Fishing a container (loaded with a classic Mustang) out of a house

This job came in on June 9, 2020, from a customer that wanted to ship this container overseas. Her broker could not find anyone to take the job, so she took it upon herself to find a company that could and found us. I gave our lead rotator operator Dave dibs on this job, so I brought the Landoll while he took Big Flipper, our 75ton rotator.
As stated in the video, the container was loaded in two parts. In the back half there was miscellaneous property, with a classic Ford Mustang in the front half. Total weight of the container plus the load was 24,800lbs. This meant we had to be extra careful when pulling this out of the driveway, as we did not want to destroy the home owner's property, lawn or the sidewalk.
To do this we used low profile container skates, then used wood to compensate for the slope on the driveway. Once out into the street, Dave swung the container parallel to the curb, then lifted it into the air so I can backup underneath and secure it to the Landoll.
If you liked the video, subscribe to see more in the future and follow us on Instagram and Facebook to see our daily recoveries and more pictures of The Hulk and our 75ton rotator, Big Flipper, where I post content regularly.
We also have a new merch store on the website where you can get Pepe's gear like hats, beanies, shirts and hoodies!

Here we have The Big Flipper...known all over the LA area to upright anything in it's path but today it was asked to drag and deadlift a container, under the careful operation of her handler Dave...she did her duties all without causing any real damage to the pavement the container was on. Solid teamwork from the boss and Dave an amazing catch and load procedure that went off without much issue, sure there were some tough spots but the day was won when The Big Flipper landed that container safely atop the Landoll trailer. Another quality job done by Pepe's! Side note though, those container skates...you said for such a small investment how good they worked...sometimes the best tool isn't the flashiest but the most useful.

Bro, I am in no way trying to tell you how to do your job. You have always demonstrated mastery in this profession. I was in the U S Navy for a time and worked in deck division. We were trained to work with winches, lines, lifts and all manner of rigging. It was ingrained in us never to get between a load and a fixed object. We could get our a..es chewed out for doing that. I got nervous every time I saw you walk down the side of that container next to the fence. I realize this was a different situation, I just enjoy your vids and feel a concern for you and your crew. I could not stop my stomach from flipping every time I saw you go there.

Good job getting the sea can out without damaging the driveway, fence or landscaping. The limited space and overhead lines always do provide challenges, but nothing a skilled guy on the remote can't overcome. I didn't like those light duty straps on the Mustang either, not sure I'd want that going on a ship across the Atlantic and bouncing around if it was my car, they should re-secure that with stronger straps, the ones they've got on there look like motorcycle straps. But, that's not your problem, they wanted the sea can out, and it's out and gone. Good job!!

With those container skids (I am assuming they are made of plastic and/or wood) you could use a Forster bit to drill some pockets in them and glue in some strong disk magnets. That way you could attach them to the container without having to hold them in place as it is lowered down. They would also stay in place as you lift to reposition.

Mr. Pepe, Just a thought but if you had some twist locks like waterfront cranes and the port packer machines use to lift loaded cargo containers from the top with a little fabrication installing an eyelet and some stop lock to the end of the twist lock, things would be much easier to lift, flip, slide any container (of which there are many types). ALL containers must have corner pockets in which to lift. I believe it will save you time and the bringing out so much gear. With the modified t/l you can go directly to them with your hooks be ready to maneuver in ten seconds, be safe and still get the job done...good luck nice videos
@PepesTowingService
@PepesTowingService 4 года назад
Thank you for the suggestion, may I ask if you are new to my channel or if you've seen my other rollover videos? For containers, I always use B/A container links, they are highly regarded as one of the best tools for lifting and recovering containers, I swear by them. On a job like this, it would be much more difficult to rig to the top holes, hence why I used 5/8" chain in the bottom pockets. It takes literally seconds to run a chain through the bottom hole and connect it back to itself, then connect a grab link to that which goes on my snatch block.

@silentepsilon888
@silentepsilon888 4 года назад
the only problem I see with dollies or wheels is controlling the container speed once it is in motion. Wheeled dollies would need some sort of a braking system to slow down a container or it might just take off going down a hill. Imagine having a weight of 12 or more tons in motion, that is very hard to stop on tiny wheels. The skates Pepe's used provide natural friction resistance that prevents the container from getting away, unless it's on a really steep hill and they spilled a load of grease or soap ;)

@@silentepsilon888 We used to load 17 ton (34 000lbs) carpet tufting machines into 30ft containers using skates on the machine and braked it using the works van with a turfer (pullalong) winch attached. The road was an inclined plane of about 5-7 degrees. As long as you worked slowly and carefully everything went great. We did this process about every 8-10 weeks, so became quite skilled at it. Being an engineering company it was no problem to design, build and utilise steerable caterpillar skates with a load capacity of 20ton each. On level planes, one man could easily move machinery along.

I have not for a few reasons. One, we usually use both top pockets with container links when working with containers, especially rolled over. They are so secure and trusted, I wouldn't use anything else. For odd jobs like these where I'm doing a bit of pulling, the chain and foundry hooks work fine. If I were to come across a set of those lifting lugs I'll give em a shot, but I won't go out of my way to get them.

Who in his right mind puts a large Container in his driveway? Especially in such a beautiful house... BTW. Wasn't it easier to pull the car out of the container and then load the car back in once the container is on the street?

Someone moving overseas. They got the container, and filled it with the stuff they wanted to move.

Should have backed landoll in drive and winch it on.

It wasn't a straight shot, and there are cars on the other side of the street. You COULD back it in with a skilled driver but not without running over the grass and destroying it. Plus, winching up a 25,000lb container would destroy the concrete, this has been addressed.

Do you think that they delivered it to the house with a landoll?

Dropped it off with a landoll should have picked it up the same way. Lots of work that did not need to be done! But you have to pay for that rig some how.

Why didn’t you guys pick it up with the land doll truck it would’ve been so much easier and cheaper for the customer

I'm curious why you didn't back the trailer in and pull out. I've pickup up and dropped off those shipping cans in some tight areas.

There is a house directly across the street, it would be possible but not without climbing over the curb and grass. Then what? Attach a 3/8" chain to it and winch up a 25,000lb loaded container, destroying her side walk? Plus did you see the wire directly over the container? Doing it your way would absolutely hit that once you level the bed. I told the lady I could do it with zero damage to her driveway and I did.

Why in the world did they put that container in the driveway, should have just. dropped it in the street. Also why a 40' box? Did they have 2 cars in it? Good job guys. You do get some strange jobs.

Who knows? The container was there for a long time, it's LA county you can't just leave a container in the street. The 2nd partition had a car, the first half had a bunch of unknown stuff in it.

If you lift one from the top with more weight in it than a mustang you'll figure out why we lift from the bottom haha itll crush the shit out of the container
