thank you so much for posting this. my swordtail is pregnant and i wanted to know how it would look like when she gave burth. now i know. thanks again.
yes, the males have an extended tail fin at the bottom of it, hence the name swordtail, i bought 2 yesterday, 1 male and 1 female. the female i think is pregnant, it has the dark spot on her abdomen and im hoping for the patter of tiny fins soon :D
Very interesting, thanks for sharing :) I got these two male goldfish in a pond chasing the hell out of another goldfish, ya don't think one of them is trying to mate.....I'm clueless bout fish and there cycle of life....I'm hoping i'll have lil fishy's in the pond anyway.
Interesting. I knew some fish gave live birth but I never saw an example before. Now I'm curious about how internal fertilization occurred. I've seen sharks do it and it looks like a really involved process. I wonder how these fish conjugate.
You can feed the babies on egg yoke and theres special fry food you can get from the pet shop. Also feed them on newly hatched brime shrimp but you might have to hatch your own.
At first they wont really move or anything, but give it a few hours, up to a day, and they will all be swimming. Some fry are born natural swimmers though, most of them sit at the bottom for awhile.
how many survived? mine had 45 and only 7 are still alive! apparently my nitrite levels were too high so i am trying to fix that problem. i am really upset. i hope yours fared better than mine.
I bought a new female for the 60 gallon tank the other day. When I introduced her to the tank, it took all of 15 seconds for the male to mount her. Never seen anything like that before...
How did you know to start recording when this was happening??? have you had her in the fry box for awhile and just noticed? idk i've had prego black mollies foreverrrr and they just wont have their darn babies! - i only have one baby about a cm long :)
im not too sure, but you can tell when they're pregnant because you can really see the bump. my swordtail was quite small when she gave birth and she wasnt even that old!
@XxSetTripp1n fish like mollies, swordtails, and guppies are live bearers, meaning they dont lay eggs, some fish build nests on the surface out of bubbles and others just scatter and leave the eggs. just thought i'd make it sound like my fisheries management course actually taught me something haha
@dannycrompton89 How do get your swordtail to be so calm? mine was very agitated when i put it in ( i have the same breeder box as you), but i think its not yet ready to give birth?
I was quite lucky, I caught her going into labor, i've read however, its very stressful to move a fish when in labor. My swordtail had a bulging belly, like she was going to pop. I guess that's when you know she's ready. unless its a big trap or a separate tank, I wouldn't recommend putting the fish into the trap, if your unsure when she's due. Hope that helps :]]] x
mine ate all the younglings...i was so disappointed...i didn't use a breeding trap,i am an idiot!!!do you know how often they breed?i want to see babies again...
@9brook4 I think I just caught her in the early stages of labour. I wasn't planning on using the breeding trap, but I changed my mind last minute as I thought it was a safer option!
Where did y get that breeding tank? Is it home made? Bc I have a net but the mom always eats them when they reach the bottom of the net. Please respond back!
do they get clearer after they loose there yolk becouse i found something that look like those but are clear in my tank so i put the two that i found in a breeder but i also have ick in my tank so i am wondering if it is the free swimming ick watch my video and tell me
Did you just take a video of my fish giving birth yesterday and put it on youtube? BECAUSE I HAVE THE SAME EXACT COLOR OF THE MOM, AND SOME OF THE EGGS AREN'T FERTILIZED AND ALL THE BABIES ARE ORANGE!!!!!! >:X
The best thing to do is to separate the pregnant fish. The productivity of this kind of method is low due to the fact that the pregnant female fish is in stress. She should not be disturbed, the main reason is: 1. There more unfertilized eggs. 2. They will eat their offspring. Why? They better eat their youngs than being killed by some predator. It's a fish instinct. I love aquarium fishes, and I have lots of it :D
i wonder why they call it swordtail when it doesnt have a sword on its tail and just to share i have 2 swordtail 2 bumblebees a suckerfish and 2 male fighting fish (seperated)
+Stephen Bamber It's probably a hybrid given the ' twin bar ' markings, but this is a swordtail. I have both platys and swordtails ( male and female swords ) females don't have the sword, but platys are a bit more stubby looking than she is so I don't think she's a platy.
You shouldn't use fish for the nitrogen cycle- you should use flake fish food or pure ammonia. Otherwise you have to do 50% water changes every other day to keep the fish alive- with flake food you just have to stir up the gravel to keep the food from getting buried and with ammonia you don't have to do anything at all.
how do you know if she's pregant or not? i mean, my female is with a male, and he ignored her after he tried sticking his tail into her. i mean, yours looks pretty normal and not bloated pregnant fat or anything..
I have that kind of fish all of them and I'm lucky cuz they keep getting pregnant and i always end up getting a full tank! Also if it is pregnant then it has to have a big tummy and eat alot and not many swim fast those were symptoms of my fish just some info if you needed it
