Can I catch the BIG and very rare fish that lives in this private farm stream? I take on some extremely cold weather fishing way out of my comfort zone, hopefully it pays off. I love fishing places like this because you really never know what's going to happen... when i first saw this fish it blew my mind. I know this river has great grayling fishing too, so we will be doing some feeder fishing and some float fishing to see what we can catch.
As always, thank you very much for watching. If you enjoyed the video please consider hitting that subscribe button, I really appreciate it! Drop a like too if you can, and leave a comment. I'd love to hear what you think, and any advice would be massively appreciated too!

Because of your lovely videos I have p[purchased some fresh water gear. Have tried the river Croal(i have moved to Bolton, ex Fylde coast) and the Liverpool Leeds canal. So far nothing but it is winter. Your enthusiasm plus your caring and admiration the the environment keeps up my new hobby. I am sure with your continued videos and my love for the country side that one day I will succeed. Just being in the environment in such an industrial area gives me such pleasure and hope. Keep up your great work, regards Nick.

No then buddy. Cracking video and hope you and the family are all okay. Love seeing them grayling … they are beautiful, looking Fish and fight like Demons. Can’t believe you tried to catch an eel.😳😳😳😳 that is one Fish. I do not like catching. I’ve called hundreds of them in the past and my dad is something of an eel whisperer.. He catches them from all sorts of places and just like me. It is his least favourite fish. They are a strange looking creature though. Most of the time when I have caught them by mistake, I’ve never caught them in the winter time. Always in the summer or autumn. Usually luncheon meat or any sort of meaty bait is what I have found that has unfortunately ended up in their slimy gobs! Well good luck with that ale and be nice to see you actually catch it just to see how big it is. My biggest ale was just over 4 lb. Had to weigh it as it was quite a chunky fish. That was quite a few years ago when there were lots of eels about. Back in the 80s, believe it or not! Anyway, look forward to your next video and all the best my friend 👍👍👍👍🎣🎣🎣🎣🎣😄😄😄😄😄

We used to pick up big silver eels fairly regularly in the 80's in the Lancaster Canal. Was about all we flippin caught tbh 😂 that canal was....pretty bad in the 80's. Or we used to go to the wrong spots. Since then all I've seen is small green eels. And where there's one of those there's 1000's. Like one a cast - and the small ones are a proper pain to unhook. Not something you want to catch really.

Nice grayling but I think I know why you didn't get that eel. You need dead fish on the hook or a fat nightcrawler. If they are like the wons over here they love dead fish and worms. Or even some chicken liver. Bottom rig and just leave it till they find it. Beautiful river there good job on that cold day. Can't catch them from home. Good luck and look forward to the next video.

Worms are good, but they find a smelly deadbait, eventually, if you're lucky. I had a decent one on a rudd deadbait in a friend's trout lake, just short of 6lb. My friend fishing with me, caught a rudd on his deadbait, a bit over a pound. That was a surprise.
@17losttrout
@17losttrout 8 месяцев назад
I'd add that they tend to swallow the hook, so barbless might be a good call. Next time I deadbait, though, I'm going to work out some form of hair rig, so it doesn't go too deep. They take the bait fairly slow, so the bite sometimes registers after the bait is swallowed.

Some prime streams up there. Here in New Mexico we have coveted Rio Grande cuts and Gila (Hila) cuts. Not very big up to 14-17 inches. Of course plenty of rainbows, browns and brookies. First class river in New Mexico is the San Juan and the Brasos - Utah has the green river below flaming gorge, blacks smith fork and several others - Colorado - Conejos, crested butte area and several more. Idaho but haven’t been in many years - Maddison river below quake lake, yellow stone river, head waters of the Missouri River but favorite there are the Henry River and the Teton river. WAY back, not very long after the Anguilla Club formed, a friend was obsessed with large eels and he used small dead baits. He got permission to fish a remote farm pond/moat where he was caught without permission so many times that they gave up throwing him off. I am unsure of the largest that he landed, it was a long time ago. Forward 10-15 years and I was fishing for carp using chopped swan mussel, something that I'd never do/use today. That eel made a friend that was a member of the Anguilla Club, that I worked with, jaw drop. 4lb 13oz - it was around 40 inches long and getting towards 3 inches thick - the landing net has 41 inch arms. Loads upon loads online about fishing for specimen eels. As kids we fished for bootlaces using large hooks and worms, in the (Essex) Colne estuary - the Hythe, if it was closed season. We caught stacks, and ate quite a few.

That’s really cool to hear, I bet there are still some huge specimen eels in the UK, probably living in some very unusual places. Thanks for watching and for taking the time to comment!

@@tonycamplin8607 there is nothing new under the sun in angling - I started in the mid 1960's and cockle was an unusual but well-known bait then. I am sure that it makes no difference at all, but everyone used to soak them in a small amount of milk, usually suggesting that it removed the salt, which makes no sense. Somewhere, I have the specimen trophy for the eel, from CAPS (Colchester club) - I must check as I may be a pound out on the weight - thinking about it more, I think it was 5lb 13oz. It was large, for sure, and caught around the middle of the day (lots of eel fanatics reckon evening and early morning are by far the best times). There were always stories of giant eels, some more believable than others. The most believable were perhaps those about Abberton Reservoir. Before the troubles in NI, you could get day tickets to fish at various points around the whole reservoir, especially the pumping stations - some of the culverts supposedly held giant eels that you could often see. (As built, Abberton Reservoir was not at all angler-friendly as the entire perimeter below the Layer-de-la-Haye causeway was faced with concrete blocks at far too steep an angle to be safe to walk on.

@birdie1585 As you say nothings new. I'm obviously quite a bit older than you! Our farm was on the Pevensey levels and back then, in the early 1950s eels up to 1lb ware a real nuisance and they existed in plague numbers. However back then we caught them for food, mainly in traps so it didn't really matter. How times have changed especially in the last 20 or so years. I now live in the Cambridgeshire fens a very similar area. Thanks for your interesting reply.
@birdie1585
@birdie1585 8 месяцев назад
@@tonycamplin8607 I think that bootlaces were everywhere until at least the 1980's. Certainly back then where I was, they were not allowed at match weigh-ins. I ate a few but our club had a Londoner who would collect any of any size, that anyone caught - a very rotund gentleman called Cyril Johnson. He must have eaten a huge number over the years. If you don't know it, have a search for the film, posted on RU-vid, of one of the last Fenmen, around 1955-60, who made a living from working the water-meadows, marshes, rivers and drains, including eel-trapping. He lived in a cottage not far from what is now the WWT Welney centre. Another one here shows Tom Williams, catching eels on his beat on one of the southern trout streams. He wrote frequently for Angling Times back in the day.

I think it is impossible to catch an eel in winter. They disappear completely in winter. They burrow into the mud or move away. Eel is a summer fish. In any case, I have never caught an eel in winter. Never heard of anyone catching eels in winter either. A beautiful grayling indeed. A species that is very rare in the Netherlands. It is rare to catch eels in winter, but they do occasionally feed. In Kevin Maddocks' book 'Carp and Catfish' (mid 1980s) he has a chapter about winter fishing for carp at the famous Redmire Pool. He kept getting dropped runs on boilies after dark and began to suspect eels (as the pool only contained carp, gudgeon and eels). He eventually landed a big eel.

Eels dont usually feed in those cold conditions. For catching numbers of eels use worms but the really big ones are caught on dead bate, not necessarily fish. However if you do get one be careful they can give you a nasty bite, I know that from bitter experience. It has been an offence since 2009 to fish for eels in Scotland, so bear that in mind if you cross the border. You may catch them accidentally while fishing for other species, which isn’t a problem. Keep the videos coming.

My last (unexpected) eel was on a jumbo prawn whilst fishing for perch. Check out the Angling Direct video on big eels as it shows the rig to use to avoid deep hooking as theyre a nightmare! 👍🏻

Nice Grayling. River Hull traditionally held a lot of eels. I’m not sure how it is nowadays.

Lovely fish, it looked real cold. One day you should come out to New Zealand, where there are longfin eels, which can be quite a challenge when they get hungry and over 20kg in places especially in South Island. There are some feeding videos on RU-vid and JeremyvWade has has fun with the longfins too. Plenty of trout and salmon fishing too.

The NZ trout are serious fish, and those eels are something else. Out in the sea, though, the Kingies gave me a serious reality check!

What are you thinking off. Eels don't feed in these temperatures. Everyone knows that. As for endangered I don't think so. They were a pain in the proverbial on the Ribble this last summer.

Its private land not a private river, you could navigate it in a dinghy and fish, the water is constantly moving so it cant be "owned" or private,
