanks a lot. I find the whole Waikato area very pretty especially spring and autumn although the monumental expansion of housing in Cambridge and Matamata not so much although having said that it mostly seems very high quality retirement oriented. If you had time you could easily spend a few of your precious days in the area. 😀
