How a band that has influenced so many other bands that are now in the hall of fame and they’re not in is a fucking disgrace. I absolutely love these guys and they are one of the most underrated, genre busting, talented, influential bands of all time! Fucking phenomenal!
So much of their material is so fundamental. RHCP wouldn't be a thing without them. They're foundational! Saw them live on Shrooms in 2023 in PDX and they blew my mind in unspeakable ways. All I can say is I hope to see them live again soon. They're fundamental to Funk/Ska/Punk and Rock, it's shocking they haven't gotten bigger! I found out about them via Los Mal Hablados, a Skacore band in PDX. And they truly enlightened a lot to my music standards. Now I can't live without Fishbone because of them lol
You are correct. They should’ve been huge. At the time the label had the opportunity to back and promote a highly talented all Black California Rock band. Or, an up and coming all White California Funk/Rock band. They went with the all White band, better known as The Red Hot Chili Peppers.
I'm a 39 year old black man that have never heard of this band. Bored at home last week I watched a documentary about the band and was blew away at how long they have been around. I really like this song and now somewhat a fan of their music.
Marcus Heath Also check out a band called Living Colour & another called The Family Stand, both Black Rock. There's a lot of Living Colour on You Tube, old & new. They're still together & touring and better than ever.
Marcus Heath Also, there was a band called Follow For Now, also the name of their only album. You can find it on Amazon for under a buck. The same energy as Fishbone. Also google Black Rock Coalition
still gives me goosebumps after all these years... Those harmonies, Norwood's bass playing, Angelo's singing, the heaviness of the guitars, it all blends so niceely and still sounds so fresh today
You’ll be happy to know they ended the show in Portland tonight with this song. My fist was in the air the whole time and I was crying like a baby. I can relate.
Greatest bands ever saw them at the Hollywood palladium in the 90s and Angelo crowd surfed across the floor then climbed up the balcony and jumped back on the crowd and surfed back to the stage awesome performance
I just saw them play in Santa Cruz w/ Les Claypool and the Frog Brigade. They still have all the urgency and energy that they’ve always had! Angelo Moore was handing out setlists and I finally got to geek out on playing Theremin, showed him my Theremin/pedalboard and it turns out we both played the Moog Etherwave Plus Theremin. So much positivity and sincerity from him. 😊
This band was a huge huge HUGE influence on me, as a young black kid who loved hard rock, this was the first band that rocked out good where the members looked like me. back then the only black people you saw in rock music was the occasional drummer or bassist with a white singer and guitarist up front getting all the love.
TheMortalez Yep I used to hear this song all the time on Z-Rock and I loved it, it was months before I knew they were black and after finding out i was even more impressed, it could not have been easy for them to get that much radio play back then, but they were just that fucking good. Sadly I think if they were white or of the vin diesel/jennifer beals variety of black they would have been even more popular. but times are changing thankfully and those things dont matter as much, as evidence by the last time I saw this band in 2009 and the crowd was a bunch of white kids who would have been babies when this video was made.
When I was a kid after the fall of the iron curtain one of my positive first impressions about The West of the west was Fishbones videos on MTV. I didn't understand the lyrics just loved the vibe of the music. I still really like them.
Yeah, this song is SICK and Fishbone shoulda been HUGE in 1991 but keep in mind RHCP was an underground band back then. And so were Soundgarden, Nirvana... the list goes on and on. Only us "freaks" listened to these groups in an era when Warrant, Whitesnake, and Poison were still chart toppers. But all that stopped in October of that year. By June of 1992 everybody was singing ""Give It Away," spandex was dead, and Chris Cornell was a household name but Fishbone never got the recognition they deserved.
This song from the reality of my surroundings album is awesome. I have to say it’s a shame that Fishbone never really got the attention they deserve from the masses. My favorite album from Fishbone is Truth and Soul is an extraordinary piece of work I can’t think of anything like it an absolute classic in my opinion.
I travelled to New York last year to see George Clinton & P-Funk in Port Chester, and Fishbone supported them. I never heard or seen them at all prior to the show. But when watching them, I was astonished beyond belief! They were so incredible, and I've been a fan ever since! I hope they come back to Australia so I could see them one last time. I also regret not getting a photo with Angelo upon talking to him, because the man's got a heart of gold and is so nice to talk to!
One of the best shows i saw with these guys was in BC Canada. Customs refused one of their horn players into canada. So they got word out and a young clean cut white guy stood in for the show. It was an amazing show and the guy did a fantastic job with literally last minute notice. He didnt miss a beat and Fishbone welcomed him like their own. Truly class these guys are !
Show in Edmonton in 93 ... my friends and I were right at the side of the stage where they kept gear cases and stuff. Norwood was walking by to take the stage and sees me smoking a cig. Bums one, goes onstage and starts killing it. A couple songs in he sparks up a spliff, smokes half and tosses me the rest. All while wearing nothing but a towel that's about to fall off. Good times.
This album was one of those "headphone albums" for me. Plug in, tune everything else out and let this one soak in. Man, they were at the peak of their powers here! Such a great point in time for music. Living Colour, 24-7 Spyz, Follow for Now and the mighty Fishbone. What great memories.
@@grampagamingguy6833 GAHHH! Curse you for being right yet again. Speaking of Body Count, i just recently watched a video of them doing a cover of Raining Blood by Slayer! It was a beautiful thing to behold.
In the words of the late and great lemmy from motorhead tell them to shove it. I can't stand that shit why should race determine what should or shouldn't be liked by someone?
I remember when this hit in the early 90s,,,,,,,,This is neutron bomb musicianship, absolutely zero quarter given. First time I heard this, I went looking for their other material and found out that FB are a whole lot more than this....Brilliant song, Shows all those 'metal' pretenders of the era how its done...and with an undiluted message to boot. ...Badass, Brilliant, uncompromising...what else you want???
Hands down the best show I ever saw was Fishbone at First Avenue in Minneapolis. Think it was like 1993. The band (especially Angelo) were absolutely at full throttle giving 150% for a good 90 minutes. It was crazy the way they commanded the audience. The pit went from pure chaos to actual dancing just by playing the next song. Then back to pure chaos. There has never been anyone that can touch their live show.
That's right on the button. I saw them at The Santa Monica Civic Center back in 87. They were totally awesome. Like 2 hrs of punk rock reggae sounds mixed with funk n soul. Rock on brothers and sisters.
I wholeheartedly agree. I saw them in a small venue in Australia in the early 90s. I’ve seen a LOT of live music & these guys were full tilt talent & huge energy. I’ll never forget & this track is a favourite of mine. I was lucky to see Living Colour at another small venue too. Blessed to have those memories. ❤
Classic , and highly underated . These guys were seriously skilled and tight musicians , they had a positive message and intense energy. Even now what ever projects they are working on i wish these musicians the best and thx for years of great work.
Never heard of these guys, but went on my Spotify discover weekly and this song came up. It became my 2nd most listened to song of 2021. Still bumping this. Such a masterpiece
I originally got into Fishbone because of their ska roots... but this has to be my fave of their songs without a trace of that ska sound.. damn this shit slaps HARD!
Lifelong Fishbone fan here and while I’m nervous about the upcoming changes to the band, I’m optimistic Fishbone will continue to deliver amazing music and amazing live shows.
My older brothers used to listen to this group, they had a VHS tape with a lot of their music videos.. when I was a little girl this video used to scare me because of the children in cages lol but I always liked the song.
Fishbone - Sunless Saturday I see the pestilence outside my window I see the dung heaps piled at least a mile high I see the shards of shattered dreams in the street I face the morning with my customary sigh Whoa-oh-oh! Whoa-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh! I hear the sounds of children laughing aloud A stumbling wino has attracted quite a crowd My breakfast finished now I brave the outside But clouds have hidden all the warmth inside Chase these clouds away I hate this sunless Saturday Chase these clouds away I hate this sunless Saturday Freedom come (Freedom come) For us now . (For us now) Light our sky (Light our sky) Burn away These clouds Yeah! Perhaps the charcoal grey and brown around me Is just the mirror image of tainted soul I think the sun will never visit my sky Until the truth is seen by each and every eye Whoa-oh-oh! Whoa-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh! Chase these clouds away I hate this sunless Saturday Freedom come (Freedom come) For us now . (For us now) Light our sky (Light our sky) Burn away These clouds I see the helpless and I see the insane I see a pauper singing in the pouring rain I see the means of help elude us again I think the sun will never visit me again Whoa-oh-oh! Whoa-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh! Chase these clouds away I hate this sunless Saturday Saturday! Saturday! Saturday! Sunless Saturday! Oh-yeah-haa-yeah! Saturday! Saturday! Sunless Saturday! Sunless Saturday! Oh-yeah-haa-yeah!

Fishbone was always a head of their time! So happy I got to see them a few times in their prime.... Their energy was amazing! Now sharing them with my son who is my age when I seen them.
See these fncking awesome dudes about 4 times. Smoked out with them after one of their shows. Angelo was freestyling his poetry out front in a tent before their set at Lollapalooza. Unknown by soooooo many. Sad.
I grew up with this song, this song helped me in rough times. Im 16 now and i know this song all of my life because of my dad. Im very thankful he let me listen to this music!
I JUST saw Fishbone live at a club in detroit. Yes they're still at it, but I think this may be their farewell tour. They haven't lost it one bit, it was the rockingest craziest show I've ever been to-they opened with this song, and just exploded.
But every time a good black guitar rock band comes along someone has to mention something about "color". So that alone makes their race a thing to you. I can't imagine you making that comment about color on a Tom Petty video or a Pearl Jam video.
This song is not political; it's not racial. The reason this song is great is that it's about depression, plain and simple. We can be depressed for different reasons, but it's part of the universal human condition. *Liked*
Well you made it racial, because i don't see comments on Aerosmith or Nirvana's video having to state: "This song is not racial or political". You just made a "thing" about a black band making a song that isn't about race or politics. But you know they have plenty of songs about those subjects.
Only difference is that Rush was a trio (RIP Neil Peart, even over a month later I can't believe he's gone), and Fishbone are a sextet. Kendall used added some Van Halen with his majestic solo complete with double-tapping on the neck from 1:43-2:14
Absolutely one of my favorite songs of all time. Stoked to get the album when it came out. Some really cool tracks it blew me away when the final track hit my ears. Still gives me chills. It picks you up and moves you. What an amazing work of art.
They were SO blazing a trail in this wonderful, powerful and mysterious direction. Either nobody could or would follow them. Damn! Music would have been so much better TODAY if they had. What a missed opportunity for all of us because nobody else had the guts. Very popular with white kids and all but unknown to black kids which is a switch because customarily it is black kids who are in the vanguard. I liked Prince and really liked Living Color but I LOVED Fishbone.
