That saltwater tank was way over stocked. The corals were perfect, but the yellow and hippo tangs need bigger tanks. The small convict was okay. And damsels are a good choice. But Dory and the yellow one are not going to be okay long term.
so true my friend. i submitted that tank with the permission of the owner. The tank was a mess when i got to it and already heavily overstocked including all the tangs. Together the owner and I worked out a better maintenance plan and feeding schedule, refugium, wavemaker, and a few other changes that really helped turn the water chemistry around. It made the fish all so much less stressed and allowed corals to thrive. but the poor tangs are definitely not an apropriate stocking choice for the auarium size. The hippo tang especially really needs much more space. But the owner is very attached to the fish and is determined to keep them. I will admit i am shocked at how little stress the fish in this tank exibit but definitely this heavy stocking with the large fish is not good to emulate.
Correct me if I'm wrong as I just picked up a 40 gallon last night for my first reef tank, but one of the bigger channels I've been watching said on one of their videos that people will grow out yellow tangs in smaller tanks and use them as a utilitarian fish for algae control, and trade them out for smaller ones as they outgrow the tank. Can't say the same for Dory, as they've all been saying stay away from them unless you have a really big tank, and fish that are a little tougher because Dory is actually one of the bigger jerks in the saltwater world.
@@_Clayton.Bigsby_ you're not wrong, and you totally can do that, but moving fish from tank to tank can also be stressful experiences, so if you want a utilitarian fish like a tang that you don't have to get rid of, you could get an algae eating blenny
Everything Jumps. My Kholi Loach launched himself out of the tank through the feeding hold, thought he was a pile of poop on the ground. Found him probably minutes before he dried out, survived a 4 foot drop and being out of the water till he was sticky instead of wet. Still alive a year later.
QOTW! Fun fact about me: I am told that the first word I learned to read was "Zoo" from the road signs on our way to frequently visit the Minnesota Zoo. And now I'm zookeeper!
Aquatic Sealife is my local fish store. I have been shopping there since I got into the hobby. The new owners have been working hard to get the business going again in a new location. I am so sorry to see the tank failure. It's also crazy that I learned about the incident from FTR. I met the current business owner who shared his story with me. He said that he wanted to buy a large fish tank and ended up buying the whole business from the previous owners.
It especially sucks because owning a fish store is not like a normal business. The profit margins can be very tight, it's a ton of work and upkeep, and the property insurance for a place holding thousands of gallons of water is going to be ridiculously expensive. It's a business that people go into for the passion, so for that owner I'm sure it was emotionally devastating to walk in the next morning and see that :/
I found a tape worm crawling out of my substrate after setting up a new dirted tank. I plucked it out with tweezers and luckily it seems to have been the only one. Everything used was store bought. I can only assume the sand or soil can have dormant eggs.
That's seriously gross! But yes, the eggs are pooped out by wildlife coming to drink from a stream or pond so if you did full nature dirted from a local water source you prob got some critter poop too.😉✌️
qotw: I found an abandoned Chihuahua in the street, on my birthday, less than 24 hours after telling a friend that I did not want a small dog. It's been 8 years now and Frodo is still my sweet little Hobbit boy (he's the one in my pic) and currently on my lap as I type this 💜
Aw, my husband found out first chihuahua in the street. She had run out in front of his car and there was a woman nearby watering her lawn and when he asked her if it was her dog she said "yes do you want her?" He had never had small dogs and now he says he'll never live without a Chihuahua!
Still can't get over the explosion proof dinosaur egg fish tank ... QOTW: I am somehow allergic to penicillin. Had to take some when I was like 4-5ish and it caused my whole body to break out in hives, so basically if I ever need antibiotics, I gotta pony up the money for the rare stuff.
I once wanted to try doing a fancy scape, in an open top tank, with the driftwood sticking out at the top, but I was worried about fish jumping out, and went to Google to see if there were any fish that are not tempted to try carpet surfing. There, I found a valuable piece of information on one of the forums, that will stay with me for the rest of my life: "The only fish that doesn't jump is a dead one." Lids for life. I ain't risking it.
The scariest thing I've ever seen in my tank was my adult turtle pooping out a very long tapeworm. I don't have the funds to take him to an exotic vet and talked to my local fish and reptile store. Apparently turtles can be treated with the same type of dewormer as dogs but in a smaller dose. The reptile lady also said turtles live in the wild with all kinds of parasites and it's been months with no further developments. Always wash your plants before adding them to your tank! Learned that the hard way.
I used to have a cat who could use the toilet. And he would show off for new people. Whenever someone he didn't know came over, he would go pee in the toilet. He was my favorite fat black kitty and I miss him so. 😢😢
Fun fact: I'm a taxidermist (not professionally, just for anatomy study for my artwork), usually gives people a good shock in those awkward introduction stages😂 Also can you make a video on Repashy? Maybe his tank set up? I just got my 2nd crested gecko and i am so in love with them! One is in his own bioactive enclosure and i am currently setting up a bioactive enclosure for my recent crested gecko edition. Love your content so much, and my guy doesnt even take holidays, the commitment to the FTR is 5/5
Notification for this video caught me browsing for a new tank online, so... thank you from my wallet I guess. Qtwa: Usually I'd go with the fact that as a child, I caught malaria on a trip to Zimbabwe. We were staying in a kind of luxury tree house and what I took for fever hallucinations turned out to be my parents trying to remove a Giant African Bullfrog from the canopy of my bed. >>' If we're going with fish related facts, I once got to feed and pet Longfin Eels in a pond in New Zealand.
There are "plants" for marine tanks you know. Long as you're not trying to keep any ultra sensitive corals, you can do a marine walstad equivalent by filling it with macroalgaes
@@anacsadder Not an ideal type of macroalgae for an aquarium because of it's growth habit and preferred conditions. There are a number of varieties available in the trade that will do well in room temperature water, or with a small heater.
"Explosion proof" usually means that it won't create electronic sparks in environments with flammable gas. Which is of course a very relevant criterium for a fish tank...
"Could you not have showcased your container in anything other than a tictac container?" Brilliant. Gosh they even *show* you that's too ridiculously small for a goldfish Oh geez, read about that tank in the comment and it is *definitely* too small for tangs. They need at least a 6 ft tank You can tell the blue tang is too big, the little sailfin tang is gonna be getting huge, and even the yellow tang needs a minimum of a 4ft tank with bigger being better There's also a few damselfish in there and these guys get pretty aggressive, especially as they get older, pretty sure that striped damsel is one of the most aggressive... Panda garra on the leaf is so cute tho
Happy new year, the best way to start the year is a healthy dose of FISH TANK REVIEW 🐟❤️ (Fun Fact in highschool I earned the name FishWhisperer because I set up a bunch of fish tanks in my school) Also yah. Everything jumps, my pleco stinky jumped out of the tank the other day, I have had him for about three or so years now. He seemed to have somehow dislodged the lid, and destroyed his belly scales and fins. He has big open sores, I don’t know how long he was on the floor for, I found him under a blanket when I happened to decide to clean up my room. Now he is grumpy in a 20 gallon hospital tank. Hoping for a speedy recovery for that huge stinker.
Just got my new and first betta fish, Chris! She's a beautiful halfmoon. Already getting her to learn tricks like jumping out of the water for food! QOTW: One of the most interesting things about me has to be that an alligator tried to attack me when I was younger and was about an inch away from me with it's jaws opening when I saw and ran away. 🤧
Those tangs need a bigger tank for sure. Especially that Dory. Also OrbitKat doesn't seem to have otos as said in the video. Those are pygmy cories! I adore those little guys and have a small school of my own.
Maybe that first fish tank is for if you want to get those crazy shrimp (pistol shrimp)that can break glass by sending shockwaves as loud as a gunshot.
QOTW: Everything in my life is ghosts. I've always liked ghosts, a lot of my friends even call me Ghosty as a nickname. Where it gets weird is the number of things that should be unrelated that end up being actually ghost adjacent in the long run. My favorite animal? Ring-tailed lemur. The latin root of the word lemur means "ghost". Didn't know that til I was an adult, I've loved the little guys since I was like six years old. Several of my favorite flowers have ended up having ghost legends associated with them in their native ranges. Even my beautiful trans spouse is not immune. We just found out this week that the name they chose as their new middle name is also associated with ghosts/spirits. (Also yes, I do keep ghost shrimp why do you ask?)
QOTW: In 2 truths and a lie the lie I say is that I am a distant relative of King Charles. The 2 truths I usually say are 1) I once attended a pro-life rally where Mother Theresa was the keynote speaker, and 2) I once had dinner with a retired NHL goalie
Fun fact relevant to the channel. I have been bitten by a piranha and yet I still find it safe to swim in a river with piranhas. To be fair the bite was in self defense since I had it out of the water.
Happy FTR day and Happy New Year everyone! Wishing all a super productive, joyous and refreshing 2024!! May we all have many fishy adventures and spoil our pets like crazy! Edit; fun fact, in the Victorian era ladies would buy capsules of tapeworm to ingest as a "proven diet aid" 😅 QotW; I died as a 2 y/o. I drowned in my grandma's pool cause my mom was arguing on the phone and not watching me. My grandma's trusty yellow lab Topaz saved me and alerted my grandma who was elsewhere on her property, I had sunk to the bottom of the pool by then and she had to pump all the water out of my lungs while waiting for paramedics. I was in a coma for a month and the doctors thought I would be severely brain damaged, non verbal. I'm sure if this happened when I was older I wouldn't have made it, but young kids are just so resilient!✌️😉
Fun fact: Tapeworm eggs are still sold today in diet pills from dodgy online sites. They help you lose weight by stealing your nutrients, but people have died from the worms infecting their brain.
While commercial fishing in Alaska I’d see 7 to 12 bears a day and had to scare them out of my nets. I’ve almost been charged by a momma with cubs, and saw one bear that looked as big as a 90’s ford Taurus. Fun fact, many times you can smell them coming before you see them and they smell freaking terrible after hibernation!
QotW: Several years ago I learned how to spin and eat fire. At the time I was part of a small performance troupe trying to do it full time, now I do it just for fun or parties. It's always fun when you are doing work icebreakers to open up with "I theatrically eat and light myself on fire for fun" or to just generally say you play with fire for fun. Happy New year Everyone! Hope it was a good time!
I know next to nothing about saltwater tanks and even I know that it was over stocked and some of the fish (specifically the blue tang aka Dory fish) need a far bigger tank than that.
My go to fun fact about myself is that I was bit by a blue and gold macaw (type of parrot) at the parrot rescue I work at and he gave me nerve damage in my middle finger. His name was Rocco and I despise him to this day.
HAPPY NEW YEAR 🥳🥳🥳 Also question for anyone kind enough to give advice 🥹 I recently set up my first fish tank which is 10 gallons. I have 4-5 amano shrimp and 2 otocynclets. The shrimp and otos are thriving but i have 2 snails 🐌 that died when they ate, what i believe to be poop and waste at the bottom of the fish tank 😔 both snails were always fine on the walls of the tanks and surface but when they start eating the waste on the bottom they die and I don’t know how to prevent this 😞 if anyone could shed some light as to what I could do differently I would really appreciate it 😔
I have the tiny 3 in 1 filter - I use it for my endler and white cloud fry rearing tanks, and my daphnia rearing tank. with plants etc... and both are only about 7 litres
I don't own a saltwater tank but im saving up for one and researching but i do know that dory needs a big tank i don't know about the other fish but i think the yellow one has the same problem. Qotw: because of a doctor being stupid and not realizing i had strep throat i ended up laying in a hospital bed with scarlet fever for 9 days without eating any ACTUAL food. Usually i would just say "I've gone 9 days without eating " though.
QOTW: so my fun fact (this may piss people off due to present day stuffs but this is my experience) I met Ron Jeremy a few times, and when we reconnected at the Gathering of the Juggalos 2011 he was kind enough to let me utilize his trailer to go pee (I will not use porta potty) i had a bucket with bags, no shame in my game 😂. While thanking him for multiple washroom uses I was also trying to sell him some of my daughter's polymer clay charms and duck tape wallets or pens. I think he bought a wallet. Lmao the best was him noticing how in love w me my best friend was ans offered to marry us as he's an ordained minister 😂😂😂 I said he's my bestie, that's not happening. He never once was inappropriate to me. And who else has this story to tell? Probably not many. Good times.
Fun fact: Surprised my Dutch teacher by getting good grades at my VWO(Dutch A-levels) finals (making a comprehensive article excerpt and an essay) while all year my grades sucked because she didn't understand how I think and I didn't understand what she expected from me. But hey, that's often the life of neurodivergents. Besides, Dutch literature sucks because they still don't take fantasy and scifi seriously as legit genres! Btw, usually nearly every A-level candidate lands a failing grade on the comprehensive article excerpt but they usually compensate that with other grades.
I am discusting by temu fishtanks like people actually think fish are toys and decor like NO THEY LIVE AND BREATH AND AREN"T DECOR FOR OUR HOMES OR TOYS FOR OUR KIDS TO MESS UP AND ACCIDENTLY KILL DUE TO BAD CARE
hi everyone :) i was wondering if anyone knows if shrimp can get septicemia? my boyfriend & i did some research & decided to start our first 15 gal community tank, we got some live plants & floaters & 4 guppies & 4 tetras & 2 cherry shrimp & within two days everything but the shrimp were floating but still breathing :( water parameters were all perfect, i don’t think the tank was overstocked, tank had been running for 5 months with only two healthy feeder goldfish & it turns out one of the new fish they gave us had septicemia & it basically killed all of my fish besides one of the goldfish that i’m attempting to cure with kanaplex now :( the shrimp seem totally normal & i’m just wondering if they would carry the virus to any future new fish? (probably a month from now) i can’t find anything online abt shrimp being affected by septicemia. hoping someone has some insight :)
QOTW 🤔Fun fact about me? I worship the Lord through my hobby of growing plants (aquatic, tropical, succulent, ferns, trees, mosses, etc) Literally me when someone new is at my house: "Hallelujah for the color green! Check out this Sterilite tub of Pennywort it's flowering right now..." 😊 Edit: spelling 😅
I’m getting a Temu tank but it’s not a bowl, looks at least 2 gallons and is temporary (I’m using it to put my fish in during a water change) so not all tanks are awful from websites like Temu
Reefer here. Nice corals and fish but a Sailfin, dory, and a yellow tang is too much! Dory needs like a 5ft tank. Yellow tang can stay but dory and Sailfin need to go. 2.5/5 for fish but 4.5/5 Scape
They know this fishbowl is explosion proof because the Americans exploded Castle Bravo (look it up) on it. The Russians, not to be out done, developed and dropped Tsar Bomba (look it up) on it. That's how it got the little scratches on it. In both instances, the cockroach survived, so they took cockroach out, crushed it beneath their boot heal, and years later stuffed a poor hapless betta into it, and put it up for sale on... you know the rest. You don't look young enough to have fought in World War II old man. Quit fibbing to us or I will have to send you two bucks (do you want that Canadian, US, or Australian? Now that I think of it, Zimbabwe has dollars to. Would you like Zimbabwe dollars? Not sure what the exchange rate is. You might have to spend more to convert it to Canadian dollars two dollars Canadian face value. Guess that would kind of suck. Want to roll the dice and take Micronesian dollars instead? QOTW A: I speak two non-human languages fluently; Central Flyway Canada Goose and Central Flyway Mallard Duck. I don't mean duck calls and junk like that. I mean using my voice to carry on meaningful conversations with wild Canada Geese and Mallard ducks in the Central Flyway. Though there are some "words" in common and the structure is similar, there is enough difference between the flyways that they are not mutually intelligible. It took me decades of year round observation to finally figure out what was being said, and how to respond appropriately. Those birds a much more intelligent than almost anyone knows. Most of the difference between them and us is that they don't have an opposable thumb. Yes, they crap on the sidewalk and on your car, and they chase you if you unwittingly did something they took offense at. On the plus side, no goose has ever chosen to swim in your aquarium. They don't choose to swim in mine either. Even our biggest aquariums aren't big enough for them, and besides, there's no grass in your house for them to eat. No, they don't like that kind of grass, silly boy!
OKAY. I was looking for a heater awhile back and it said something like explosion proof! That did NOT give me confidence. Why does a tank heater say that 😭
Lol not Chris thinking "explosion-proof" meant it was promising to protect against grenades and not just stating they're elminating the possiblity of the tank exploding (usually the result of weak silicone seams, weak glass, uneven surfaces etc)
Qotw. I don't go outdoors on new years eve anymore bc for *many* years the times I did, I had to dodge cars. Too many close calls, and some were just ridiculous! Even inside isn't always safe. Couple times I had cars narrowly avoid making my sitting room a drive in. 2023 ended safely. I stayed in cars stayed out.
I wonder if the dinosaur egg could be used for transport? 🤔 But I would be afraid of what it’s made of 😭 (In fairness, Ihave Covid and my brain is leaking out of my ears, so my judgment may not be sound 😅)
QOTW: was hit by a truck at age 9 but wasn’t injured because all the books I was bringing home to do homework took the impact. The books did not survive 😂
Thing I use for icebreakers: Even though I am tiny female who always wears dresses getting a PhD in Theatre… I am an uber gamer with a Bloodborne tattoo. 😎
I got a question for daphnia if anybody has any information, firstly is a 1 gallon good for cultivating a small culture? I want to maintain a small culture of daphnia to live feed my betta fish, however I don’t want to 1 have them overpopulate my small tank, and 2 I don’t want them to survive and thrive in my betta tank because I don’t want too many of them in there, my betta tank is a 10 gallon. How can I keep their population under control?
Those ones with "wooden support base" would be fantastic terrariums. Terrible fish tanks though. The filter with the thousands of reviews and nearly five stars makes me want a highly rated stupidly cheap fish product review video.
QOTW: my fun fact is that I will take any opportunity, no matter how forced, to quote the part of Moana where Tamatoa says, “Oh I see, she covered a rock in bioluminescence algae, as a diversion,” and if you are one of my people, you read it in the exact tones of voice ;p
the only thing the break proof explosion proof dinosaur egg seems maybe good for is transporting fish? maybe? if its that spillproof and everything, itll probably survive me disobeying the laws of the road because free bird came up on the radio and its the guitar solo and my high rollover risk honda winds up overturned in a ditch. and then explodes. itd be good to know my fish would be okay :)
I have 3 of those lil filters i got them off of amazon for less. I have 1 in my 2.5 gallon planted shrimp bowl and 1 in each of my 1 gallon sea monkey bowls
HI fellow fish fans, does anyone have a fav company/website that you buy fish from in Canada? I am having issues finding the species I want for my tank in my city.
There was the one time, I did a wall and body painting with my poo. I was 7months and managed to get out of pampers while I was doing midday sleeping alone in the child's room. Idk how much this can say about me but it's hilarious
The explosive I guess beta tank I’m wondering cause I love to take ““ beta bowls, and tournament to towers I wonder how that one would look at a tower it’s close proof, so I guess if my house ever blows up in my beta goes into the tower and the rest of the tank it explodes and it flies and manages to tip upright catch water catch my beta thenall is well. I really have no idea what I’m talking about but I love to take beta bowls and tour them in the towers.
