Around mid June my friends and I went Bow-Fishing and ended up with a cooler full (50-60lbs) of Gar and catfish. Each Mango tree, Avocado and Bananas got 2 or 3 full size fish chopped up with the shovel in the hole. So far so good!

Great to hear from you Sherie! And good to know that I am not the only one burying fish! :) The only time of the year for doing this technique is spring and summer--as doing so in fall or winter most likely will result in rot as the soil microbes are not as active during the cooler months. I hope your house plants are doing better (less smelly) now? Talk to you soon! Charles :)
@realtorbydaychefbynight
@realtorbydaychefbynight 8 лет назад
Thanks Charles, and yes, less smelly now. Here's what happene: I had one little tree that I keep in the bathroom- a lucky money tree. After applying the worm castings and bloodmeal plus some ironite stuff like I did to the others I told you about, I had little flies that were like fruit flies but larger that were crawling in and out of the soil and around the rim of the pot! Since it sits on the vanity in my bathroom, I was staring into this soil 2 or 3 times a day and watching these nasty little flies crawling around while I was brushing my teeth! By the 2nd day I was grossed out and sprayed the top of the soil several times with dawn dish soap and water. I figured it would be my little experiment to see how it affected things. Within a day or so the flies were dead but the soil in that pot turned yucky and smelled of ammonia. It wasn't something you could notice from afar... I actually smelled the soil a few times to see how it was doing throughout this process and noticed the ammonia smell. Ewww! It was gross.. So I scraped all the top soil and all the amendments I added up, tossed that crud under my rose bush out back and drenched the soil to sort of "wash it" through. Then I top dressed the tree with brand new soil, miracle grow beads, ironite (tiny, tiny bit) and bloodmeal. So far it has been fine ever since. The tree never seemed to care about any of this the whole time. It's been fine through all of this. As for all the others, I have actually chosen to just ignore the issue in all of the other plants because they're not getting flies and the mildew has more or less resolved itself at this point with nothing more than me raking it around a few times. If it becomes an issue, I'm breakin' out the shop vac and sucking the top layer off of all the pots and redressing them all sans worm poo and humus. I won't be using worm castings or humus indoors anymore though- one or the other of those 2 was the culprit. I'll be sure to not apply that to the plants after about 4th of July so it can do it's thing outdoors and be fine by the time I bring them inside for winter.

After all experiments I have done .,Sardines fish is the Best of the best fertilizer feed and most beneficial So far . Lost and lots of phosphorus , potassium and other minerals . I have used it on my blueberry plants by placing it in a circle around the bush and covered the fish with 8 inches of pine needles mixed with acidifier. Results was incredible foliage and loaded with abundant of big size of blues fruit .

I did add some trout to one of my tomato plants to see if it makes a difference. Also besides adding fish emulsion I also add liquid seaweed powder form which will make 65 gal. It has up to 70 nutrients to the soil been doing that for years. It keeps any over wintered cuttings very green.

@adambyrd5401

I have used this method before with success. Really any organic material you can add to your soil goes a long way. If I don't have smelly old fish around or feel like dealing with it you can substitute fresh green plant matter, or your used coffee wrapped up in a coffee filter, and just plop that in the hole same way you did with the fish. I also make sure to do this when planting a tree out into the yard for the first time so the roots can grow into a slow release fuel source to make sure they have a healthy start to get established. Eating a banana or two and throwing the peels in with the nitrogen source also seems to do wonders. You get a snack, and your tree gets a snack...win-win.

All excellent tips Adam!!! Regarding the coffee grounds-- I do not drink coffee, but a few time a year, I give Starbucks coffee shop an hour notice that I coming to pick up there coffee grounds and usually leave with a trash bag full of grounds, which I like to add to a compost bin with other ingredients (a more balanced organic fertilizer) before introducing to the garden. Here is a link to that video I did earlier this year: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-yZ_eBspGgqI.html Happy gardening! Charles :)

Im not convinced how much fish emulsion helps, but I am convinced about fish parts for tomatoes. I get whole fish from wherever thaw it out chop it up around my plants and let it work. Because Im a worm farmer for castings "black gold" it is best to cut up the the fish parts into small parts and the worms go to work on it and give back castings to the soil. The bacteria breaks down the fish so worms can eat it. So theres more to the story than just burying fish.
@yes350yes

BTW I have found putting the fish parts higher up in the soil as shown here as opposed to burying it deep is best. You just make allowances for critters that might dig it up.

Thanks for the video. I appreciate your approach to these videos and I've gained a lot of useful information. I just bought two citrus plants (1x lime and 1x kumquat plant). They are in 3-4 gallon containers and I was wondering if I can use this similar fertilising method for potted plants?
@IVOrganic
@IVOrganic 8 лет назад
Hello David. Thank you for your support! Yes, this method can be applied potted plants too. However, be careful when using potting mixes that may start sterile (without any beneficial bacteria, nematodes, worms, etc). For this method to work best, there must be a lot of living organisms in the soil to break down the organic material. So start slow with the organic fertilizing and build up to the recommended amounts over the course of a few months. It would be a good idea to also add just a little (5%) native soil (hopefully with a few worms) the get a head start on getting living organisms into the potting soil. Also, cut back on fertilizing in general in the winter (actually you do not need to fertilze citrus in the winter-- consider using a foliar nutritional spay in January/ February only) as the metabolism of the living organisms in your soil also slow down and you do not want the soil to rot with too much organic fertilizer. Good luck and keep me posted! :-) Charles

I also learned how to use 2 $1 buckets, drill holes in one bucket and put your just picked fruit and veggies into the one with the holes. Wash it off from your hose and it will drain into the second bucket.. then put them in another place to bring in the house after sting out a bit.. then use the water Again into your garden.. it has all the natural organic fertilizer in it. Hey Charles I seen on other videos to not fertilize in the fall I live in Riverside CA so about a hr or so from u inland. Is it ok to fertilize? My plan well I've started doing was fertilizing but going very light on the nitrogen. Is there a need to worry with are climate it's still fairly warm out this way. Also my mulch and organic matter is breaking down really well do I let it break down a lot before adding more or add more at first sign of
@IVOrganic
@IVOrganic 8 лет назад
Hello Casey Gould, I just noticed your comment... Sorry for my delay. Those that live in colder parts of the country may skip fertilizing in the fall because it gets so cold so early. Organic fertilizers are dependent on warmer conditions and and an active soil biology. In the winter, even if its a warm winter, both deciduous and ever green tree's metabolism slow down a lot-- So no need to feed. However, a balanced fertilizer in the fall can ensure the plant has all it needs in the winter to give an amazing bloom and support quality fruit in the spring. Start fertlizing slowly/ lighly in early spring, with the heaviest feeding in summer... and then in fall begin to slow down on how much your are offering your plants. I hope this helps! Please keep me posted! :) Charles

@IVOrganic 7 лет назад
Hello CaseGsGreens CG, Many of the oils in IV Organic 3-in-1 Plant Guard naturally repel ants from colonizing within your plants. Note, the product does not kill ants, nor any other pests (unless they are smothered by the product). Rather, it protects coated surfaces from ants, termintes, beetles... and a long list of boring, sucking and piercing insects from harming the plants coated with IV Organic. Can you tell more about how the ants are effecting your plants and/ or trees? For example, I had a fig tree where the pith was hallow and the ants colonized themselves within the tree, and the area was sealed with IV Organic. Another example was a mature sunburned apple tree that had no bark on 1/2 of the trunk (the sunny side) that was plagued by beetles, termites and ants-- which was coated with 2 coates of the IV Organic brush-on solution. And for the first year the owner will monitor the tree and continue to monitor and patch any holes until the tree eventurally recovers over the wounds. I hope this helps! Charles :-)

You didn't give the bears enough credit especially the mothers, whey will leave cubs up a hill or back in the brushes sometimes quite a way back in the forest to protect them from males at the stream but will bring fish to them. Quite often leaving quite a lot of the fish to rot at the peek of the run. Just adding my two cents to a great video.

@IVOrganic
@IVOrganic 7 лет назад
Hello Sabrina, That's the goal... All organic... and No chemicals! At the end of the day, you'll have healthier fruits and vegetables while also saving the local stream, lakes and ocean from chemical fertilizers and pesticides... ultimately Earth! :) Here is a video I published a few months ago on leaf miners (which is my #1 or #2 worst pest in my garden -- the other being moles). ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Y6VdWAPiNhQ.html Let me know if you have any other questions! Your friend, Charles :)

Our well known gardening guru thinks, placing fish heads into the soil wont breakdown; they need sufficient bacteria. She recommends to first chop fish heads and place in a large sealable container full of water and ferment for 2 months. What do you think on this? Not criticizing, just confused.

Of course they will break down otherwise you could dig up a perfectly intact fish in a year's time but that obviously won't happen lol. Fermenting fish in a bucket of water with a handful of leaf mould or compost is a good way to make liquid fish fertilizer though.

You do not need lime for the fish. Just cover them with compost. He needs to fillet and eat the fish first. I put so many fish in my garden and compost pile there are fish bones everywhere. My chard looks like something from the Jurassic park set.

Can you use that fish fertilizer on them.. When they are seeds or no
@IVOrganic
@IVOrganic 5 лет назад
Hello Carl Dearman . I do not recommend fertilizing seeds. If you are eager to start fertilizing your seedlings, start very slow & very dilute.... something like a few tablespoons per gallon of water. Note, the young tender leaves & plant may react negatively to having fertilizer (such as fish fertilizer) on it leaves. Proceed with caution, and certainly you can feed the plants more as they mature! Keep me posted!!! Charles :-)

Hello MrBey735 . I'd use the frozen fish... it will be good. Fresh naturally would be better. Either way, do not add fish (or any other strong feedings) during the winter. Wait until spring or summer for better results! Keep me posted on your growing successes! Charles :-)

What's your opinion on using fresh water fish guts for making emulsion?
@IVOrganic
@IVOrganic 5 лет назад
Hello Sugga Daddi! Yes, a great idea! Your plants will love it!!! Use only spring, summer & early fall; once the soil warms up and has a lot of soil biology to quickly beakdown the parts (and associated smell). Scent should be gone within 2-3 days, tops in a healthy soil environment. Hoping this growing season will be your BEST!!! Keep me posted! Charles :-)

That will work just fine. Friend of mine ran a bait shop and always tossed dead minnows in the freezer all year and used them on his tomato seedlings. Also sometimes was given leftover wild caught baitfish by fishermen which he also used.

what kid of fish you use? fresh water fish? or fish from sea?
@IVOrganic
@IVOrganic 7 лет назад
Hello Yoga Wirasmoyo, Either fresh or salt is fine! Salt water fish do not have significantly more salt, than fresh water fish-- In fact, they may be close to identical. The goal is you are adding the elements from their flesh to the soil, making them available to the surrounding plants and trees. Keep me posted on your growing successes! Charles :-)

Are you sure you do not get nasty animals around the veggie garden? Usually all organic gardeners suggest not to use fish , meat or watever will end attracting rats or similars, and, what it concerns me too is the smell... wouldn't be an awfull decomposition dead corpse smell?
@valerieelfering692
@valerieelfering692 6 лет назад
Romeo Hosang I don't believe so. If you have a healthy soil that fish will probably be mostly eaten in about a few weeks, the meat anyways. The bones may take a little longer. All the decomposers will take care of it pretty quickly especially if it's blended into such small pieces.

Hi... Good to know the tips Charles. I am just wondering,, do this buried fish method can be applicable to ginger planting? Since it have active growing rhizome and will it cost a rotten rhizome when it interact with the buried fish?
@IVOrganic
@IVOrganic 6 лет назад
Hello Ariya Dwinanto. Yes, this method works on all plants. However, it is best during the growing season and while the soil organism are most active to break down the organic matter (fish). So spring, summer and early fall would be the only times I would consider feeding your plants. Keep me posted on your growing successes! Charles :-)

Great tip! Just subscribed. One question: if my trees are larger than the one in your video, should I bury the fish further away from the trunk than the 1 foot in your video? Is there a guideline how far away from the trunk in relationship to the tree size? Thanks!
