RSO Berlin, Riccardo Chailly, Berlin 09.01.1989
In meinem Lieben, in meinem Lied!

Even with his best vocal years behind him, his voice was just an absolute marvel. A perfectly integrated voice. And nobody had better musicality

As a conductor in germany let me say with tears in my eye: He was -oh no, he is- an singing angel-he will never die, he only is right in what he is singing in this Mahler-Clip: "Ich bin der Welt abhanden gekommen..."

The fact that he was at the end of his career only makes the song more moving. If anyone lived alone in his song it was Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau.

Wunderbar! I love how he always keeps his diction absolutely pure, so you can understand each and every word. Unlike many singers of German songs, he made NO compromises at all: no warping of vowels and softening of sounds considered "harsh" to some ears, and NO retreat from being first and foremost a first-class story-teller through the medium of song. He was the very epitome of baritones... and will remain a Gold Standard forever.

I think the perfection comes from intellect, and thats how he conveys emotion. Its still clear I think his performance comes straight from the heart, he's not just a great technician.

I agree, but it also comes from being a native speaker of German and understanding this song from inside his native language having been educated in that language. Just recently, I listened again - after a few decades - to a recording of Kathleen Ferrier singing this song in 1952. She was not a native speaker of German and her singing education was in the Italian belcanto tradition. Consequently, although her voice quality was fantastic, and her diction exceptionally good for a non-native speaker, it is obvious that she had not fully understood the song.

Genau, gut gesagt. English translation of Peter Pan's comment: He's saying that this poem's message shouldn't be a cause for teary-eyed sadness. What the text actually implies is that when you look back on an accomplished life, you can be quiet and content. I totally agree with this interpretation.

In reply to srothbardt: During DFD's first year at the Berlin conservatorium - aged 18 - he was conscripted into a veterinary unit in the German army. and was sent to the Eastern Front to look after draught horses used to pull supply wagons. He was allowed to visit his mother in Berlin after their home was bombed and was fortunately then diverted to Italy. (If he'd been captured by the Russians it's probable he would not have been released till the mid-fifties.) He was captured by the Americans in Italy two days before the end of the war and was released two years later in 1947.

That's an artists song. Of course he is lost to the world because there are many people, but I'm not referring to you, who say that they don't want more morbid German music on RU-vid. This doesn't refer to you because you are smart and sensitive music lover. Your intelligent irony was well placed and you shouldn't be bothered with unintelligent and desperate comments aimed to undermine it. You are a nice and tender person. Usually fools post messages on RU-vid. You analyze music and words.
