@@matt7iron Supposedly, it's because US government was pissed at the viets for selling cheap catfish, lol. From wikipedia: "Catfish war" in the U.S. In 2002, the United States accused Vietnam of dumping catfish, namely P. bocourti and P. hypophthalmus, on the American market, arguing that the Vietnamese exporters, who are subsidised by Vietnam's government, constituted unfair competition.[9][10] With pressures from the U.S. catfish industry, the United States Congress passed a law in 2003 preventing the imported fish from being labelled as catfish, as well as imposing additional tariffs on the imported fish.[11] Under the U.S. Food and Drug Administration ruling, only species from the family Ictaluridae can be sold as true catfish.[3] As a result, the Vietnamese exporters of this fish now label their products sold in the U.S. as basa fish, striped pangasius, swai or bocourti.[12][13] At the height of the "catfish war", U.S. catfish farmers and others were describing the imported catfish as an inferior product. However, Mississippi State University researchers found imported basa were preferred three-to-one to US catfish in a small (58 testers) blind taste test.[14]
@@matt7iron it's just propaganda from the competition fish industry. Please watch the youtube video from a Dutch university - Is Pangasius safe to eat. They examined the fish from 2008 to 2014 for all possible contaminants and there were no toxic chemicals like mercury or others in it at all. Just absolute mini-amounts of pesticide and antibiotic residues. According to their research it is absolutely safe to eat in the EU and the US even in very high amounts - esp. with the asc seal or others.
Whomever commented that your accent is annoying is very rude... Your video was very informative and well spoken. Your response to that person was also very polite! Thank you.
A lot of restaurants here in Sydney I know dont label what species of fish they serve in their dishes which they are trying to hide on purpose because it is always Basa, they would jack up the prices and sell at a premium all whilst selling a cheap crap fish that can be bought by the kilo for a few dollars
Pangasius fish is an alternative to cod and haddock which are often produced through sustainable fishery. There is no way to further increase supply of white fish through fisheries. So your alternative will be farmed white fish such catfish, barramundi and tilapia. Catfish and tilapia have no need for fish meal to meet their basal nutritional needs and can be met entirely with plant-based protein. The species itself is not the issue, it is the practice
Predominantly farmed in Vietnam’s Mekong Delta, from where it originates, Pangasianodon hypophthalmus is the most commonly produced pangasius species in aquaculture. It is also the most consumed in Europe and over 130 other countries around the world. Pangasius requires a relatively low level of feed input. This means that it is comparatively cheap to produce and environmentally friendly. These fish are also fast growing and reach market size of around 1kg in six to eight months.
🤔 sustainable farming is the only future for sure. Just can’t keep exploiting the sea.😔 The fishery looks very well kept 👍 and the fish look healthy 👍 The water is coloured as these fish are naturally bottom feeders and spend a lot of time rooting out the fish food that’s sunk to the bottom. Scare mongers in the comments 🙄 , Heavy Metals in the fish? This fishery is a controlled environment, high density farming has the potential for disease and as such everything has to be super clean. Micro plastics are now being found in wild fish stocks and shellfish all around the world ☹️ wild fish aren’t always safe and not always suitable. 🇬🇧fish farming the future 👍🇬🇧
There are so many things wrong with these fish. It's not just the filthy water, or the chemically enriched food, and the over crowded conditions. These fish are predominantly bottom feeders too. They feed on the top during feeding time but then return to the bottom to scavange. All of the fish faeces, dead fish and any other contaminants that sink to the bottom are sifted through and often eaten as well. Its truely disgusting. There have been several scientific examinations of the flesh which have found high levels of heavy metal, especially mercury, which is extremely harmful to humans even in tiny amounts. Eat this fish at your peril. Farmed fish are always dreadful, but this one is exceptionally bad. Vietnam and Cambodia are not known for their health and safety standards, food standards or animal welfare standards. They are known for producing vast and cheap quantities of whatever product they turn their eye to, using unskilled labour and whatever chemicals speed up the process regardless of environmental costs
Hey bub i gotts 3 questions for ya, no 1 does the cold water kills the bacteria, no 2 if i buy deep fried Basa does that kill the poison, no 3, why dosen't the FDA stop it from entering the USA if its so bad.
Hi PuirYorick, This is local fish food. For many species such as trout they add colorant such as astaxanthin to make the flesh red/orange but I don't believe they use such a thing into the basa feed as the market want a white flesh. Cheers
I'm all for sustainable fish farming. It takes work but it is future proof. If the oceans get depleted, these farms will keep going.I think these fish are suited for it as they handle stress, dirty water and overcrowding well.I can buy 1kg of this in Australia for $9 AUD so it's the cheapest fish I can get
I bought 2 skinless smoked Basa fillets today in my supermarket because it is cheap. The package has no warning that it is toxic! One of the fish is not fit for human consumption according to RU-vid.
Yes it’s my favourite fish. I like the plain flavour and the texture. However I can’t buy it anymore here in Australia because it’s all from the Mekong and people telling me it’s unsafe
