The three different fish called "sheepshead" are distinct and unrelated species. The California Sheephead is a fish related to parrotfish and similar species. When mature, the males have a red head and black body. Young fish -- all young one are female -- are red/pink. The sheepshead of the Great Lakes is a freshwater drum. It is gray/silver and shaped much like a black drum.

Another great show, thank you. If I could make a suggestion, several years ago I learned that if you salt and season your fillets and let them sit for 20 minutes it makes the meat firmer. It also lets the herbs hydrate and let out more flavor. It doesn't matter so much with a nice firm fish like sheepshead or snapper but it really improves the texture of softer fish like trout or any fish that's been frozen.

Yes they have sheepshead in the great lakes. I grew up on Erie, they taste like carp but r fun to catch.

Pacific sheepshead is in the wrasse family and unrelated to what you are currently catching which is in the porgy family. Tight lines!

In the great lakes we call the freshwater drum a sheephead (singular sheep, no 2nd s). They are not very good table fare, however. Especially when you consider that we're catching a lot of walleye and yellow perch. They are an absolute blast to catch but unfortunately they have a pretty poor survival rate if people don't take time to revive them when they're released, which most people don't.

What they call sheepshead in freshwater is what a lot of folks refer to as the drum. It looks like the black drum as far as body shape everything except the stripes when young. A lotta people say they’re not good to eat but we’ve eaten them and we keep ‘em all from about 12 inches and up to about 4 or 5 pounds. There’s not much difference between them and crappies as many people have figured out when I fed em freshwater drum.

What rod and reel combo do you suggest for surf fishing?

9ft surf rod and a 5000 size spinning reel. Star Stellar Lite Surf Rod 9ft and a Daiwa BG4000 is great for pompano. You can go to a 5000 or 6000 for larger species . 20-30 lb braid

They are pretty small. About the size of the last joint of your thumb. You don’t want big bait for sheepshead.
