Late friend of mine was commanding officer coast guard station fort myers beach. He said always carry orange inflatable swimming pool rafts on your boat. It keeps you dry and the coast guard is looking for orange. So glad those men made it back safe. US Coast Guard rocks!
We had three fisherman go through the same incident a week ago, their boat went down off the coast of Gisborne NZ. Unfortunately they were not so lucky. After a 40 hour battle of treading water in rough, stormy seas they all lost their lives. Three, young dads who were beloved members of their community. It has been a devastating loss their families, the whole town is in mourning. I think having a personal locator on board might have saved their lives. This is a great story and lesson for recreational fisher people around the world. Doing safety checks and rehearsals with everyone on board should be mandatory. Be prepared and have the correct safety gear at all times. Glad you all survived! Thank you for sharing.
@@Starfish2145 they were wearing lifejackets. They got caught in a cyclone, it was too rough for the rescuers to go out. If they had a locator beacon on board they might have been found quicker and before the storm set in. I think locator beacons could be sewn into a life jacket.
@@Tennessee6447 because a container ship spotted them treading water 30 hours after they were reported missing. The ship couldn't reach them the seas were too rough so they threw them a life a raft in the hope they could reach it. No one saw them alive again after that. They were found washed ashore the next morning.
Anybody who goes out fishing, hiking, driving in isolated places, or like i do ride my WR450F dirtbike by myself way out in the Oz🇦🇺 outback in Western Queensland & Northern Territory i ALWAYS 💯 carry my GME Epirb & they only cost $350. I reckon you’d have to be crazy not to have one.
Good for these guys that they didn't just let this end with the happy ending. People don't take their safety seriously especially while outside doing things they've done a long time.
ayooo me tooo!!!! Not even the thought of drowning whatsoever....just sharks attacking nibbling on my legs first all throughout my body lol sorry for the details but damnnn....this is an amazing story
@@jenniebjestp wow. Well I guess they do get the credits too. 🥰 It was the wife of one of the men on board that gave them her personal locator and told them to use it if they were to get into any trouble.
I think part of what saved them was being calm and thinking things through. Nobody freaked out, and they did most of what they needed to do, especially when they were in the water. Glad they were found rather quickly!
I was in a boat that someone forgot to put the plug in and almost ended up sunk in the middle of a Florida swamp during alligator mating season at 4am 😬 So my experience was a lot like they described “everything was fine, until it wasn’t” the boat I was on was ok until we slowed down & I noticed the water seemed higher up on the side of the boat and the engine was really low in the water, no water inside the boat that we could see but when I knew something wasn’t right and opened the compartment/live well thing & it was filled to the brim. Luckily in my case we kicked it into high gear, got the boat back up on plane, got the bilge pump on got back to the boat ramp in time but it was pretty scary. Especially seeing all those glowing eyes shining everywhere and the GRRP GRRP noises. Women tent to worry a lot but sometimes that intuition comes in handy, so glade that dudes gf sent him out with a plb- every boat going off shore should have at least one on board.
You don't get the guys who "failed" the pre inspection of their boat and its seaworthy-ness to conduct a safety talk😂😂😂😂yes they didn't panic, they relied on their coolers, they were very fortunate, but they aren't exactly safety experts, get the coast guard to give the safety talk😂😂😂😂😂
Loved one was thinking about them at just the right moment. The mom may not have answered the Coast Guard call. I'm very glad that the fishermen survived. A+ Coast Guard! And A+ to the captain for the safety review the night before.
This is an amazing story. The Lord was watching over yall that day and what a wonderful testimony this is. Thank yall for sharing and keep on fishing. God bless yall.
I have owned boats and I have always been involved in maintenance because I take it very seriously. Not everyone has the personality to keep their boat safe and the same is true for a private plane. For sinking as fast as they say, the first probable cause is that one of the Through Hulls has broken, leaving a minimum 2.5” hole open in the hull. That happens or due to age, corrosion. excessive twisting of the hose or that it has been overtightened. In radical cases, it may be that a battery has come loose and hit one or more Through Hulls. If it was the through hull of the raw water intake that was broken, the flow of water entering is about 650 gal per min. It is clear that they had been making water for a few minutes without noticing it. They were planning at speed plus the evident lack of experience. They would have noticed it if they had an audible alarm indicating that the bilge pump was active expelling water Another possible cause is transom breakage due to structural failure, this being the least likely and they would have noticed it. If they had collided with some floating object, they would have felt the impact without a doubt. The maintenance of a boat for offshore use should be regulated and subject to certification because in addition to risking the lives of the crew, it also puts the rescue team at risk. Hope this makes sense & help and glad everyone is ok
They would NOT have had that beacon If it wasn't for The girlfriend "of one of the fishermen" 9:46. This is a cautionary tale to trust women's intuition, and one should always listen to that inner voice. I'm just glad they're all safe👍👍👍
One time, me and my friends jumped into the water while the boat swang around to come back for us. Guys, that boat and everything around us disappeared in seconds. You couldn't tell if you were a mile offshore or in the middle of the Atlantic. Everything disappears behind the just 2 ft waves in the ocean! Luckily the boat did find us when it came back.
@@Canadian_offroad_Adventures We forgot our Jet Ski plug once… or twice. I know there’s a difference between jet ski and boat but we didn’t realize the plug wasn’t in until we realized the jet ski was riding too low and we had a puddle at our feet after about 1-2 hours. I’d imagine in 3-5 ft waves it would be hard to notice if the boat was riding low or if it was just waves.
This isn't a drain plug issue, this is a thru hull exhaust seal failure most likely. Not much else other than that or a hull fracture makes a boat sink that fast.
Do you really think experienced open sea fishermen & captain who were safety conscious enough to revere safety review would be cavalier about the boat operation itself?
Good call if the plug was forgotten the boat would have taken in water as they were heading out the channel and would have started to fill the haul which would not have been visible to them just yet but then as they would have accelerated to their fishing designation the water would have emptied out mostly because of the pitch of the boat upright and the speed of the boat would drain it. But then lo and behold once they started fishing it began to fill up again and by the time they realized it was obviously too late.
@@spinflux You want to compare distracted parents going somewhere without checking vehicle readiness or special safety equipment with dedicated fishermen going out into a dangerous environment? Do you think they didn't notice a change in the boat's handling until the last 45 seconds?
Let's not forget, if it wasn't for the girlfriend of one of the fishermen, they would have never had that beacon. Talk about trusting women's intuition and listening to that inner voice. Glad they're all safe!
Did the guy on the left say the life vests stopped working? "the life jackets were great, but they only lasted for so long" Who sells life jackets that stop working?
Hope a lot of people sees this a take all their information in. Use their experience to save your own lives. ❤I will remember this video whenever I am out in any body of water.
This happened to my cousin a bit over 30 years ago. He was a missionary and had just returned home from, I believe Haiti. He went on a fishing trip with his buddies about 30 miles out into the ocean, they're boat capsized and they also were able to use the coolers to help them float. Their were 4 of them, they tied their life jackets they wore to the cooler. One of the men would swim around the cooler checking on the other three, one of his swims around he discovered my cousins life jacket attached to the cooler my my cousin had slipped away into the sea, he was never found. The other two men eventually passed away but were still in their life jackets. The one last person who made the rounds around the cooler crawled inside the cooler and prayed. He was found in poor condition but alive and recounted what happened. I can't imagine the fear to this day.
Excellent advice from these men on the fact that they would have never known and the location of the beacon and lifejackets all accessible- not needing to be “dug out”- there’s a very important point
What a great story. I'm happy it ended like it did because it could've ended totally different. We hear of so much tragedy in this world it's good to hear something inspiring. Lord gave them a second chance they know it.
This would be officially my last fishing trip ever 😂. Glad you made it fellas….smart to prepare for the worst the night before. Really smart to keep the debris together and standing up that cooler. The wife making them take the EPRB too. Thanks to the USCG too!
If there's a will, there is a way. They did not panic and give up, and they nade it through boat sinking, unknown marine life, at the mercy of waters. They kept pushing and they made it. Be these men everyday. Push through it with faith and come out of it on the other side with a testimony.
The team prepared for a tournament never visualizing the unseen torment. Great instincts and teamwork to the captain and crew who live to fish another day.
They were able to collect all life saving items . Lucky !!! Man I can only imagine being asking I already know I would've went insane I'm the mental omg I hope and pray I not anybody else goes thru this scary situation
Only because they had the ACR emergency beacon device that sent the signal to the Coast Guard, otherwise they wouldn't have been reported missing until the next day and been in the water all night. The call to the relative just confirmed to the CG that they had gone out on the water.
Lucky they were smart enough the spend $250 bucks on an emergency beacon and wore life jackets.. $250 isnt much when people spend 25k on a a small boat
@@mifo2000 They would NOT have had that beacon If it wasn't for The girlfriend "of one of the fishermen" @9:46. And "She had a feeling And she got that feeling for some reason". “SATELLITE PHONES” I can’t tell you how much these devices save people in situations like this , you can use the SAT PHONES to call the Coast Guard Dispatch Station near you
I have seen alot go wrong, plugs failing, transom cracking, water getting in the boat silently until you realize the situation is critical. This is one of the good stories, minus the vessel, everyone made it out with no injury or worse, emergency beacon is the best chance you have, glad you all made it home safely, happy 4th.
Every fisherman’s worst nightmare, thank God they were smart enough to use the resources around them and survived… oh my friends make fun of me because I always call my mother and tell her where I’m going fishing what time I’m leaving and estimated time I should be home and if I’m not home and don’t answer my phone by that time send somebody to look for me and it’s for this reason right here cause you never know what’s gonna happen always have a boating plan. Make sure if you’re out on the water. Somebody knows where you’re at and if you don’t answer your phone worst case scenario send help, if you’re right, thank God if you’re not floating on coolers glad to see you guys made it out….
Life jackets and the emergency gps beacon in one of the guys hands is what saved them. They kept the coolers close by because they had fresh water and snacks which they didnt need because they had the $250 gps
It’s terrifying. I was on a boat that capsized. It started taking on water because the bilge pump failed. I can’t swim so it made it extra scary. My boyfriend just finished putting on my life jacket when a huge gush of water came over our heads and knocked me into the passenger seat and the boat flipped over. We were under the boat and somehow my bf found my legs and pushed me up. The bottom of the boat was now the roof and the others with us pulled me up and we sat on top and I almost got knocked off by a huge wave more than once. We were freezing. He was able to contact the Coast Guard to give them our coordinates before total disaster struck. They never showed up and there were no other boats in sight. We were out there for what felt like an eternity until out of nowhere another boat appeared and rescued us. Those two guys saved all of our lives. They took us to the closest Coast Guard station. I was in shock and suffered a bad concussion but luckily that was all. I really thought I was going to die. My Angels were watching over me that day.
My wife and I went one vacation and I brought life vests for my kids, because we were going to go on a site seeing tour on a boat. I brought the vest because I knew they fit my kids and have whistle and lights attached to them. This way I knew they were safe/safer if something happened. The tour guy thought that was awesome and wished more people did that.
Thank you to the guys that survived and can tell there story now I know not to keep ur survival stuff in so many different places and always lock ur cooler lids so if this does happen they got air trapped in them
There most likely were a few in the area, attracted to the splashing, yelling, and commotion - they just didn't see them. Good thing they didn't have diving masks to look around them & down below.
What an amazing story! Love this and God's hand in their rescue. Intelligent men and precious souls. Counting your blessings until you made it. That's faithfulness.❤
Your ability to survive hypothermia is highly dependent on whether you have a life jacket or not. Without a lifejacket, your nervous and muscular system shutdown in just 10 minutes. People will drown hours before hypothermia actually kills them! With a lifejacket you can survive for 2-3 hours conscious and even unconscious a little after that depending on the water temp. Giving you the biggest chance to be found and saved!
Mindset goes a huge way towards survival. These guys had the mindset that makes survival a lot easier. Fortunately they were found quickly but I get the impression that if they were out there for longer, they would have been just fine.
This advice will help save lives, if people thought it could happen to them, and it can. Better safe than sorry. I’m happy this ended the way it did, because it could have went horribly wrong. Thank God, that you ALL made it back to safety.
Is it just me or the answers they’re providing doesn’t have even just a minor details on how it happened . I wonder it’s part of possible insurance claim . I’m glad they made it out alive but just wondering what could’ve caused such incident.
