Today I will show you how you can use your standard flake food to make an eatable film on aquarium wood, rock and other structures. You probably already have all the ingredients in your house.
In natural habitats quite a lot of the creatures we keep in our aquariums spend a lot of their time grazing on aufwuch. This adopted German term (meaning 'surface growth´) is often used to describe the mix of plants, animals and detritus adhering to solid surfaces such as rocks, wood or vegetation in aquatic environments.
You can think of it as an eatable biofilm that fish graze on. Plecos, otocinclus, hill stream loaches and a bunch of other popular aquarium fish do this for a living, literally speaking. As do snails and shrimps. Some of these actually need to digest a bit of wood along with the biofilm.
In this video I use flake food. You can use crushed pellets, mashed green peas, repashy and a lot of other stuff as well.
Try this little DIY tip, and make your plecos, shrimps and other grazers happy.
Thanks for watching :0)
Cheers, Michael

Great idea I had 13 otocinclus fry couldn't get them to eat. Bet this would have worked spreading spiralina power and decapsulated brine shrimp eggs on wood. Thanks for great idea.

Thanks for your feedback Barb. Basically you can use most comon Auqarium foods this way. Mixing it up with repashy is great as well. The spirulina/brine shrimp combo sounds great. I'm quite impressed that you had otocinclus fry. Not easy to breed those. Gongrats. Cheers, Michael :0)

Thanks Atabapo. You are right. Repashy is easier to work with, and I have a video on that in the pipeline as well. But it is not as available everywhere in every local pet shop. Everybody has some flake food in their home ;0) Cheers, Michael :0)

Hi guys. Excellent video Michael! It was like watching a National Geographic special. Very informative and relaxing too! Well I put a reminder in to the kennel CEO for the pup pics. Soon as she loads them up I'll shoot 'em out to you. Hope all is well, take care! :o)

Thanks my friend. Oh yeah, Ulla and I are seriously considering a new Lab at the moment (she is a bit more serious than I am :0) Our old dog (actually our son Daniel's dog) is getting old. 12 years now. It sleeps most of th day ;0) All well here. Hope you and your family are sound and safe. Cheers, Michael :0)

Interesting tip, can you prepare ahead of time and freeze ?
@MichaelJensensAquarium
@MichaelJensensAquarium 3 года назад
Hi Paul. Yep, no problem - but the food might work a bit loose during the freezing proces - since the natural wood probably will shrimp a bit when it is cooled. Actually I've had a couple of these food-woods lying in my aquarium room for a week with no problems. When the food is dry again, after the secondt baking... it is just dried flake food. If it is kept dry, it can last a long time without any problems - even without freezing. But the quality of the ingredients might decrease a bit with time. Thanks for your feedback. Cheers, Michael :0)

thanks for the tips! do you reckon it would work if i put the wood in the fridge after applying the paste, instead of putting it in the oven?
@MichaelJensensAquarium
@MichaelJensensAquarium Месяц назад
It might work, but I haven't tried that. I think it should go in the oven first, so it dries up, before it goes in the fridge. Cheers, Michael :0)
