Yes on second man drop off the Tail End Charlie is introduced at the start of the ride (pre ride briefing) and remains at the back. On the ride the marking rider either sets off again when TEC comes along and he/she either slows down and lets him go in front or overtakes and then lets him overtake just down the road. Viz vests are usually worn as a recognising feature but if everybody's wearing them it becomes a bit confusing :D
In IAM Northumbria we use permanent lead and tail with unusual colour hi viz, as the tail comes up behind the junction marker they move off. The rider behind the leader always marks, no need for counting. Works most of the time…
Another great vlog guys. It’s been a while since I visited Matlock bath but it’s great to see that bikers still make the pilgrimage even on a cold February day.
Hahahaha. Sorry. I thought I was commenting on Saddlebags’ video. Maybe I put your comment on his video. My brain is broken. I was changing guitar strings when watching today.
Hi the first man drop off system you would select a leader and a rail end Charlie , these never change , so when marking a junction you do not move until tail end Charlie arrives , usually in a distinctive colour and they would signal with their arm up that you are allowed to set off again , Matlock was there last week , nice for a ride out and lunch , hope you cleaned the bikes 😅
Thanks for the clarification on drop off. Shows how much group riding we do! Let's just say I cleaned both bikes after the Matlock run but I shouldn't complain as Carol was at work earning. All the roads in the area were filthy 😳
Hey guys great video! I enjoyed coming for the ride and the walk around Matlock Bath. That big Yamaha trike was based on a Yamaha Venture (maybe Royale) XVZ12 :)
I have I don't get the peas. Is there a rule that you have to park front first? We almost always park the rear in first so we can pull straight out. That is a busy place, I don't see that many motorcycles in six months. I'm glad a stayed up a bit longer..👍👍
Mushy peas, lovely 😃 no rules front or rear first, but if it's busy you just pull into a space and worry about getting out later. Sunday on a hot dry summer day that little Peak District town gets completely packed with motorbikes. Honestly we avoid the place when it's really busy.
RE. The Drop Off system, the others have it all wrong, what happens is, the 'lead rider' waves his arms frantically at the rider second in line to mark a junction, the poor guy has absolutely no idea what the 'tail gunner' looks like, so waits there for much longer than he needs to and eventually 'Drops off' the back of the group (as the name would suggest) Eventually, they all 'Drop Off' and you are left with just You and Carol in the group, which is how you intended it to be in the first place anyway.....🤣🤣🤣
Cumbria is lovely and honestly Matlock Bath is a little Blackpool like but still a great meeting place for bikers. Fuel consumption on the MT10. I've never got it past 39 mpg! Even following Carol. Her Street Triple goes a third further on the same fuel. About 120 to 130 miles empties the 17L tank. Still a great bike with amazing performance 👍
@@Banditmanuk Cumbria is a lovely place but tell everybody, its busy enough as it is 😉 Thanks for the honest answer, 39mpg isn't good is it. I'm thinking of a change and the MT10 is a consideration. I reckon they will be a hoot to ride.
It's certainly an iconic biker meet venue for anyone visiting the area for the first time. Probably a little too busy in summer for us locals. Yes we watched Rest day riders vid of the Dragon rally. Excellent 👍
Beyond gutted I didn't see you as I passed through twice that day! Drone shots at the beginning were fab and Via Gelia is best avoided off season as it can be horrendous with the mud/quarry dust! Speaking of parking charges at Matlock Bath, they did introduce a short stay rule and often have a warden walking about and timing people when they park up, and the bikes on the curb opposite lovers walk now get fined an all... Great video as always guys, can't beat some Derbyshire action, can you 😁
Yep Via Gellia was grim with quarry mud & dust, they should get sweepers going up and down. It would have been great if I had caught you in one of the passing shots on the street. At least we did actually meet by chance at the bikers breakfast. I've never seen a warden take a time on my number plate yet but guess it could happen one day. You would think the council would want to encourage bikers to spend their cash in the town. Not that I'm encouraging law breaking but if you're parked the other side and happen to leave your jacket draped over the rear of your bike..... Thanks for the kind words 👍
@@Banditmanuk sweepers!? We're lucky to get potholes filled round Derbyshire, forget about other road maintainance! 😆 I tend to go Matlock a few times a week most weeks, depending on the weather, and I've had a few conversations with the wardens, they seem nice enough but are there to do a job at the end of the day... catch people out who either don't know about the silly rules or don't keep track of time. I used to happen to hang my jacket off the rear rack myself come to think of it, but I never take my box off now so I just have to keep checking the time and looking for the parking rozzers instead 👮♂️🤣 P.S looking forward to catching up at one of the social rides next month 👍
First time to your channel and enjoyed the relaxed style and the format. I was lucky enough to live in Matlock for 3 years about 20 years ago and would frequently walk down to Matlock Bath to see the bikes. Not been there for a fair few years now but your video has made me realise a ride out there is long overdue. Ironically I have done more riding this winter than I have for many many years, and as a rule of thumb I try to avoid narrow country lanes purely to minimise the risk of an incident as they are generally covered in crud. As a first timer not sure if you have been there but Poole Quay has a 'bike-night' throughout the summer on a Tuesday evening. IMO it is one of the best, especially as it is set against the yachts in the harbour etc.
Welcome along to the channel. Think I've seen you commenting on other channels (TMF ??) We try to seek out quieter roads to ride away from the traffic. Unfortunately, some of these roads are not in great condition this time of the year. Would love to try Poole Quay but it's a long way for us from Ashby de la Zouch here in the Midlands. Appreciate you taking a look at our little channel, ride safe and best wishes from Carol and Richard
Wonderful video Richard. It seems that you two had a lot of fun among all those bikes there. You even found a selfie spot. :) That weed smoker tried to confuse you, but you were stronger. Joke. Got my like bro. p.s. I saw 2 Aston Martin over there. :)
We always try to have fun Gregor, it's what life is all about. I'm amazed at the number of folks who smoke weed but it's not for us.... We get all our fun & excitement riding motorcycles 😃
Guy's what ya doin !! greasy roads below 10 deg's has desperation kicked in ? 😉 "risky'' . Nice place to visit great to walk around and check out the bikes. Couple nice trikes although their not my thang really but you can appreciate the work in them and they certainly are not a cheap build either ,great place and fantastic watch just luv your vids on a Saturday morning guy's cheers 😉👌
Hi Jason. Thank you for subscribing. We are sort of Derbyshire/Leicestershire based near Ashby de la Zouch. What bike did you go for after passing your test, and are you still riding it?
Brilliant stuff. Right from the opening shot, I guess you were standing in the little rough layby at the top to operate the drone, but those corners were in my closing shots of my last Welsh video. As I was born on the Via Gellia you can call it whatever you like, but just remember this, the locals always called it the Via Jelly. Just think wibbly wobbly stuff at kids parties! That road by the way is always that bad as there is so many quarry wagons on there, until it dries up then it's dusty. We were riding to Matlock Bath most weekends from '79 until mid 80's usually about 5 of us, before life, love and work took over, along with marriage, mortgage, even more working and kids. News update for Via Gellia. 2.2 million being spent on 'improvements' including average speed cameras, traffic lights at the 5056 cross roads motorcycle crash barriers, pavements and road narrowing to slow traffic near Cromford. Enjoyed the video ride safe the pair of you.
We were indeed in that lay-by. Got it, Via Jelly 👌 Yep I know the quarry, left at the top of Via Gellia. Do find it depressing they are spending money on speed cameras when so many of the roads are in need of fixing. I was riding from 1980, until the mid 80s, same story for me. Ran a Z250 to work for a few years in the 90s and then picked it all back up again in the 2000's with a couple of Suzuki Bandits. Carol passed her test in 2012 at the same time as our eldest lad. Glad she did as we now have some great times on the bikes. Nice to hear from you, and thanks for watching.
I like Turquoise as a colour, especially for fountainpen ink! 🙂 Just not as a car colour 🤮 I think in some cultures it is considered Holy, and a bringer of good fortune. True story, many years ago now I parked in Matlock Bath and went for a wander, as you do. When I got back to the bike there were 4 people standing admiring the old girl ('85 Honda 500 XBR in Gloss Black) The 'Old Girl' was surrounded by much more exotic machinery.....the five of us chatted about what we had all owned back in the day...as you do.... interesting to see a lot of the bikes you showed in your video were nearly all 'old classics'? I used to take my bike to a guy in Stourbridge for it's MOT (I worked a stones throw away) He owned the place....he had a Blackbird....he'd had it a long time, and wanted a 'change' 'Trouble is, I can't see anything I'd want to change it for' He still had it as a daily user many years later 🤣
Good luck or not that car's colour was grim. You're so right about why folks like to just wander around and chat about bikes at Matlock. Carol asked me what I enjoyed most about making these daft RU-vid vids? I said it was the comments, chatting about bikes with like minded folks. It's true. I'm certainly drawn to the older machines, can appreciate the technical brilliance of the new bikes but think some of the fast older stuff required a higher level of skill and restraint to ride and remain in one piece. Thanks again for watching
The drop off system works really well, and yes the same person always stays at the very back. One of our lads enjoys marking a junction, then picks us off one at a time to get to the second position again, just so he can go back and do it all again😁 Those K1300's are great bikes with great engines....until they go wrong! And those Blackbirds are still a really quick bike even these days. One passed me a while ago and made me feel like I was parked up! That Yamaha was the Venture, watch it back it says it on the front. ( 1300cc V4 if I remember ) 1980's to 90's so it's getting on a bit now I would say. I'm sure it's engine was used in the V-Max but modified for more grunt. Matlock looks a busy old place, and those cafe's takeaways must do a roaring trade with the bikers. Another good video from you two, thank you.
So Carol was right on the drop off system. 👍 Brilliant knowledge on the bikes, did think the trike had the V4 engine. Matlock Bath is a strange place really but the long curved street with loads of parking is an ideal area to park and show off your ride.
Last two times I visited Matlock Bath it was absolutely 'grid locked' with cars and bikes...I think there were road works last year that forced you to take the High St....some very dubious 'filtering' on the 'cross hatches' on my part....😊. Richy is the only one that can pronouce Via Gellia properly 🤣
The place can be an overcrowded nightmare on some sunny days 😳 I'll have you know the 'Matlock Biker' said I pronounced Via Gellia correctly on one occasion 🤣🤣
Glad you enjoyed Matlock Bath, only wish I knew you were popping in I’d have arranged to bump into you again Yes you pronounced Via Gellia properly Correct, it’s the Derwent, the river that flows through Ladybower Reservoir and The Grand Pavilion is currently being restored inside, although you can’t see the work from the outside Enjoyed the vid, even though I can see what’s going on from my front window 😂
We did enjoy Matlock, it's part of biking tradition. We've got a friend John Commons of the Vic Bikers pub. If you look up his channel called John Commons he uploaded a vid shot there on a busy bike night in the 90s. Interesting how bikes have changed.
If there are that many bikes there in the cold, off season, Matlock Bath must be crazy during the summer!! You guys got to see SO many cool bikes!! Plus that place seems like a cool place to hangout. It has a nice atmosphere. Real good video guys!!
Thanks, really appreciate the kind words. Yes Matlock Bath is a sort of iconic bikers meeting place here in central England. Its a great place to park, look at bikes and just chill. We're lucky here as winters are not generally too bad so nice days riders turn out. Yes in summer it's a bit manic, not sure the authorities like the bikers and there's often a police presence. 99% are well behaved 😉
Nice video I normally eat fish and chips from Charlie’s that the green big restaurant the warm waters we’re just behind that old not so famous building anytime now you might be able to see he nee tiny baby trout fish amazing site that is 👍
just watched the rest and must say you both do a brilliant job . you have a new fan here . enjoyed it very much . next time we see you at Triumph I will buy you a coffee .this morning have been out locally on my new P C X. am up to nearly 30 miles on the clock now .!!
If I'm honest, when we rode in, it looked packed in Kostas. We've had great chips there as well. So many great rides in the area, but not today as it's throwing it down! Appreciate you taking the time to watch and comment.
Hi, thanks for watching. Loads of great roads in the Peaks. Will look so much nicer come spring and summer. You won't go far wrong going to Matlock Bath if you're looking for fish and chips. Cheers and safe riding
The best bit about biking is the unwritten rules of looking out for each other i.e letting them out bikers on junctions. Gotta ask, is that local fish n chips....🤣
2nd man drop off works as the 'last man' is designated at the start and remains the same person for the entirety of the ride. They will hang back and hold the traffic if necessary when the person dropped off has seen them and pulls off. It's a tried and tested method and we have been all over Europe using it without loosing anyone.
Cheers Mark, shows how much group riding we do. It's either just Carol and I or perhaps another couple with us. I remember many years ago doing Europe with a company called BiketoursUK. He gave you a few route notes and then headed off. Most days we lost a couple of folks 🤣
Beautiful beginning...looks so nice there the way the road winds through...pretty chilly, huh? We had snow for a few days but going to warm up here. Bet that mud was slippery...popular place for motorcyclists! Victorian spa...cool...fish, chips and peas...so are those split peas ...that's cool how you dip your fries (chips) in that...CBR 1100 beautiful! Cool fish!
We were so cold that day but worth it. Yep Matlock Bath is a traditional bike meet town in Central England. Formerly Victoria warm water spar retreat. Its as close as we get to a slightly tacky but fun seaside resort that's as far from the coast as possible.
Loved the intro 👌do like a day or weekend In Matlock definitely got some beautiful roads 👌 the big Yamaha trike was a Yamaha royal it was Yamahas attempt to take on the mighty gold wing , unfortunately it never did love this channel keep up the good work 🙏
Wasn't aware of the Royal. I guess it never sold in numbers. Was a bit chilly on our visit but Matlock has to be done by bike a couple of times a year. Always good to hear from you
@@Banditmanuk as far as I can remember it was only ever for the USA 🇺🇸 market I only know this as my dad had the same trike I even thought that might have been his lol 😂
Hi Carol and Richard, great video, some wonderful roads up there. The roads generally seem to be in a shocking state this year. Haven’t been specifically to Matlock for a few years but have passed through numerous times on route elsewhere. The last time I specifically went there I took the wife on my CB1000 for chips but when we arrived I realised I’d left my wallet at home and we hadn’t got a penny to our name or a credit or debit card between us so no fish and chip! And, to cap it off my fuel light came on as we arrived! Suffice to say I had to sedately ride the 60 miles home and believe it or not we made it back 😂 wonderful video as always, thank you👍🏻
Good job you were riding a CB1000 for that Matlock run. On an MT10 (Empty 10) you would have been pushing it after 20 miles with the fuel light on! Great story 👍 Appreciate the kind comments. Cheers
When running the drop off system, the tail end charlie always stays the same rider so everyone knows who is the last bike! 🙂 I've ridden through before, but not stopped I don't think.... With all that competition for fish and chips, you'd hope they had the best chips ever! 🙂
I guess I should have known really. Just don't usually do group rides. Matlock Bath probably has the greatest concentration of chip shops of any town I know. Fish and chips were good. Every place looked busy
Well done Richard & Carol Another banging video Matlock great place and Wow lovely Fish & Chips Will have to go this summer with my brother and the Barlaston Bikers 😊😊
Plenty of great roads in the area. I've plenty of Best Biking Road vids of the Peak District 😉 Fish & chips in Matlock is a great reward after a long ride.
Been to Matlock Bath many times ,but not in recent years , going to enjoy the other three quarters of the vid .later . the mighty M T 10 .our son had one . I took it to Alf Englands for its 1st service as Chris was in hospital .wow the power was amazing .I got used to it on the way home .you certainly use the throttle sparingly .
I love the MT10, great hooligan sort of a machine. I'm just cautious about what I upload to RU-vid. It's not worth posting anything that folks will report you for. After all, it will break the national speed limit in 1st gear!
@@Banditmanuk have had a few moments over the years .not broke the law speeding on purpose but once outran a jam butty . plus one or two other things .
Good stuff! The two black ZZR1400's were Gen1 models, the Green/black is a Gen2, even though I live hours away I've been a few times, did the Heights of Abraham and all the nearby caves. Carol, if a ZZR14 is too big what about Harleys, Gold Wings, K1600's etc ?
Thanks, I'm a massive fan of the ZZR1400. Think Carol is attracted to bikes small enough to suit her height and size. Me, I love most bikes but not much point in having bikes suited to two up touring when we both ride. Saying that, I would love to try a Rocket 3.
@@Banditmanuk I'm a massive Kawasaki fan so very biased lol. but I'm only 5'7" in my Daytona's but you must not let being a short arse spoil your dreams! The new Rocket 3 looks a fabulous piece of kit, I also have a Thruxton which although not a distance tool is a wonderful hoot to ride for a hour or so. Best Wishes.
@@davidreed6817 Not sure if you follow a chap called the Flat Cap Cafe Racer, also has a Thruxton which he races on the Bonneville salt and also uses on the roads. Nice guy as well.
What a quaint town Matlock is and still busy considering the time of the year. The Scotsman in me reels at £15 for fish and chips, you'd think with all the completion prices would be more competitive. Cheers for showing us all the bikes, it's always good to see what other people are riding. Carol is warming to the ZZR, no mention of looks other than looking too big. Your a big guy Richard it would fit you like a glove and is the perfect blend of power and touring comfort. Thanks for another entertaining video 👍😀
@@Banditmanuk I did wonder that but these days nothing is a surprise as far as price is concerned. They say every biker should try the ZZR, if ever there's one in a dealer near you see if you can get a try. Go for the Gen 2 though, the Gen 1 has no traction control, Rythmic Biker is finding out the hard way, I did try to tell him. Some bikers argue your throttle hand should be all the control you need but we're talking about massive amounts of torque. The choice of tyres also is hugely important. I'm close to pulling the trigger on the big trumpet, hopefully next week. I went to see and sit on a couple in Glasgow, didn't a fancy test ride in unfamiliar surroundings. However the one I'm after is down south, a limited edition colour scheme 😯😎
@@greywolf9292 R B hasn't crashed it I hope! TC is something I leave switched on if I've got it. The big Trumpet probably is the ultimate torque monster.
@@Banditmanuk No RB hasn't crashed it but he's having to learn to use his right hand as traction control, the back end goes out on him occasionally 😯 Imagine the big Trumpet without TC, you'd end up up a tree as it went into full launch mode. I had a look at the chrome Thruxton RS that's a stunning bike but looks a little small for me and all you'd see reflecting in the tank would be my big belly 😟 Another one I fancied and had a look at was the Speed Master, it's much lower and smaller than I imagined and probably not thrilling enough.
I just noticed you have the Insta360 hitched up to a rode wireless Mic. do you just have your mic in the helmet or do you run a mic into the helmet via the wireless mic. Sorry for asking but I've contemplated on getting the rode system. the sound is great!
My wife and I record our duel audio to a single insta camera using the Rode system (two senders and one receiver) In some shots you can make out we have the Rode senders fixed to the outside of our helmets. We plug our Hamo laptop microphones into these with the foam end just positioned in the chins to the side of our mouths. Receiver set to merged, and -15db. I bring the volume back up in the edit. Our coms are Cardo Packtalk Bold, but we don't record that audio. Main helmet cam is DJI Action 3 There's a vid back in the channel of the actual set up. In this vid when we arrived in Matlock we used the Rode system to capture the audio as we walked around I should add that the Rode Microphones last most of a day, so great when we're away recording a foreign tour
@1. Put On Your Lid Yes, not bad at all. I try to keep the receiver in front of me and behind Carol. It's got less range than the Cardo Coms but it still easily works with a car between us. If you check our Tenerife tour vids it will give you a good idea of the range and distance we ride apart. You can also set the Rode sender to record a safety track if it gets out of range of the receiver
