Homestead Mike and Country Craig are back at it again! This time we are installing a Fisher Papa Bear wood burner in my lower barn. The Papa Bear is much more efficient than the Grandpa Bear. The 6" stove pipe allows for better control of the temperature. Since the burner weighs approx 480lbs we used a fishing pole as a plumb bob to zero in and connect the pipes.

Damn good idea of using fishing rod as a plumb Bob.

Some of the older Fisher stoves have a flue collar that is actually 6" outside diameter. As it is recommended to run the male end of the connector pipe inside the stove's flue collar, this sizing makes it difficult to do so. Our Fisher stove adapter is sized to go over the flue collar. Then the male end of the connector pipe fits inside of this adapter, allowing for a drip free connection. In addition, it has a formed bead to further insure that the creosote formed from combustion remains inside the pipe.

Is using this adapter recommended by Fisher? I've got a mama bear and have the same issue and was worried about creosote leakage around adapter. Would love to know if this is working well for you because it would be a lot cheaper than having a elbow custom made in the shop. Thanks!

Those flue dampers are a pain in the ass! It's like one of those steel ring puzzles from cracker barrel.

@@homesteadmike1120 I was talking about the install. Trying to thread a crooked pin through the cast iron damper while it's inside the pipe. Pain in the ass! I just put an old napoleon stove in my little tarped shack and had to go through that myself.

@@homesteadmike1120 Where are you homesteading at? I'm doing the off grid deal myself. Threw together a tarped shack, put in a wood stove, been hunting my meat, etc. Falling some 12-18in diameter pines and peeling bark now. Hoping to have my cabin under roof by March 2021.

You don't need the damper on this stove. Also, all pipes should be installed inside each other, top to bottom. Otherwise you'll have smelly creosote running down the outside. This identical stove was our sole source of heat for seven years in a remote cabin in NW Ontario, Canada.

Your stove is missing the “Fire Brick” inside the box. You should consider getting the brick it will make your heat feel more comfortable & make the stove last a lifetime if you don’t burn directly on the metal inside the box.

It was hard to tell in the video but there were firebrick in it. They were all in good shape. No cracks.

How thick is the steel on these stoves, and how much would you guess it weighs? Also, what size is the flu pipe? I'm getting ready to install a stainless steel chimney and really want a Fisher stove, but dont see this information on youtube anywhere. Looks like a great stove.

5/16 heavy duty steel Approx. 300 w/o bricks I'm using a 6" with a damper. It will be more efficient with a smaller diameter pipe.

@@homesteadmike1120 i realize these comments are two years old, but i agree. you really need a damper. it's kinda scary to not install one. we used a fisher mamma bear stove for maybe 5 years before we moved away. oh, i was so grateful for that thing. i laughed in the face of week long power outages. and that's the truth. but no damper? oh, lordy. not only for efficiency, but safety. with wood burning there is no such thing as having too much control. BTW, loved the video.
